PolitiFact’s “Lie of the Year” nominees left out 2012′s biggest lie

posted at 9:01 pm on December 6, 2012 by Dustin Siggins

This week, PolitiFact came out with its list of “Lie of the Year” candidates. They include the following:

Largest tax increase: “Obamacare is . . . the largest tax increase in the history of the world.”
– Rush Limbaugh on Thursday, June 28th, 2012 in comments on his radio show
Pants on Fire

Abortion: Mitt Romney “backed a bill that outlaws all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest.”
– Barack Obama on Tuesday, July 24th, 2012 in a TV ad
Pants on Fire

Bain Capital: Mitt Romney and Bain Capital are to blame in a woman’s premature death when they closed the plant where her husband worked.
– Priorities USA Action on Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 in campaign ad
False

‘Likes to fire people’: When it comes to jobless workers, “Mitt Romney says he likes to fire people.”
– Jack Markell on Wednesday, September 5th, 2012 in a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.
False

Deficit blame: “Over the last four years, the deficit has gone up, but 90 percent of that is as a consequence of” President George W. Bush’s policies and the recession.
– Barack Obama on Sunday, September 23rd, 2012 in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes”
False

Jeeps in China: Barack Obama “sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China” at the cost of American jobs.
– Mitt Romney on Monday, October 29th, 2012 in a television ad
Pants on Fire

In response to some missed examples of lies, Red Alert Politics came up with its own list, tweaked to be called “Liar of the Year.” Vice President Biden’s “chains” comment, David Axelrod’s defense of the Administration’s transparency over Libya, and Harry Reid’s claims about Romney’s alleged lack of taxation qualified these liberals for the dubious honor.

Earlier today, I threw my own opinion in the mix at Red Alert Politics, since I saw one egregious, influential example of a lie that PolitiFact had left out: the alleged War on Women.

…I think Adair and his staff missed the boat here. The ‘War on Women’ claim was indeed related to many policy claims. Politicus USA even provided a whole list of policy aspects of the ‘War on Women. Furthermore, the ‘War on Women’ was launched on January 20, 2012 by none other than President Obama when his Administration put out the HHS contraception/abortifacient/sterilization mandate, which is a policy. Prominent liberal pundits like Gail Collins then claimed religious opponents of the mandate were trying to force “their particular dogma on the larger public,” when in fact all the religious organizations wanted was the freedom to not engage in government-coerced action.

The false ‘War on Women’ claim that may have done the most damage to GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012 was Planned Parenthood’s assertion that Romney wanted to “get rid of” Planned Parenthood, when he was actually talking about federal funding for the organization. Romney was eventually forced to run an ad stating he is pro-choice, becoming possibly the first modern Republican candidate for President to run on a platform supporting abortion. He was also forced to declare in a debate that “[e]very woman in America should have access to contraceptives.”

I also pointed out how the “War” impacted two Senate races, was prominent at the Democratic National Convention, and helped give Obama a critical lift with women on November 6. Its impact will also be felt in the future if the HHS Mandate (which, again, launched the alleged “War”) is not overturned, as the nation could see the loss of one-sixth of hospital beds and many adoption centers and schools as the Catholic Church closes operations in America.

To make sure I got the whole story, I spoke with PolitiFact editor Bill Adair, who told me why the “War on Women” didn’t make the cut:

“Lie of the Year comes from statements PolitiFact has rated ‘False’ or ‘Pants on Fire.’ We rate the ‘Lie of the Year’ as the boldest statement or the statement with the biggest reach. Obviously, it’s subjective,” he said. “We didn’t do a fact-check on a statement that there was a War on Women. It was an opinion, and we don’t fact-check opinions. People used it as a sum-up of a variety of aspects of the 2012 campaigns, but it was an overall opinion, not a statement of policy fact.”

I don’t know if PolitiFact’s liberal bias was coming through here, or if the staff just dropped the ball, but I’d say the policy statements and implications were pretty significant, as was the reach. And as Paul Wilson of the Media Research Center pointed out on Twitter, the “War” was even used as a pretext to oppose a ban on sex-selective abortions that was debated in Congress.

Every year, partisans attack or defend PolitiFact for its Lie of the Year. It’s become an annual pre-Christmas tradition. This year, I’m going to join in and say that the “War on Women” should  have at least made the Finals, if not been handed the dubious championship trophy.

Please note that they had to LIE about this ad in order to include something from Romney in the list — the ad, in fact, never said that Fiat’s plans to build Jeeps in China “was at the cost of American jobs.” That was something PolitiFact claimed the ad implied but the ad itself was factual.

As far as the MSM was concerned, the lies told by the rat-eared wonder and the pig-in-a-pants suit about the outrage over a YouTube video still hold true. The whole issue is being covered up by the MSM and the facts are only slowly dripping out so that when the truth is known most of the parasites who voted for Obama will not even be able to connect the dots and realize just how outrageous the administration’s cover-up actually was.

BTW- when compared to Watergate or Iran-Contra, Benghazi and Operation Fast and Furious are worse. Not that you’ll see the same outrage from the MSM.

Romney was eventually forced to run an ad stating he is pro-choice, becoming possibly the first modern Republican candidate for President to run on a platform supporting abortion.

See, a conservative would have just criticized Obama for trying to demonize him, then pointed out the blindingly obvious fact that Obama is the radical on the subject of abortion. Something like, “Whatever you may believe about restrictions on abortion, only one candidate in the history of the nation has ever said that even if a baby survives an abortion, it should still be put to death. That is the extremist position.”

As for Obama – it is easier to just assume he will not tell the truth about anything and go from there. It is hard to rate which lie is worse than any other because they come at a Fast & Furious rate.

Too bad the Kool Aid drinkers that support those lies don’t realize that they will be the first to go… that is the way of it in these things, always caught off-guard by the one they supported until they are no longer necessary. They will continue to criticize the non-drinkers until they don’t have any friends around them… and because they stood up to stop none of it, there will be no one there to stand up for them. Unable to be bothered by learning history, they doom themselves to repeat it. Mind you, they are supposed to be the ‘smart ones’ and they will tell you so at any given nanosecond.

UPDATE: Some readers noticed that our initial analysis of Limbaugh’s claim failed to include references to the penalty that people who declined to purchase health insurance would be asked to pay. After all, the Supreme Court declared that penalty a tax.

The CBO figure we used for our calculation, a total of $104 billion in revenue generated in 2019, is inclusive of all revenues, including the penalty or tax individuals might pay if they do not purchase health insurance. The figure for that year was estimated to be $14 billion for penalties paid for by employees and individuals. (Page 19 of this report.)” From Politifact

=========================

Let me put this another way, WE were wrong to declare this a lie AND we’re wrong about this number. And when you look at Obamacare in aggregate…it’s ALL a tax.

I’m not a Limbaugh listener, but he wasn’t wrong.

The Tea Party won in 2010 because it avoided the social issues. In the wake of the 2012 election, the absolute worst, most stupid thing we can do is babble about abortion and birth control. Our country is going downhill because of insane economic policy. There is not a chance in the world that the social conservatives will get their way on abortion until the economy is fixed. They do have some small chance after the economy is improved.

On a personal note, I would add that I didn’t comment on social issues at all. What I did comment on was lies related to a social issue, one President Obama and the left used to great benefit this year. Nothing, except that it should be Lie of the Year, I wrote about the HHS Mandate was an opinion; I focused on facts.

LIE OF THE YEAR? How about the ones perpatrated by Obama administration officials:

1) Eric Holder was found GUILTY of 3 FELONY COUNTS of PERJURY before Congress for lying under oath in an attempt to keep the ‘Fast & Furious’ cover up in tact. Due to the Holder-hand-picked justice Department refusing to press charges, Congress had no other option but to bestow Holder with the 1st ‘EVUH’ CENSURE of the Head of the U.S. Justice Department!

2) Auto worker Pensions: Obama’s represnetative testifying before Congress regarding the Auto Bailout also was found GUILTY of 1 FELONY count of PERJURY over lying about the Pension Scandal in which 20,000 auto workers were stripped of their pensions simply because they did NOT belong to a union. Again, no one was held accountable & (last I read) the pensions have NOT been restored!

3) Obama / Hillary /Rice: Despite the CIA report immediately declaring the ON-GOING terrorist attack against Ambassador Stevens & 3 other Americans, these 3 LIARS covered up the fact that someone in the White House CHANGED the CIA Report & then LIED for weeks – going out on TV Talk Shows to push the Obama propoganda/lie that the attack in Benghazi was nothing more than a ‘spontaneous protest’ over some video.
– Of course, lost in this was the fact that this administration REFUSED to provide additional security to Stevens/Americans in Benghazi after TWO previous terrorist attacks, ORDERED the military Spec Ops team 2 hours away preparing to launch a rescue mission at the beginning of the 6-hour attack to ‘STAND DOWN’, & how Obama FIRED/relieved of comand AFRICOM General Ham, that base’s commander, for refusing that order & voicinv his intent to launch the mission!

To H@LL with the false ‘War on Women’ – that LIE didn’t involve a BODY COUNT & CRIMES the way THESE did!

easyt65 on December 7, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Furthermore, the ‘War on Women’ was launched on January 20, 2012 by none other than President Obama when his Administration put out the HHS contraception/abortifacient/sterilization mandate, which is a policy.

Correction: The War on Women was Launched on January 8 2012 when George Stephanopoulos (one of former President Bill Clinton’s top political operatives) asked Mitt Romney his contraception question.

How is it that you left out Harry Reid’s whopper from July that a Bain official told him “Mitt Romney didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years?” Reid, of course, refused to identify the Bain official, most likely because even that part of it was a lie.

Reid made that statement on the floor of the United States Senate, and aggressively brought it up at least 4 times over the course of just a few days.

His blatantly false claim was obviously a coordinated effort with the Obama campaign, in no small part having obviously been prompted by an Obama campaign ad cut earlier in July (July 17th), in which it was indeed suggested that Romney may not have paid any taxes for some, and possibly for several years.

Here was one statement from that early ad:

“Makes you wonder if some years he paid any taxes at all. We don’t know because Romney has released just one full year of his tax returns.”

Ordinarily — and considering the Senate source — most of us chalk this sort of stuff up to dirty politics that no one seriously believes for a second. But several networks ran with the story for several days once Reid made the charge, a few of them literally operating as adjunct operations of the Obama Campaign in order to try to pile on and force Romney to release a dozen years of tax returns, when he had agreed to release only 2 years worth.

And within a matter of just a few days after Reid’s charge, the Obama campaign became more directly involved with the issue when Deputy Campaign Director, Stephanie Cutter, tweeted a link to an article in U.S. News, suggesting how Mitt Romney might have not paid any taxes.

I think that “Auto Industry Saved” deserves a prominent place in the list of finalists for LIE OF THE YEAR!!

The truth is that the Auto Industry was STOLEN from its rightful owners, including thousands of individual’s retirement plans, and given to the unions. But the truth is that, even with all of the tax money poured into it, GM is fundamanetally no better off than it was before, and it is rushing toward bankruptcy again…spurred on by foolish wasting of assets on an effort to make the VOLT a viable vehicle even though it is inferior to the electric cars of 100 years ago!!

Certain operatives within CBS News, and in particular within the 60 Minutes staff, producer(s), and broadcast principals (obviously including Steve Kroft), all qualify for having aided and abetted in the perpetration one of the biggest lies of the year 2012 — one that was told by Barack Obama on September 12th in the immediate aftermath of the Benghazi attack.

During the interview with the President, Steve Kroft asked the following question, and President Obama gave the following answer:

. . .
KROFT: Mr. President, this morning you went out of your way to avoid the use of the word terrorism in connection with the Libya Attack, do you believe that this was a terrorism attack?

OBAMA: Well it’s too early to tell exactly how this came about, what group was involved, but obviously it was an attack on Americans. And we are going to be working with the Libyan government to make sure that we bring these folks to justice, one way or the other.
. . . .

That specific portion of the interview was deliberately cut by CBS in their initial airing of the interview, and even during an update aired weeks later. It was only released 2 days before election day — fully 54 days after the interview was held!

Therefore, those operatives within CBS’s 60 Minutes were also guilty of having intentionally continued to cover up that lie at a few critical points during the Presidential Campaign — for example, they withheld that clip following the 2d debate which was “moderated” by Candy Crowley when, as everyone recalls, she blatantly mischaracterized the President’s statements made on the day following the attack, and took his side in a dust-up over whether he cad called it a terror attack in his Rose Garden remarks the day following the attack, a few hours before the Kroft interview.

Obviously, CBS News & 60 Minutes continued to withhold that entirely newsworthy portion of the Kroft interview after the Crowley debate dust-up. One can only conclude that there was an obvious motivation to provide ongoing protection for the candidacy of Barack Obama, and to hide relevant information from the American public.

With only a few days to go in the Presidential campaign, CBS compounded their ongoing mendacity by quietly and with no fanfare on their own part, releasing that previously unknown portion of the Steve Kroft interview with Barack Obama, which interview as we know had been held just hours following the brutal terrorist attack on Benghazi, Libya.

As can be seen from that portion of the interview, Barack Obama responded to Kroft’s question about whether the attack had been a terror attack, by deliberately downplaying the possibility.

We now know, of course, that the President was fully aware at that time that the attack was indeed a terror attack, and that it had included participation by an al-Qaeda affiliate. Moreover, we now also now know that there was at least a possibility that the terrorists who perpetrated that deadly attack may have had access to American supplied weapons that we had funneled to those rebels fighting against Col. Qaddafi during the last days of his brutal regime!

With all of the televised debates between the candidates over, and with little or no chance of any meaningful revival of the Administrations public posture on the Benghazi attack, and with both of the candidates winding down their summary arguments and moving into full speed on their GOTV programs, CBS News knew or should have known that the late-breaking release of that portion of the interview would have little effect on the campaign and would receive minimal coverage.

Had they released that portion of the interview during the original airing of the interview, Obama would have been exposed for attempting to downplay the terror aspect of the attack when that all came out.

One also has to wonder who else at CBS knew about the Kroft question and Obama answer.

For example, did the moderator of the third debate — CBS News’ own Bob Schieffer know? If so, why did he not insist on the release of that portion of the interview prior to the debate which he moderated? Or, was Bob also participating in that CBS cover-up — hiding information that the public was certainly entitled to, and which would have been key background information as a basis for fully responding to the first question he asked during that last debate — about Benghazi?

As we all know, 60 Minutes has a sordid history of improperly attempting to effect the outcome of Presidential elections at key points, and for blatantly partisan political purposes. In 2004, they even aired forged documents in order to try to trash the reelection effort of President Bush. That time they got caught. But this time it looks like they got away with it.
