NYT: Obama admin approved secret weapons deals that ended up arming Islamists in Libya

posted at 11:31 am on December 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Oopsie! In what has to be one of the least-shocking outcomes of Barack Obama’s Libyan adventure, the New York Times reports that his administration secretly gave approval of weapons shipments to Libyan resistance fighters, only to learn that the weapons ended up arming Islamist terror networks.  Who could have seen that coming, right?

The Obama administration secretly gave its blessing to arms shipments to Libyan rebels from Qatar last year, but American officials later grew alarmed as evidence grew that Qatar was turning some of the weapons over to Islamic militants, according to United States officials and foreign diplomats.

No evidence has emerged linking the weapons provided by the Qataris during the uprising against Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi to the attack that killed four Americans at the United States diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, in September.

But in the months before, the Obama administration clearly was worried about the consequences of its hidden hand in helping arm Libyan militants, concerns that have not previously been reported. The weapons and money from Qatar strengthened militant groups in Libya, allowing them to become a destabilizing force since the fall of the Qaddafi government.

Maybe we can offer an alternative headline for this: Reporting that might have been valuable before the election. Tammy Bruce tweeted:

This is yet another indictment of the Obama approach to decapitating regimes.  In the immediate aftermath of the fall of Qaddafi, the administration didn’t hesitate to favorably compare the outcome in Libya to that in Iraq, where hundreds of thousands of American troops were used to secure the gains after the fall of Saddam Hussein.  The NYT provides a post-mortem on that strategy courtesy of a former State Department adviser on the region:

The Qatari assistance to fighters viewed as hostile by the United States demonstrates the Obama administration’s continuing struggles in dealing with the Arab Spring uprisings, as it tries to support popular protest movements while avoiding American military entanglements. Relying on surrogates allows the United States to keep its fingerprints off operations, but also means they may play out in ways that conflict with American interests.

“To do this right, you have to have on-the-ground intelligence and you have to have experience,” said Vali Nasr, a former State Department adviser who is now dean of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, part of Johns Hopkins University. “If you rely on a country that doesn’t have those things, you are really flying blind. When you have an intermediary, you are going to lose control.”

And when you don’t have any way to control what happens on the ground, you can bet that “control” will be the first thing to go.  The US knew that Islamist terrorists operated in eastern Libya for years before Obama came into office.  Al-Qaeda recruited heavily in the region for its fight against the US in Iraq.  Decapitating Qaddafi meant losing pressure on AQ and other Islamist terror networks, and flooding the area with uncontrolled weapons almost guaranteed that the already-organized terror networks would hijack them from other less-organized resistance movements.

But this brings up another important question.  The Obama administration knew that the Islamist terror networks ended up controlling many if not most of these weapons, and had become much more dangerous as a result.  If that’s the case, how could they possibly have left the consulate in Benghazi as unprotected as it was?

Because they are inapt democrats running foreign affairs, intelligence and the military. They don’t know what they are doing and when they get caught they cover it up. The Obama legacy is going to be a failure although sympathetic historians will most likely cover that up also.

Because it was not a consulate. It was a house with a temporary office in it, used to put a fig leaf of diplomatic presence on the CIA operation that our government told the Libyan government did not exist.

ShainS on December 6, 2012 at 11:40 AM

Re: consulate/CIA base…a distinction without a difference, really.

We maintain CIA bases in almost all of our consular facilities. Worldwide, and have since 1949.

This using Benghazi as a base to arm others (inside Libya and even in Syria) went bad from the first shipment from Qatar.

When this Banghazi episode broke, there were a few hints that Obama’s Ambassador, now deceased, had gone there to meet with the a few Turkish government reps (who were funneling weapons into Syria) and several local Libyan groups, some to give more weapons to and some to try to convince to give weapons back…you know…was a simple mistake, can we have our RPG’s and AK47′s back…we want to give them to a few other, rival, groups. You down with that? No. Ooooops.

That’s pretty much how that last 24 hours went down.

ButterflyDragon on December 6, 2012 at 11:58 AM

Before you discuss the article, think of the following. If Obama goes on TV today and declares his full and unquestionable support for Iranian (or, for the point’s sake, North Korean) regime, including transfers of tax money and newest weapon systems to them, will it affect his chances to complete his second and, if he sets his mind to it, third and fourth terms? And what, personally, are you prepared to do if he does?

Now discuss. What are a few puny rockets between Islamist friends, after all?

Exactly, the problem was that somebody decided that the Former Navy Seals in the area didn’t need to know of that aspect of the operation. Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, unaware of the State Department’s secret deal, acted exactly like the former Navy Seals that they were and tried to protect Ambassador Stevens.

Pick a fight with a couple of heavily armed former Navy Seals and all hell is going to break loose, and that is exactly what happened.

Washington Nearsider on December 6, 2012 at 12:22 PM

But this brings up another important question.

But, it also explains why:

1. Chris Stevens was in Benghazi, a well-known hotbed of Islamic terrorist groups, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11;

and,

2. Stevens didn’t return to the more fortified embassy in Tripoli once news of the protest in Cairo was disseminated and State issued a world-wide directive to batten down the hatches;

and,

3. Stevens met with Turkish Consul General Ali Sait Akin an hour before the attack on the “consulate” began;

and,

4. The Libyan-flagged vessel, Al Entisar — which means “The Victory” — was detained in the Turkish port of Iskenderun, 35 miles from the Syrian border, on 6 September 2012…just five days before the attack. Aboard the ship were RPG’s, surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles, shoulder-launched, Russian-designed missiles known as MANPADS, and American-made Stinger missiles. Assad had been shelling some Turkish villages, so why would Turkey release the weapons-laden, detained vessel after a short period of time (time long enough to make a few phone calls)?;

and,

5. A month after the October 2011 death of Qaddafi, Hillary Clinton announced in Tripoli that the US was committing $40 million to help Libya “secure and recover weapons stockpiles”;

and,

6. The CIA had a complex in Benghazi;

and,

7. The CIA and FBI have been so lackadaisical relative to its investigation on the ground in Benghazi. It wouldn’t have looked good for the King for photographs to surface before the election showing, amidst the 100 corpses of dead American and al Qaeda-affiliates, weapons stamped:

“‘Liberation’ Brought To You By Barack Hussein Obama, II, President of the United States of America”

Like the mob has to do at times, Obama had to call in his “Clean Up Men” to remove the evidence, so to speak. :-)

If that’s the case, how could they possibly have left the consulate in Benghazi as unprotected as it was?

No kidding, not to mention the horrible deja vu from the Nairobi embassy bombings where desperate requests for security were denied. GOP Congressmen who saw video of attack at hearings yesterday say they just walked through front door. NOTHING to stop them. But Dem Adam Schiff spreading bull, claiming this assault could have been planned 4 hours before the attack.

Novelist Brad Thor was on Fox last night. He said his editor would have thrown him out the door if he’d written a novel with scenario we’re seeing from BO administration about movie protests etc. The most poignant question he wants answered is why Ambassador Stevens was in Benghazi on 9/11 and not at the Embassy in Tripoli.

Was Eric Holder involved in this arms deal as well…? I see another EP claim coming down the road.

Barack Hussein Obama is arming Islamists…

I know, some dots can’t/shouldn’t be connected, but gee… something tells that me we shouldn’t really be that surprised by some of this… Yes, yes, BHO is a christian… but don’t we have to at least stop once in a while and acknowledge the coincidences?

No evidence has emerged linking the weapons provided by the Qataris during the uprising against Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi to the attack that killed four Americans at the United States diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, in September.

Perhaps not, but I’m guessing the Ambassador who was killed in the attack knew a little too much about it and standing by and doing nothing during the attack was a convenient way for Fascist Pig Obastard to get rid of him.

Disgusting. The whole Benghazi disaster alone would have been enough to boot Obama out, if only the media had covered it and held Obama accountable.

This administration and their sicophant media is all just a bunch of Loathesome Doves!

BTW.
NYT readers are now royally confused.
Because they can’t understand this, they will simply ignore it.

Jabberwock on December 6, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Ed, I love your website, and your writing, but how can you give this credit to the NYT????

Glenn Beck broke this story 3 months ago, and he turned blue in the face trying to get this story out,.

I don not understand why you will not pay attention to him,.. He has many investigative reporters, and inside information.

You HAVE to have known it was Glenn who proclaimed the gun running first,.. why can’t you acknowledge him? Are you too proud? Jealousy?
What is it?

Well, as long as the money isn’t used to fund the Contras, it’s okay.

…Eh, who am I kidding? Whether it’s okay or not depends on whether you have an (R) or a (D) after your name.

AQ/the Zawahiris may very well have wanted to kidnap Stevens a hostage in exchange for the Blind Sheik, but I’m not following the logic that the WH wanted Stevens kidnapped or killed. And yes, I do believe the faux “consulate” in Benghazi was essentially a CIA gun-running operation and Stevens was involved in funneling arms to Syrian “rebels” through Turnkey.

Is the argument for this that he knew too much?

He consulted with the arab league instead of congress and ended up arming al qaeda without any debate. And then he lied to hide this fact. Also, his arab league partners are opposed to having the Benghazi terrorists “brought to justice” and this is why they attempted the closure strategy which included bringing youtube video producer to justice and fake news stories claiming the terrorists had been brought to justice by the Libyan government and a posse of pro-American Libyans who went to al qaeda’s house and gave them a big ass kicking.

Impeach.

The source, who for years has run multiple cargo ships between Libya, Turkey and other countries in the region, questioned why other countries like the U.S. aren’t using those routes as well to help anti-Assad forces.

“We did it before, taking arms into Libya to support the rebels and it worked. I don’t see why we don’t do it now and take the arms to help the Syrians fight Assad,” the source told Fox News.

As a New York Times report ties Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to arms shipments into Libya during the civil war to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi, two separate British sources who have been on the ground for the last four years in Benghazi told Fox News the movement into Syria was very similar to the movement of weapons into Libya. “Weapons and fighters were absolutely going to Syria, and the U.S. absolutely knew all about it — though most shipments have stopped since the attack on the American Consulate,” one said.

Due to obvious security concerns, both the British sources and the Mediterranean shipping owner want to remain anonymous, but have spoken with Fox News on multiple occasions from their locations. Their details mirror those provided to Fox News by an American contractor worried if he goes public, he will never work again. All say that the weapons from Libya have mostly been offloaded at docks in Turkey, but some of the shipments end up off the coast of Lebanon, where they are offloaded at sea. The trail then extends from Turkey and Lebanon across the international borders into Syria to support so-called freedom fighters opposing the Assad regime. Fox News was told there were up to five warehouses being used to store weapons in Benghazi and Misrata.

The U.S. source said: “The U.S. can absolutely say that we did not provide arms to Syria … that is because it is a splitting-hair defense. The interim Libya government in November 2011 offered to allow arms to be passed along to ‘Syrian Freedom Fighters’ and that those weapons could go through Turkey and Lebanon. The distribution then went from there.”
