Video: Cavuto cuts off Dem rep when she won’t offer any spending to cut

posted at 9:21 pm on December 13, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Politico, a media metaphor for the state of “negotiations.” There’s nothing left to say except the occasional “frank” reiteration of positions, so why go through the motions of dialogue? All that’s left is for Boehner to capitulate and then everybody goes home for Christmas.

Since there’s nothing left to say, let me offer a few poll numbers instead. Promising

…and not so promising:

Note the Republican numbers. Pew has a new poll out today too and that doesn’t look too promising either:

The killer numbers there come from independents, but the fact that even 37 percent of Republicans agree that the GOP’s not making an effort to compromise gives you a sense of who’ll be blamed by the wider public if we topple over the cliff. Not to go full eeyore on you either but here’s one that bodes badly even for the GOP’s “Plan B,” in which they simply allow the Bush tax cuts for the rich to lapse and then pound the table for major cuts in February as a condition of raising the debt ceiling:

If Boehner et al. decide to go to the wall on the debt ceiling next year, they had better get a boatload of concessions for it to make the potential fallout in 2014 worth it.

I’ll leave you with this from Philip Klein to put all of the above in perspective: “Democrats have gotten away with promoting the fantasy that the nation can balance the budget by making modest adjustments to spending while protecting 98 percent of the country from tax increases. But they won’t be able to get away with this fairy tale forever. At some point, reality will set in, and the reality is that in order to protect entitlements from major changes, Democrats will have to back massive across the board tax hikes. Let’s see how polls turn out when middle class Americans are asked whether they want to pay significantly higher taxes in order to minimize cuts to entitlement programs, or how they’ll feel when interest rates and inflation are soaring as a result of the national debt.”

So let it be. If you believe these polls then there is a serious disconnect between reality and the ability of the average citizen to understand what is happening.

Time to batten down and let it self-correct because there are too many people who want to the party to continue right up to the part where everything collapses.

Count me out, I’ll be over here not spending a damn thing beyond the absolute necessities. The guvment can’t get blood from a stone, they can’t make me spend or expand my business unless they hold a gun to my head, and if that happens then all bets are off anyway.

What she suggests is a great plan. Boehner should go ahead with it.

The Republicans should repeatedly refer to the middle-class tax cuts as an extension of the Bush tax rates. They should stop allowing the Dems to act as if they are giving the middle class some beneficent bonanza.

Behold, Progs:

Greeks earning $55,000 to face 42% tax rate.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greeks earning more than €42,000 ($55,000) per year will now be taxed at a new top rate of 42 percent, under a major new tax reform bill submitted to the country’s parliament late Thursday.

Under the new guidelines, the 42 percent top tax rate and earnings threshold replaces the previous level of 45 percent for incomes above €100,000 ($130,770). The new rate is part of a simplification of the country’s tax rules. There are currently eight tax bands ranging from 18 percent to 45 percent. These will be replaced by three tax rates: 22 percent, 32 percent and 42 percent.

What’s to compromise? The Sequester WAS the cave compromise that was struck in order for the Weeping Boner and his idiot House to raise the debt limit to allow the Indonesian and America-hating dems continue in their budgetless, un-Constitutional spending binge. The Sequester WAS the deal. And now there’s supposed to be a compromise on the cave? LOL.

The House needs to just pass a bill continuing all Bush tax rates and leave it at that. If the Senate won’t even entertain the bill, amend it and vote, to be reconciled, then the Sequester will just happen and the House bill will stand.

After that, that House CANNOT allow the Senate and the Ineligible Indonesian Dog-Eater to get away with another year of budgetless spending. There will have to be a budget and the feral government will have to shut down if the left refuses to do that. Period.

But, back to the Sequester – that was the cave that Boner collapsed on in order to keep the cash spigots flowing for the Indonesian and the dems. There is nothing to “compromise” on that cave. Anyone who thinks so is a friggin idiot.

100% of the GOP House majority does not want to raise taxes – not just the far right. I agree that it appears to be a politically untenable position.

We should send over the extension of the Bush Tax cuts for $250k and under. If Democrats are going to raise taxes on the middle class to pay for their entitlement state, there’s no way in hell I’m willing to let them get away with it without paying a heavy political price let alone blame us for it.

Their only other alternative will be something like QE7 by 2016,
which acts as a regressive tax anyway (they all voted for Obama – f ‘em), but since they get the EITC, maybe it all works out.

None. To be discussed save for 2 stupid words devised by liberals to scare those who have no brains and have limited math skills. Whether GOP agrees to higher taxes or not, we are already on a road to fiscal hell what with other taxes kicking on as well as more and more business regs pushed via residential fiat. Small businesses won’t hire, large ones are already announcing lay offs, so more welfare, more unemployment insurance that leads to “work force reduction”.

So, whether GOP gives in or not, NOTHING is going to change. NOTHING.

OK, now it is the Voters of Dallas Texas in the 30th Congressional District who have some explaining to do.

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (Democrat) has represented the 30th District since 1992 and in 2012 she was re-elected with 78.9% of the vote with 169,889 votes. http://www.politico.com/2012-election/results/house/texas/

That Rep. Johnson was re-elected after she was caught awarding scholarship money that was meant for her constituents to her own relatives is a complete disgrace.

Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide’s two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers’ causes.

The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member’s district.

http://hotair.com/archives/2010/08/30/congresswoman-redirected-scholarships-to-relatives-aides-children/

Every single time we see Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson’s name we should all remind people of how corrupt she was in that scholarship scandal.

The Voters of Dallas evidently need to be reminded of Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson’s scholarship scandal over and over again.

No win situation. Best way to win these is not to play. Give Obama a plausible alternative like tax hikes on true millionaires & billionaires (mostly Democrats anyway) in exchange for FIRST total repeal of Obamacare. They have to say they tried. Sound sincere. When he refuses, vote present and let the Dems do whatever they want.

If the American people, contra all facts and reason, want to lay this at the feet of the GOP, then f–k the American people. If they want more of the last few years PLUS job killing tax hikes on the most productive individuals, let em have it.

Obama did the same thing a while back, if I remember correctly. When asked what he would cut, he just bobbed and weaved. Progressive Heretic on December 14, 2012 at 12:26 AM

This is why the idea that the Republicans should simply vote “present” on the “tax increase/compromise” is so attractive. If the Republicans get even a little bit from Obama, say a limit on spending or the smallest cut in entitlements, that will be all the Dems and the MSM need to blame the coming recession on them. Can’t you hear it now? “This new recession is all the fault of those evil Republicans for insisting that we limit tax increase to only 1.6 trillion dollars. If we had only increase them to $ 1.7 trillion everything would have worked out fine.” If you are going to get the blame for the inevitable catastrophe and are only going to be paid with crumbs. DON”T ACCEPT THE CRUMBS.

WHY did he apologize there at the end?! Ugh. Do not apologize, guys. EXPOSE AND MOCK THEM.

Sir Loin on December 14, 2012 at 2:38 AM

Perhaps he apologized because he eventually realized that the woman was incompetent. Cavuto was trying to engage in a issue-discussion if not even argument with someone who clearly lacks the capacity to be lucid and make much if not any sense.

We really DO have a lot of these mental-incompetents in Congress today. Many of them from the Left elected by skin color and/or gender and all because they’re Socialists demanding the US become Communist. So it’s impossible to interact with them on any lucid level…it’s like yelling at an alligator, all it understands is snapping, lying underwater and eating puppies.

Lourdes on December 14, 2012 at 3:46 AM

Its hard to beat Obama at the rhetoric game. He is masterful at using his army of left wing media parrots. The only thing that will save the GOP is to prove that liberalism does not work. Let Obama raise the taxes on the rich. Be very clear that the GOP disagrees with it. Make sure everyone knows these middle class tax cuts are BUSH TAX CUTS. Do not let Obama put his name on them.

Dennis D on December 14, 2012 at 6:47 AM

I think that Obama will get blame too…just not as much. I also think that some of the pundits on radio and even in the blogs have lost touch with rank and file Republicans and even a lot of conservatives. People want this over. They are tired of all of this. Needless to say the Democrats have lied to the American people..so what is new and the day will come when that becomes apparent.

But this stuff of threatening to shut down the government and demands that Boehner not give in, as if he had the votes to do otherwise is only helping the Democrats.

Terrye on December 14, 2012 at 7:05 AM

Our fellow citizens will NEVER agree to increase their own taxes or cut their own benefits.

This ends ugly.

It sure does. I hope that you’re doing what you need to do to ensure the safety of you and yours.

Washington Nearsider on December 14, 2012 at 7:31 AM

Since we don’t have a free press in this country, it’s up to Republicans to explain how getting tax money to cover 8 days worth of government spending isn’t solving the fiscal cliff problem, it’s just delaying it. Do the right thing and worry about the politics later.

Here’s the truth, no matter what happens Republicans will get blamed. If they cave on taxes, the story will be the death of the Republicans. If the cave on taxes, and the economy goes South, it will be Republicans fault because they didn’t cave enough, or fast enough. Just do the right thing and explain it to your constituents because the press will not.

If Republicans make up their minds the press is never going to be on their side and they do things with that in mind, they’ll be fine.

Theworldisnotenough on December 14, 2012 at 8:34 AM

Regarding the image for: “GOP image has not recovered from the debt ceiling crisis”

This particular kind of chart is exactly the kind of statistic that was used to run former President Bush into the ground. The statistic for republicans is made up of democrats hating republicans because they would not give Obama a blank check in August 2011, PLUS republicans who wanted them to hold an even stronger line against Obama than they did. Two polar opposites, as far as their reasoning goes. Added together.

The media uses this combination of apples and oranges to claim that people don’t believe in what the republicans are doing, and to undermine republican support for stronger measures. That was true when George Bush was up against Nancy Pelosi. Our opinions were used to tell George Bush to cease and desist.

With Bush, the media then encouraged us to join in on dumping on Bush, of course, we said he was not fiscally responsible enough, and presided over too much of Nancy Pelosi’s profligate spending…reduced in MSM media spin to, Republicans Hate George Bush too. It is not popular to defend G.W. Bush.

The media is concocting statistics to get Boehner to cease and desist as we speak. Somehow Fox News got people to say yesterday in a poll that 89% want spending cut.

But in the poll above, “Making an effort” is equated with “working with Obama” which, ahem, shore aint the same thing in my book.

We need tax reform with new permanent tax rates, and a simpler tax code. We need SS/Medicare reforms. I would put the fiscal cliff on hold. That is the deal that gives both sides a year to figure the taxes out. Obama’s payroll tax cut is a PRIME indicator that something is wrong with SS and the tax withholding for the payroll tax. Self employment SS is 15%. I do want to go over the cliff, so there will be a reason to do this reform.

And, we have to get all the parasitic programs out of SS. End disability claims by people who are not seniors, for god’s sake. (And I would move Self employment taxes to a separate system.)

Eddie Bernice Johnson’s history as congressman is worth looking into. It started when, as state senator, she drew an absurdly gerrymandered Black congressional district. She then promptly ran in it and won. And her career has sunk lower ever since.

WannabeAnglican on December 14, 2012 at 8:56 AM

Neal shouldn’t apologize because the congresswoman was rude.

These people are supposed to work for us but I believe that they personally feel that we work for them.

Too bad other journalists aren’t as tough.

My dad worked in the financial industry. He is always giving me Christmas presents that “teach a lesson.”

One was a beautiful Confederate States of American bond, with only two coupons clipped.

More pertinent, I also have two beautifully framed Zimbabwe $10 trillion notes.

Lesson learned everyone?

If there ever were a Congressman/woman that needed to be cut off it would be Ms Johnson. A truthful and honest statement has not escaped that mouth in 20 years. DWS pales in comparison.

The 2nd graph just tells us that people who make under 200/250K want the govt to take it from the next group up instead of them, too. Feed the beast before you get to me kinda attitude. Everyone knows deep down that taxes go up or down at times. They just don’t want it going up on them right now.

Kissmygrits on December 14, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Oh, Neal does this everytime he has someone on who blathers their answers. Did it to Hatch the night before.

Kissmygrits on December 14, 2012 at 9:42 AM

And…Gallup has called me the last 2 nights. I don’t answer the call. Maybe there’s a lot more pizzed about the results of the election not taking their calls, either.

Kissmygrits on December 14, 2012 at 9:46 AM

Evidently, according to those on the left that I know on FB and elsewhere, the fiscal cliff is just something dreamed up by the right to scare folks, there’s nothing actually to it, like the Y2K scare and December 21, 201………………

Uh oh.

Bob's Kid on December 14, 2012 at 10:23 AM

How about this…

Instead of the GOP voting “present” on any “fiscal cliff” legislation, how about not showing up at all? No quorum = no work. The Democrats cannot pass a bill by themselves in the House. Since they don’t add up to the majority (and according to Article 1, Section 5, Clause 1 of the Constitution, it would take 218 House members to constitute a quorum; there are only 193 Democrats in the 112th Congress, and only 200 in the 113th), nothing will get done.

And since spending bills have to come from the House, Harry Reid will have nothing to block in the Senate.

And Rome burns anyway. But at least the GOP didn’t start the fire.

falcon on December 14, 2012 at 11:05 AM

But they won’t be able to get away with this fairy tale forever.

Yep. Let’s see the MSM hide the fallout from the public then….and explain why they aren’t as culpable as the Democrats.

GarandFan on December 14, 2012 at 11:08 AM

I would like to see the poll fundamentals, but if true this is telling in more ways than one.

Most importantly, it shows the abject stupidity and unfamiliarity with details from both Republicans and Independents. I may not agree with Boehner’s proposals and feel he will ultimately cut a deal no matter what the cost- but the man has been working several proposals. That is in addition to legislation the House has passed and Harry Reid’s Senate has stalled.

“Hi Republicans and Democrats. I’m the Federal Budget. Curious where I’ve been for the last four years?”

But Republicans are…to be mostly blamed?

King Obama goes golfing and plans his $4 million vacation to Hawaii. Republicans will be in session until the end of the year. Boehner is taking heat from his party for the various deals rumored to be in the pipeline or statements on taxes he is making. Obama chides, well, everyone, for not having a balanced approach. What is Mr. Obama’s plan anyway? Has he formulated one?

There is plenty of blame over the years for our current situation. But the President is accumulating deficits of $1.2 trillion a year. He is ultimately the one responsible for leadership of our country. And he’s shown none. His only proclivity is to divide us and destroy each other. While he sits on a beach in Hawaii.

But it’s Republicans fault or something.

I guess stupidity is infectious.

Obama just won big in an election where he said he wanted to raise taxes. And we keep listening to the far-right in Congress who live in like 60%+ Republican districts that we should fight him on this. The same people who have cost us the Senate twice now by throwing up crackpot candidates like O’Donnell, Angle, Akin, etc.

Do we never want to win a national election again?

Stop listening to these far-right morons and cut a deal already. And pick a battle we can win, like crushing the public unions.

blue13326 on December 13, 2012 at 9:41 PM

You can’t pin Akin on the far right. So stop trying.

Also, my representative was sent to Washington to not raise taxes. He has never voted to raise taxes in his entire career, and we knew that when we elected him . He is fighting for what his constituents want and is getting punished for it by leadership. If he caves, he will not be reelected. Why should we listen you, someone who has no say in electing my representative?
