Obama admin: By the way, we’re going to need insurers to pay to use our exchanges

posted at 5:01 pm on December 2, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

I thought ObamaCare was going to be so awesomely efficient and innovative, and know how to accomplish things so much better than the free market, that all of the associated health care costs were going to go down, insurance was going to get more affordable, and none of this was going to have any adverse effects on the middle class, or something? Via the NYT:

The Obama administration said Friday that it would charge insurance companies for the privilege of selling health insurance to millions of Americans in new online markets run by the federal government.

The cost of these “user fees” can be passed on to consumers. The proposed fees could add 3.5 percent to premiums for private health plans sold in insurance exchanges operated by the federal government.

In proposing the new rule, Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of health and human services, said that fees charged by the federal government would be “sufficient to cover the majority of costs related to the operation of federally facilitated exchanges.” She did not say how the remainder of the money would be raised. …

Fees charged for use of the federal exchange come on top of a separate annual fee to be imposed on health insurance companies to help offset the cost of expanding coverage under the new law. The annual fees, to be apportioned among insurers according to their shares of the nation’s health insurance market, are expected to total $6 billion in 2014 and more than $100 billion over 10 years.

Just getting these supposedly fabulous online insurance marketplaces set up is already turning into an unmitigated disaster — what on earth is going to happen when we finally get down to the business of actually insuring and caring for people? Rolling this thing out, the Obama administration is looking like a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off, and their unpreparedness in dealing with their own Frankenstein’s monster is showcasing all of the new costs and consequences coming with it.

The delusion that ObamaCare is going to do anything except turn our entire health care system into much more of an expensive, inefficient, bureaucratic nightmare than it already is, is quickly wearing thin — and we’ve barely even gotten started.

If they are the only game in town and you have to sell through an exchange then they can charge anything they want except that the premiums will be so high that most people and companies will just pay the penalty for not having insurance and go naked. Thus the government program will collect penalties from employers that drop coverage. Collect penalties from formerly insured employees who cannot afford a private policy and collect marketing fees from insurance companies who can’t get very many people to buy their overpriced policies. The government wins big time. Money from every player and no need to actually provide any health care except to the indigent who generally just go to the emergency room anyway where they are required to provide the service whether they pay or not.

Question: “Do you think the country will be better off or worse off four years from now?” A pretty simple measure of Americans’ expectations. Results show the country’s expectations about an Obama presidency have changed dramatically in these past 48 months — and not for the better.

Answer: Four years ago the question found an impressive 76% of Americans figured the country would be better off by now. Silly, silly people.

Well, now barely half (56%) expect life in America to get better, a drop of 20 points, or 26%.

How about people who expect things to stay about the same? Four years ago 4%. Today, only half that.

OK then, how about America’s pessimists who expect things to get worse? In 2008, only 19% thought that. How right they were, eh?

But today, 1,487 days after the United States electorate bought Obama’s Hope and Change bill of goods, the percentage expecting worse things before he’s gone has more than doubled — to 40% expecting negative change.

Fools, utter fools.

In a move Napoleon would have approved, he is attempting to turn his narrow victory in November into decisive victory in January.

[Of course, this is the college grad who had no idea that state-mandatory liability auto insurance did not cover collision damage to one's own car, and tried to tell all of us that his mom has all of her health insurance taken away because she had a pre-existing condition...and over half of the electorate just sat there and said nothing, just sat there in rapture at his every word...and then re-elected him.]

One of the big problems with ObamaCare was that an incredible amount of power was given to the unelected, unaccountable head of HSS.

It’s unbelievable that so many Dem voters are OK with this. The Left seems to forget that one day, somewhere down the line, someone they really hate will become head of HHS. And there won’t be anything they can do about it. That’s the double-edged sword when you (willingly) transfer power away from elected reps to unelected, entrenched bureaucrats.

That’s assuming anyone in the opposition will have any guts to make any changes. Chances of that happening are less than nil.

The Dems literally think they will be in control of the federal government forever (House be damned). As long as the GOP is willing to lay down, act like liberals and silence the voices of conservatives, their instincts will be correct.

They will..

So the legislation will be harder to implement than anyone who drafted it thought it would be.

And cost more.

And be less responsive.

With fewer choices.

With structure that makes trying to get new diagnoses more expensive.

And end effective treatments because they cost too much.

Plus aim to reduce costs by limiting services to the elderly.

Or anyone else, come to that, since they can’t get the thing working that means everyone will get less care at higher costs with fewer benefits.

This is the Leftist dream world!

If you think medical care was expensive, just wait until you start making lots of it FREE! Then it will be priceless and unavailable at any cost.

Obamacare is Barry’s “Great Leap Forward”. It will be a resounding success. Mainly because no one will be allowed to criticize it. It will mirror Chairman Mao’s “Great Leap Forward” in that it will enslave and murder millions, but so it goes with despots.

Yeah, it really sucks being right.

I would have rather had egg all over my face, and willing to crawl over hot coals for having been proven wrong about all this.

Chief Justice Roberts is clearly in the “let it burn” “The peasants are revolting!… Damn straight, they stink on ice!” camp.

Well all this talk about Obama and ObamaCare gives me the urge to go clean my bathrooms.

Later….

gophergirl on December 2, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Well, I see a real money making opportunity here, given that the Federal Government will be establishing printing presses, so to speak, and then denying people the right to use them if they don’t pay the right fees….

Why do I smell smoldering First Amendment remains? When the Government gives a printing press to some, and denies same to others, isn’t that a violation of the First Amendment?

Anyone who can establish market share by undercutting the Government (for these websites will be informational in nature) will do well.
