Pelosi: “Don’t even think about” trying to raise the Medicare age
posted at 4:41 pm on December 13, 2012 by Erika Johnsen
All of this ‘compromise’ flying back and forth is practically giving me whiplash.
As I have said, don’t even think about raising the Medicare age. We are not throwing America’s seniors over the cliff to give a tax cut to the wealthiest people in America. We have clarity on that. But, again, on all these other things, go to the table and negotiate.
Translation: I am not going to give an inch on Republicans’ suggestions, but Republicans better start doing what we want — ’cause that’s how compromise works, dammit!
Enough already with this false equivalency that any and all entitlement reforms are coming at the expense of ‘giving a tax cut to the wealthiest people in America.’ We’re on our way to our fifth straight trillion+ dollar yearly deficit, and even if President Obama’s proposed tax hike does everything he says it will, it still will not accomplish anything substantive in helping pay off our debt or decrease the size of government. As Boehner elucidated this morning, Obama and the Democrats are just willfully pretending that spending isn’t the problem.
Pelosi published an op-ed about the ostensible “assault” on seniors that raising the Medicare age would be on Wednesday, but Dan Foster has her number:
First, raising the eligibility age for Medicare isn’t about arbitrarily stiffing seniors. The principle behind it is that Americans are both living longer and working longer, and that old-age/retirement entitlements should reflect that shift. Second, any plan that could pass both chambers would surely make the change gradually. Pelosi admits as much later in the piece. There simply aren’t going to be any 64-and-a-half-year-olds who wake up to find out that their insurance options have changed overnight. In fact, the data suggests the overwhelming majority of affected seniors would continue to be covered by other means. Last, if the Republicans manage to get this “trophy” it will be because the president of the United States — and the leader of Mrs. Pelosi’s party — said, as recently as today, that he was open to the idea.

Communist propaganda. No one is getting a tax cut. Keeping tax rates the same is not a tax cut.
I believe, in a time not that far distant … say fifty years, most Congressional democrats would have been arrested for treason. Today, they’re voted back in office.

Mediscaring didn’t work, Romney won seniors because they know the system is unsustainable and they have kids and grandkids to think of. Why be so adamant about “protecting” Medicare?

Who cares what Pelosi “demands”? She doesn’t control enough votes in the House to do squat about it either way. The negotiation is entirely between the House GOP, the Senate Dems, and Obama. In fact, you can practically take the Senate Dems off the table (as has effectively been done anyways) and leave it just to House GOP and Obama, since Obama will push the Reid to whip the Senate Dems to sign off on whatever deal he reaches with the House. Mitch McConnell actually has more power in the discussions than Pelosi, since Harry Reid will need a few GOP votes in the Senate for cloture on the deal. Of the five key leadership players (Obama, Boehner, Reid, McConnell, and Pelosi) she is actually the one with the least influence in the matter… and by least I mean none.

I’m thinking within 10 years (if the US is still around), Medicare will be gone. Seniors will have to buy insurance the same as everyone else.
There’s no sense in having ObamaCare, Mediaid and Medicare. Government health care coming our way.
Of course that’s really bad news for seniors because they use a lot of the medical services and well, that stuff is just plain expensive.

This is why I keep saying that the Republicans need to give in on the taxes and shift the debate to spending.
They do that and the leftwing ideologues like Pelosi will be exposed.
Obama wants to divide the GOP on the taxes but the table can be turned if they agree to an increase and force the divisions in the Democratic party to emerge.
The Democratic coalition is built upon identity policies and government programs. That will split apart if you press it.

I like how everything is presented in the context of “to give a tax cut to the wealthiest people in America”, even though the President has similarly said he absolutely will not allow that to happen.
So if we take that as a given, we wouldn’t be raising the Medicare age in order to do that anyway. So again we’re back to the tired Democrat meme of “reasonable reductions” that magically happen despite not reducing anything.
The Schaef on December 13, 2012 at 5:02 PM
I agree. It really does put them on the spot and the spotlight moves to entitlement reform. I actually think there are plenty of Dems who will break with Pelosi over this (including Obama) so I am not sure if this is going to be something that changes the GOP’s long term problems but it’s about saving the country rather than the party.

This is bassackwards. We’re really going to sit around and argue about at what age citizens should start receiving government benefits? Really?
Sad that we can no longer hope for a strong economic system, free of government interference and the Federal Reserve Board/IRS taxation scam, where the average citizen can comfortably retire well before they reach 60 if they choose to do so.
That should be our goal and vision.
Not when Uncle Same will or will not start sending us checks.

Raise the SS age to 70. I speak as an over fifty year old person. I need twenty more years of career time, seriously. I don’t want to retire and get Medicare. REALLY
Second. Make a law that public pensions, state and local governments and the military, should not pay Old age retirement pensions, until a person is, 1. retired and 2. over 70. Where personal money has accrued I don’t suggest Stealing a persons investment, just prolonging it over their lifespan or letting it go to your heirs.
Third. No government employee should invest more in, or recieve more out of a public pension than the average worker. They can put their extra money somewhere else, but let all government pension, including Senators, Congressmen, Presidents, be based on directed investments by the person, not from the government pension.
Fixed Ladies.
Fleuries on December 13, 2012 at 6:43 PM
Prepare for an approximate doubling of military pay, then…as the retirement benefits being payable upon retirement from active duty is the justification for paying military members so little compared to the hardships of military life.
At least now it only gets paid if the member stays till retirement.
