Shocking: Charlie Crist converts to Democratic Party

posted at 1:01 pm on December 8, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

In a stunning turn of events which likely shock …. nobody, former Florida Republican Governor Charlie Crist announced on Friday that he was now Florida Democrat Hoping To Be Governor Charlie Crist.

Crist sent out a tweet that said, “Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President (at)Barack Obama!”

The tweet included a photo of a smiling Crist and his wife Carole as he held up a Florida voter registration application. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Crist signed the papers changing his affiliation from independent to Democrat at a Christmas reception at the White House. President Barack Obama greeted the news with a fist bump.

“I’ve had friends for years tell me, ‘You know Charlie, you’re a Democrat and you don’t know it,’” Crist told the newspaper Friday night.

Here’s the photo in question, with Crist holding up his new voter registration form.

Crist With Wife

At the Tampa Bay Times, Adam Smith reminds us of the rather breathtaking “evolution” that the former Governor’s projected image has undergone over the years he’s spent in politics. At one time, his tough on crime, no nonsense attitude was the basis for the nickname, “Chain Gang Charlie.” He has, at various times, referred to himself as a “Ronald Reagan Republican” and a “Jeb Bush Republican” among other monikers.

Crist also is a long time supporter of several positions which would seem to make him a curious fit for the Democrats. Not only has he been a steady defender of capital punishment, he was responsible for Florida’s “bring your guns to work” law. He was also a state leader in opposing gay marriage, working to get the state constitution amended to that effect, and even opposed gay couples being able to adopt children. (Though he has since backpedaled on that one a bit.)

Given all of that, I’m left wondering precisely how widely Crist would be welcomed by Democrats, beyond simply enjoying a headline featuring a Republican switching sides. There’s nothing wrong with people having positions which truly evolve over time as they mature and collect more information on the subject matter. But that’s not as common late in life, and if you’re perceived to be “evolving” for reasons of political convenience rather than a true shift in your belief system, voters tend to pick up on that and not reward the candidate for it. If Charlie Crist sees this as his meal ticket back into the Florida Governor’s Mansion, he may be in for a disappointing outing, and there are already plenty of life long Democrats with an eye on the seat who he’d need to beat in a primary anyway.

Charlie Crist’s time as a Democrat will no doubt be every bit as successful as Arlen Specter’s after he converted in 2009.

I look forward to seeing him crash and burn in the 2014 Florida gubernatorial primary as a lifelong Florida Democrat wins the nomination.

Shocking: Charlie Crist converts to Democratic Party

Charlie Crist epitomizes everything that is wrong with American politics. Power for the sake of power. No core moral or ethical values, everything is negotiable, everything is for sell. It is the disease, the cancer eating away America, allowing the Marxist’s like Obama to wrest control of America from it’s citizens.

Why the Obama Administration keeps misreading the Arab spring.

Just remember, back in 2008 establishment Republicans wanted McCain to pick either Crist or Lieberman as his running mate. And then they backed Crist over Rubio in the primaries, getting the NRSC to weigh-in on Crist’s side.

Crist’s conversion is just more proof as to the idiocy of the establishment.

He’ll make a great First Lady in Florida. Is that his wife?

What hyphenated American is he? I know that blacks are supposed to be called African-Americans and red skinned people are referred to as Native-Americans but what are Orange people supposed to be called? Sun kist-Americans maybe?

Very confusing in Possum Holler.

Not the first or last moderate bushy to jump parties. The mods b**ch and moan about party unity and then are the first to flee. They gave us Romney in the primaries and then ripped him to shreds during AND after the general election.

This is waaaay off topic but really who cares about Crist??

– Whatever happened with Benghazi? Did they release the time line and details yet? Was there a stand down order? Who gave it? Why did they stick with the video story? ….. I know it’s months old now but did anything get answered????? Is America totally apathetic now when it comes to politics and the truth?

Gosh.. This guy gives sleazy politicians a bad name, and the Ds can totally have him. My favorite comment on this on the Twitters yesterday was about how the Florida Rs should mail out old Charlie Crist 2006 mailers to D primary voters. The one in question posted was about the Oompa Loompa’s strong pro-life views. I’m sure that the War on Womenz crowd would love that one.

Also, how much do you want to bet that any mention of Marco Rubio gets on Crist’s nerves? Hee.. especially Rubio and 2016 speculation. Remembering the Oompa Loompa’s landslide defeat in 2010 gives me happy thoughts.

I haven’t lived in Florida for a while, but when I did, pretty much everybody supported capital punishment. Times may have changed, but I suspect that (a) more likely, Crist will give up his support for the death penalty, since he is changing all his views anyway, or (b) less likely but still reasonable, there will be no issue in the Florida Democratic Party with Crist supporting capital punishment, because many Democrats in Florida support it too.

This is the nature of politicians from both sides of the aisle. It’s always about them.

Even “rock-ribbed” conservatives will do this where they will leave the GOP and jump to some ridiculous 3rd Party when they lose a Primary.

All sorts of Southern Democrats jumped ship to the GOP when they saw their districts becoming more conservative. I doubt it was purely over ideology, I think it was more about their political survival.

Crist though is so transparent it’s laughable.

Just a reminder …

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, and chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (to whom I’m sure a lot of you Conservative slaves have donated to) …

Actually endorsed Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio for that Florida Senate seat. Yes, Ayatollah Cornyn basically wrote out a statement that was a “pat” on the head to Rubio saying essentially … “This boy’s got potential but not for this job … NOT LIKE CHARLIE CRIST DOES!”

He did the same thing in Pennsylvania with Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey – and old Arlen switched parties on him!

Not only that … but Ayatollah Cornyn sank $10M into a California Senate race that Barbara Boxer easily won. He sank another untold millions on Snott Brown in Mass – who got his ass handed to him by a fake indian.

Charlie was a joke – but nobody listened to him in the GOP anyway. I say … beg Charlie Crist to come back to the GOP and then kick Cornyn OUT OF IT!!

HondaV65 on December 8, 2012 at 5:12 PMJ

Yes, it is quite a long litany / legacy of crappy decisions by the Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. In addition to all of the items that you wrote, Cornyn voted for TARP, too. The man has been an absolute disaster.

When he first joined the Senate, he spent his first term as little more than a GWB cheerleader. I have always pictured Cornyn dancing around and waving a pair of pom-poms. That such a lightweight became chairman of the NRSC exemplifies how pathetic the Republican Senatorial leadership is. This Charlie Crist defection is just another arrow in the quiver of whoever primaries the waste of space that is Cornyn.

I hate to say it, but the guy who opposed Ted Cruz, Paul Sadler, made a good case that he has some brains – which is more than Cornyn has ever convinced me of. If Cornyn survives a primary challenge, and Sadler is his opponent, I would truly have a difficult time deciding who to vote against: a Democrat or a squishy Republican clown.

You know who else backed Charlie Crist back then ? Why the esteemed author of this blog post himself – Jazz Shaw.

Jazz was and still is a guest on the Rick Moran show and back then was highly skeptical of any one (read Marco Rubio)challenging Charlie Crist in the 2010 Primaries…i am not a fan of Rubio by any means but i was annoyed at the way establishment Republicans and RINO’s like Jazz did not like Rubio challenging Crist in the primary..

i still remember going on the show and asking Jazz, “what are you afraid of with Rubio running ? if he loses, you get your moderate dream GOP candidate in Charlie Crist, don’t you” ? the response that i got was that Rubio was too young and untested. So look at what the veteran GOP candidate did ? He just became a DUMBOCRAT.
