A second mass shooting avoided on Friday

posted at 7:01 pm on December 15, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

It looks like there might be one bit of good news from yesterday, if such is even possible. Police in Oklahoma are indicating that there was a second mass shooting in a school planned there for the same day, but sharp police work thwarted it before it got off the ground.

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – A Bartlesville High School student is in custody on charges he plotted to bomb and shoot students at the campus auditorium on the same day that 28 people were shot and killed at an elementary school in Connecticut.

Police arrested 18-year-old Sammie Eaglebear Chavez at about 4:30 a.m. Friday after learning of the alleged plot Thursday.

An arrest affidavit says Chavez tried to convince other students to help him lure students into the auditorium, chain the doors shut and start shooting. The Tulsa World reports that authorities say Chavez threatened to kill students who didn’t help.

Chavez is currently being held on $1M bail.

This is a reminder of something else which I believe is important to keep in mind. Something unimaginably awful happened yesterday in Connecticut. But something every bit as awful didn’t happen in Oklahoma at the same time. And it didn’t happen because people spoke up and police did their jobs. That one statement contains two different elements, both of which are worth remembering as the media rushes to push for more gun control laws.

First of all, for any given incident where some madman runs amok with a gun, there is an entire nation of well over 300 million people – each with their own share of potential madmen – where nothing goes wrong. I could expand on that point for hundreds of words, but it seems obvious enough for any rational thinker to grasp.

Second, and perhaps more to the point, there are differences between the two states in question. Connecticut, as I pointed out earlier today, has some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation. Oklahoma has traditionally been fairly protective of 2nd amendment rights and just last month passed a new open carry law. Both of them were clearly under the threat of horrific assault by a madman. So it’s difficult to pose the argument that the deranged are more or less likely to be found in one state or another based solely on their gun laws.

The last point this brings up, though, has to do with community. If there is any remedy to be found to these events, it’s not through legislation or restricting the tools (read: guns in these cases) used by madmen. It’s the rebuilding of a sense of community and responsibility to each other.. a shared sense of decency being passed down to each generation. When that collapses, the entire system is weakened. The government is, in reality, very limited in their ability to protect us if responsible citizens are not engaged in the duty to protect and defend ourselves. And that includes speaking up when we learn that somebody is even considering doing something like this. That worked in Oklahoma by all accounts. It somehow failed to work in Connecticut. This is a time for all of us to pull together and hopefully remember that we are stronger and safer when we stand up together and look out for one another.

Excellent post Jazz. What is really getting my goat is the fact that for how many years now, we have basically desensitized our kids with all of these stupid shoot em up/kill em dang games. These kids are supposed to be our future….NOT! There is no excuse. I had a short conversation with my 27 yo son about this last night. He made the statement that it’s not the games, they’re fun…I made the statement back that yes, it’s not the games, it’s the freaks that are allowed to sit there and become so engrossed in these “games” that they can’t differentiate between reality and fantasy. He had to agree on that one. He doesn’t play these games because I would not allow them in my house when he was younger. I can say that at least he and my daughter are somewhat sane for their ages…27 and 30. I can only Pray that we, as a nation, return to our Christian/Jewish roots and bring G-d back into the classroom, et al. Rant over.

albill on December 15, 2012 at 7:10 PM

Like the canids we love so much, we need to be properly socialized. Where Hillary erred was in giving the village primacy above the parent, and, the individual. That type of social structure subverts the sine non qua of human character, courage. That is the problem with the “nanny state”; where there is no personal responsibility, no ability to fail utterly, there is no sense of ob.ligation to the village because the village has already deemed you less than a leader.

And, he DID NOT have a bullet proof vest. Just a cloth load-bearing vest – which offers NO protection against bullets.

A native American shot up a school at Red Lake, MN a few years ago. I wouldn’t bring it up cept that I caught the libs on NPR dabbling in racial profiling today, about how the kids are almost always white. They are suddenly all about racial stereotyping criminal activity. Since whites are the majority, I wonder what percent of incidents over the actual population percent it would have to be before you could call it a predominantly white crime. Or it could be that whites are so comparatively law abiding on the other violent crimes that when whites are committing one particular crime even equal to their percent of the population, there is an urge to claim that it is a white crime.

Thank heaven for a happy ending…Chavez made it clear to others he wanted to do something insane and it was taken seriously enough to be reported. But many times these people give off no clue of what they are planning to do. The friends/acquaintainces of the OR mall shooter were all completely shocked and spoke well of the man. I wouldn’t say all white (just like it’s wrong to say ‘all serial killers are white males,’ since there have been female serial killers and black serial killers), but most of the spree killers are white males in their late teens/early 20s. The ones who aren’t white still tend to be males in that same age-range who have mental health issues and are typically of above-average intelligence, though not always.

So the profile to look out for is a male in his late teens/early 20s who is most likely a loner and has easily spotted mental health issues.

The media is lying. They just make sh*t up like in Aurora. Holmes didn’t have body armor. He was wearing a tactical vest. Not kevlar. The media routinely says these guns are automatic. Leaving the image of a machine gun in many people’s minds. They do this intentionally to scare gun noobs. My mom today kept saying how scary it was that the nut from yesterday had a military assault weapon (never mind that it wasn’t even used). She knows nothing about guns. I pulled out my AR and explained to her the difference between an military M4 which is capable of firing in full auto or 3 round bursts where as a civilian AR functions no different than a 1911 pistol. After a bit of education she wasn’t afraid anymore and was sickened by the medias attempts to frighten the public with their deceit.

Even if the Aurora shooter had been wearing kevlar, one or two rounds to the chest from a 1911 or another .45 would have put him down long enough to save some lives.

It all seems rather convenient…

Lil barry wants ‘tougher’ anti-gun laws…and, all of a sudden, there’s a rash of shootings by “nutcases”.

Sort of like hundreds of deaths in Mexico becoming an excuse for more infringement of the Second Amendment. Deaths caused by the American regime smuggling weapons to the drug cartels – with instructions to drop the guns at the murder scenes.

Very nice post, Jazz. We conservatives know this. We look to each other and society with a sense of responsibility. Liberals, on the other hand, look to government and what’s in it for them and what can they get out of it.

Are we supposed to censor the truth? The truth may sometimes hurt, but at the end of the day it is still the truth.

That may be another issue with liberals – they want soft and pleasant words, never mind if it is dishonest.

Really? The guy had a bullet proof vest and a high power rifle. What chance would a teacher have armed with a handgun against this kind of killer?

Should our schools be like armed camps with teachers fully kitted out and trained like SWAT squads?

lexhamfox on December 15, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Getting tired of this canard.

1./ ‘Body armor’ comes in many shapes and sizes, and none of it makes you ‘bullet proof’.
2./ The overwhelming majority of mass victim shooters are not trained to handle a force-on-force situation. Shooting back is better than the alternative.

This holds true whether you’re facing down someone hopped up on PCP or your typical freak like this guy. It also holds true in the exceedingly unlikely event you are confronted with someone who is trained.
