Video: Bob Costas on gun control … in the middle of an NFL game
posted at 8:01 am on December 3, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
If you were watching what turned out to be an unexpectedly good and well-played game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys last night, then you’ve already seen this strange interlude from Bob Costas last night, in which he used 90 seconds of halftime analysis to pontificate on the need to make handguns illegal. Nothing Costas says in this clip is new or even terribly interesting — Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher used a gun to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and himself, so no one should own guns — but the context of his anti-Second Amendment rant was incredibly bizarre, and not just because it came in the middle of a halftime show with “God Bless America” playing in the background:
Why bizarre? Well, if you watched NBC’s Football Night in America last night, you’d already know that the broadcast team could barely even mention the fact that Belcher committed murder. Before and during the game, they used phrases like “lost her life in this tragedy” to describe what happened to his victim and other non-judgmental phrases. Into that context comes Costas to blame … the gun. It was surreal, an experience only interrupted in the post-game show when Rodney Harrison appeared to get a little angry and remind everyone that Belcher killed someone else besides himself. And while I didn’t watch the earlier games during the day, NBC’s crew was not really an exception in how they approached the Belcher murder-suicide story.
Kudos to the Chiefs, however, who dedicated their game yesterday not to Belcher or gun control, but to the victims of domestic violence. That honored the true victim, and highlighted the true social ill.

- He could have prayed for the baby girl who is now without parents, and perhaps pointed people toward a college fund NBC was setting up and to which Costas was donating (they are not, to my knowledge).
- He could have asked the team why they had not intervened in the life of this young man with alcohol, pain reliever, and concussion issues.
- He could have prayed for, and expressed condolences for, the families who just lost children, brothers, and sisters, and who are grieving over their loss and this tragedy.
Instead he ranted about the need for gun control. This is a tragedy.

People should begin turning off these networks in mass. A massive massive boycott of not just sponsors.. the very networks themselves.
Don’t tell me boycotts don’t work, They do. The work exceptionally well every time they are tried effectively. The government believes in boycotts. They threaten them all the time. States doesn’t go along with something.. they threaten to withhold school lunch money or road money or some other money.
When Gov. Perry threatened to arrest TSA or whatever he threatened earlier this year…. Obama said.. go ahead… no airline will land planes in your state. That’s a boycott.
If you read history and take a look at pre-code Hollywood. Films ware as trashing then as they are today. But when the Catholic church, and other churches followed… when their congregations actually signed pledges to stop going to movies Hollywood caved and cleaned up their acts.
It’s a myth that boycotts don’t work. But real ones take effort. Honestly… the media gets away with this garbage because we let them.

We are told by those on the left we are paranoid about gun control. (Until after the election.) And as soon as they gain a slight upper hand the same people ask why we need guns in the first place.
Any real attempt to disarm legal owners of guns in America will be taking things to the next level. You can call me anything you want, but once they take your guns The Constitution and Bill of Rights isn’t worth the parchment they’re printed on.
PS
Those who value their gun rights but concede “sane” gun laws, just know my comment above is what they most fear and why they know they need to do it incrementally.
Fight every attempt from here on.

Tell that to Chris Benoit’s family.

NBC never features any gun play in its shows, right Bob?
If guns were outright banned and somehow confiscated, NBC would still glorify gun violence in its programs seven days a week.

Because no one ever did a murder-suicide by sitting inside a closed garage with the engine running.

When he is done I come back and watch the game or financial channel I was watching before. Everyone should do this. Just start boycotting these charlatans.

As a former die-hard Cowboys fan (prior to the Jerry Jones era) I watched the game last evening. I primarily hung in until the half time show to catch up on the days scores that I missed. I agree the game was better than some of late.
In any event – the entire halftime show – was dedicated to pontificating in general and wee Bob Costas lecturing me about gun control! I got so mad I switched to a re-run of the movie, Heidi.
What a crock of sanctimonious ca-ca!! Somebody try to convince me that when that little career bat boy goes out in public that he doesn’t have ARMED guards to protect his safety…..
A pox on him – his house – and his ilk…. especially his ilk.
They never did mention one score – nor one murder….

Don’t forget, it’s not just Costas who said that, but whoever wrote that horrible speech he was looking into the teleprompter for should take some heat too.

I wish I could hark back to a time when I would hear that phrase about a Jets game, but I can’t seem to hark hard enough or something :/
Yeah, Costas should really have known better…he’s no noob to sports broadcasting. Particularly saying that if Belcher didn’t have access to a gun, he and his girl would still be alive today. That is absolutely a disgusting…for lack of any better word here. I couldn’t believe it when I heard it. But there it is.
Pure speculation here, but if Belcher had driven him and his girl off a cliff into a lake, Not Costas or anyone else would blame access to automobiles for these horrific deaths. Or knives, or poison…seems only guns can be spoke of this way.
Unreal.
JetBoy on December 3, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Did anyone ask Costas? I mean I expect such an uneducated comment from someone like Jason Whitlock in his newspaper, but Costas just embarrassed himself on national tv. My guess is three quarters of the audience he was talking to last night owns at least one gun. Way to insult America. Stick to baseball Bob.
Ellis on December 3, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Dan Patrick show this morning was interesting. DP, who I am neutral on, seemed to agree with Costas. Tony Dungee, who walks on water as far as I’m concerned, was a little more balanced. Said he has never owned a gun, never fired a gun and didn’t see the need for one, but none the less said that argument was over. Said that on opening day of training camp, over 3/4 of *the Colts* players said they owned guns. The team would then bring he FBI in to brief the players on the law, then explain the NFL and team rules for gun possession.

Incidentally, Al Michaels is as conservative as Bob Costas is a leftist.
But a lot of viewers are unaware of that because Michaels, pro that he is, doesn’t use his Sunday Night pulpit as a soapbox to pontificate his political views the way his small-minded, and small, colleague does.
I used to have a world of respect for Bob Costas. Now he’s just another useless elitist lefty to me.

I’d say that Costas’ little rant from the safety of a broadcast booth was pathetic. I suspect that no one in the stadium heard Costas’ comments because the booing would still be echoing off the rafters this morning. If he truly felt this was something important, he should have manned up and walked out on the 50 yard line of Cowboy Stadium and given that speech – without security or body guards.
2nd Ammendment Mother on December 3, 2012 at 10:14 AM
And Little Bobby Costas will feel so warm and yummy knowing that only police have guns… because that is the definition of a Police State… good job, Little Bobby! Love that advocacy for a Police State as ‘saving lives’ of citizens! Now can you name a Police State where citizens are not the main victims of the Police?
I’ll give ya time to research that, Bobby-boy.
But wouldya shut yer trap until you do the freaking research?

Maybe a sportscaster pissed him off and drove him to do it.

Maybe he forgot to vote or voted more than once and was angry.

Would you expect anything less from the state run media commies at NBC? Was Lil’ Bobbay reading directly from Obama’s TelePrompTer? These are the same people that brought you a football game lit by candles or some kind of green gimmick like that. There are certain announcers that you turn the volume down and just watch the game. Costas is one of them. His shortman’s syndrome he has suffered from his entire broadcasting career has made him unwatchable and not worth listening to.
There are leftists who want to ban football because of it’s violence and injury it causes to athletes lives. Yet Lil’ Cost doesn’t mind collecting a big check to describe a sport where grown men are killing themselves slowly for entertainment. His liberal guilt that has him ranting about guns is absent regarding this.

Bob must be up for a contract extension and needs improve his liberal credentials to his masters at NBC. If was intent on killing he could have done it with a baseball bat, knife, his fists, whatever… there are alternatives to ending one’s own life too. It’s not the gun Bob. Belcher was damaged, he just happened to pick the gun as his weapon of choice.

I will not watch another NFL game on NBC until Costas is removed. If he shows up on other broadcasts on NBC or the NBCSN, I will turn it off.
It can be done – and the NRA has lots of democrats – time to call in some markers. Thank goodness Mr. Harrison showed some perspective – this is about domestic violence. And as we all know – it ends in many different ways and, unfortunately, death by means other than a gun is not unheard of.

Put the whole gun thing off to the side – because on that Costas and Whitlock were very worng – no factual basis for the remark – if someone wants you dead bad enough – you will be, we have seen it way too much.
But from a broadcasting perspective – an extended family member of mine in the sports broadcasting biz told me she turned it off as well – not because of the message he was spouting, but because of his insistennce in spouting any message at all. She found it very unprofessional, and unbecoming of a sports broadcaster, to wade into the subject from a political perspective. In essence, she said Costas showed no class. And if my relative were in a management position within NBC she would be asking for Costas’s letter of resignation today, failing which she would fire him for cause.

Costas was a script reading, talking-head when he started in Tucson. He, like the most of the talking-heads are mental midgets and outside of a few carefully scripted subjects are basically morons. If you had to be marooned on a desert island the LAST person you’d wish to be with would be a script reader from the TV industry. It would not take long for you to fabricate a weapon of some sort and rid yourself of your problem.

Anabolic steroids affect each person differently. There is evidence from clinical studies of hamsters injected with steroids that steroids affect brain chemistry, increase agression and diminish impulse control. These effects continue for long periods after the subject has ceased injecting steroids. Therefore, we should take away guns.
