Developing: Multiple fatalities in elementary school shooting in Connecticut; Update: At least 26 dead?

posted at 1:01 pm on December 14, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

CBS is reporting that 27 people have been killed by a lone gunman at an elementary school in Connecticut:

CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 14 students, after a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

Updates to follow.

Update: An interview with one of the students on the scene:

Update: Fox is confirming that at least 26 people have been killed:

DEVELOPING: Authorities say at least 26 people, including 18 children, were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school.

A law enforcement official said the shooter, who is dead, is believed to be a father of one of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

An official with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the man apparently had two guns.

Earlier reports of a second gunman are unconfirmed. The Connecticut Post reports that police are also questioning a handcuffed man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the newspaper he was led out of the woods by officers.

Update: While it appears that one gunman is dead, there are more unconfirmed reports of a possible second gunman:

Police report that the school is now cleared of shooters, but they are still treating it as an active shooter situation and all schools in the district remain locked down. There are unconfirmed reports of a second shooter, but it is unclear what happened to that gunman.

State police officers have gone classroom to classroom to make sure the school is clear. Authorities are searching the area, doing roadblocks and checking suspicious vehicles out of an abundance of caution. There are also unconfirmed reports that authorities have surrounded a purple van in Danbury that may be connected to the shooting. …

The first 911 call reportedly came in just after 9:40 a.m., stating that multiple students were trapped in a classroom with a gunman, who authorities say was an adult who had at least two guns. The school locks its exterior doors during the school day, so it is unclear how the gunman or gunmen gained access to the building.

Update: From the White House:

“There is — will be, rather — a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates but I don’t think that day is today,” Carney said, noting also that President Obama believes that “it’s important on a day like to day to  . . . feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and to support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event.”

Update:

Update (MKH):

Local law enforcement held a press conference around 1:45 p.m., with a spokesman for Gov. Malloy and a Lt. Paul Vance in the state police force. There wasn’t much that we don’t already know, but there’s a bit about the timeline of the day.

Newtown Police received the 911 call at 9:30 a.m. They contacted state police and requested assistance from state police and surrounding police forces.

Police entered the school immediately upon arrival and conducted an active shooter search, which means “every door, every crack, every crevice, every portion of that school” was searched, Vance said.

“There were several fatalities at the scene, both students and staff,” Vance said, but said no specific information was being given out until all notifications were made.

“The shooter is deceased inside the building,” Vance said. “The scene is secure.”

Vance said there’s a great deal of search warrant activity going on, and many agencies are working on answering the many questions in this horrific incident.

When sick people decide to do something like this, the method they use is the least of the problem.

Terrye on December 14, 2012 at 3:42 PM

It is interesting that we have had a reduction in overall gun crime but we are obviously seeing a chronic pattern of unstable people getting weapons and then heading for a vulnerable crowd. This guy managed to get to the most vulnerable of us all.

But per your point China is experiencing a pattern of attacks on kids in schools… just today a guy attacked more than twenty kids but he used a knife.

The method does seem to matter but I am not sure what legislation could prevent this kinds of crimes or keep weapons out of their hands.

This was gun-free zone; a place that only serves to announce that vulnerability to these crazies. I know the liberals think banning guns in places like school zones sounds like a good idea, but there is a reason these attacks never happen at places like gun shows, NRA conventions, etc.

With a ratio of defenseless to adults that favors an animal seeking to hit such a place. If our children are going to be put in an environment then it needs to be as safe as possible, a stupid buzzer system isn’t going to make it so.

When my daughter came home from school, she saw what was going on, and she told me her teacher is an ex-marine and he’s awesome, and she feels certain he’s got a gun stashed somewhere. I hope he does, and I thank God for men like this, who served their country and now do their part to make my child feel safe at school.

Has anyone answered these questions yet?

Why most of these tragedies have only occurred recently?

Repeating firearms have existed for over 150 years – the Colt revolver for example.

Why didn’t those kinds of massacres occur 150… 120.. 100 years ago?

Why didn’t these tragedies occur back when select fire – fully automatic weaponry were easily available?

Why do these tragedies almost always occur in “Gun-Free” zones – where the law-abiding are denied the right of self-defense?

And why do they happen a lot of the time in heavily Democratic states with that already have tight gun-control laws?

Galt2009 on December 14, 2012 at 4:58 PM

America is unique in this insanity.

keep the change on December 14, 2012 at 3:33 PM

America is not unique either in proportion of the populace that is armed nor in mass shootings. Switzerland has higher incidence of gun ownership than america does. Mass school killings have happened in Japan, Germany and elsewhere. Only partisan gun control advocates think America is unique.

This tragedy is gut-wrenching alone and the left is already p*ssing on the children’s graves. All they care about is politicizing every tragedy to fit their narrative.

New Jersey and Connecticut already have gun control laws and yet, a man was able to obtain guns to enter a school and kill people, especially children. OK, exactly HOW will additional gun control laws prevent the next tragedy? I’ve been asking this question for years and received no response; not from the Brady group, not from the media, not from Hollywood celebrities, not from any anti-gun zealot.

Why? I thought you guys were the smartest people ever. I thought you had the answers to everything. There’s no correlation between gun control laws and shootings so how do you know they’ll work?

Ah yes, “We must do something!” is the mantra. So let’s not do something that works, let’s just randomly make laws and cross our fingers, hoping for the best. That would have to mean that human life has no meaning to the left.

If the left is so outraged over the shooting then the concept of right and wrong must exist. Yet we never address issues if whether or not they’re right or wrong but if they’re fair! How come the concept of morality never enters the mind of the left until it becomes politically expedient?

You cannot reject morality, only to call upon it when it serves your interests. Yet we see violence committed by OWS and unions and the left never applies moral principles to address them.

The left supports pot because they claim that we haven’t been able to stop the drug war yet somehow, we can stop gun ownership? Prohibition never worked either.

I’ll ask this question again, knowing full well that nobody on the left will answer. Please provide details on what type of gun laws you would implement that would have prevented this tragedy and explain how they would have been effective. Keep in mind that this country had fewer gun control laws decades ago with fewer tragedies.

I’m not stating that teachers with firearms would have prevented this tragedy but to simply advocate gun control laws without clear, logical thinking is an argument for the terminally stupid.

Before you start pointing fingers, remember this: the most tragic shooting have occurred under Obama’s watch so I can easily blame him. Who needs evidence when everything I say is correct? I can blame Obamacare, the rise in food stamps, the poor economy, the Democrats’ incivility, Hollywood, every leftist idea, etc.

I would normally sit back and wait for the “tolerant” left to respond with no facts to back them up. However, I am really sick to my stomach and extremely angry over this tragedy so I’m calling it a day.

To clarify, I’m not blaming Obama. My point is that blaming others with no facts to back up isn’t solving the issue.

I know people who’s lives were saved from a gun against an assailant. If you refuse to accept that fact then human lives are nothing more than pawns to your false religion (liberalism).

That humans lives are nothing more than pawns to leftists is a given – look at the Left’s recent reactions to Patrick Moran and Steven Crowder for evidence.

Sigh –looked at those listings myself – it appeared to be a listing of just about every crime incident that was somehow connected with a school.

I am asking about mass shootings like the kind that occurred today – how many of that type occurred in the past?

Galt2009 on December 14, 2012 at 6:16 PM

Galt2009 on December 14, 2012 at 6:16 PM

According to the Wikipedia page, the first one in the US was 1966.

So perhaps the “refutations” I referred to, were incorrect.

I read your post “at 4:58 PM” again more carefully this time. You appear to have about 6 questions, which IMO are mostly rhetorical. Some of the answers would depend on the respondent’s politics. If they were on the left their politics would probably provide them with factually incorrect answers.

Anyhow, I have no more time today for this thread.
