Who was it said FB, Twitter and Blogger were the Holy Trinity of narcissism? :~)

What will happen with Twitter is what has happened with the other two members of that unholy trinity. The Pope’s Twitter feed will become yet another echo chamber. For all that the twits are being their usual charming selves towards this news, the Catholics responding are being their usually ugly-minded and equally hateful selves in their responses.

One of the main reasons I’m no longer Catholic is because of the Catholic blogosphere. The pettiness and meanness and schoolyard bullying that goes on among these supposed “good” Catholics was pretty much the final nail in the coffin as far as my relationship with the Catholic Church goes.

This Twitter thing is bound to end the same way, with the Vatican probably putting out news items and so forth, but the usual suspects on either “side” using the feed as an excuse to snipe away at each other.

I seriously wonder if the internet and all the nastiness that comes with it is not truly the “abomination that causes all desolation”, lol!

I dunno. I have a Twitter account that I haven’t seen in over a year, and that I used to use mostly to follow my favorite food trucks and craft breweries, shallow beer-guzzlin’, rib-eatin’ thing that I am. Which is pretty much all it’s good for. Only now there’s one website here that aggregates all the greasy and hoppy goodness in one place, so I haven’t bothered with it in ages. So good luck to him, I guess, but I doubt it will end well.

You left Catholicism because you didn’t like the faux Catholics or something. The Church is the Church of Last Resort. Everybody is welcome, which includes their faults. You want to reject it because of its flawed people.

The Church has always used developing media.

There’s nothing wrong with social media if it can be used correctly. Twitter wars are stupid. But The Pope’s first tweet is December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I think that the Pope will be very serious about what he tweets.

Twitter can be more than tweeting coupons about greasy pizza. Conservatives use twitter. #tcot If it can be used to criticize liberals, so much the better.

I’m sure that it’ll be another way to attack the Church. But the Church has always stood, and it will continue to survive. Even now, when there’s talk about the Church having to go underground.

Haha — actually, I take back what I said about the Pope Twitter account not ending well. It will provide us with hours and hours of pure comedy gold. Which, I guess is a good thing. It’s always good when you can make people smile. :~)

Re: branding. Why do you think that the Church or the Pope will be tarnished by using social media, specifically, twitter? The Pope can spread the message of salvation and gets to control the message sent (instead of liberals trying to control the Church’s message or reputation).

Is the Pope really going to tweet? I mean, really going to actually, hands-on tweet?

This is like a corporate PR or marketing dept. Twitter account meant for promotional purposes, I suspect.

I don’t think the Pope himself is going to interact with anyone on Twitter, nor do I think the Pope himself is going to actually be doing the tweeting.

Personally, I don’t think this is a good idea. The Catholic blogosphere is already a pretty ugly business. The Pope should rise above. I’m no longer Catholic, but I think this definitely cheapens the brand (since they chose to go down the “brand” route with Twitter).

That the Church and various Catholic entities and persona are “brands” to begin with is pretty much everything Christ would hate.

Also, if the Pope is going to join Twitter (or, more likely, if the Vatican marketing/PR dept. is going to use Twitter), then he (or the Vatican) can’t complain when the twits on Twitter act like, well, the twits on Twitter.

The Church has always been attacked, whether on twitter, in the press, or whatever.

You’re very close to saying that the Church shouldn’t participate in society (or at least, what is considered the liberals’s domain–social media). But if the Church does, it deserves, i.e., can’t complain, when it’s attacked.

Homosexuals become priests specifically to gain access to boys, especially troubled boys. It was an enormous mistake for the Church to allow anyone with homosexual impulses to become priests or any other job with access to boys.

Well, girls were molested, too. So it wasn’t just homosexual predators. Also, some pedophiles don’t really care if their victims are boys or girls. They target young children of either sex. Those who prefer near-pubescent or pubescent minors may have a specific attraction to one sex or the other.

The priesthood attracted pedophiles because of the proximity to children the priesthood would give them — much like coaching, teaching, scouting. Ephebophiles and hebephiles with homosexual tendancies probably sought out the priesthood because they’d be in all-male communities that spent a great deal of time teaching and coaching at boys’ prep schools, hence the greater number of homosexual abusers in the priesthood. Plus, I think there’s something to the notion that communities without women around are dangerous for children — women — at least those of us who are mothers — just have a sixth sense about these things. There are lots of things about the priesthood and the communities in which priests live and work that make them very attractive to those who seek to harm young people.

As I stated, a priest can quit at any time. Priests also had full access to – whodathunkit – adults, if their “tentations” became unbearable.

Obama won the “Catholic” vote 50-48, hardly overwhelming. While I understand your concerns, I don’t think it has anything to do with the state of the Catholic church or corruption. It has more to do with “cradle Catholics” who fell away from the Church years ago, but who still, when asked by pollsters, claim to be Catholic because they were born Catholic. I have many people in my own extended family who were baptized as Catholics but haven’t seen the inside of a church in decades, but they’ll tell you in a heartbeat that they’re Catholic. And yes, they vote Democrat.

they gave more value to the “good name” of the church that to earthly justice for the victims of the crimes. I am happy if they just be continuously humiliated on this,they deserve it.

Yeah, well American Catholics voted overwhelmingly for the rat-eared wonder I guess in support of free contraception and despite attacks on religious institutions. It says all that needs to be said about the state of the Catholic church in the United States. Just as corrupt as any institution. There is no way that anybody truly concerned about salvation cannot be called a hypocrite if they voted for the rat-eared wonder and his attack on religion.
