Gergen: Democrats would rather humiliate GOP than solve fiscal cliff

Via Eliana Johnson at NRO, David Gergen comes to the same conclusion that most of us did after the election — that Barack Obama and the Democrats aren’t really interested in solving the massive number of problems in the fiscal cliff coming in less than four weeks.  Their priority is to inflict as much damage on House Republicans as possible, and if that inflicts damage on America, well, you gotta break a few eggs to make omelettes, too.

But since this election, there’s been — I think it’s the Democrats are the ones who are really trying to rub it in and almost humiliate the Republicans, and that’s not going to get to a bargain.  Again, I think it has to be win-win. … You hear among some Democrats right now, and it’s disturbing, that maybe we ought to just take it over the cliff, that’ll, we’ll score political points against the Republicans, that will force their hands in the new year.  That is a very, very, dangerous risk.

Is it?  Only if the media reports on it.  So far, though, the media seems more focused on Republicans and their supposed intransigence, even though John Boehner’s opening offer put the supposed “grand bargain” of August 2011 back on the table — and Obama demanded twice as much revenue with half the cuts in some gauzy point in the future.  At least for now, the media is making brinksmanship a relatively risk-free strategy while Obama campaigns rather than negotiates in good faith.

The real issue is that We are winning! The GOP hads all of the money and the moochers on the Left want it. Everyday that b=goes by we consolodate our power with companies becoming less and less unionized and more businesses moving to States like Texas to do business. At some point they will collapse by the weight of their nothingness.

You put a lot of weight on a very small minority of successful young people. Overall, employment prospects for the younger generation is not very optimistic. Do you see a generation of part time workers as I do or do you see something different? By the way, great moniker for the real cool young dude you think you are but what you or rich young people think of me matters not. Progressives or not, if the government wants tribute from them, the government will get what it wants. Because they are progressives only means they will bend over much more readily because for some reason it feels good to them.

In order to maintain their presence in Silicon Valley, they play Democrat politics. But increasingly their operations in the US are in Red states. Apple’s biggest US office is in Texas. I used to work there.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath, accept reality and say goodbye to the Bush era tax cuts. The Democrats will go over the cliff and the Republicans will not restore the tax cuts without also restoring the cuts for those above $250k. In addition, the deficit and debt will continue to soar because Obama will not use any of the increased revenue for debt relief. I’ll give this country a life of about 5 years plus or minus two years.

The House will not go over the cliff for the top 2 percent, half of whom vote reliably Democratic anyway.

The question is whether they’ll get anything in return.

The longer this lingers – including the debt ceiling fight ahead – the better for the GOP, because the economy is contracting further each day.

2013 is going to be deservedly ugly.

I personally don’t care what the House does – including giving this petulant child his damned tax increases – so long as the Dems and Obama OWN the resultant consequences with the MSM and the general public.

In order for people to be capable of self-rule, there’s a few things which need to happen… Citizens must be educated, understanding the issues as well as the philosophies behind them. They must be responsible in the execution of their civic duties as well as in maintaining order in their personal lives. And they be moral, sharing a relatively common sense of right and wrong.

For decades now, so-called “liberals” have undermined everything that makes us capable of self-rule. They’ve indoctrinated our children, not only in the schoolhouse but through the culture, so that now we have generations of people who no longer have the capacity to govern themselves.

Of course, this means that our founding philosophy really has died. I would have thought never to see Reagan’s warning come true in my lifetime… but it has. He was right.

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

We’ve lost the country. It no longer stands for anything. Citizens are no longer free, they are merely allowed the illusion of freedom, as each of us is subject to government control right down to the very inner workings of our bodies. The most troubling aspect of this past election, at least for me, was the death of my faith in my fellow citizen. While one can sense the truth and the urgency in Reagan’s admonition above, I just never truly believed it could happen… that Americans could forget who they are. But they did, and all it took was a few decades of controlling our schools and television sets.

I don’t know if it will make you feel any better or not, but people who don’t have the capacity for self-rule simply don’t deserve it. If we’re dealing with a population that is essentially ignorant, irresponsible, and immoral it’s just not even a possibility. Weirdly, that made me feel a little better, a little less ripped-off somehow. Being a person who is grounded in reality, it’s easier to turn loose of an impossible hope. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not incredibly sad or that we don’t continue to strive for better.

Going forward, the obvious thing to do would be to get back to basics and rectify the above situation. We need to educate our citizens, encourage civic responsibility and moral behavior. We need to root the progressives out of our schools and homes. To do that, we must work at the state and local level. Step one would be to destroy the public unions who control our schools. Step two would be to put pressure on media outlets controlling the culture. Imagine what a blow it would be if cable and satellite companies sold channels ala carte. Kind of hard to shovel the filth into people’s homes if they have to sit down and think about what’s coming in, huh?

Bottom line is that it’s going to take a good ground game in the States to turn this thing around. We’re back to square one in terms of Liberty. And while it’s do-able.. it’s going to be a heck of a challenge.

The Democrats math on this wrong, they’re basically waving in a kamikaze mission.

I don’t doubt Republicans will get dinged up a bit, but Democrats will too, and they have a lot more to lose.

I see House Republicans get blasted by the MSM for about a week, similar to the payroll tax extension snafu, but the Obama and Senate Democrats own this economy moving forward, and people are going to be pissed if Obama’s reelection means a big middle class tax increase.

House Republicans are also so gerrymandered for the coming decade that it’s going to be nearly impossible to take it back. If it was going to happen, it would have happened in the 2012 election.

I honestly hope a deal doesn’t come, Obama is slitting his own throat here.

Completely untrue. Just because they make smart business decisions to farm out part of their operations to no state tax, citizen hating Texas doesn’t mean that they aren’t completely dependent on the hard working imaginative people who want to be part of Silicon Valley. Berkley? They are from Stanford, Berkley is for the non profiters. Also, if you think that anyone would want to live in Irving or San Antonio over The Bay area…well you need to get on a plane.

Let’s see if I understand this libtard garbage correctly:
These successful people (add Warren Buffet to the mix) are mostly progressives – which means they should like unions and want to redistribute wealth and pay lots more in taxes and are against outsourcing and offshoring – but yet they set up their own businesses to take advantage of low tax and non-union states and low pay / low tax countries – so they can make more money for themselves without paying out as much.
I call that a hypocrit – or someone who has already made their money and don’t want any competition.

Texas has no income tax – so they hate their people?
So of course because California is increasing taxes, they must love their people?
And nobody would want to live in TX when they could live in CA – but people and companies are leaving CA in droves, and the population of TX (people and companies) is climbing.
How can this be? Please explain.

I’m curious – are you completely blind to the hypocrisy of the people you idolize? The progressive Dems demonized Romney and other Republicans over outsourcing, offshoring, tax rates for the wealthy, unions, and company closures/layoffs. And yet the companies you mention, and you can add GE and several others to this, that are run by progressives and support the Dem policies are the biggest offenders when it comes to not paying their taxes, shutting down US operations, and offshoring operations and jobs.
Progressives like Warren Buffet have already made their money by playing them tax avoidance game, and now favors taxing other people more – in ways that will not directly affect himself.
Can you really not see this?

It drives me crazy when people act like Obama and his admin are simply incompetent, that they are doing things that will ‘accidentally’ harm the nation. BULL SH*T, they are highly competent at what they fully INTEND to do, and someone other than Glenn Beck needs to call them on it. As others have said, it is their intent to destroy the middle class, to bring this country to its knees so they can become the US version of the Politburo.
The American people, thanks to the corrupt… no strike that, they aren’t corrupt, they are EVIL. It was thanks to the evil media, academia, and entertainment industry that the majority of the American electorate cares more about SEX than anything else, including their own freedom. They have traded their financial stability, and all other freedoms for some non-existant freedom of consequence free sex. Never mind that it doesn’t exist. But free birth control, abortion, SSM, sex with anyone, anytime, anywhere…sex sex sex….That is what the Democrats ran on and WON. If not for all the sluts, ie, single young women and the worthless young men who don’t want to have to take responsibility for screwing around with them, Obama wouldn’t have won. It’s why we didn’t win the Senate… Even though no one on the GOP side was going to take away their birth control, ability to sodomize any consenting adult, etc… We just don’t want to subsidize it or be forced to celebrate it! The Democrats just don’t understand why all these people are worried over budgets and deficits. In the perfect socialist world, leaders don’t have to worry about such trivia. The government prints the money whatever amount of money it needs and takes away wealth from the people it does not like. You don’t need a budget to do that. The Republicans are wasting everybody’s time.

The most likely outcome is a ramp-up of the Capital-strike that was seen in ’37-38, and that has kept the current economy mired in the doldrums.

The response to going over the cliff by Republicans should be clear – an intense and overwhelming ad campaign in swing states where Republicans show the multiple videos and statements by Democratic congressmen stating that they are prepared and would rather go over the fiscal cliff, that it would be better in the end. Why leave ads for the few months leading up to the election. Buy now, convince now. Set it in people’s minds now why we went over the cliff. Do not wait. Get a grip Republicans, and joint the friggin’ future with onslaught 24/7 saturation. The MSM won’t tell your tale. Win by striking first.

You people better get used to this. The Democrats don’t care because they know their message will be the one that is carried by all the networks. They have the media in their back pockets so they can do whatever they want. That is why it’s so important for the GOP to wage war on the press.

To do this, we have to have real leadership and Boehner and McConnell are not it. They need to get into meetings, get their messaging down pat, wage war on the press and not give in to the Democrats one bit.

Boehner doesn’t understand what it means to be Speaker of the House. He has a lot of power which he is willing to sacrifice to look good to someone, I’m not sure who. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is right now to have a leader in his position. He’s not it and he’s going to be steamrolled by the democrats and this President.
