Another Hollywood star in the Senate?

posted at 1:51 pm on December 4, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Well, why not?  George Miller did it in California in 1964.  Al Franken did it in Minnesota four years ago … we’re pretty sure, anyway.  Ashley Judd may become the next Hollywood star to try to gain a seat in the star-studded US Senate, according to Politico, perhaps as early as 2014:

The Hollywood movie star and eighth-generation Kentuckian is seriously exploring a 2014 run for the Senate to take on the powerful Republican leader, four people familiar with the matter tell POLITICO. In recent weeks, Judd has spoken with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) about the possibility of a run, has discussed a potential bid with a Democratic pollster and has begun to conduct opposition research on herself to see where she’s most vulnerable in the Bluegrass State, sources say.

Whether Judd jumps into the race remains far from certain. She’s reportedly also weighing whether to wait until 2016 to instead take on freshman Sen. Rand Paul, sources say.

But if Judd does become a candidate, she would be the biggest celebrity to run for the Senate since Al Franken’s successful 2008 bid for the Minnesota seat. And her entrance would add a level of star power to a race that was already poised to be the highest-profile in the country with the Senate Republican leader up for a sixth term in 2014.

“She is doing all the things that a serious candidate exploring a race should do,” Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) told POLITICO after speaking with her. “I think there are a lot of people, and I was one of them, who wanted to let her know that her candidacy would be an exciting prospect for us. That’s what I wanted her to know. A lot of the labor unions, they were telling me that too.”

Judd comes from a well-known and well-loved family of entertainers in Kentucky, and it never pays to underestimate star power.  However, it goes without saying that Kentucky isn’t California or Minnesota, politically or culturally.  Four weeks ago, Mitt Romney beat Barack Obama by 28 points and almost 400,000 votes without being a native of Kentucky.  Romney carried all but four counties, and in three of those four Obama won, he didn’t get to a majority.

Judd will need to decide whether to aim at Mitch McConnell or Rand Paul, but neither looks particularly enticing.  McConnell held his seat in the Democratic wave election of 2008 as Obama sailed to the presidency, beating a well-known Democratic politician by six points.  Rand Paul beat the sitting and popular Attorney General Jack Conway by twelve points, 56/44, in his first political campaign in 2010.  McConnell will get plenty of establishment help, and Paul has a national legion of his father’s supporters still to tap.

Maybe Judd should think about running in California.  She could hardly be worse than Barbara Boxer.

People like Judd are surrounded by Yes men and echo chambers. She doesn’t realize that there is a whole population of little people in Kentucy and Tennessee that don’t agree with her views. In her myopic world, she is reasonable and speaks for a southerner state. And Dems think another dim starlet with star power will overcome all of her leftist views, because largely they think fly over states are stupid..

The last Democrat who won a Senate election in Kentucky was Wendell Ford in 1992, and that was with Bill Clinton and Al Gore on the ballot.

Ashley Judd is not from a well known Kentucky family. She, her mother and her sister reside in Williamson County, Tennessee, south of Nashville, the most Republican county in the state. Coburn wants decisions by judge rather than VA for impaired troops
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/dec/3/change-on-veterans-gun-rights-lights-fire/?page=all#pagebreak

Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, wants veterans who have been deemed “mentally incompetent” to have their cases adjudicated by a judge — rather than the Department of Veterans Affairs, as happens currently — and argued that veterans who simply cannot support themselves financially are needlessly given the label and, as such, cannot buy or possess firearms.

Yeah sure, Democrats support your right of self-defense, sure they do.

She’s a nutter. She has no idea how much damage those wolves do to livestock, other wildlife, and people.

Phatbastage on December 4, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Some reality to counter your assumptions:

(01.) She has and continues to engage in A PROFESSION, by her own choice, that is contingent upon “her looks”;

(02.) Since “her looks” are how and what she has and continues to use (rely upon) to be, or effort to be, socially and professionally significant, then:

A. “her looks” are an aspect of who she is and who she represents as being.

THEREFORE,

(03.) “her looks” are an aspect that defines who she presents as and are an aspect about which she herself has offered up as debatable.

THAT MEANS criticising her based upon “her looks” is reasonable, logical, realistic and certainly appropriate.

ADDING TO THAT:

As to “issues” she is defined by, she has presented herself as a visual-aid or visual attraction primarily through a visual-attraction industry through which she has acquired a public reputation, while that is not the case as to what “issues” she is now presuming to qualify by for the US Senate.

Morsi flees palace. See Drudge.

Arab Spring, heh, Obama, you turd.

Schadenfreude on December 4, 2012 at 2:42 PM

She’s just another commie useful idiot who believes the ends justify the means. The Constitution means nothing to idiots like her.

never knew she’s a Conehead…

affenhauer on December 4, 2012 at 2:42 PM

So what exactly is her skill set? Engineering, Economics, Law, Medical, Business?

reddevil on December 4, 2012 at 2:01 PM

She majored in French and minored in anthropology, art history, theater and wymynzes studies at the University of Kentucky. She’s also lived in Tennessee since 1993.

Trafalgar on December 4, 2012 at 2:33 PM

And yet, after making her professional life headway in a visual-industry by way of her visual-industry, she condemns criticism based upon her visual-industry.

Meaning: all that education in “anthropology” and “wymynzes studies” was lost on her. Maybe she was too busy engagining in “visual industry” (“theater”) to do much studying.

Good point. Let’s see her first run successfully for SAG president and then governor of California, before taking a shortcut to DC. G’head.

Christien on December 4, 2012 at 2:46 PM

Attacks on her looks are below each of you.

Phatbastage on December 4, 2012 at 2:09 PM

But all those iconographic images sold to the hapless-gullible depicting Obama as ‘glorious leader’ and ‘phenomenon’ were, uhh, just, you know, happenstance goings-on? Promoted by way of iconography but his “looks” were, uhh, just, you know, not anything anyone noticed or exploited for political gain?

If Hillary and Obama don’t save him, Morsi very well may get Qaddafied, replete with dagger action up his chute.

…treatment has made her puffy and bloated looking. She was quite upset about all the press on her looks and wrote a piece on it.

Frank Enstine on December 4, 2012 at 2:18 PM

NOTICE that what “piece” she “wrote” WAS IN REGARDS HER VISUAL EFFECTS and others’ remarks about them.

“You stepped on my foot! How dare you engage in negativity about my foot!”

“But you put your foot out in front of me when I walked by. I don’t know your feet, I could not care less about them but if you don’t want them stepped on, don’t present them in front of people.”

Lourdes on December 4, 2012 at 2:50 PM

Go read the stuff about her on Ace. She’s nuttier than a bag full of squirrels turds and packs the same intellectual heft.

Did she “write a piece” about, say, our economy, the federal reserve, the Bill of Rights or any issue OTHER THAN something mulling about her “looks”?

Is he now in a pyramid now since he is the ‘new pharaoh’ for protection?
