Report: Menendez intern was illegal immigrant and sex offender — and DHS held off on arresting him until after the election

posted at 4:01 pm on December 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

I’m as surprised as you are to find a New Jersey Democrat wrapped up in something so shady. Why, this might well ruin the good name of Bob Menendez.

Imagine if it had come out before the election. He might have won by only 15 points.

The prosecutor’s office in Hudson County, N.J., said Sanchez was found to have violated the law in 2010 and subsequently required to register as a sex offender. The exact charge was unclear because Sanchez was prosecuted as a juvenile and those court records are not publicly accessible. The prosecutor’s office confirmed to AP that Sanchez registered as a sex offender, although his name does not appear on the public registry.

Authorities in Hudson County notified ICE agents in early October that they suspected Sanchez was an illegal immigrant who was a registered sex offender and who may be eligible to be deported. ICE agents in New Jersey notified superiors at the Homeland Security Department because they considered it a potentially high profile arrest, and DHS instructed them not to arrest Sanchez until after the November election, one U.S. official told the AP. ICE officials complained that the delay was inappropriate, but DHS directed them several times not to act, the official said

During discussions about when and where to arrest Sanchez, the U.S. reviewed Sanchez’s application for permission to stay in the country as part of President Barack Obama’s policy to allow up to 1.7 million young illegal immigrants avoid deportation and get permission to work for up to two years. As a sex offender, he would not have been eligible.

Note well: “Several times.”

Clearly someone at ICE thinks this stinks of politics or else the story wouldn’t be leaking. The question now is who’s empowered to investigate it. Something for the Senate Ethics Committee maybe, to probe whether Menendez influenced DHS into backing off? I’m sure Barbara Boxer, as chairman, will be diligent into getting to the bottom of a fellow Democrat’s possible malfeasance. The DHS inspector general is another option; so is Issa’s House Oversight Committee maybe. I confess that I don’t know the rules offhand about one chamber of Congress investigating possible misdeeds committed by a member of the other chamber. Even if there’s no rule against it, there may be a gentlemen’s agreement in effect that each house polices itself. Technically, Issa wouldn’t be investigating Menendez, he’d be investigating DHS. But the obvious potential in embarrassing a Democrat might launch a tit-for-tat between the Republican House and Democratic Senate. Maybe the local U.S. Attorney in Jersey is the best/only option.

This makes two prominent examples this afternoon alone of a prominent Dem receiving some sort of suspicious break from law enforcement. Like Ace, I’d sure like to know how Jim Moran’s son was able to plead down from felony domestic violence assault after smashing his girlfriend’s head into a garbage can in full view of two cops. Exit question: What happens if Menendez is implicated in DHS’s hands-off approach to Sanchez here? Hmmmmm.

I am young. So what? there are alot of fat young people.

And many women postmenopause are thin. But it TAKES work. You can’t just be lazy and eat like you did when you were younger and expect to maintain your weight.

As you get older, you have to diet more properly (eat very healthy) and work out.

I work out 3 times a week, have about 10% bodyfat and a very athletic body.

Wow, don’t ever pass yourself off as having graduated from Harvard Medical School. You’d be eaten alive.

It’s not about the production of fat it is about the storage of fat. Metabolism comes into play as does diet. But your body will look to store fat when it senses reduced calories coming in.

Society pushes the ‘if you’re not thin you’re repulsive’ meme too. No wonder young women start starving themselves and popping the diet pills.
When I go into certain restaurants now, I order the same thing…every time..so I can avoid looking at the menu and the ‘numbers’. I’m lucky in that I’ve learned to live with my ED and have started making friends with my physical imperfections.

I watched the piece here on HotAir. I haven’t watched anything elsewhere. From what I know of lap band surgery (my wife was a candidate–elected not to go through with it as she was consistently losing weight without), doctors prefer for you to lose a pretty significant amount before the surgery. That gives them room to do their work, so to speak.

It’s not about the production of fat it is about the storage of fat. Metabolism comes into play as does diet. But your body will look to store fat when it senses reduced calories coming in.

If losing weight were as easy as not eating then everybody would be doing it and we wouldn’t need overbearing shaved Yeti screaming “Let’s Move” at us.

Happy Nomad on May 7, 2013 at 10:01 AM

The other point is that there’s a difference between regular “fat” people and the morbidly obese, like Christie. I know plenty of fat people who wolf down the Mickey D’s and regular soda and biggie size fries. But among the few morbidly obese people I know, I don’t see them eating in obviously unhealthy ways. (Of course, it’s possible they eat healthy in public and then go home and gorge themselves on bon-bons).

My point is, something has gone wrong with Christie to make him 150lb+ overweight. Whether it’s psychological or medical or what, I don’t know, but it isn’t just a case of laziness. And when you get that big, it’s very, very hard to lose the weight through diet and exercise alone. So, bravo to Christie for taking care of business.

gryphon202 on May 7, 2013 at 10:14 AM

Let’s see-young woman are being bombarded with calories and nutritional info-on menu boards and the like. Thanks to that fat ho’ in the WH-a woman is hard-pressed to escape ‘the numbers’.
The Nannystate’s obsession with nutrition and thinness is helping NO ONE!!

annoyinglittletwerp on May 7, 2013 at 10:10 AM

no offense, but that just comes across as whining to me

how does nutritional info hurt you?

young men have pressures to manage what they eat and stay fit and look attractive as well

nobody is forcing anyone to look good, its a personal choice for everyone

I like to be in shape, and therefore make a lot of sacrifices that some fat peers don’t (ie control what I eat and working out regularly…both of which aren’t EASY)

nonpartisan on May 7, 2013 at 10:15 AM

Out here in Flyover Land the men actually take off their shirts from time to time. Maybe because we’re hanging out on the boat, or digging post holes for a new fence, or reroofing the outbuilding. And we even do so in front of our family members.

Shocking, I know. Wherever nonP is from they must not do such things. Sounds boring and uptight to me, and honestly going swimming in a 3 piece suit isn’t all that enjoyable.

You’re welcome sweetie. We woman have immense pressure to look like a standard that doesn’t exist. Models that themselves are anorexic, airbrushed celebrities. I have a six year old daughter, and I want her to grow up with a healthy body image, because I know puberty will hit her hard. It did me. I had a C cup at the age of 10 and hated my body. My hope is the next generation of girls love themselves no matter what their size..

melle1228 on May 7, 2013 at 10:20 AM

Lap-band surgery was a total failure for my friend. She constantly had to have it adjusted and she could not stick with the diet (yes, you still have to diet while on a lap-band). Eventually she had to have it removed because it became stuck in a position that caused her to constantly throw up after eating even the smallest quantities of food. Total FAIL!

How did she eventually lose weight – she sucked it up and hired an in-home personal trainer that worked with her 3 times per week and helped her modify her diet. She lost 150lbs and she looks and feels great.

I wish the Governor luck, but it was definitely a bad experience from my friends POV.

nonpartisan on May 7, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Oh stop.. I held my nose and voted for Romney.. Considering the lack of fight that Romney put in against Obama; that was actually pretty magnanimous of me. My first loyalty as a voter has always been to my own political ideology. If the Republicans keep nominating people who don’t fit with it and who actually line more with Democrats than the do with me; then why should I vote their way?

melle1228 on May 7, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Very well stated. Frankly, if the Republicans nominate Christie in 2016, the idea of a third party will be viable. There will not be a lick’s worth of difference between Hillary and Christie except for gender. Hint to the GOP establishment — fiscal responsibility is an important qualification but it’s not the only qualification in a candidate. If your chosen one is a big government, anti-liberty, constitution abrogating statist but fiscally responsible — that doesn’t make the sale.

Not sure how Christie could run as a Republican presidential candidate and give a big ol’ man-hug to the democrat candidate at the same time anyway. We already got that from Romney and McCain.

Nope, I held my nose for McCain and Romney and was adamant that they would be better than Obama. Then Christie went all man-crush over Obama and helped get him re-elected. … and the most electable candidate evah, Romney, failed to fight with all of his might to win — that really got me. We kept waiting for the “final push” and unleashing of the kraken — first after the convention, then during October, then in the final week. It never came. Republican Party wants to go the way of the Whigs, they can do it without me.

annoyinglittletwerp on May 7, 2013 at 10:28 AM

There are some incredibly stupid comments in this thread. One thing makes you fat… food. Too much bad food makes you fat, nothing else. And when you are morbidly obese it is easy to start shedding weight by simply reducing calories. someone the size of Christie burns well over 3000 a day just sitting there doing nothing. There are some hereditary aspects that can make it a little easier or harder to shed weight, but nobody gets that size because of genetics, they get that size because they have a food addiction.

I used to weight almost 500 pounds, and over the past year I’ve lost over 100 pounds. No silly surgeries, not even any exercise. I lost it but putting down the processed junk food and only eating healthy whole foods. And the weight just keeps on falling.

Except that’s not true. Certain drugs, particularly steroidal anti-inflammatories, can make you fat. An injury can make you fat when it renders you incapable of moving like you used to, particularly if you were athletic before. Age itself plays havoc with most people’s metabolisma, particularly males.

I’m glad you found something that proved to be a magic bullet for you. It’s not that simple for everyone, and judging from his appearance lately, I’d say that even the lap band was not a magic bullet for Governor Christie.
