Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on December 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

Expect wall-to-wall fiscal cliff coverage from the Sunday shows until the end of the year or a deal is reached, whichever comes first. Which is another way of saying that you should expect wall-to-wall fiscal cliff coverage until the end of the year. Today it’s Tom Coburn on ABC plus the high priests of deficit reduction, Simpson and Bowles, on CBS. Expect the latter to reassure Democrats that Boehner’s version of “the Bowles plan” is not, in fact, the Bowles plan.

Meanwhile, Tom Cole will appear on CNN to repeat his call for a quick compromise on tax hikes for the rich and Dick Durbin will hit NBC to do some more hemming and hawing about the sort of entitlement reform that he knows is absolutely necessary but which his base opposes anyway. The line-up via WaPo:

NBC’s Meet the Press: Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL); Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA); former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA); Julianna Goldman, Bloomberg; Helene Cooper, New York Times; Bob Woodward, Washington Post; Lawrence O’Donnell, MSNBC

CBS’ Face the Nation: Erskine Bowles; Alan Simpson; Newark Mayor Cory Booker; Major Garrett, CBS; Joe Klein, Times; Michael Gerson, Washington Post; Norah O’Donnell, CBS

ABC’s This Week: Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK); Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI); Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX); Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ); James Carville, Democratic consultant; Mary Matalin, Republican consultant; Paul Krugman, New York Times; George Will, ABC News; Matthew Dowd, political strategist

Fox News Sunday: Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY); Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN); Amb. Michael Oren, Israel; Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard, Kirsten Powers, Daily Beast; Kimberley Strassel, Wall Street Journal; Juan Williams, Fox News

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK); Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN); Christine Lagarde, IMF; Stephen Moore, Wall Street Journal; Jackie Calmes, New York Times; Mark Zandi, Moody’s Analytics; Dana Bash, CNN

It’d be nice if 1 of these hosts actually asked Democrats that even if they get their tax increases, what do they intend to do with the other 90-95% of the problem of closing the yearly deficit. Needless to say I won’t be holding my breath or wasting my time watching.

Meanwhile, Tom Cole will appear on CNN to repeat his call for a quick compromise on tax hikes for the rich.

Will Boehner and Cantor “discipline” Cole for going off message? No, I thought not. He’s not a conservative, so he can dissent. Possibly even a stalking horse for Boehner’s eventual cave.

Key West Reader on December 9, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Why are they even bothering? Nobody cares.

There is no fiscal cliff, as long as the printing presses keep running. Only when the money actually disappears will anyone in Washington take this seriously.

As Bobby Jindal said, we’re already way off the cliff, the only question is who gets the blame when we hit the bottom. And that’s not even a real question, given the state-run media we have now.

Clarice has it nailed while we genuflex over some imaginary fiscal cliff which we will get blamed for no matter what the result the regime has successfully screwed up the rest of the world in spades. But none of that ever gets discussed. Just more theme and diversion. never mind…..

Exactly — Too bad nobody asks the Washington bozos that question. In fact, why not ask “How much would you get if you taxed ALL income earners?” The real problem is simply being ignored by the MSM.

Pappys’ Politician Prediction: MANY of these people will lie.

And the only way that any republican (the lowercase party) will get on these shows is if:

1. They are really a RINO/Moderate/Conservative basher.

2. They are one of the “obstructionist” “hostage takers” that the media can bash immediately after the appearance on the show.

NBC’s Meet the Press: Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL); Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA); former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA); Julianna Goldman, Bloomberg; Helene Cooper, New York Times; Bob Woodward, Washington Post; Lawrence O’Donnell, MSNBC

****Complete Ruling class panel to tell us what to think.

CBS’ Face the Nation: Erskine Bowles; Alan Simpson; Newark Mayor Cory Booker; Major Garrett, CBS; Joe Klein, Times; Michael Gerson, Washington Post; Norah O’Donnell, CBS

*****Michael Gerson, Bushie (does NOT LIKE True Conservatives).

ABC’s This Week: Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK); Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI); Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX); Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ); James Carville, Democratic consultant; Mary Matalin, Republican consultant; Paul Krugman, New York Times; George Will, ABC News; Matthew Dowd, political strategist

****Coburn might be from YeehawLand but he’s a friend of McCain and Obama (that’s all you need to know).

Mary Matalin is the only one with real TRUECON cred.

Fox News Sunday: Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY); Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN); Amb. Michael Oren, Israel; Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard, Kirsten Powers, Daily Beast; Kimberley Strassel, Wall Street Journal; Juan Williams, Fox News

****Bill Kristol?……Ermagosh horrible Ruling class/Georgetown cocktail party republican.

****Bob Corker…….represents Hickville (to the NYC/DC cabal but he’s trying to get in their good graces by selling out on taxes).

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK); Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN); Christine Lagarde, IMF; Stephen Moore, Wall Street Journal; Jackie Calmes, New York Times; Mark Zandi, Moody’s Analytics; Dana Bash, CNN

****TOM COLE?…….GAG, complete sellout. Big Conservative talker, not a TRUE Con.

We have these news programs to be heard. Sunday is pretty much it.

tomas on December 9, 2012 at 9:25 AM

After the tragic accident Saturday morning involving two Dallas Cowboys football players, alcohol and a car, surely someone on one of these shows is going to be advocating banning cars. Or do I have to tune-in to a sports channel to see that?

Think of the needless tragedy that could be averted if we just banned cars, and alcohol. Hundreds of thousands of lives a year would be saved. And it would be good for the environment, and our health, if we all had to bicycle 30 miles to work every day. Much, much better, overall, than banning guns. And easier to enforce: you don’t have to worry about people carrying concealed cars.

This is such a slam-dunk, the progs should be all over it. (Actually, it’s what they want, but, as usual, they won’t say it publicly, but will try to do it by, say, making gasoline too expensive).

mr.blacksheep on December 9, 2012 at 9:27 AM

We’ll all be told that the fiscal cliff has been averted and the world saved by a bipartisan deal which will raise taxes by $1.2 Trillion dollars (OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS) and that will cut the deficit in half (BY THE YEAR 2042)!

Meanwhile, the rest of us know that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING was done that had any impact whatsoever on the national debt nor was entitlement spending cut one solitary nickel.

And the news coverage will show them all patting each other on the back and singing their own praises in the halls of Congress after they’ve just voted unanimously in favor of this compromise bill.

I knew this guy who worked as a contractor for the Social Security Administration back in the 80′s.

He told me that at the end of the year, it they can get their books to close within a few hundred million dollars that they think they are doing just great.

But the better story was about how they would go out to find out what happens when checks aren’t cashed. In one case, they sought out the man and found him at a trailer camp. They knocked on his door and introduced themselves. After talking a bit they asked him if he had received SSA checks for the last ten years and he replied “yes.” The asked why he didn’t cash them, he replied that he had “gotten back as much as he had put into the the system and stopped.” Then then said ” no, no,no, you can cash them .. they are yours,” he replied “no, he had gotten back what he put in.” They asked why he kept them then, he replied that he figured eventually that “the SSA would figure it out and come for them.” They then asked what had happened to the checks, he opened a drawer and there they were.

J_Crater on December 9, 2012 at 9:54 AM

So I was thinking. If Boooosh had given a tax break to all but the top rate, and we pretend that there wasn’t a negative impact on our economy, then today debt would be at 15.5 T instead of 16.2. Everything would be considered Rosie and B.O. would agree to extending those, ending his second term at only 21T in Debt.

Why did Boehner remove 4 republicans from committee posts? Not rinoish enough? While I haven’t looked up specifics for these 4 (Huelskamp, Amash, Schweikert & Jones), I did read generally that their voting records were more conservative.

I rarely watch Fox news any longer. What’s the point? All 1 happy family of government media. Major Garrett went to ABC, CNN’s John Roberts goes to Fox. Who’s conservative there? Certainly not O’Reilly, Geraldo Rivera, or Megan Kelly who laughed her way through election night. Only 1 I listen to is Savage.

I think we need to stop using this language of the left. Why are we continuing to use the terms and phraseology that were successful against us? Class warfare has worked…and our message needs to be repackaged before we can attempt to sell it again. Our vocabulary needs an overhaul, and Republicans and conservatives should start by dropping “the rich”.

It really chafes my a$$ to see George Stephanopoulus pretend to be a journalist.

Corker gives an unequivocal statement: Social Security, Mediscare and Medicaid must all be reformed if the country’s fixcal crisis is to be addressed. Stepsalotinit pretends to ask Stabenow a real question, to-wit: Is Corker correct, must these programs be reformed?

Sounds like a real question, doesn’t it? But Stabenow refuses to answer the question, and tells Steppy she isn’t going to answer it. Instead she goes off on a delusional effort to re-frame the question in terms of the Democrat/MSM narrative.

Steppy just smiles, and lets her get away with it.

How does Jake Tapper get away with snarking about “Republican operatives” manipulating the MSM, when he works alongside Stephanopoulus?

So long as the liberal, anti-Republican bias of the MSM and its ongoing distortions of the news cycle results in propaganda and false narratives , the country will continue to be worse than ignorant. It will be misinformed.

Unless Republicans understand this problem, and begin treating the MSM as the enemy agents of Democrats and Liberalism and Progressivism that they are, it isn’t going to get any better. There has to be a coordinated strategy to marginalize and discredit tools like Stephanopoulus individually, and the MSM generally. (Republicans and Conservatives had better read Rules For Radicals and take a quick review of Obama-Axelrod strategy for manipulating the MSM narrative.)

Frankly, I don’t think the Republicans have either the intelligence or the courage required for this essential mission.

Belle on December 9, 2012 at 12:56 PM

We will talk and talk about this “cliff” but all that will get done are the things both sides agree on which is the doctor fee fix for medicare, the AMT fix so 28 million who did not withhold to pay the AMT rate do not get stuck and that taxes will not rise on the 98% of taxpayers. There is no agreement on anything else and so the rest of the sequester will go through as is. The only thing in doubt is how much the administration, Harry Reid and the MSM insist the GOP be humiliated and will they maximize that by letting the year end pass before they take the other measures above. Good governance would suggest you get it done before New Years; so it is almost a sure bet they will do it retroactively in the new year after the alleged calamity has been perpetrated and the public has been as agitated as much as possible.
