Developing: Multiple fatalities in elementary school shooting in Connecticut; Update: At least 26 dead?

posted at 1:01 pm on December 14, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

CBS is reporting that 27 people have been killed by a lone gunman at an elementary school in Connecticut:

CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 14 students, after a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

Updates to follow.

Update: An interview with one of the students on the scene:

Update: Fox is confirming that at least 26 people have been killed:

DEVELOPING: Authorities say at least 26 people, including 18 children, were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school.

A law enforcement official said the shooter, who is dead, is believed to be a father of one of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

An official with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the man apparently had two guns.

Earlier reports of a second gunman are unconfirmed. The Connecticut Post reports that police are also questioning a handcuffed man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the newspaper he was led out of the woods by officers.

Update: While it appears that one gunman is dead, there are more unconfirmed reports of a possible second gunman:

Police report that the school is now cleared of shooters, but they are still treating it as an active shooter situation and all schools in the district remain locked down. There are unconfirmed reports of a second shooter, but it is unclear what happened to that gunman.

State police officers have gone classroom to classroom to make sure the school is clear. Authorities are searching the area, doing roadblocks and checking suspicious vehicles out of an abundance of caution. There are also unconfirmed reports that authorities have surrounded a purple van in Danbury that may be connected to the shooting. …

The first 911 call reportedly came in just after 9:40 a.m., stating that multiple students were trapped in a classroom with a gunman, who authorities say was an adult who had at least two guns. The school locks its exterior doors during the school day, so it is unclear how the gunman or gunmen gained access to the building.

Update: From the White House:

“There is — will be, rather — a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates but I don’t think that day is today,” Carney said, noting also that President Obama believes that “it’s important on a day like to day to  . . . feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and to support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event.”

Update:

Update (MKH):

Local law enforcement held a press conference around 1:45 p.m., with a spokesman for Gov. Malloy and a Lt. Paul Vance in the state police force. There wasn’t much that we don’t already know, but there’s a bit about the timeline of the day.

Newtown Police received the 911 call at 9:30 a.m. They contacted state police and requested assistance from state police and surrounding police forces.

Police entered the school immediately upon arrival and conducted an active shooter search, which means “every door, every crack, every crevice, every portion of that school” was searched, Vance said.

“There were several fatalities at the scene, both students and staff,” Vance said, but said no specific information was being given out until all notifications were made.

“The shooter is deceased inside the building,” Vance said. “The scene is secure.”

Vance said there’s a great deal of search warrant activity going on, and many agencies are working on answering the many questions in this horrific incident.

You need to learn some history before trotting out such tripe. The first thing that Nazis and Communists did after taking power was to strip the public of privately-owned guns.

Bishop on December 14, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Yep. Alfred Flatow was a Jewish veteran of the German army, who competed for Germany in the 1896 Olympics.

What if he – and an unknown number of other Germans, Jews and non-Jews alike – had not registered his firearms in 1932? Or if the Weimar Republic had not decreed firearm registration at all? What if the Nazis, when they took power in 1933 and disarmed social democrats and other political enemies, or when they decided to repress the entire Jewish population in 1938, did not have police records of registered firearm owners?

Can it be said with certainty that no one, either individually or in groups small or large, would have resisted Nazi depredations?

One wonders what thoughts may have occurred to Alfred Flatow in 1942 when he was dying of starvation at the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Perhaps memories of the 1896 Olympics and of a better Germany flashed before his eyes. Did he have second thoughts, maybe repeated many times before, on whether he should have registered his revolver and two pocket pistols in 1932 as decreed by the Weimar Republic? Or whether he should have obediently surrendered them at a Berlin police station in 1938 as ordered by Nazi decree, only to be taken into Gestapo custody?

We will never know, but it is difficult to imagine that he had no regrets.

Actually, there is. As a CT resident, I would advocate legislation to offer to all CT teachers free firearms and defensive gun use training, and, for those who pass the usual background checks, concealed carry permit licensing. I would also rescind the “no guns on schools” rule to the extent of permitting permit holders to carry.

Even if few teachers took up the offer, animals like this would know longer be able to assume that no one could fight back. And, those teachers (or parents) who chose to carry could defend their kids.

As the law now stands, it is an open invite for evil doers.

JohnGalt23 on December 14, 2012 at 3:21 PM

America screwed itself a long time ago with guns. Other countries sometimes have mass shootings. But they are exceedingly rare. America, however, produces them as part of its culture.
Even if you cut off the supply of guns today, there are so many already in existence in so many homes that these mass shootings will happen for the next 50 to 100 years just using current inventory. This guy was not a common street criminal, he was just another psychologically marginal personality who went crazy and decided to grab his gun.

Because of America’s gun culture, you won’t be able to go anywhere without going through a metal detector, including your kid’s public school. Your doctor. Your dentist. Your local arena. Wal-Mart. The whole country will become a giant airport.

Rather than eliminate the guns, conservatives would rather make a Faustian deal with big brother to keep the guns. They’d give up freedom just to maintain the ironic delusion that handguns keep America from becoming less free. Between the freedom the left is working to take away, and the freedom the conservatives will gladly give away to preserve their guns, America will be broke, socialist hellhole, with high unemployment and regular mass shootings.

Just for comparison on the gun control issue and for the lostmother:
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/6-shot-at-new-life-church-gunman-2-churchgoers-dead
6 shot, 2 killed, and 2 others killed in Denver by the same guy a few hours earlier.

This was only a couple miles from my house – in very red Colorado Springs – where concealed carry permits are “shall issue” if the applicant has a clean record. Stopped by a volunteer security guard with concealed carry. If nobody at that church had been armed, and the guy had gotten into the sanctuary, the death toll would have been in the dozens or even hundreds.
Law abiding citizens who are legally armed can stop these tragedies.

I say allow the school staff and teachers to be armed – if they choose to do so. The death toll from psychos like this latest one would be far less.

They are the heroes of the left and the teachers of our children.

Not to forget Roe v. Wade. We decide who has the right to live.

What do you expect to come out of this culture? People who respect life?

Gelsomina on December 14, 2012 at 3:32 PM

So you blame the founders?

Not at all. The founders could never have forseen the insanity that the culture has embraced. America is unique in this insanity. But not unique in having freedom. So the guns are not what makes America free. And the left is taking away your freedom anyway, leaving you all to play with your guns in any case. Without economic freedom, you have no freedom.

KTC is a special one, so keep this comment in mind when you read his meanderings on societal ills:

BTW, our humanity does not come to us even at birth. What we are is the subtotal of our life experiences; our goals, our successes, our loses, our joys and pains. As we get older, we accumulate more of what makes us human. A fetus, of course, has none of those. It is just only the beginning phase of what will become a human being at far later date.

I’ll give you half-credit for that. It was lazy Christians who stopped being “the salt of the earth” in post-WWII America, that allowed the Counter-culture Revolutionaries to abolish the open ‘public recognition of God’, here.
.

It’s your precious free markets. Everything has a price in your hypercapitalist world. No right or wrong. Just bought and sold.

Nope. You get no credit for that one.

“I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.

- George Mason, co-author of the Second Amendment during Virginia’s Convention to Ratify the Constitution, 1788

“A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves …”

- Richard Henry Lee, writing in Letters from the Federal Farmer to the Republic, Letter XVIII, May, 1788.

“The people are not to be disarmed of their weapons. They are left in full possession of them.”

- Zachariah Johnson, Elliot’s Debates, vol. 3 “The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adoption of the Federal Constitution.”

“… the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms”

- Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789, Pg. 2, Col. 2 Article on the Bill of Rights

“And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the Press, or the rights of Conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; …”

- Samuel Adams, Philadelphia Independent Gazetteer, August 20, 1789, “Propositions submitted to the Convention of this State”

“Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.”

- George Washington, First President of the United States

“To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.”

- Richard Henry Lee, American Statesman, 1788

“The great object is that every man be armed.” and “Everyone who is able may have a gun.”

- Patrick Henry, American Patriot

“Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?”

- Patrick Henry, American Patriot

“Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not.”

- Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the United States

“The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that … it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; … “

- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Justice John Cartwright, June 5, 1824. ME 16:45.

“The best we can help for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.”

- Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-8

“One loves to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them.”

- Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 1796. The Writings of Thomas Jefferson

“We established however some, although not all its [self-government] important principles . The constitutions of most of our States assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent, (as in electing their functionaries executive and legislative, and deciding by a jury of themselves, in all judiciary cases in which any fact is involved,) or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”

- Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824

“No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms.”

- Thomas Jefferson: Draft Virginia Constitution, 1776.

Gun control advocates always point to the word “militia” in the Second Amendment as proof that the Founders would support gun control laws. That contention is not supported by the historical documents. As the Founders continually acknowledged, A MILITIA IS THE WHOLE OF THE PEOPLE. In fact, in the Second MILITIA Act of 1792, ALL able-bodied, white men over the age of 18 were required to possess a gun.
