Breaking: DeMint retiring from Senate

posted at 10:46 am on December 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), who has led conservatives in the upper chamber for years, will resign his office next month, according to a statement from his office earlier this morning.  DeMint will move across town to the Heritage Foundation and will become its new president:

Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) announced that he will leave the Senate at the beginning of January to become the next president of The Heritage Foundation, the largest and most respected conservative think tank in America.

“It’s been an honor to serve the people of South Carolina in United States Senate for the past eight years, but now it’s time for me to pass the torch to someone else and take on a new role in the fight for America’s future.

“I’m leaving the Senate now, but I’m not leaving the fight. I’ve decided to join The Heritage Foundation at a time when the conservative movement needs strong leadership in the battle of ideas. No organization is better equipped to lead this fight and I believe my experience in public office as well as in the private sector as a business owner will help Heritage become even more effective in the years to come.

“I’m humbled to follow in the footsteps of Ed Feulner, who built the most important conservative institution in the nation. He has been a friend and mentor for years and I am honored to carry on his legacy of fighting for freedom.

“My constituents know that being a Senator was never going to be my career. I came to Congress as a citizen legislator and I’ve always been determined to leave it as citizen legislator. South Carolina has a deep bench of conservative leaders and I know Governor Haley will select a great replacement.

“One of the most rewarding things I’ve done in the Senate is work with the grassroots to help elect a new generation of leaders who have the courage to fight for the principles of freedom that make this country so great. I’m confident these senators will continue the legacy of conservative leaders before them.”

Jim DeMint was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998 after owning a successful advertising and market research company for twenty years. DeMint left the House after limiting himself to three terms and then was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 and re-elected in 2010.

During his time in office, DeMint has been tireless advocate for Americans taxpayers. His goal has been to support and defend the Constitution, which was written to preserve liberty by restraining the federal government. Toward that end, he authored legislation to balance the budget, ban earmarks, replace the tax code, and reform our entitlement programs. He also led the fight against unconstitutional power grabs like the Wall Street bailout and Obamacare.

The Wall Street Journal breaks down the political situation of DeMint’s departure:

Sen. DeMint’s departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint’s replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina.

Mr. DeMint was reelected to a second term in 2010. The 61-year-old senator had announced earlier that he would not seek a third term.

Frankly, I’m disappointed by the move, although this gives Heritage a big boost.  I had hoped to see DeMint act as a conservative leader in the Senate for the next four years, especially with Democrats taking a bigger majority after this past election.  Haley will make a wise appointment, I’m sure, and other Republicans in the chamber will get an opportunity to fill his shoes. However, considering the fights ahead of us, it would have been much better to have DeMint as a stalwart on the inside rather than an activist on the outside.

Regardless, I wish Senator DeMint the best, and thank him for his invaluable service to the conservative cause over the last several years.  I’m glad we’ll see him at Heritage, and look forward to the great work he will do there.

Not sure how this move by Demint means. Some interesting things to consider;

*Heritage foundation is primarily a think tank. Issues related. They are connected to a who’s who of conservative foundations. The koch bros, Joesph Coors, devos, olin, etc.
*Their operating budget is $80 million. They did sponsor a republican debate in 2011.

What I think these could be good for is demint getting more access to money that could be funneled to a conservative like palin or himself for a 2016 run. Romney started running for president in 2008, cornering the dollars etc..

Again, trying to figure out the motive. But at 61 years of age, Demint is still young in the political relm so this move is curious. Their has to be a reason.

We know that over the last 4 years Demint has been at odds with the GOP establishment, he has backed many candidates who have run against the chose ones. Further, the koch bros., are more conservative than establishment. Maybe, Demint will use the hertiage foundation to start a movement away from the establishment.

Also found it interesting that Palin responded to the Demint move within 30 minutes of the announcement. Almost as if she had a heads up.

Mr. Redneck, Jake Knotts, was defeated by a write-in candidate. I was glad to vote for his opponent. Knotts and Nikki Haley hate each other.

I’m not a fan of this decision. He ran to serve six years, and he has decided not to serve the full duration. I understand resigning if you have a scandal, a major change in health or being asked to serve in some office by the President. Sarah Palin was a different case, where her increased national exposure had changed the scope of the office and created a flurry of false ethics complaints.

He’s leaving the Senate, and he does so thinking about what suits him best.

He promised to be a different kind of Senator, but he ends up leaving just like Trent Lott.

amazingmets on December 6, 2012 at 11:51 AM

The timing means that if DeMint wanted this job, he had to quit the Senate. This position wouldn’t have been open by the time he served his entire term.

I don’t think there’s any conspiracy here, or that DeMint is going along with the “Let it Burn” crowd. If he was, he wouldn’t be taking the lead role at Heritage, he would be cashing out as a lobbyist for PHARMA or something…

visions on December 6, 2012 at 11:33 AM

The problem is, for the nation as a whole, who really cares about the president of the Heritage Foundation?

As a Senator, DeMint has influence over the entire population of South Carolina, and has a 1/100 influence in the Senate like any Senator, and Senators increase their influence with seniority. Why give up that kind of power and influence, and the ability to defend conservative ideals in the Senate, for 4 years to be president of a think tank?

DeMint was elected in 2010 to do a job for 6 years. He should do his job.

Demint sees the handwriting on the wall.

The gop is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD.

The good news just keeps on a coming.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/poll-public-trusts-obama-dems-solve-fiscal-cliff-144612703–politics.html

Another national poll is out Thursday that shows Democrats winning the battle of perception on the “fiscal cliff” crisis.

Fifty-three percent of registered voters told Quinnipiac University’s Polling Institute that they believe the president and his party will make a “good-faith effort to cooperate with the Republicans” to avoid the fiscal cliff—the series of automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to go into effect Jan. 1. Thirty-eight percent of respondents disagreed with that statement.

Respondents by a wider margin—53 to 36 percent—said they trusted the president and Democrats more than Republicans to avoid the fiscal cliff.

The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

Quinnipiac’s findings follow a survey released this week by The Washington Post and the Pew Research Center that found Americans were more likely to blame Republicans than Democrats if Congress failed to reach a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

****of course no demographic breakdown necessary because that isn’t the headline that gets shouted out here at YAHOO.

Here is the headline:

Obama, Democrats on top again in latest poll on ‘fiscal cliff’ crisis

I don’t get it. You mean to tell me that we are expected to believe that a Senator thinks he can have more influence over the debate from a Magazine than in the Senate?

To say that is hard to believe is an understatement of epic proportions.

There is something we aren’t seeing, something that makes continuation in the Senate for the next four years impossible. Nobody gives up a seat at the table to take a slot outside the room where the most they can do is shout. Pfui.

The GOP is beyond economical repair.

They’re tainted – and permanently so – but a couple of things.

FIRST – they WERE at the helm when the finiancial crisis occurred. They knew that Fannie and Freddie were the culprits and they did not have the balls to take on the Dims to reform those agencies. So they ARE to blame for the financial crisis. You can also blame the Dims but then again – the Dims were simply true to their nature of Socialism and redistribution of wealth.

Second – The GOP has lied to it’s base for over 50 years. All this talk about “smaller government” – and they never produced it. In fact – when they took FULL control of the government – they gave us the biggest entitlement expansion since LBJ … Medicare Part D – and they brought that to us UNFUNDED.

They are discredited. Join me in laughing them out of business. Personally, I can’t wait to see how Obama stuffs Boehner on this debt deal. Boehner will be resigning in disgrace within a year.

This is such a unique situation where a senator gives up power. I believe it has to be for a greater purpose.

Demint is one of the few in washington who is at odds with the GOP mullahs. He is persona non grada with them.

Could he be building an organization to take on the Bushie/American crossroads of Karl rove. Those people who picked our candidates last cycle and controlled $100 million.

I’m trying to be optimistic about this move. Besides, him, Palin and a few others, I have very few in the GOP I trust as conservatives.

This move comes as a shock. Big question, what is the motive! Please don’t let it be that the GOP establishment beat you down. Let’s hope that he feels he can make more changes to the GOP from this new position.

DeMint says he can do more good for the conservative movement outside of the Senate, using the resources of the Heritage Foundation.

LOL, great minds and all of that!

renalin on December 6, 2012 at 12:01 PM

Sorry to burst your bubble but the GOP hasn’t been nor is it now a the party for conservatives. Conservatives in the early/mid 70′s made an uneasy peace with the Party of DICC’s because they could see the direction the dims were heading. Ask yourself how many times you have been asked to vote for a DICC with the promise they would do better next time. The GOP is really a center left Party that used the center Right conservatives to get and maintain power.

chemman on December 6, 2012 at 12:42 PM

It’s hard not to read between the lines in DeMint’s/Feulner’s comments: no hope for now on the national level, focus on federalism until conservatism can be successfully rebranded/remessaged.

Demint said Harry Reid ISN’T THE PROBLEM.

Demint said Reid is a “friend of mine”.

Jim DeMint was one of the finest Senators we’ve ever had; you never saw him waiver from conservative principles. I’m as shocked as everyone else.

Could it be that he sees no hope, that only dark days are ahead in Obama’s 2nd term?

I could blame the fiscal socialist Bush for accelerating the decline of the GOP, but that won’t make me feel any better.
Look what DeMint’s leaving behind: A republican party that trashed Allen West’s chances for re-election via redistricting; a speaker of the House that cried “I get it”, & went right back to his rino ways; & how painful would it be to see McConnell running against contraceptive progressive Ashley Judd?

Hopefully it means you’re waking up and will now pause and think when people say there are no differences between the two parties.

Dante on December 6, 2012 at 12:52 PM

This may not have happened if Americans had not re-elected a jackass.
I think it is clear to DeMint that conservatives are losing the battle of ideas, and he will have more influence marketing conservatism at Heritage than he would if he waited out 5 more years, drawing a paycheck for being a very junior voice in an incredibly dysfunctional Senate.

I think DeMint has learned that The US Senate doesn’t recognize nor care to implement good ideas, which is by its very nature anti-conservative.

I was always proud to have DeMint as my Rep in Congress. Now that I’m in GA, I really doubt that Nikki will point a conservative strong enough to give our other 3 local (R) Senators (GA/SC) any additional backbone.

For what it’s worth, DeMint was in the same Freshman class in the Senate as one Barack Obama. DeMint had realworld experience in the field of health care reform, but Obama was never interested in discussing it with DeMint before he made health care a campaign issue.
