Inhofe: Obama funneling billions to UN for climate-change redistribution

posted at 4:01 pm on December 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

At issue in the latest video from Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) is the UN’s Green Climate Fund, which aims to garner $100 billion from industrial nations ostensibly to bolster efforts to get developing nations to use renewable, non-hydrocarbon energy rather than coal and oil in their development.  In practice, as we have seen at UN climate-change conferences, te fund has been treated as an entitlement and even a type of reparation by developing nations from the US and the West.  Inhofe, who couldn’t attend this year’s climate conference in Doha, which is just as well, as media around the world has described it as “a farce,” and a “stalemate and failure.”  Inhofe instead put together this video, in which he claims that the Obama administration has sent billions of dollars already into the UNGCF and plans to send billions more even while the US struggles with trillion-dollar deficits:

The Tulsa World reported on Inhofe’s statement:

Media reports support Inhofe’s claim that the Green Climate Fund was a leading topic of discussion in Doha. The fund’s stated purpose is to provide capital and incentives for clean energy efforts in underdeveloped countries. It was agreed to in 2009 and officially launched in 2011, with a goal of raising $30 billion by this year and $100 billion a year by 2020.

How much has actually been paid into the fund, though, is unclear, and a Dec. 4 Financial Times story says the initiative may be “strangled at birth” by squabbling over control of how the money is spent and who qualifies as a “developing nation.”

A December 2011 Bloomberg New Energy Finance white paper said the U.S. had pledged $2.4 billion to the fund and actually paid about $1 billion, but Inhofe thinks the figure is much higher.

Why are we putting any money into this at all?  These are the kinds of activities that can be afforded by nations with large budget surpluses, not by nations teetering on a default of its bond obligations.  In a very real sense, that’s not even our money.  Regardless of the virtue of the effort, which in this case is highly questionable if not outright laughable, the US cannot afford to give one billion dollars away to UN slush funds, let along $2.4 billion or even more than that, if Inhofe is correct.

We can’t afford adime of this — especially while the White House proposes to sit on its hands while the sequestration cuts $500 billion from the military over the next ten years, or struggles to reform entitlements.  Can the White House look soldiers in the eyes and tell them that their aging weapons systems on which they rely for their lives can’t be upgraded while they fund endless parties in Copenhagen and Doha, and send cash to countries because they argue we owe them for the ills which they have entirely visited upon themselves?  Can the administration tell seniors and the disabled that their benefits have to be trimmed while billions go to the UN for a slush fund that keeps corrupt bureaucrats in power in Turtle Bay and end up in the hands of petty autocrats and dictators?

Let’s hope that the FT is right, and that the UNGCF has been “strangled at birth” — and it’s instructive to seewhy:

In a sign of the simmering antagonism overshadowing the negotiations in the Qatari capital of Doha, a group of 17 countries led by China and India have told the conference that the UN should be able to vet any investment made by the new green climate fund.

Such a move would be untenable for the private sector investors the fund is supposed to encourage, say the heads of two international investment groups focused on climate change.

“It would create too much uncertainty and stop people investing,” said Stephanie Pfeifer of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, which represents many of Europe’s biggest pension funds and asset managers.

“It would be like a government setting up an investment vehicle and having every investment it makes go back to the parliament,” said Nathan Fabian of the Investor Group on Climate Change in Australia and New Zealand.

“If one of the objectives of the green climate fund is to attract private sector investment, this would achieve the opposite,” he said. “It would mean the fund would be strangled at birth.”

It’s not about climate change. It’s about the control of capital.  That’s been the case all along.

The un is a slush fund origination getting billions upon billions of OUR money to fund anything they want under any guise they say?

Too bad sandy didn’t level that krap building and send all those worthless worms, who suck off us, someplace else? I just wonder how much money bho has socked away ‘giving’ to the un under various redistributions?

Where is he getting the money for this. GOP controls the House, they should not allow any funds to go to the UN.

rbj on December 8, 2012 at 4:11 PM

In a very real sense, that’s not even our money.

We take on the obligation to repay it so it definitely is our money … or our children’s and grandchildren’s money, more specifically. It’s not Barky’s to give away, though. That’s for damn sure.

It’s well past time we left the UN. No one with a brain would even entertain the idea that an empowered, peerless, competitionless entity should even exist. It is only in the lunatic minds of leftists that such an organization should even be considered. The real shame is how many on the right have given in and accept the existence of such an unnatural, grotesque, and highly dangerous entity.

It’s not about climate change. It’s about the control of capital.

A common theme these days, no? It’s never about what it’s supposedly about with the U.N. and the Obama regime.

Now that Inhofe has let the cat out of the bag what’s next, another video?

docflash on December 8, 2012 at 4:23 PM

Here’s the question, where is the media? Where are those Obama supporters in Detroit, looking for their handout and seeing Obama giving it away to the U.N.? Is this what Obama wants higher taxes on the 2% for? There is no reason to give this administration any extra money, unless it’s to pay down the debt. They have squandered more money on their pet projects, that have all failed, and have never been held accountable by the press. It’s time the Republicans hold them accountable for this and shut down the spigot, which means passing a budget. The fact they have this money to squander is a tribute to the bogus budget system in D.C. and the Democrats refusal to pass a budget, thereby leaving spending at the previous years levels plus a percentage. Boehner is allowing this to happen by signing those continuing resolutions and the President knows that will end if the public gets wind of what’s going on , which is why he wants Boehner to cave on giving him the power to just raise the debt on his own.

Excuse me, Ed. The King said he would not let that happen.

“First of all, the sequester is not something I proposed, it’s something that Congress proposed,” Obama said. “It will not happen.”

I guess the King lied again. It is good to be King.

You propose an intriguing idea and possible bargaining chip for Boehner. That extra 2% should be allocated only towards paying down our debt; there should be no other allocation for that extra “revenue.”

Obysmal is determined to spread our wealth around the globe, expecially to organizations and nations that do not respect our sovereignty. He is so cavalier with “other people’s money” by giving to unaccountable causes. He pays attention to their “wish lists” and ignores the will of the people that he is supposed to serve. The House needs to cut junior’s credit card.

I hope that within my lifetime, as the US financial situation Progressively worsens (pun intended), both the Left, conservatives, and “moderates” could agree that we pull out of the UN and boot them out of NYC.

It’s a total no-brainer. The UN has long, long outlived it’s purpose, which was suspect (anti-western) to begin with. Pull the plug already. It’s an unbelievable waste of hard-earned tax dollars, which could be used elsewhere.

If we want to actually assist other countries and their citizens there are much, much better ways to do it other than via the UN.

SWalker on December 8, 2012 at 4:38 PM

No, only 47% or so of the country would agree with them. Then 47% is easy enough to cheat up to about 51% at the ballot box.

I’ve given up on a lot (Boehner, etc.), but I haven’t given up on thinking that the majority of this country is still comprised of good people. Sadly, Obama has another four years to chip away at that. While his hubris might very well cause him to screw up in a way that could spark the backlash, I’d keep pricing those flights to New Zealand.

86 on December 8, 2012 at 5:09 PM

We can’t afford adime of this

We can’t afford a dime for this or the Departments of Energy and Education, any of the foreign ‘aid’, all the ‘development’ grants, and more. And yes the sums are pretty small. A couple of billion here and there still really only add up to a small percentage of the deficit.

But if we were even vaguely serious about the debt and the deficit, we’d cut the blatantly frivolous spending within a day.

Alas, these ‘little’ extravagances are the perfect sign that we aren’t even vaguely serious about addressing the financial crisis. If you can’t cut subsidies for green slush funds or hand outs to 3rd world mozlem fundamentalist countries full of people who would really like to see the Great Satan go up in smoke…then you are not worthy of respect.
