Video: Egyptian women protest Morsi, Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo

posted at 11:31 am on December 1, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The streets of Cairo have remained flooded with protestors ever since Mohamed Morsi issued decrees that “temporarily” maki him a dictator — or as some say, a pharaoh. Morsi pledged to end his decrees as soon as Egypt votes on the constitution drafted by his Muslim Brotherhood and Salafist allies, but that has not slowed down opposition. CNN reports this morning that women flooded into Tahrir Square to protest both Morsi and his Islamist allies, and pledge to remain until Morsi cancels the plebiscite on his draft constitution and his decrees:

Morsi opponents are no longer alone in Tahrir Square, however. Counterprotests have begun on behalf of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood:

Egyptian Islamists are holding rallies in support of President Mohammed Morsi ahead of his expected ratification of a new post-revolutionary constitution that opponents fear is too based in sharia law and does not adequately protect human rights.

The demonstrations in Cairo and across the country come after days of rival protests by supporters and opponents of Morsi, who is expected to call a quickfire referendum on Saturday on the new draft constitution in order to hurry it through before Egypt’s supreme constitutional court can dissolve the assembly that drafted it.

The draft has been criticised for its ambiguous language on civil liberties, women’s and minority rights and freedom of expression, as well as its concentration on enshrining sharia law as the basis for legislation. It also protects army privileges that Morsi’s opponents want revoked, including the ability to try civilians in military courts.

Expect Morsi to approve the plebiscite today, though, because by tomorrow it will be too late:

“All indications point to the president calling for a referendum on Saturday after he officially receives and ratifies the draft constitution,” said Sameh El-Essawia, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice party. “There is a rush because you can’t leave the country like this and wait for a politicised verdict from the supreme constitutional court.”

The Muslim Brotherhood fears the court will dissolve the Islamist-dominated assembly that created the constitution when it meets on Sunday. By law, once Morsi calls for the referendum, the assembly’s dissolution becomes a moot point.

If that happens, Egyptians warn the US that we won’t like the outcome, reports Richard Engel:

This is also a warning, they claim, of what may happen across the Middle East. The era of the Muslim Brotherhood appears to have arrived. President Obama has hailed the Brotherhood’s President Mohammed Morsi as a pragmatist who helped end the Gaza crisis. Egyptians here think the Brotherhood has conned Washington, just like it conned them.

“President Obama is supporting a terrorist,” a man told me amid chants of “Leave! Leave!” in Tahrir Square and “Down, down with the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual leader.” Before, it was “Down, down with Mubarak.”

Engel appears to agree with them that Morsi conned Obama and the State Department.  His report is deeply pessimistic about the future with the Muslim Brotherhood in charge, and quite clearly thinks that the Obama administration doesn’t have a clue about it:

Morsi last night apologized for the power grab and said he didn’t want the extra authorities, but that they were necessary for the good of the people and to safeguard the revolution. Dictators always say stuff like that. Burn down the village to save it.

At first Egyptians were shocked that Morsi would make such an obvious and, according to Egyptian judges, blatantly illegal move. It’s clear now, as some analysts have long feared, that the brotherhood is making sure it doesn’t lose power again by taking control of Egypt’s constitution. The Brotherhood wants to write the rules of the game. Now they’ve done that too. …

Yet the United States has remained mostly silent on all this, urging both sides to stay calm and work it out. Washington’s policy seems to be that what’s going on is simply democracy in progress as Egyptians learn to use their new rights.

But in Tahrir Square people seem convinced the Brotherhood isn’t testing its fledgling wings. They say Morsi knows exactly what he’s doing, Washington be warned.

Too late, I’m afraid.

Uh-oh.

And I fear I’ll be sounding exactly like that constant Hannity repetition that many of you say you hate, but it bears repeating.

What do expect from a Middle Eastern Muslim country? Someone espousing the Rights of Man and proposing a Bill of Rights in a written constitution? In 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell I thought sanity had somehow returned to mankind. How wrong could I have been.

The silence from the feminists about the mistreatment of women in the muslim world is deafening.

Which proves they are more about destroying American capitalism (and islam, which is socialist, is an ally) than the sisterhood. FemiNazis see the abuse and ritual murder of muslim women as collateral damage because they need islamists as an ally.

How do Americans watch this, let alone talk or comment on this type of post, while recognizing that the Egyptian people are fighting for Freedom & Rights, while Americans are Surrendering like 12 yr old French School Girls and all we’re facing, is the Marxist Messiah! While Patriots fight & Die in Tahrir Square, the American people accepted Blatant & Massive Voter Fraud in a Presidential Election! AND DID NOTHING ABOUT IT! The White House was stolen & we did nothing! No protest! No March! NOTHING! An Act of Treason that required Millions of People in the Streets, yet Americans Surrendered!
It’s a sad thing to be a student of history. To know the character of Patriots and their willingness to protect their Freedoms! Knowing that if they were alive to see what has taken place over the last few months, they would be saddened by the SHEEP, surrendering the freedoms, his generations, lived & died for, but they would be calling for Revolution from the Butcher of Benghazi, as well as, those colluding with him, the eSTABrepubs/rinos!

…don’t withdraw!…pick your battles… now!
For 25 years…I used to let co-workers, family and friends with their liberal BS make their comments in gatherings…make one or two retorts…and just let ‘them talk’…now I don’t quit!…and guess what?…they don’t have much to say lately…since they can’t seem to win the arguments about anything…and start to look foolish in front of everybody!
For 25 years I’ve been battling 3 different editors in our local paper with the slant on stories presented and the ‘letters to the editor’ presented…when they would edit my rebuttals to the people involved…they knew they would get a phone call or email. They let people use their opinion section as a campaign tool…instead of ‘buying space’ in their paper. The situation would change for a month or two…then it would be the same old same old! Now I don’t bother with them! I encourage others to cancel their subscriptions and not bother with their internet edition either…they can condense their operations only so many times…and merge so often…before they die…and I’m seeing it!
The papers like the Detroit News and Free Press is still a battle worth responding too! For years they have had the same dozen people use their opinion page as a propaganda column. I know MANY people write an opinion-good ones-that never get published…but yet the same people get published almost weekly!…I go after the editor’s periodically to just hire those people as a weekly columnist! The people then seem to disappear for a month or two…and when they start up again…I do too! If you write a rebuttal that embarrases the writer…they seem to disappear for a month too!…but they know people have short memories…and you know how progressives are!
9 out of 10 people do not approve of some issue…yet their opinion pieces have 9 out of 10 opinion pieces supporting the other view. Enough of that sh!t! …We let it happen! Stay engaged!

KOOLAID2 on December 1, 2012 at 2:28 PM

Wonder what things will be like, here, in the US, in 2016, when we try to fire the guy in the White House?

Will we be met with official decrees and a president telling us that since we are in crisis he simply has to stay in charge for at least one more term? You know, to prevent chaos and collapse?

Yes, this administration invited the Moslem Brotherhood to power all across the Middle East, opened the gates for millions of Mohammedans to revert to their core beliefs…jihad, chaos, killing and destroying any and all who do not share their fervent love foe Allah.

This Administration told us that this is what the “people” demanded. Thewy toppled at least two governments in the process in order to usher in a new age of chaos on the streets and civil war in the back alleys…and encouraged Islamists of all stripes to seize power wherever they could.

People are going to die. Lots of them. Thousands have died already, because of the policies of this Administration.

And for what?

It certainly isn’t for personal liberty, and the protection of the fundamental Rights of all men nor the promulgation of constitutional representative government accountable to the people….not here…and certainly not in the Middle East.

But, I am just a bitter clinger, “racist” and ossified old school conservative who just doesn’t understand.

They know so much more than any of us can fathom.

They are progressive.

coldwarrior on December 1, 2012 at 2:58 PM

Why are they criticizing Obama for not doing anything? This is what is known as “calm leadership”. He’s pretty calm about everything. How inspiring he is by remaining calm while the rest of the world acts so concerned about all this unrest. It makes me wish he had been President when the twin towers were attacked. His calm leadership would have seen us through that. I doubt he would have stood atop those ruins vowing revenge on our enemies. He would have issued a few words to the media, gone to Vegas and raised some money. He would leave the details to the media. The attack on the towers would have been news for one week, two..tops.

Ken James on December 1, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Three short points:

SWalker on December 1, 2012 at 12:39 PM

1) You are right to be upset about the “Crescent” at the crash site of Flight 93 and i can’t reach my pro-western Muslim friend but he would probably agree. The shape doesn’t mean what the cross does to Christians but it is a symbol. However, architects are weird so just approach the person with the purse strings. The boss emeritus is on it so the best moves will probably be made.

profitsbeard on December 1, 2012 at 11:47 AM

2) Women’s groups in the US don’t worry about the world despite having lectures and fund raisers occasionally. It is a fact that lefties promoting NOW will say all kinds of things about their interest in justice but the reality is that is is mostly limited to “economic justice” and in the USA.

I have to give NOW props for going after Chris Brown and OJ. I was really disappointed with the Bill Clinton situation but one of them told me they had no complaint from a woman in that affair.

coldwarrior on December 1, 2012 at 2:58 PM

3) The left likes dictators or repressive govt’s if they hate the US and/or are not run by folks with blue or green eyes.

Imagine if Exxon had been running Iran when they had the rebellion against the election results. The UN would probably invade.

IlikedAUH2O on December 1, 2012 at 3:26 PM

Ken James on December 1, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Considering what the left did to W’s approval ratings, just ignoring the murder of Americans is probably an idea straight out of The Prince and not a problem for Chicago style politics. Justice is strange in some places.

I have to mention this:

(Chicago) Tribune investigation finds few arrests and prosecutions in 530 Cook County cases of attempted child abduction by a stranger.

That would drive Bill O’Reilly nuts!

There are numerous cases on the web of crimes in Chicago going unpunished. One was a woman who was mugged but would likely vote for the same guy who was running everything when she was mugged and the police would do nothing. I was in Vegas and a shuttle driver was lecturing the whole passenger audience on the Nevada tendency toward the election of fools over and over. He was even more amazed that the state went for President Obama. A lot of people were red at the guy. One remarked that he should do his job or he might find himself out of work!

I gave him a tip.

And to show why illegal immigration is not a problem:

MEXICO CITY — Four out of five homicides go unpunished in Mexico, in part because prosecutors and police focus on less serious cases that are easier to solve, a Mexican think tank’s report said Monday.

VorDaj on December 1, 2012 at 4:01 PM

Yep.

I’d wager very few have taken the time to look at the “progressive” movement over the past century or so.

It is fascist. It is fascism writ large.

It is all about having an elite, a smart, more “compassionate” and “educated” class of rulers, unelected rulers, above the law, of course, who act out of pure altruism…to make sure all the rest of the world does not have to take care of themselves. The state will provide, so long as the people submit.

I cannot yet find a “progressive” in any place today, who has seen and actually understands the H.G> Well’s book/movie “Things to Come” which came out in the 1930′s. To Well’s, it was a prophetic tome, designed to expound and praise progressivism as the panacea for all the world’s ills and the inability of people to simply get along.

They prefer to have all of us ruled by super-educated, super intelligent super men, in order to prevent wars, stop injustice, end starvation, eradicate all the ills of mankind…all unelected officials and supermen, who are just soooo much better than us common folk.

If only we’d accept their worldview, and let them rule us, the world would be so much better. If we submit.

Every tinpot dictator and mass-murdering ruler of the past century came to power with the same progressive promise…to help the people, end starvation, make social justice the law of the land….that sort of thing. Not a one came to power with the promise to kill millions, or eradicate entire cultures, or bankrupt and enslave their own people.

Nope.

That’s be too obvious to the masses and dupes, and sheep.

Not a lot has changed over the century.

Same progressive “ideals.” Same institutionalized fascism.

And those of us Conservatives and Libertarians? We are at fault?

We simply have to submit.

No wonder this progressive President and his ilk are so much in synch with Islam.

It is all about submission.

Acceptance of fascism.

Fascists, and other socialists like communists, must always believe in the state rather than in individuals. It’s in their nature.
America’s, or Kenya’s, Benito Mussolini: “You didn’t build that [the state did]”

And whether that be a business or career or whatever, is pure unadulterated Benito Mussolini, just less erudite than the way Benito Mussolini put it as Obama has a much lower IQ than Mussolini did. So if Benito Mussolini was a fascist, and he was, so is Barack Obama.

Benito Mussolini (an Obama’s predecessor): “Against individualism, the fascist conception is for the State; and it is for the individual [only] in so far as he coincides with the State, which is the conscience and universal will of man. Fascism conceives of the State as an absolute, in comparison with which all individuals or groups are relative, only to be conceived in their relation to the State. The Fascist conception of the State is all-embracing; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist, much less have value. Thus understood, Fascism is totalitarian, and the Fascist State — a synthesis and a unit inclusive of all values — interprets, develops, and potentiates the whole life of a people.”

And Glenn Beck was a paranoid wierdo. We knew they were right when they said it.

VegasRick on December 1, 2012 at 11:40 AM

Yep, but we as Conservatives throw what little national voice we have under the bus because we don’t care for their delivery.

Well said.

Really have to stop with this battered women’s syndrome behavior. The media and liberals will never like us no matter how “nice” we are.

I’m only talking about different conservative voices. One person hates Hannity, another hates Rush, everyone makes fun of Beck like he’s unhinged. For better or worse these people are only voices. Levin, Coulter and lot of the admin here.

hawkdriver on December 1, 2012 at 5:08 PM

And we can’t hear the shouts of American Feminists because…..? Wonder if they will take off their clothes or put on a vagina suit to show their support? Calling all American feminists!Where are YOU? Crickets, crickets, crickets.

Charm on December 1, 2012 at 1:35 PM

Sorry. They’re off stockpiling tampons and getting free birth control after their state paid abortions.

Come back later.

kim roy on December 1, 2012 at 5:09 PM

Why are they criticizing Obama for not doing anything? This is what is known as “calm leadership”. He’s pretty calm about everything. How inspiring he is by remaining calm while the rest of the world acts so concerned about all this unrest. It makes me wish he had been President when the twin towers were attacked. His calm leadership would have seen us through that. I doubt he would have stood atop those ruins vowing revenge on our enemies. He would have issued a few words to the media, gone to Vegas and raised some money. He would leave the details to the media. The attack on the towers would have been news for one week, two..tops.

I am too. Malkin gets complaints because she’s shrill. Coulter looks like a man (although I do wonder about her sometimes for her love of RINOs, but I digress), etc.

It’s like we are supposed to be nice and try to get our message out with polite people who raise their pinkies at tea time.

We abandon our fighters way too easily.

Remember always, Thomas Paine, political activist, Common Sense, pamphleteer of the Revolution, literary inspiration to the Cause, was rejected after the Revolution…died penniless and obscure, and only six people attended his funeral.

Seems we are too polite to our foes, and too harsh on our own.

Not a good way to promulgate the cause of liberty and freedom.

That would satisfy a grievance desire and nothing more.

The media includes everything from the Alphabet ‘news’ networks, to fox, to the not-so-new media, to print, and gossip.

People consume the media they choose, much the same way they drink the flavor of soda they do.

Realistically, you can’t call 50% of the country idiots and hang’em. So what’s you’re positive way forward?

It would be nice if hillary, jarrett and rice would have to wear headscarves. Come to think of it, every liberal hag should since they support the muslim in power.

Hijab is easy.

Now if these women truly believed, and were not just manipulating the electorate, they’d remove themselves from politics entirely, submit to their husbands 100%, and never leave the home nor appear in public without their husbands or without the permission of their husbands and accompanied always by appropriate chaperones whilst wearing the burkha.

But, like all progressives, for them, it is all talk, and up to others to submit, never them.

coldwarrior on December 1, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Taking a long view here, Bush was a nation-builder, Obama is a nation-destroyer.

Even if his destructive plan is realized, Muslims have proved themselves incapable of living with each other so the only thing to be feared from a caliphate is extended poverty and ignorance in a large part of the middle-east.

If we have to go to war with these radicals, racists, fanatics and fascists, we will win.
