Obama: Republicans’ revenue math doesn’t work, except for when it did

posted at 2:41 pm on December 5, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Remember — uhm, I think it was — yesterday, when President Obama said that the GOP’s cliff counteroffer proposing $800 billion in new revenue without raising taxes was untenable, because the math just doesn’t work?

Oh, and then there was the time — also yesterday — that White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that “it’s not a plan to say that we’re going to magically increase revenues through loophole closures and deduction caps,” à la magic beans and fairy dust?

Yes, about that.

Once upon a time (that time being July 2011), Democrats actually thought that the math of raising that much revenue through closing loopholes, capping deductions, and eliminating credits, without hiking tax rates, could work. In fact, forget $800 billion; President Obama claimed he could wring $1.2 trillion out of such a plan. So, Republicans are essentially repeating one of the president’s plans back at him, and now it’s somehow the most far-fetched idea on the planet — who knew that the accuracy of simple math depended so heavily on political calculation?

What we’ve said was give us $1.2 trillion in additional revenues, which could be accomplished without hiking tax rates, but could simply be accomplished by eliminating loopholes, eliminating some deductions, and engaging in a tax reform process that could have lowered rates generally while broadening the base.

Oh, the tangled webs we weave, when first we practice to deceive! It is so painfully, glaringly obvious that there is absolutely no real policy rationale for Democrats insistence on hiking tax rates on the wealthy, especially since doing so will amount to pretty much nothing in covering the additional spending President Obama wants to do. But hey, given their newfound interest in math — sure, let’s talk math.

Both the White House and House Republicans are pretending that their goal is “reducing the deficit,” which they suggest means making real spending choices. They are talking about a “$4 trillion plan,” or something, regardless of how that number is reached.

Here’s the reality: Those numbers have no real meaning because they are conjured in the wilderness of mirrors that is the federal budget process. Since 1974, Capitol Hill’s “baseline” has automatically increased spending every year according to Congressional Budget Office projections, which means before anyone has submitted a budget or cast a single vote. Tax and spending changes are then measured off that inflated baseline, not in absolute terms.

The most absurd current example is Mr. Obama’s claim that his “$4 trillion” plan reduces the deficit by about $800 billion over 10 years by ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But those “savings,” as he calls them, are measured against a White House budget office spending baseline that is fictional. Those wars are already being unwound and everyone knows the money will never be spent. But they are called “savings” to gull the public and make the deficit reduction add up to a large-sounding $4 trillion.

So, why hasn’t Congress and the rat-eared wonder already closed those “loopholes?” It would seem that if there really are ways to cheat the system that it should be corrected without benefit of talks about the debt ceiling and fiscal cliff.

Happy Nomad on December 5, 2012 at 2:45 PM

None of this matters until the Republicans wrestle the microphone away from the Democrats. To do that, they have to have a unified message that they repeat ad nasuem like talking-robots on every talk show, news conference and interview they encounter until they can break through the MSM iron curtain.

That, of course, will never happen because half the party is Democrat-lite and the other half are squishes.

Apparently, the Obama administration believes it needs to keep things simple for the poor dears in the press.

What, no printout of the tweets scrolling across the official White House website? Sheesh! Ah, the high-tech White House, what with its week old paper printouts of blog posts. Did Carney crank them out on the mimeograph machine? Why didn’t he set up a projector and some transparencies while he was at it? Oh, that’s right. Transparency is now a bad word. Paper, it is!

The Democrats do not care about all that.

All they want is an increased tax on the rich. That is it.

They do not care if it helps ( or hurts ) the economy.
They do not care what Obama said in the past.
The do not care about America.

They want to tax the rich to make the not rich feel better.

THIS MAN IS A COMPLETE, INEPT, FISCALLY CHALLENGED, SOCIALIST ECONOMICS-DRIVEN IMBECILE! Anyone who believes the solution to our fiscal problems is 1) another $50 Billion more in Stimulus spending, 2) eliminating the debt ceiling, 3) totally rejecting ALL spending cuts, & 3) raising taxes in order to raise $1.6 Trillion in new revenue over a TEN YEAR period….WHILE HE IS ADDING $1.2 TRILLION IN NEW DEBT EVERY YEAR….should be immediately ejected from national public government service IMMEDIATEL…

On the other hand, analysing Obama’s moronic mathmatical plan definitely explains why Obama has sealed all of his school/college records! I think reading Saul Alinsky, being mentored by Frank Marshall Davis & Jeremiah Wright, & doing all those drugs in college really did kill a lot of Obama’s brain cells!

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

“The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage ”

It’s a real shame that Barky’s SAT or LSAT scores never saw the light of day. One glance at the idiot’s 420 SAT math score (if he was having a very good day) would have been enough to rid the nation of this retard long, long ago. Barky’s English isn’t too much better. Clearly, he didn’t break 920 on his SATs and I’m sure his LSATs were even more pathetic.

Alas, even with the very public evidence of his mind-numbing stupidity (“profit AND earnings ratios” – a nonsenical term that even an 8th grader would NEVER utter) we still had to put up with idiots like Krauthammer claiming that Barky was intelligent. LOL. Barky is a stone cold idiot. And the cowardice of so many on the right to point out what an utter fool he is has allowed the left to continue on with their claim that the Indonesian has a brain – which he obviously does not.

There has never been a dumber person in the White House. NEVER. Not even in the same universe as this retard. I keep hoping that someone will finally ask him, “What’s 3/8 – 4/10?” so it can be clear how incredibly stupid he is. Even when he admitted that he couldn’t do any math past the 7th grade level (which everyone should know by now) people on the right let that slip by.

I have said since the very, very beginning that it is dangerous not to tag this imbecile as the imbecile that he truly is. People who have claimed he has any intelligence, at all, have done a great disservice to America and civilized society, in general.

Obama keeps saying ‘I want to cut the deficit, reduce spending, end poverty, lower unemployment, blah, blah, blah….’…INTELLIGENT people would simply respond by asking 1 question: WHY DIDN’T YOU DO THAT IN YOUR 1ST 4 YEARS? His BS is nothing more than Liberal Lip Service.

I saw the video a while ago of the Detroit Council Woman who declared Detroit overwhelmingly voted for Obama (70%) so it is time Obama delivered ‘the bacon’ – we voted you back in & now you owe us a ‘bailout’! She has proven; however, she is too d@mn ignorant to figure out that Obama is not working for HER / DETROIT! Blacks overwhelmingly voted for Obama in 2008…and they are in WORSE SHAPE NOW than they were in 2008! Under Obama, Black Unemployment rose to 14+% – it is STILL above 12%! I remember the videos of the blacks declaring Obama was going to buy them a new kitchen, a new car, their gas for their car, etc…and he failed to deliver. ‘INSANITY’ is doing the same thing over & over while expecting a different outcome each time…which is exactly what they did again in 2012!

President Johnson, recognizing the importance of ‘catering’ to the new black voting bloc, was quoted as saying Democrats (those who founded/started the KKK & initially/primarily opposed the Civil Rights movement) ‘MUST’ give them (Blacks) something to appease them BUT ‘not enough to really matter’! Democrats have sold Blacks the LIE that the Democratic Party is the party that truly supports & works / cares for Blacks. I would ask Blacks to compare their situation /lives now to what it was not long after Johnson. Is it that much better? The answer is NO! Why? Because, like then, Democrats – vene with a Black President at the helm, gives them something but not enough to truly make a difference!

AND IT IS HER MENTALITY OF VOTING FOR SOMEONE BASED ON THE PROMISE OF GETTING MONEY/STUFF THAT IS DESTROYING THIS COUNTRY. “TO H@LL WITH THE COUNTRY AS LONG AS I / DETROIT GETS MY / OUR FREE $$/STUFF!” Good luck with that!…Will the last American out after the collapse please bring the flag…?!

The poster is a guy named Cedarford who tends to have some pretty antiJewish attitudes which do not affect this quote. He did not source or link this quote, but I found it interesting. He also left out some obvious reasons that Clinton’s record reads like that.

Under LBJ revenue grew by 25%, but spending grew by 24%.
· Under Nixon revenue grew by 17%, but spending grew by 21%.
· Under Ford revenue grew by 11%, but spending grew by 22%.
· Under Carter revenue grew by 20%, but spending grew by 13%.
· Under Reagan revenue grew by 15%, but spending grew by 25%.
· Under Bush Sr. revenue grew by 17%, but spending grew by 18%.
· Under Clinton revenue grew by 35%, but spending grew by 9%.
· Under Bush Jr. revenue grew by 10%, but spending grew by 25%

Obama doesn’t care. This is war — not against the Taliban, but war against the GOP. He has Republicans on the ropes, and that’s a victory he savors and desires — unlike Afghanistan, where he seems only to want to turn tail.

The truth is, every way you look at it, the GOP is trapped. Republican politicians will cave and give the president most of what he wants. The only real question is when. The answer is: Probably at the worst possible time, when they’ve done even more damage to the party’s “brand.”

Here’s some small comfort for Republican politicians trapped in this Hell: On Nov. 6, the American people chose this box.

A point of order, if I may …

There is a false to fact meme being propagated which anyone claiming the ability to “do math” regardless of political stripe should DENOUNCE:

The Republican Congressional leaders are trying to prevent a fiscal conflagration and have made good faith proposals to prevent it.

Horsepucky!

The SCOAMF and his Democratic ilk are proposing to douse the defecit ridden fiscal future of the United States with kerosene (no spending cuts ever!) and then light a propane torch to throw on it (raising taxes, Obamacare, more token stimulus). Yes, that will make a he11 of a good blaze!

While the Congressional Republicans are in favor of slightly cutting back on the amount of defecit tinder being ADDED to the fire (spending cuts which shrink the rate of growth of the defecit ever so slightly over 10 years) and waiting for a natural occurring spark (China’s South Sea ambitions, Israel attacking Iran, the EU/euro collapse)to burn the U.S. economy to the ground.

There is no significant difference between the two parties – they BOTH plan to LET.IT.BURN!

“http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/federal_budget_detail_fy12bs12012n#usgs302″

FY 2012 Spending = 3,728,700,000,000

Revenue = 2,627,500,000,000

Deficit 2012 = 1,101,200,000,000

Gross Public Debt =16,654,300,000,000

Defense = 25%

Social Security = 22%

Medicare/Medicaid = 23%

Welfare = 12%
-100%

Everything else = 18%

18% of the 2012 Federal Spending is 671 billion dollars.

If you cut everything else the government spent money on in 2012 except for Defense, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and Welfare you only cut

671 Billion Dollars out of

3.7 Trillion Dollars

And Congress and the White House are arguing over 800 Billion Dollars.

Cute, but not that relevant. Let’s see the figures wrt to Congress, which after all is where the spending problem originates.

Kind of related. I swiped this from comments on the Althouse thread on Freedom works and Dick Armey’s resignati0n.

While Dems can be blamed for most entitlement programs, aside from Bushs unfunded pork to Big Pharma as free drugs for seniors entitlement…..the chart shows how bad Voodoo supply side economics ..that the Tea Party still believes in …actually is on the red ink.

Obama looks to break the trend, but historically, it appears that Republicans are more fiscally reckless than Democrats on the Federal level.

This all lies by omission. The lying may be unintentional, but it’s just as inaccurate. Many have already commented on the fact that the above completely ignores the impact of Congress, as if the president determines the economy all by himself. It’s bad enough that most of the country seems to believe this. Let’s at least not feed that false impression.

But it also ignores the lingering impact of policies. For instance, LBJ looks almost reasonable, but most of our current economic problems are coming from his Great Society spending that obligated us to entitlement spending we are stuck with to this day. It is absolutely offensive to honesty to compare spending to revenue just for the years he was actually in office, when he has forced so much spending for at least a generation.

Reagan faced a huge economic crisis and military shortfalls. He had to cut taxes and throttle inflation to get the economy moving. He had to ramp up military spending in order to make the nation strong and win the Cold War. Plus, the Democratic Congress refused to cut spending as they had promised to do.

In the early 1990s, everyone was talking about the “Peace Dividend,” by which they meant the fact that having won the Cold War we could scale back a lot of military spending. All credit for that goes to Ronald Reagan and, secondarily, George Bush for holding firm to his foreign policy. So this listing once again misrepresents Reagan.

On top of this, Reagan knew that he could not cut deficits, cut taxes, and spend more on the military all at once. So he focused on the two most important goals, fixing the economy and building up the military. When asked how he would fix the deficits, he said, “We’ll grow our way out of them.” And so we did.

Clinton inherited the growing economy that Reagan and Bush created, and the “Peace Dividend,” and the Dot Com Boom. We should not confuse his ability to take credit for the accomplishments of others with actual accomplishments.

W spent too much, and can be rightfully criticized for that. But the last year of his administration with a Republican Congress saw a deficit of just $161 billion. The really big spending started when the Democrats took over both houses of Congress. That first year they fought with Bush, but managed to jack up the spending considerably. But the next year they refused to pass a budget at all to keep Bush from having any influence on the budget by threatening a veto. So it’s hardly fair to blame W for the reckless spending by a Democratic Congress that refused to even submit a budget that he could veto or negotiate on.

This list is just way too over-simplified to mean anything.

…it’s all a joke!….right?

What we’ve said was… give us $1.2 trillion… in additional revenues,uh which could be accomplished without… hiking taxes, uh … tax rates, but could simply be accomplished by… eliminating loopholes, eliminating some deductions, aaaand… engaging in a tax reform process that could have lowered rates generally… while broadening the base.
