Video: Bob Costas on gun control … in the middle of an NFL game

posted at 8:01 am on December 3, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

If you were watching what turned out to be an unexpectedly good and well-played game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys last night, then you’ve already seen this strange interlude from Bob Costas last night, in which he used 90 seconds of halftime analysis to pontificate on the need to make handguns illegal.  Nothing Costas says in this clip is new or even terribly interesting — Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher used a gun to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and himself, so no one should own guns — but the context of his anti-Second Amendment rant was incredibly bizarre, and not just because it came in the middle of a halftime show with “God Bless America” playing in the background:

Why bizarre?  Well, if you watched NBC’s Football Night in America last night, you’d already know that the broadcast team could barely even mention the fact that Belcher committed murder.  Before and during the game, they used phrases like “lost her life in this tragedy” to describe what happened to his victim and other non-judgmental phrases.  Into that context comes Costas to blame … the gun.  It was surreal, an experience only interrupted in the post-game show when Rodney Harrison appeared to get a little angry and remind everyone that Belcher killed someone else besides himself.  And while I didn’t watch the earlier games during the day, NBC’s crew was not really an exception in how they approached the Belcher murder-suicide story.

Kudos to the Chiefs, however, who dedicated their game yesterday not to Belcher or gun control, but to the victims of domestic violence.  That honored the true victim, and highlighted the true social ill.

Costas is an IDIOT who should be FIRED!

We don’t know WHY he did what he did – steroids, concussions, etc? How about we find out why he did what he did?

Also, he happened to do it with a gun…would Costa be alright with it if he had used a knife, plastic bag / suffocation, pills, etc? Would he have been talking about outlawing knives, plastic bags, etc had one of those been used?

I HATE friggin’ people who try to use a tragic event to push a political agenda. Shame on you, Costa!

easyt65 on December 3, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Sooo … a man motivated enough to commit the most egregious crime, murder, and who is enabled by his multi-million dollar salary, is some how going to be constrained by a law outlawing firearms, is this what you’re saying, Bob?

Apparently, a very similar law did not stop you, Bob, when you went and bought that load of drugs you’re on.

I think it might be better to allow potential victims a weapon … and to teach your daughters to how to judge the character of a man.

M240H on December 3, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Just wow. I have no words for the amount of contempt I have against that moron agreeing with someone by stating if guns were illegal, the murderer and his girlfriend would be alive. Surely he wouldn’t have stabbed her or strangled or beat her to death. No, that damn gun turned him into a homicidal maniac.

Sickens me.

Garym on December 3, 2012 at 11:52 AM

And anyone is surprised … why?

Costas, as some of us have known for decades, is a little wimp of a “male” who lives vicariously through the lives of jocks, something the midget could never attain. Who gives a flyin’ flock what he says?
NEXT UP: He might apologize:
“If I offended anyone … ” a typical line for his wuss ilk.
I refuse to watch or listen to him. Period.
Little, wimpy wannabee MEN make me sick.

The only bit of truth to Costas’ speech would be if he would have included a quote from Doc Holliday in Tombstone, “It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.”

It’s also pathetic and almost funny how serious he is during his little diabtribe — while regurgitating an article written by someone else. He reminds me of an old man forwarding conspiracy theory chain emails to everyone on his contacts list: “This one’s really important! I had no idea!”

Here is the email I sent to NBC sports :

The political speech Bob Costa gave last night opposing our second amendment rights should result in his immediate dismissal from the network . People watch football to be entertained and not to be preached to . Costa absolved a murderer of all blame while condemning peaceful citizens that exercise their constitutional rights to bear and keep arms . His appalling arrogance and ignorance in voicing his own political views during an NFL telecast should not be tolerated by the network or the NFL . Until Costa apologizes or is dismissed I will no longer watch NFL games on NBC .

Of course and since we have free health care now and Obama has told us doctors are just looking for any excuse to lop off a limb or 2 anyways it’s a win/win situation if we just have them chop off everybody’s hands.(Did I put enough snark directed at Costas in that? They won’t know the difference anyway. Plus, I’m on my fifth Toyota and I see in the screen cap the Toyota logo in the crawler at the bottom. They will receive a letter from me also because I really am due for a new car and it will likely be another Toyota so they may take an interest if enough people comment to them.

I mean look at me… I’ve own a gun(s) for over 25 years and I don’t have these violent aspirations to go out and shoot someone. Costa and the likes have no idea what they are talking about. He’s got a platform and should know better than to spew his opinion about something he knows nothing about. Yeah, like he’s an expert.

Why not turn off it off regardless? This is the media who dragged Obama over the finish line. Why is anyone still watching their crap? If you must, there are ways to watch things afterwards. Google is your friend and learn how to find things for free.

It’s estimated that guns are used by people to defend themselves over 100,000 times a year. Most times involve nothing more than brandishing the gun to scare a criminal away. Apparently, Bob Costas is a supporter of taking everyones gun away and letting violent criminals rob, beat, rap, and murder people at will.

Heftyjo on December 3, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Thanks Mr. Costas for helping us understand how a weapon forced someone to commit murder. If only he didn’t have a gun then he would probably never have even thought about killing is wife. It’s almost like that gun had a mind of its own telling him, encouraging him, even begging him to load it up and pull the trigger 9 times on his wife and then that other gun that forced him to pull the trigger on himself.

Three Killed in Casper Attacks
http://www.k2tv.com/news.php?id=2372

“What we can find is that the individual that committed the violent acts was not a student at the College, but that there was a known relationship between [the victims],” said Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh at a press conference on Friday afternoon. The Police Chief later clarified that all three had known each other.

Walsh said no firearms were used during the homicides, and rather said that “edged weapons” were involved. However, multiple students told K2 News that some kind of a bow-and-arrow weapon was used.

“If the perp hadn’t possess an edged weapon, those 3 people would both be alive today.”

A handgun just jumped into Belcher’s hand and started whispering to him. Auditioning for PMSNBC Bob? Just wondering…

SNF has been the only thing worth watching on NBC for a long time now, despite the presence of Collinsworth, the worst color man in major sports broadcasting today. Last night I removed NBC from my channel list. It’s not even worth the extra button click to surf past it now.

Making this a little more surreal to me is that I am a member of the Arlington, Tx Police Department and pre-game/halftime was dedicated to first responders (Police, Fire). Pre-game was spent honoring two fallen officers from 2010, one of whom was my academy classmate, Jillian Smith. She was shot and killed by an a-hole who, like Belcher, couldn’t deal with life like an adult. After assaulting his girlfriend, he left to go get his gun, and then returned, first shooting Jillian who was there to take the report, then killing his girlfriend, and finally turning a gun on himself. Thankfully he was not star athlete so no one was wearing his jersey the next day, or building him makeshift memorials. And general consensus was that the fault was not with an inanimate object, but with that ass.

Costas was on the Dan Patrick radio program this morning trying to explain himself. Was interesting hearing him twist in the wind. The criticism has clearly touched a nerve.

The funniest part was hearing him apologize because his audience for not being smart enough understanding his comments. One of those classic “I’m not sorry I said it, I’m sorry you didn’t understand me” non-apologies.

He also tried to blame the pressures of time for people not understanding that he wasn’t making those comments personally, he was just reading someone elses comments.

Yea, Costas made no sense at all. Would have been far better if he had just said “Look, I have some strong opinions on gun control, but SNF was not the right platform for expressing those opinions. I’m sorry.” and left it at that. Instead he rambled on incoherently about trying to provide “perspective.”

Dan Patrick was even trying to keep his distance this morning. He made it a point to say he brought Costas on his show to let him explain himself and not because he thought what Costas said was correct.
