Quotes of the day

posted at 10:39 pm on December 11, 2012 by Allahpundit

Jimmy Hoffa, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said Tuesday he expects Michigan unions and lawmakers to break out into “civil war” after the state legislature passed right-to-work bills that would weaken unions’ power.

“This is just the first round of a battle that’s going to divide this state. We’re going to have a civil war,” Hoffa said on CNN’s “Newsroom.”

***

“It’s disgraceful,” said Sue Brown, who said she’s not a union member but fears right-to-work laws would lower wages for all. “The unions and the UAW have created the middle class.”…

For all the shouting, the actual benefit or harm of such laws is not clear. Each camp has pointed to studies bolstering their claims, but one labor expert said the conclusions are inconclusive.

“Very little is actually known about the impact of right-to-work laws,” Gary Chaison, a professor of labor relations at Clark University in Massachusetts, said Monday. “There’s a lot of assumptions that they create or destroy jobs, but the correlation is not definite.”

***

“Michigan is making this move because it saw Indiana do it,” said Robert Sikkel, a labor expert in Grand Rapids, Mich. “They’re afraid businesses may move to Indiana. Other states are going to look at this too to see if it’s best for them.”

Though right to work laws have been around since the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, the movement has been growing since Wisconsin fought a similar battle with unions over two years ago.

“More and more states are looking to improve their economies and become more attractive to businesses and this is seen as one step toward that,” Sikkel said.

***

Of course, the move is not just economic. It’s political, too. Democrats depend on millions — actually, billions — of dollars in support from the forced dues of union members. If that money supply were to dry up, or even just decrease, the Democratic Party would be in serious trouble.

Which is why President Obama just happened to discuss the situation during his campaign-style visit to the Daimler Detroit Diesel Plant in Redford, Mich., on Monday. “These so-called right-to-work laws don’t have anything to do with economics — they have everything to do with politics,” Obama said. “What they’re really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money.”…

For the right-to-work forces, what is happening in Michigan, like what happened in Wisconsin and Indiana before it, is the result of years of work against the system of union power and mandatory dues. It was a long time coming. “People always say this is a really tough battle, you can’t win,” says Mark Mix. Like the Berlin Wall, Mix says, the entrenched union structure sometimes looked unassailable. “Then one morning we woke up and guess what? We found out it wasn’t nearly as strong as we thought.”

***

It’s a tough choice, and I sympathize with the unions, but the fact is that in the global economy where you have to compete on wages and other elements, of the units of production, you can you either have, you know, high wages with low employment or you can, as Obama would say, spread around the wealth.

The fact is that in the right-to-work states, unemployment is 6.9%. And in the other stays the non-right-to-work, it’s 8.7. So you can choose to have fewer workers who enjoy higher, inflated, unnatural, if you like, wages, uncompetitive wages. Or you can have competitive wages and more people employed, more people with the dignity of a job and less unemployment, more taxation and more activity. I think it’s it the right choice but I understand how it’s a wrenching choice.

RTW laws have EVERYTHING to do with a FREE PEOPLE exercising their unalienable right to CHOOSE FREELY.

No RTW law takes away employees right to collective bargaining. If employees want to form a union, they can. They can’t, however, force their co-workers to join nor can a union demand the employer deduct union dues from employees’ paycheques.

The constant violence from union thugs is the best thing to happen for the right to work. I wouldn’t wish that anyone gets beat up, however the violence perpetuated by the unions is probably one of the largest contributing factors to the continuing growth of union opposition.

While the MSM refuses to cover the violence, you can bet local news does. I doubt National news influences state outcome to the extent it does nationally.

Weren’t there a lot of unions in some country over in Europe in the 1930′s as they were printing a ton of money? I seem to remember reading something about that. Not in a public school with union teachers of course. No, I read it on my own. It’s odd, because I think it led to some calamity, and you would think they would want to teach something like that properly.

For all the shouting, the actual benefit or harm of such laws is not clear.

It doesn’t matter what the benefit or harm of right-to-work laws are. Closed shops and forced union dues are un-Constitutional takings and thefts of private property that never should have passed muster in our courts. There is no reasonable argument that a union is entitled to ownership in a company that it had nothing to do with other than have members lucky enough to have been offered jobs.

Unionism is theft and it is communism. A private company is owned byt he people who built it, not the idiots who are hired to do jobs around the place. If the union people think they’re so smart let them open their own companies. Then, since they own them, they can have their own little closed shops. But they have no right to dictate hiring policies of companies they don’t own and they have no right to have kickbacks from the other employees, just so the unions don’t start their criminal thuggery and destroy the place – as destruction, thuggery, and extortion are really the only things unions do or know how to do.

Unions are the scum of the Earth. They should all rot, despicable pieces of sh#t that they are. And all the supporters and enablers of unions need to go straight to hell, too.

Just remember, there were only 86,000 at the Tea Party’s biggest march on Washington. That’s what MSNBC said and it must be true. Big Ed said that he outdrew Beck, too, and when Sgt Schultz says it, you can take it to the union’s credit union. /

Crowder handled the Union Goons with class.

The thugs are on the ropes and desperate. That is why they are acting out like petulant children.

Americans don’t like coercion and violence against speech. This episode hurts the unions. Obama is also diminished because it is clear to many Americans that he associates himself with this type of thuggery. These protests have the potential to weaken Obama because Crowder already has enough of a profile, and with Hannity’s megaphone this will arouse sympathy and anger which will rally and unify our side.

Ironically, it’s a positive development. He took some blows, sure, but maybe it will make everyone on our side realize what we are up against and that is sorely needed right now.

Let’s see:

“When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government,” he said. “The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on this country is getting to be outrageous and unfortunately Arizona has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry.”

Mr. Dupnik said it is time for the country to “do a little soul searching.”

He added: “The vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business … This has not become the nice United States that most of us grew up in.”

… and from the man himself:

Urging Americans to forward on “in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds,” his speech evoked memories of the six killed and many wounded.

Obama condemned our nation’s increasingly harsh public dialogue, or “politics, point-scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle.”

“Rather than pointing fingers or assigning blame, let us use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully,” he told 14,000 people at the University of Arizona’s McKale Memorial Center in Tucson.

Instead, he called upon us “to sharpen our instincts for empathy, and remind ourselves of all the ways our hopes and dreams are bound together.”

… but yesterday we got angry rabble rousing.

Yep, by his own side’s statements, Barack Obama was directly responsible for inspiring that union mob to commit mayhem. Thank goodness no one was seriously hurt.

/and frankly, he really was responsible for that mob violence and condoning it, while the right had absolutely zero to do with the random act of violence by a disturbed psychopath who was completely apolitical.

“The president believes in debate that’s civil,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today.

But, targets on geographical maps/congressional districts mean the actual, physical heads of Democrats.

Gotcha.

Pneumatic wrench? Box wrench, open end wrench, crescent wrench, impact wrench, torque wrench, ‘monkey wrench’? Perhaps a ratchet? Hmm.

You can’t use a certain word that describes the desire of a state to remove itself from the union…and you can’t call Mooo-chelle a certain Star Wars character.

annoyinglittletwerp on December 11, 2012 at 11:58 PM

The word HA will not allow

Schadenfreude on December 11, 2012 at 11:50 PM

Actually, most of us here are trying to prevent it. It is not those of us who are constitutional conservatives that are engaged in trying to destroy our system of government. It is the rebels who have managed to get elected to federal office and are now trying to tear down the country from within and destroy the Constitution who are engaged in that word.

In a sane world, he and his regime would be impeached for breaking his oath of office. He is definitely not defending and upholding the Constitution of the United States of America. In any way, shape or form.

No more strawberry fields…because they want bloods, not us.

I agree with you. I just want HA to allow the word. It’s still a free land, kind of.

Plus, they wanted to ban me for using the term “pitchfork”. The sensor allows it but they didn’t like that I used it :)
