State Dept: Clinton may be up for testifying on Benghazi, in the future
posted at 5:01 pm on December 17, 2012 by Erika Johnsen
The furor seems to have died down somewhat as the day of the fiscal-cliff deadline draws closer, and since UN Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from the running for Hillary Clinton’s successor as secretary of State; but there are still questions about Benghazi that need answering for which Secretary Clinton and Barack Obama are liable. The deadly terrorist attacks on the consulate in Benghazi are still under Congressional investigation, but we’ve yet to hear any testimony from the head of the State Department.
The State Department has been rather waffly on whether or not Secretary Clinton will indeed testify on the attacks, although she was reportedly meant to testify at meetings this week — but the State Department is now saying that an illness and a fall she sustained last week mean she won’t be able to make it for the time being. Via The Hill:
Clinton was expected to testify at a hearing this Thursday but will be sending her two deputies, William Burns and Thomas Nides, after contracting a stomach virus and suffering a concussion during a fall last weekend. Thursday’s hearing will be preceded by a closed-door briefing of both committees on Wednesday.
“It was her intention to be there. If she had not been ill, she would be there. And she’s also committed, including in a letter today to the committee chairmen, that she looks forward to having an ongoing conversation with them herself,” Nuland said at her daily briefing Monday. “She has, including in a letter today to the two committees, made clear that she looks forward to continuing to engage them in January, and she will be open to whatever they consider appropriate in that regard.”
Might I ask why is this process dragging on so long? There is much too much dithering going on in the Obama administration for comfort, and the American people deserve answers — especially in light of the fact that al Qaeda is not as “decimated” as the picture Obama’s foreign policy team has been painting for us might suggest.
For most of its existence, AQIM had been confined to kidnapping Westerners traveling in the remote deserts of Algeria, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger and other criminal enterprises. Sources in the U.K. say it raised 50 million euros this way. This spring, after a military coup in Mali, AQIM found a partner in Ansar al Dine; together, they swept out government forces from the north of Mali, and now they control a vast Saharan stronghold the size of Texas. AQIM is also at work in Libya, especially around Benghazi. Spanish and French leaders are now labeling the new AQIM strongholds in Mali and Libya the gravest threats to regional stability in more than a decade.
Update: The Advisory Review Board report, investigating the security shortfalls in Benghazi before and during the 9/11/12 attack, on which we’ve all been waiting is now complete, by the way — the unclassified portions will be released this week, and Clinton’s deputies will be testifying on its contents. But, if the House and Senate panels still feel the need to talk with Clinton to get to the bottom of the situation, the State Department is claiming that they will “be open” to continuing to engage in ongoing conversation… whatever that means, exactly?
An independent review of the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya is complete, the State Department announced Monday.
The Independent Advisory Review Board completed its report and presented it to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this morning, department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. …
According to the State Department, the report will be released to leaders on Capitol Hill this week. Review board chairs Thomas Pickering and Adm. Mike Mullen will brief House and Senate leaders about the report in a closed-door Wednesday meeting.

“The Federal Security Service in Russia has revealed the identity of the CIA’s station chief in Moscow in a breach of protocol.
The revelation, made by an FSB spokesman who accused the US agency of crossing a “red line” in its attempt to recruit turncoats among Russian spy agencies, will up the ante in the unfolding spy scandal that emerged earlier this week when Russia detained and expelled an alleged CIA agent working undercover as third secretary at the US embassy in Moscow.
Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy advisor, have taken pains to say they believe the scandal will blow over quickly.
Publicly revealing the CIA station chief proves that some inside the Russian government believe otherwise and is likely to prompt an angry response from Washington….
In that statement, the spokesman included the station chief’s name.
The US embassy declined to comment…”

Unexpectedly…
“Obama adminstration talking points scrubbed jihadists from Cairo as well as Benghazi
In the days after the Benhazi attack, the State Department scurried to cover up its failure to heed warnings of such attacks while the White House scurried to cover up the fact that that attacks were the work of al Qaeda-linked terrorists of the sort President Obama supposedly had largely vanquished. The final Benghazi “talking points” and Susan Rice’s talk show appearances represent the product of this scurrying.
To help advance the narrative that the Benghazi attacks were spontaneous, and thus (a) not to have been anticipated and (b) not linked to al Qaeda, the talking points tied Benghazi to the events of the same day in Cairo. There, unlike in Benghazi, a protest had occurred.
Here is what the final version of the talking points said on this subject:
The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the U.S. diplomatic post and subsequently its annex. There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations.
Through these two sentences, the administration succeeded in misleading Congress about events in both Benghazi and Cairo.
The statement about Benghazi is simply false. There was no spontaneously inspired protest; rather, there was a pre-planned attack.
In Cairo, as noted, there were protests. But, as Tom Joscelyn argues, the protests were pre-planned, with jihadists playing a prominent role.
Multiple early versions of the CIA-drafted talking points make this clear. For example, the CIA stated:
On 10 September, the Agency notified Embassy Cairo of social media reports calling for a demonstration and encouraging jihadists to break into the Embassy.
The “social media reports” in question included a September 10 tweet from Mohammed al Zawahiri, the younger brother of al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri. He called on “the sons of the Jihadi Movement to participate tomorrow in the demonstration in front of the American Embassy.” And he included a banner displaying an al Qaeda-style black flag in his tweet.
That banner featured prominently during the 9/11 demonstration in Cairo. Says Joscelyn, protesters waved dozens of them as they chanted “Obama, Obama, we are all Osama.” The message was clear: jihad in general, and al Qaeda in particular, live on without Osama bin Laden.
This was precisely the message the Obama administration wished to suppress. And, for its part, the State Department wanted to suppress the fact that, not only were there warnings about danger to facilities in Libya, but also warnings about planned jihadist activity at the embassy in Cairo on 9/11/12.
Accordingly, the talking points were edited to remove any reference to “jihadists” threatening the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.
As Joscelyn concludes:
The early versions of the Benghazi talking points were right to highlight the threat posed by “jihadists” in Cairo. The thread connecting Cairo to Benghazi is plain to see: Al Qaeda-linked jihadists helped orchestrate both.
The Obama administration’s edits removed them from the story…”

Uhoh…
“Contrary to the official version of events told by the IRS, the targeting of conservative groups did not begin in 2010, but started at least as early as 2009.
The Coalition For Life, a pro-life group from Cedar Rapids, Iowa was questioned by an IRS agent in Cincinnati named “Ms. Richards” as early as April, 2009. The Coalition stated to the IRS that it was “organized for charitable, religious and educational activities.”
Some of the questions asked about the prayer meetings the group held and what was written on signs that the group held when protesting Planned Parenthood. More than 150 pages of correspondence between the organization and the IRS occurred in 2009, even though the group’s assertion that it was “organized for charitable, religious and educational activities” qualified it as a tax-exempt entity under 501(c)(3) status.
Friday’s testimony in Washington by IRS officials stated that the targeting of conservative groups only began in 2010 after a plethora of Tea Party and Liberty groups applied for 501(c)(4) status.
Despite the fact that 501(c)(3) organizations are permitted to have religious activities and advocate on non-partisan issues, some of the queries sent to Coalition For Life included:
Please explain how all of your activities, including prayer meetings, held outside Planned Parenthood are considered educational as defined under 501(c)(3)?
Organizations exempt under 501(c)(3) may present opinions with scientific or medical facts. Explain in detail the activities at these prayer meetings.
Please provide the percentage of time your group spends on prayer groups as compared with other activities of the organization.
Please explain in detail the signs that are being held up outside Planned Parenthood, and explain how they are considered educational.
The Coalition For Life’s attorney answered the IRS in 2009:
These inquiries indicate some very wrong assumptions about the coalitions and the applicable law. As a result, the coalition has been prejudiced and has suffered harm since it is unable to solicit and receive tax deductible charitable contributions…”

Posted this at Althouse, but considered the media spin about how it doesn’t affect regular Americans so we don’t care,… it seems better placed here.
Mrs. Althouse..
I’m not an attorney, never been to college, just a one time Airman, retired grocer on a disability. I just want to share this..
at a family gathering yesterday, small, democrats and republicans, all low end working class.. the sense of the discussion was depressed.. all of us, all in and around the same ages.. all were stunned to our socks by the IRS admission of targeting individuals for their political beliefs.
A sinking feeling to the pit of my stomach best describes it. having been in the last years of the cold war.. standing a post against the Soviets, I have to wonder, is this even my country anymore?
Where political persecution is not only happening, but condoned by some?
The subject became very personal.. I’ve had a running fight with workers comp.. and now, medicare,.. how can I deal with this, and not wonder in the back of my mind, is there a big red R stamped on my files?
and the same thing occurred to everyone else there, even the democrats were sick about it, we’re family, politics or not.. and they wondered.. how would I feel were it me the government didn’t like? I’m not saying that I’m being targeted..
Just that.. now..
how will that fear, doubt ever go away?
Whatever limited trust there was is gone.. murdered by Miller’s lame excuses.. by the happy smirks of online progressives all so happy about it. HOW will we ever trust that we won’t be targeted by some IRS.. Obamacare flunky who compares voter registration with your medical files?
with your activities, group affiliations? We can never trust it won’t happen because it just did..
I’m very dependent on medical care right now, very much in pain, and workers comp is refusing surgery because one doctor said no.. then refusing twice more a second opinion.. how can I ever be sure it’s not because I’m a registered commenter at Hotair?.. or a veteran?.. a Christian with strong pro-life views, and not kept secret about it online..
Maybe pain, government indifference and an unrelated scandal create suspicion too easily.. but it’s there, and real.
This scandal has legs..
Because it isn’t just me, but nearly everyone like me who’s dependent on government services now wondering if the services aren’t a weapon beat us into silence. My Michigan cousin, she says the same,.. democrat aunt.. her too.. they need not go after all of us, just create the fear,.. you say what we do not like..
you’ll suffer for it… and with a medical condition, it is suffer..
The unanimity of opinion is striking.. that’s why this scandal will do what the MSM has feared most, turn the whole of public opinion against Obama..
I fear no man.. but a fractured spine without medication isn’t a man, and that they’ve done to me already once..
we have to win this, purge this unAmerican rot now, before we become used to being afraid..
————-
Watergate was something that happened when I was 12,..
this, affects my freedom to speak my mind, as it does all of our abilities to speak freely..
these media hacks should resign in disgrace.

Thank you, ma’am!
I posted that today because a lot of folks do not know the Manchurian President’s background, thanks to the MSM’s lack of vetting.

I recall HW Bush polling at near 90% in 91,.. I noticed the media never asked Democrats to sit down and shut up..

SanFranNan can spin these “jobs should be the issue, not these scandals” talking points of hers from now until she crashes while on her side job as a test pilot at a broom factory, and it is not going to mean diddly! Because right now, people are angry, and they want answers and they want them yesterday!

“You are a slow learner, Winston.”
“How can I help it? How can I help but see what is in front of my eyes? Two and two are four.”
“Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane.” – Orwell 1984
The spin at Christian Science Monitor (with a pic of Michelle Bachmann included)
Headline : Now playing in a political theater near you: The IRS scandal meets Obamacare.

So ya see folks…This
KGBIRS concern trolling is really part of a craaaazy republican plot to takedown Obamacare…workingclass artist on May 19, 2013 at 9:48 AM

“What can you do, thought Winston, against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?” – Orwell, 1984

I’d seen this before.. but it really puts his nasty sleasy 2012 campaign in focus, his ginning up occupy, his SEIU bussed to CEO’s lawns events in 09.. he is a walking talking hate machine, it’s all he’s got. and why what he considers compromise is bend over and take it.
any wonder why MSNBC uses Sharpton now?.. why so many callers in to AM radio are hate rage filled inner city uninformed democrats convinced we only oppose Obama because he’s black?
It’s the left’s mother’s milk.. HATE the oppressor.. except the “oppressor” seems to always be the other party which oppresses them from being elected by running a rival campaign.

Someone has to represent what majority of Americans truly care about you know. Last I heard, Benghazi trials do not feed the kids.

mark81150 on May 19, 2013 at 9:58 AM
Most Americans aren’t stupid. They know a racist when they see one. You can play victimhood all you want but the apple has definitely not fallen far from the tree.. Your actions support their theory.
HotAirLib on May 19, 2013 at 9:59 AM
I wish it were so. But methinks the GOPe will hyperventilate and then capitulate.
