Will Hillary Clinton testify to House, Senate committees on Benghazi?

posted at 8:41 am on December 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Almost three months have passed since terrorists sacked the oddly-undefended American consulate in Benghazi, and the head of the State Department still hasn’t bothered to appear before Congressional committees investigating the attack.  In fact, the State Department seems oddly confused about whether Hillary Clinton will testify at all, or whether State intends to share its own investigation with their the House or Senate.  After Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced that Clinton would finally share her testimony on the attack with both chambers of Congress, the State Department announced that no one there has agreed to anything, at least not yet:

The House and Senate foreign relations committees have already announced that Secretary of StateHillary Clinton will testify on Benghazi next week, but the State Department said today that’s not a done deal.

Moreover, the State Department may not even share the report of its own internal review on Benghazi with Congress, a top State Department official said today.

Congress expects Clinton to testify Dec. 20 about the results of the Accountability Review Board, State’s internal review on the events leading up to and during the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi that resulted in the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. But the State Department said today that the work of the ARB, led by Tom Pickering and Adm. Mike Mullen, isn’t complete yet and so Clinton might not show up to testify next week at all.

The ARB report isn’t complete and may not be until after the December 20 date scheduled by the House Foreign Affairs Committee for Clinton’s testimony.  Without the ARB report, State claimed, there isn’t anything for Hillary to testify about.  And even if the report is complete, State spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told The Cable, Congress might not get to see anything except Hillary’s written response to it … sometime in the spring:

The Cable asked Nuland if the State Department will share the ARB with Congress at all. Nuland responded that they may not decide to give the actual report to Congress.

“The ARB’s responsibility is to brief the secretary. The secretary has said she will be transparent to Congress,” Nuland said. “What is required, Josh, is that the secretary’s response to the ARB’s conclusions has to go to Congress within 90 days of her receiving the report.”

Lovely.  In other words, the internal investigation that the Obama administration has used to keep Hillary and other State personnel at arms’ length from Congress will likely end up in a file cabinet when it’s complete.  That seems a wee bit odd, no?  After all, State controlled this investigation, naming the ARB members and choosing its access.   If the report absolved State and/or the White House, would it not already be in the hands of Congress as a means of push-back against criticism of Susan Rice, and others?

The news that State may refuse to share the ARB conclusions should give the House committee an opening to start issuing subpoenas to put its own investigation into high gear.  They can start by subpoenaing the ARB and its report, and see whether that resolves the “uncertainty surrounding Hillary Clinton,” as Bret Baier put it last night:

Of course she won’t and it would of course be sexist to call her to testify. Why must Republicans continue their war on women?

Moreover, the State Department may not even share the report of its own internal review on Benghazi with Congress

It will slip out somehow. They are scrambling to get a write-up that was due out months ago in regards to our consulates and embassies. They are trying to get it done to get to congress, but it has to be done in two days. It has been delayed almost two years at this point, and was going to be delayed another year. My wife just found out that they were going to finish it by next week, then sending it to CBO.

She also did the write-up in it for Tripoli and Benghazi.

A lot of good that would do. Obama will just exert executive privilege again. And no, I’m not even half-joking with that prediction. That’s exactly what’ll happen.

The ARB report isn’t complete and may not be until after the December 20 date scheduled by the House Foreign Affairs Committee for Clinton’s testimony. Without the ARB report, State claimed, there isn’t anything for Hillary to testify about.

The report that my wife is working on is part of the ARB to congress. It has to do with the budget, so that is why it is going to CBO first. Her office deals with the maintenance, upkeep and building of US embassies and consulates. The House needs to get ahold of that report, because that will tell them what State had on the books (what they thought the security posture was) for Tripoli, Benghazi, and all other installations overseas. Hillary and the President can’t supress that.

Not surprising coming from an administration that can count on fellow democrats and the press to take a big pass on holding them accountable for their own failures.

…after all….this is the same administration that can sell thousands of assault weapons to Mexican Cartels….weapons used to kill hundreds of people including American law enforcement…..then come away with an “investigation” that absolves all the people in charge because somehow they had no idea what was going on.

It’s scary what an administration can get away with when our press core has it’s lips pressed so firmly to their ass’s……

Obama, Hillary, Bill, Rice, Holder, Jarrett, Axelrod, Emanuel, Dunn, Big Sis…the whole lot of them, these have given “Slippery Eel” a new run for the slipperiest ever.

Hillary, testify? We all know how that’d go if she ever does: she’ll laugh and smile and people like McCain will ‘ooh’ and ‘awww’ and it’ll be an awful thing.

Obama has to be held accountable for the lives lost in Benghazi and for that situation all-told. Hillary, Rice, Axelrod with his commands of the Leftmedia…they’re all doing their portions of the dance involved but it is Obama who must be held accountable.

Deano1952 on December 14, 2012 at 9:02 AM

Why would she? She’s a Clinton. She’s a Democrat. She’s in the Obama regime. She’s above all this stuff. They do what they want. They say what they want. The go where they want. They crush who they want.

As for the rest of us? We’re here to serve them. Our purposes is to make them rich. To give them power. To make them comfortable. To make sure they are well fed with the best of foods. They must be able to wear the best clothes. To live richly. And if that takes giving up our homes, our cars and our property and wealth to accomplish that, we should not complain. We should be thankful and rejoice.

And as for the Republican party? It’s mission is to assist the Democrat party in this goal. I joined the Republican party because I wanted to join a party that helped to promote the Democrat party. I wanted to join a party that had as it’s vision to work with the Democrat party to achieve Democrat goals. That’s why all Republicans vote Republican. To support the Democrat party.

“going to find out who is responsible…”

But she sure has a happy laugh about it, doesn’t she?

Hillary and Bill and Barack Obama are expert liars. So is John Kerry, so is “Ambassador S. Rice,” so are the whole lot of these Leftwingers.

I am not so much blaming the GOP/Right as I am describing the circumstances we are in. Obama and his lot have given “arch wrongdoers” a new low and they’re running amok like they are because there’s nothing and no one to restrain or stop them. I don’t know that anyone can, meaning, it’s not something civilized people ever anticipated would need to be done: a President and Administration who would behave as Obama and his Lot have and are: running amok and laughing about it without regard for restraints (i.e., limits on them by Constitution, job limitations).

I still have “official White House” photos taken at Christmas time in the White House in front of a big Christmas tree there, with Hillary Clinton (then the First Lady) standing there with a big smile with a cocaine smuggler who gave (at least what’s been identified) “$20,000″ to the (Bill) Clinton Presidential election campaign.

Not one peep about that, or about the brazen WH visit he and his companion made to the WH, and that WH “official” Christmas photo taken. Oh, and another one in the same circumstances with then-VP Al Gore.

Big ole’ donor, big ole cocaine smuggler, Jose-something (he’s fully identified in the photo/s I have).

They got away with fomenting violence in the streets against early Tea Party protests. They are getting away with the murder of a US Ambassador and three others. And now they are getting away with fomenting violence in the streets once again by union creeps.

They’re emboldened by their election victories and a complicit press. They’ve already carted off one American citizen in the middle of the night and imprisoned him on trumped up charges. Don’t think for a minute they won’t do this to others.

So who else can they issue subpoenas for? Gen. Ham? the CIA survivors who got out of the compound at Benghazi? Fox News, IIRC, talked to the person who supposedly debriefed those people…can they subpoena him/her? Has anyone ever been able to interview the Turkish Ambassador who got in and out of the compound without problems? What about the report of the British national who supposedly left the compound right before it was attacked (to buy phone cards)…is this true, and has anyone talked to him? In other words…is there any way possible to get around any claim of executive privilege that may be coming?

Lourdes on December 14, 2012 at 9:10 AM

They are tired because they work so hard at avoiding the real fight.
They refuse to do and say what really needs to be said and done and as a result.. lose. So their efforts come to nothing. When the regime calls them murderers and baby killers.. the GOP responds how? They respond by saying “We just want the President to lead. We’re waiting to work with the President. He’s a nice guy. Look at my chart.”

This whole fiscal cliff fiasco. The GOP just keep talking spending and numbers. Yeah, whatever. While Obama and the Democrats accuse them of destroying the nation and killing old people the Democrats are actually doing it.

The economy is a symptom. The unemployment numbers are a symptom. Benghazi is a symptom. The GOP wants to focus on the symptoms and ignore the root causes. The root is the Democrat party is a socialist/fascist party with the goal if totally destroying our liberty and freedom and changing American into a dictatorship or something like it! But the GOP runs from that argument! It embarrasses them!

When was the last time you heard a single Republican leader use the word “liberty?” And yet liberty is what is under assault everywhere. It’s attacked by the EPA. By the TSA. By Homeland. By the war on drugs. By taxation. Confiscation. By this President. But all the GOP talks about is jobs and tax cuts! Nobody cares!

But the truth? Exposing the truth? Yes.. that’s a different story! The truth is the enemy of the lie! The truth is a powerful weapon when used the right way. Reagan knew this. He used the truth with passion and conviction and won in landslide. The Democrats were always responding to him! Reagan won in s landslides before there was a Fox news, or youtube or talk radio!
I still remember the day after the election, when Reagan won in a 48 state landslide.. Tip ONeail, Democrat speaker of the House responded by saying “It’s not a mandate!” How did Boehner respond? ObamaCare is the law of the land and Republicans need to fall in line!”

This is why we lose. It is not because the American people are leaning left. It is not because we have lost the argument.. we haven’t even given the argument. The Republican aren’t even fighting.

When your leader has an easier time publicly engaging in weepy sentimental moments than he does in publicly speaking the words “liberty or tyranny” you know you are screwed.

So, what are we going to do about her refusal to testify? Write of a lot of blog posts? Shake our tiny fists in the air? Complain about the media silence and/or free ride? Threaten to primary somebody or other in the next election?

WSJ ran an editorial the other day on “who speaks for the GOP?” In normal times, it would be a combination of Party Chairman Preibus, Senate Minority Leader McConnell, and Speaker of the House Boehner. These are the GOP leaders; these are the apices of the GOP power structure; these are the ones who should coordinate the party; these are the ones who should define and coordinate the political battles.

These are a bunch of kittens with balls of yarn.

MSNBC is nothing but pure propaganda now. Heck.. I never thought I’d live to see the day when Pravda was more trusted then our own mainstream media.

We’ve got celebrities calling for Obama to imprison his opposition. We’ve got outright violence being threatened against whites and conservatives in front of applauding audiences.. and actual violence being done against conservatives publicly on camera and the media blacks it out. Does anyone really think they’d have any conflicts with blacking out a whole host of other things Obama might choose to do one day soon?
Obama is so bold and so confident he can say or do anything that he invites a man to the WH who has publicly ranted on a stage about killing American soldiers and their families.. he invites this guy to a WH party and shakes his hand. Why? Because he can! The media isn’t going to call him out. Boehner isn’t.

Obama can give a press conference on hurricane Sandy and mockingly state “We leave no man behind” just weeks after our ambassador is dragged out onto the streets and killed in Benghazi.
Why would he say that? Because he can. The media isn’t going to say anything. Boehenr isn’t.
