I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life. This is, without a doubt, the best thing that’s happened to my state in a long, long time.

Same here. Keep an ear out. I hear there are other bills that have been passed during the lame duck that we will find refreshing. Snyder has been very quietly going about the business of attracting business and though he didn’t help Romney out one bit (something that miffed me a bit, being ABO, myself) he just might come through. Detroit might be on its way to being forced into bankruptcy or being dissolved entirely. There’s something on deck about the emergency manager law as well. One thing I know, Snyder has no hidden agenda or ulterior motives; he simply wants Michigan to prosper.

Moved here this past summer. I thought * we*were the only ones moving INTO Michigan. Welcome! It’s really a great place, such a shame the unions have done so much damage. We’ve lived all over the US and some places here, including our town, remind me of the old “Main Street USA”, well, if you can ignore the Obama voters anyway.

Michigan House Passes First Piece Of “Right To Work” Legislation
of Thursday, December 6, 2012, 08:19 p.m

Huge crowds gathered in Lansing today monitor, and some cases protest, a controversial piece of legislation dubbed the “right to work” bill and officially part of House Bill 4054.

#The voting process in the House of Representatives started shortly after 4:30 p.m.; and ended about 4:45 p.m.

News reporters who are covering this out of Lansing announced a 58-52 vote via their Twitter feeds. That bill will now go to the Senate. #David Eggert, a state government reporter for the MLive newspaper network, has explained on his Twitter feed that this is one of three pieces of legislation that are expected; with the others likely to be started today but finished early next week.

#A press statement on behalf of Gov. Rick Snyder, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and Speaker of the House Jase Bolger was posted earlier today on michigan.gov and includes these details:

#Gov. Rick Snyder, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and Speaker of the House Jase Bolger today announced that the Legislature will move forward with legislation to enact freedom-to-work laws.

#Freedom-to-work laws will improve the lives of countless Michigan families by restoring workplace fairness and equality for all workers. In addition, the laws will attract more new jobs and new career opportunities for Michigan workers.

#”We respect the fact that the freedom-to-work issue evokes strong emotions among supporters and opponents,” said Snyder, who supports collective bargaining. “That’s why we’ve focused on other reforms that are so critical to Michigan’s turnaround. The values of freedom, fairness and equality in the workplace should unite us all. Interesting note…the legislators included appropriations in the bills to make them referendum-proof.

Gov. Snyder encouraged the legislators to pass these RTW bills quickly, and has promised to sign, probably early next week. Last year he told the unions RTW wasn’t on his agenda, but he was mightily pi$$ed when the unions responded with a proposal to prevent RTW with a constitutional amendment. Their proposal went down in flames. That was all the encouragement Snyder needed. Mess with the bull…you know the rest.

Because it denies the Dems the chance to run scare ads showing how 911 calls won’t be answered in time and your house will burn down. This is how the OH law got repealed in the referendhum.

The public sector unions left are those like teachers’ unions and the guys at DMV or city hall. Not very popular.

Repubs in the state became emboldened when Prop 2, which would’ve put into the state’s constitution a ban on right to work laws and controlled wages and hours over the state legislature, failed by 16%. They’re thinking about calling this the Bob King Right to Work Law, and as an auto employee I am unable to come up with a better name for it.

I don't think it's a right to work issue, it's a Hudson issue. We won on Hudson against our union years ago. No one is obligated to support political donations that they object to, period, per that case. Hudson and the SCOTUS

Unions can still make it a condition that one has to be part of the union to get hired. You can’t be a UPS driver anywhere without joining the Teamsters. I’m guessing closed shops will remain closed shops.
