Developing: Multiple fatalities in elementary school shooting in Connecticut; Update: At least 26 dead?

posted at 1:01 pm on December 14, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

CBS is reporting that 27 people have been killed by a lone gunman at an elementary school in Connecticut:

CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 14 students, after a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

Updates to follow.

Update: An interview with one of the students on the scene:

Update: Fox is confirming that at least 26 people have been killed:

DEVELOPING: Authorities say at least 26 people, including 18 children, were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school.

A law enforcement official said the shooter, who is dead, is believed to be a father of one of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

An official with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the man apparently had two guns.

Earlier reports of a second gunman are unconfirmed. The Connecticut Post reports that police are also questioning a handcuffed man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the newspaper he was led out of the woods by officers.

Update: While it appears that one gunman is dead, there are more unconfirmed reports of a possible second gunman:

Police report that the school is now cleared of shooters, but they are still treating it as an active shooter situation and all schools in the district remain locked down. There are unconfirmed reports of a second shooter, but it is unclear what happened to that gunman.

State police officers have gone classroom to classroom to make sure the school is clear. Authorities are searching the area, doing roadblocks and checking suspicious vehicles out of an abundance of caution. There are also unconfirmed reports that authorities have surrounded a purple van in Danbury that may be connected to the shooting. …

The first 911 call reportedly came in just after 9:40 a.m., stating that multiple students were trapped in a classroom with a gunman, who authorities say was an adult who had at least two guns. The school locks its exterior doors during the school day, so it is unclear how the gunman or gunmen gained access to the building.

Update: From the White House:

“There is — will be, rather — a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates but I don’t think that day is today,” Carney said, noting also that President Obama believes that “it’s important on a day like to day to  . . . feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and to support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event.”

Update:

Update (MKH):

Local law enforcement held a press conference around 1:45 p.m., with a spokesman for Gov. Malloy and a Lt. Paul Vance in the state police force. There wasn’t much that we don’t already know, but there’s a bit about the timeline of the day.

Newtown Police received the 911 call at 9:30 a.m. They contacted state police and requested assistance from state police and surrounding police forces.

Police entered the school immediately upon arrival and conducted an active shooter search, which means “every door, every crack, every crevice, every portion of that school” was searched, Vance said.

“There were several fatalities at the scene, both students and staff,” Vance said, but said no specific information was being given out until all notifications were made.

“The shooter is deceased inside the building,” Vance said. “The scene is secure.”

Vance said there’s a great deal of search warrant activity going on, and many agencies are working on answering the many questions in this horrific incident.

You should have closed the barn door 250 million guns ago. 250 million, yet somehow we don’t have 250 deaths every day.

You’re going to need a plan, but remember, if you plan on confiscating then you better be prepared.

The point is that he went at a time when the doors would not be locked, allowing him to skip all that new check-in stuff. Thus premeditation. That will be helpful in building a case against the 2nd person that the police pulled out of the woods, if in fact he turns out to be a suspect.

I don’t know. But something’s got to change.

So you’re acknowledging that the only benefit from gun controls laws is simply to make you feel better.

If you acknowledge that you have no answer then how do you know that gun controls will work?

It’s also sad how you anti-gun zealots are willing to put your false beliefs above everything else. “Something’s got to change.” OK, let’s change the tax laws. There, we changed something so gun deaths will now stop.

How about instead of “doing something” we do something intelligent? How about looking at facts first and see how we can implement procedures before passing laws that will do absolutely nothing? I’ve been asking this question for years and have never received an answer.

Oh, I forgot. You’re a liberal which means everybody else is wrong.

And all you NRA types can say is more guns. Arm teachers. Arm everybody. Can’t you see that this society is awash with guns *and* also awash with desperate, hopeless people….. Those poor children….those poor parents…

You think making guns harder to get will change anything? Let’s have that debate but the emotionally charged time after a shooting is not the best time to do it. People who support gun control are impervious to facts even at the best of times.

We don’t even know for sure what guns were used and how the guns were obtained. Norway recently saw a worse massacre. Sweden which is awash in guns hasn’t. Statistics show that violent crime is reduced in municipalities which have more lenient gun control laws.

I’m disgusted at the shooting but should anyone really be surprised?
In a society that celebrates a woman killing her own unborn child as a form of birth control this sort of thing seems inevitable. A culture where people discard their own offspring in such a manner is bound to produce more people that would shoot children in an elementary school.

gwelf on December 14, 2012 at 2:05 PM

Exactly!

Here’s just two stories that I remembered about teen girls giving birth in a toilet and trying to flush their babies like waste.
http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-72815794.html

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=6057161

Why is it so shocking to read stories of mass murder when America is already killing how many unborn babies every year?

But we don’t see those deaths every day do we? It’s all hidden. No major blaring headlines. No TV dramas. The deaths occur behind closed doors sanctioned by the government in a nice clean sterile environment.

We place a higher value on dogs and cats then we do on our own unborn children!

A mother can go into an abortion clinic right up until birth practically, and have their unborn baby sucked out. An we wonder why some other parent would go into a school and kill children with a gun? All of those kids could be legally killed right up until birth in America! And if they had survived the abortion attempt.. and are found crying in a bucket…. even our own President would deny that baby from being cared for by a doctor!
And lets not forget death panels! Oh yeah.. the children who survived abortion have now grown up and are preparing to abort their parents… for the same reasons the parents justified abortion. Too costly to care for and too much of an inconvenience.

And we blame the gun?
You’ve got to be kidding me!
Ban abortion!

Galt2009 on December 14, 2012 at 2:43 PM

They’ve existed since, at least, the 12th century in China. Didn’t you learn about the Great Chinese School Massacres Caused By Firearms in the 12th century in school?

Resist We Much on December 14, 2012 at 2:49 PM

Yeah. Maybe you could shoot up a few schools to make your point.

lostmotherland on December 14, 2012 at 2:42 PM

Nice try, junior.

The point is it won’t be your skinny ass trekking into the Everglades or the Blue Ridge mountains to tell people who rely on guns to feed their families that it’s time to give them up. Or did you plan on carving out exemptions like liberals do with every other putrid scheme they dream up?

So yeah, like I said earlier, you need to define “gun freak”.

Moreover, Dr Manhattan is not the one arguing. At some point you have to walk away. None of the people who responded to you surprised me. In at least one case it confirmed my opinion of him (just his beliefs not up or down).

hyper-moral equivalency. They have blurred the lines between right and wrong and the concept of divine providence along with it. This is merely the result of that erosion of the American soul.

It’s not the left that did this. It’s your precious free markets. Everything has a price in your hypercapitalist world. No right or wrong. Just bought and sold.

lostmotherland on December 14, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Sorry to sound insensitive, but it seems every tragedy is a “photo op” for the police chief, governor, president. I am tired up to my neck, of politicians co-opting tragedies for photo ops.

Raquel Pinkbullet on December 14, 2012 at 2:48 PM

And cover ups and diversions. Lots in the news. The ME will be a hellish fire, soon, Oaf in Chief making solitary decision, lots of blood and treasure from the US to be lost…no one cares.

What about the celebration of abortion?
A culture where parents can embrace the killing of their own offspring is capable of horrific things.

gwelf on December 14, 2012 at 2:52 PM

I don’t know. But something’s got to change. And all you NRA types can say is more guns. Arm teachers. Arm everybody. Can’t you see that this society is awash with guns *and* also awash with desperate, hopeless people….. Those poor children….those poor parents…

Maybe we should just ban liberals like you from owning guns, since it’s unstable liberals like you who are responsible for most of these shootings.

ROFL

You need to learn some history before trotting out such tripe. The first thing that Nazis and Communists did after taking power was to strip the public of privately-owned guns.

Precious free markets? HAHAHAHAHA You sound like every know-nothing leftist radical in America, screaming “Revo1ution!” while enjoying the fruits of the very free market you decry.

Spare us the fake outrage you worthless troll. Society is not “awash” in guns. There are plenty of desperate hopeless people like you who post insulting stuff to get the attention you don’t get in the real world.

And BTW, the NRA stands for gun safety not “more guns.”
