Quotes of the day

The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., bloodiest attack of its kind in the nation’s history, stands as a possible tipping point after Washington’s decade-long aversion even to talking about stricter gun laws…

It remains to be seen whether Sandy Hook will break the usual cycle of universal shock fading into political reality. That reality is based on a combination of powerful gun lobbying and public opinion, which has shifted against tougher gun control and stayed that way. However lawmakers react this time, it’s the president’s call whether the issue fades again or takes its place alongside the legacy-shaping initiatives of his time, with all the peril that could mean for his party…

One certainty in the weeks to come is that both parties in Washington will carefully watch public opinion on gun control and the Second Amendment, and whether any impact lasts. Opposition to stricter laws has proved resilient.

***

[A]dvocates of gun control say the shootings at an elementary school in Newtown might be different for two reasons: the victims were children, eliciting a gut-wrenching response across the country, and the National Rifle Association proved to be a political paper tiger in the 2012 election.

“The political atmosphere has clearly changed because now we have solid evidence that the N.R.A. just was not effective in the last election cycle,” said Kristen Rand, legislative director for the Violence Policy Center, a gun-control advocacy group. “This just has a feel that they won’t get away with doing nothing this time.”

***

Pivotal players in any legislative action would be the half dozen Democratic senators up for re-election in 2014 who represent states that tend to be more protective of gun owners’ rights: Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota, and Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska…

Two other Democrats also crucial to any Senate action would be Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and senator-elect Joe Donnelly of Indiana…

Whether Obama decides that he wants to lead an effort to persuade Congress to enact new measures to limit access to guns may in part depend on how the public responds in the next week.

***

Adam Lanza, the troubled nerd who turned a Connecticut school into a slaughterhouse, learned how to shoot under the watchful eye of his demanding mom Nancy.

“She said she would often go target shooting with her kids,” landscaper Dan Holmes said.

Nancy Lanza wound up being the first of her son’s 27 victims when he used one of her guns to shoot her dead.

Holmes, who often mowed the grass at the Lanza’s sprawling Newtown home, told Reuters the doomed mom was proud of her arsenal and once showed him a “high end rifle” she had just purchased.

U.S. school districts have spent millions of dollars on metal detectors, security cameras and elaborate emergency-response plans since the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, but almost nothing could have prevented Friday’s massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, security experts say…

Still, Bond said, there is no way for students and teachers to protect themselves when someone begins shooting with a weapon. He said even a security guard and locked doors could not have stopped the killer.

Without knowing the school’s security system, Kenneth Trump, president of consulting firm National School Safety and Security Services, stresses that schools need to be “looking for these lone wolf actors.”

“As a father, I would love to have a 100 percent guarantee that nothing bad will ever happen in my kids’ school, but as a rational school safety professional I know nobody can give me a 100 percent guarantee on safety,” said Trump.

3) We must find a way to make it more difficult for the non-adjudicated mentally ill to come into possession of weapons. This is crucially important, but very difficult, because it would require the cooperation of the medical community — of psychiatrists, therapists, school counselors and the like — and the privacy issues (among other issues) are enormous. But: It has to be made more difficult for sociopaths, psychopaths and the otherwise violently mentally-ill (who, in total, make up a small portion of the mentally ill population) to buy weapons.

4) People should have the ability to defend themselves. Mass shootings take many lives in part because no one is firing back at the shooters. The shooters in recent massacres have had many minutes to complete their evil work, while their victims cower under desks or in closets. One response to the tragic reality that we are a gun-saturated country is to understand that law-abiding, well-trained, non-criminal, wholly sane citizens who are screened by the government have a role to play in their own self-defense, and in the defense of others (read The Atlantic article to see how one armed school administrator stopped a mass shooting in Pearl Mississippi). I don’t know anything more than anyone else about the shooting in Connecticut at the moment, but it seems fairly obvious that there was no one at or near the school who could have tried to fight back.

***

Imagine that you ran a school district, and some rich foundation, worried about school shootings, gave you the following offer: We’ll hire armed security guards for you, who could try to do something about the school shooter. These aren’t going to be highly trained police officers, just typical security guards, given some modest training and subjected to basic background checks. It’s not like they’re highly skilled; security guards rarely are. But they have a basic understanding of how to shoot, and when to shoot…

But wait! The foundation has just learned that its investment portfolio has done very badly, and the grant doesn’t go through. But someone else suggests: Instead of hiring special-purpose security guards, why not take some of your existing employees — teachers, administrators, and the like — and offer them a deal: They’d go through some modest training and subjected to basic background checks, and in exchange they’d be given the right to carry the same guns that the security guards would have had…

Is there some reason why the armed security guard is safe and helpful, but the armed teacher, administrator, or staffer — er, the teacher with a volunteer security guard license — would be useless and a menace?

***

The general decline in gun-related violence and the inability even of mental health professionals to identify future mass killers should be the essential starting points of any serious policy discussion generated by the absolutely horrific slaughter at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. We should also add a third starting point: Few good policies come from rapid responses to deeply felt injuries. Many of the same people who are now calling for immediate action with regard to gun control recognize that The Patriot Act, rushed through Congress in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, was a terrible piece of legislation that ultimately did nothing to protect Americans even as it vastly expanded the state’s ability to surveil law-abiding citizens. There’s no reason to think that federal, state, or local gun control laws promulgated now would result in anything different.

If hard cases make bad laws, it’s even more true that rare crimes make terrible public policy. In a piece for Quartz, journalist Lenore Skenazy recalls that the deadliest school massacre in U.S. history took place in Michigan in 1927, when a disgruntled school-board official blew up 38 people, including himself. She writes that the real difference between now and then is the immediacy of the media, which shrinks the distance between victims and the rest of us. Even as that allows us to have more empathy for the grieving, it creates the conditions for an overreaction that will ultimately be little more than symbolic

Hugo Chavez wants your guns. He needs to melt them down to make an iron fist so he can make sure no one hurts you.

Like tens of millions of other parents, if you offered me a deal to go back in time with a gun to stop this POS and told me, in advance, it MIGHT only save one child’s life …

… but would absolutely result in my death – I would take it without a second thought.

Yesterday, when I got off work, I went home for a while and caught up on the latest regarding Newtown. I laid down for a while after that, no tv or anything else.

I got up after about an hour and decided to go do the weekly grocery shopping. Anything to keep from seeing/hearing more about this tragedy. I went to County Market first and then to Wal Mart.

As I walked through each store, every time I saw a child, be it four, five, six, years old I looked at them and thought to myself, “How could you do that? How could you look into those innocent little eyes and pull the trigger? How the f##k could you do that?”

Guns are not the problem here. Evil is the problem. And our society/culture promotes that evil daily. We are at an impasse. We either save ourselves and our children (our future) from this mindset or we are doomed as a society.

Clackamas man, armed, confronts mall shooter
http://www.nwcn.com/news/oregon/183609901.html

“I heard three shots and turned and looked at Casey and said, ‘are you serious?’”

The friend and baby hit the floor. Meli, who has a concealed carry permit, positioned himself behind a pillar.

The break in gunfire allowed Meli to pull out his own gun, but he never took his eyes off the shooter.

“As I was going down to pull I saw someone in the back of the charlotte move and I knew if I fired and missed I could hit them.”

Meli took cover inside a nearby store. He never pulled the trigger. He stands by that decision.

“I’m not beating myself up cause I didn’t shoot him,” said Meli. “I know after he saw me I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself.”

Could it be that a gun in the hands of an individual halted that attack in the mall?

Could it also be that since it didn’t fit the BSM gun grabbing narrative, no one is talking about it?

Those poor angels who lost their lives because a disturbed young man was out of control is the sorriest story of this Christmas season. These youngsters were probably excited about the soon-to-visit arrival of Santa Claus and for those brought up in the Christian faith the commemoration of the birth of the Christ Child. They are indeed the Holy Innocents of the season.

Prayers for the suffering of their families and friends.

btw, that buzz BS about Obama ‘repealing’ – it’s a load of crap. It’s about the opening up of National Parks to lawful CCW holders, a regulation change enacted by congress and signed into law by President GW Bush, which was scheduled to take effect AFTER Obama’s first annointing. Obama’s second order of business that day – after signing an EO insisting Gitmo be closed (lol, how’s THAT working out?) – was to halt the CCW regulation change ‘for study’. They looked and looked and couldn’t find a way to BLOCK it, so had to let it go forward. That what that LYING CLOWN at Buzzfeed is calling a ‘repeal’ by Obama.
And he totally ignores another key piece of pro gun legislation which Bush signed into law, the Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which obstensibly protects firearm manufacturers, distributors and dealers from legal harassments for lawfully conducted business. A block to Brady et al for their incessant lawfare, trying to bankrupt such businesses with legal judgements despite their doing no legal wrong. Brady is pushing a couple such suits again lately. Change of true believers or some big money donation, something has them pushing that bit of lawfare again after slacking off it for a decade. Maybe Obama’s failure to tilt the whole works with Fast & Furious.

Has nothing to do with your first amendment rights. If you are so hard over about how badly the US is doing things, there are lots of countries in the world that would be more to your liking. Anywhere from the currently soft socialism in the mainland European countries, to a nearly fully developed welfare state in the formerly Great Britain, to some more aggressive forms of statism in places like Venezuela, to even more utopian marxist states like Cuba. I’m sure any of them would be glad to have a contributor to their society like yourself. Why do you want to take away the liberty and freedom of everyone in the US and change it to be like one of those other places that you could have right now? Seems kind of selfish.

The Preezy and all the rest of his pogues are going to try their damnedest to get all teh anti-gun mileage they can out of this, all the mileage they thought they could muster with the Fast & Furious incited border war and their massively coordinated phony narrative of ’90 percent of Mexico’s recovered crime guns come from the U.S.’

rayra on December 15, 2012 at 10:18 PM

Yep. As I posted last night, the speeches and battle plan have been in place for years, probably since Obama’s immaculation. They just needed to fill in the place and names. They tried it after the Aurora shooting, but didn’t get any traction and didn’t push too hard because of the upcoming election. Now they are going to erase the names of the Aurora victims, and change the place name to Connecticut and have another concerted go at it. They probably realize though that even with the yellow journalism of the MSM, this can have a devastating effect on the dems in 2014.

Many if not most people in America today are, in the wake of events on Connecticut, failing to understand the significance of that tragic event. Some see only the evil perpetrated by the young gunman, others, the liberals amongst us and a great percentage of the political class seem to be focusing their attention exclusively on the guns that he used and missing the point that the guns didn’t kill anyone out of their own volition. The truth however is that the political class and the liberals are not missing the point, they are intentionally acting to obfuscate the point. What they do not want you or anyone else to focus on is the responsibility that the individual bare in their actions.

I put tritium night sights on my concealed carry last year and discovered an added “bonus”.

At 7 – 15 yards, the rear sights neatly enclose the head on a silouhette target.

Just bracket the head with the rear sights, focus the front sight for elevation and pull.

Body armor rendered superfluous.

Before anyone wants to jump in with “center mass”, yes, that is what I have taught for over 20 years but think about other advantages, if you have the training, to taking a head shot first before putting a double tap at center mass …

The only thing the Brady Center needs given to it is bullets through its windows, one of the most anti-American organizations in existence. You do realize that, as a result of its efforts, CT has the most stringent anti-gun laws on the books, and quite likely why no one in that school had a gun available to stop the carnage. Law abiding citizens they were, and 20 dead children to their credit, all thanks to the Brady bunch.

What happened is very sad and I am furious such a thing could happen but gun control will do nothing to stop the violence. One thing I noticed is that news orgs are quick to state it was a Glock, Sig, and Bushmaster used. When a drunk driver kills someone nobody mentions they had Cuervo, Coors, or Jaeger and there are a lot of people killed by drunk drivers. It is the individual that is responsible, not the manufacturer. The left just does not believe in personal responsibility what-so-ever and is always looking for a scapegoat.

Got this from the MADD website:
In 2010, 211 children were killed in drunk driving crashes. Out of those 211 deaths, 131 (62 percent) were riding with the drunk driver. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “Traffic Safety Facts 2010: Alcohol Impaired Driving” Washington DC: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2011.)

200+ laws where broken and a dozen more will not stop anything. Every shot fired broke a law even when it missed and hit the wall. When they say ban guns toss back that drug bans have does so much to stop drug use. More people will die due to drunk driving this weekend and the current laws to stop drunk driving have not stopped it.

Just one more law will make them stop and no one will die, cira 1938.

btw, the ‘children killed by guns’ stats the Left usually trots out are compltely bogus. Brady et al count 19yr-old gangbangers killed in shootouts with police in that stat.
And the infant / toddler numbers are bunk as well. More of them down in toilets and buckets, than are killed by gunfire. The FBI & CDC stats plainly show it, to anyone with the intellectual honesty to look.
Just like the NICS and manufacturer stats show that several million AR-15 pattern rifles are now (legally!) in civilian and they will not be surrendered to some post-facto law change. Just like they weren’t surrendered / registered after the 1989 CA AWB. CA govt’s dirty little secret, massive civil disobedience.

Isn’t it interesting that some progressives would rather come to blogs like Hot Air to rant against guns and insist that there should be more gun control laws rather than using their time more effectively in lobbying their congress members to actually change the laws?

Surely, even a progressive’s reasoning capability stretches far enough to understand that no one here is likely to be swayed by their arguments, and even if anyone on this forum were swayed to their point of view, it certainly wouldn’t make a difference in terms of passing legislation through congress.

It leads me to wonder what it could be that motivates them, other than a desperate need for attention and the desire to try to inflict their own very obvious personal misery on others.
