Video: Small-business America

posted at 10:31 am on November 30, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Meet Jerry Gorski.  He owns a small business in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, not far from where Barack Obama will argue today that people who earn more than $250,000 a year need to pay their fair share.  Jerry owns his own business and employes 17 people, and has managed to weather the economic storms of the past four years — mainly by avoiding investment in his business.  Now that he’s finally been able to recalculate his business model, though, Obama wants to jack up tax rates on S-corp businesses like Gorski Engineering, and now Jerry has to put off growth-expanding activities for at least a while longer.  House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy released this video earlier today:

“This notion of $250,000 being the top 2% or the wealthy people in America ignores the way most small businesses work in America,” Jerry Gorski said in the video.  “We just went through a horrible climate where our work was off 40%…We went through every bit of money that we set aside for a rainy day but it’s been a long rainy day.  And now our company has figured out how to survive in this economy and the first thing we want to do with any income I have is tax it? That’s uncertainty.”

Gorski Engineering, founded in 1954, is a sub chapter S corporation that employs 17 people about 15 miles away from President Obama’s scheduled stop at Harfield, PA based Rodon Group Factory.

“The President is heading to Pennsylvania today in full campaign mode to make the argument to the American people that tax rate increases are the only solution to our nation’s economic woes,” McCarthy said. “He’s wrong. What our country needs is a boost in economic growth so our job creators, like Jerry Gorski, can start hiring again. Tax rate increases don’t stimulate economic growth – they drain small businesses of the capital they need to grow and expand their operation. Small businesses employ the majority of Americans and are the engines of our economy. They will also be the most adversely affected by an increase in tax rates.

“The White House proposal offered yesterday by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner shows that the Administration is interested in scoring a political victory at the expense of our country’s Jerry Gorskis. It is my hope that President Obama stops merely giving lip service to the idea of a ‘balanced approach’ to prevent the fiscal cliff and will actually come to the negotiating table where Republicans have already offered serious solutions.”

And perhaps even this might be worth it — if Obama was serious about reaching a compromise that fixed the very broken federal budget process and ended trillion-dollar deficits.  The editors of Bloomberg rip Obama and his fellow Democrats today for his lack of seriousness so far in these fiscal cliff negotiations:

One by one, congressional Republicans are revoking their no-tax-increase pledges, opening the door to a fiscal-cliff compromise. Sadly, Democrats are just as quickly closing the door by calling for tax increases now and entitlement cuts later, if at all.

Democrats have good reasons (or so they think), beginning with their interpretation of U.S. President Barack Obama’s Nov. 6 victory as a mandate to raise tax rates on the wealthy while protecting the social contract. Also, liberal groups are making political trouble for Democrats by inciting seniors to oppose any and all cuts to Medicare and Social Security.

But if Democrats refuse to control entitlements, there will be no fiscal-cliff deal. … The only question is this: If Obama was willing to adopt these reforms last year, why not now?

Jerry Gorski would probably like an answer to that question, too … since he’ll end up paying for it.

EVIL HORRIBLE RACIST BIGOT HOMOPHOBE WIFE MURDERING TAX FELON

tom daschle concerned on November 30, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Weak effort. The guy is obviously a rich white bigot, so he deserves to be taxed more and if you disagree, you must be a rich white bigot also.

txmomof6 on November 30, 2012 at 10:43 AM

Obama doesn’t give a rat’s backside. Neither do the dems. They are taking their victory as a mandate and are acting all big and bad.

But Obama needs this guy’s money to fund his new $50B ‘stimulus’ slush fund.

“That’s uncertainty.”

Call it “trickle up uncertainty.”

Small businesses like Gorski’s are the lifeblood of large global corporations like the one that I work for. As the smaller businesses hold off on investing in their businesses, we in turn are also holding off on investing in growth.

It’s a vicious cycle that will never be broken as long as the Democraps keep threatening businesses and job creators with higher taxes and regulations.

4 more years of this Great Recession. Ugh.

Quit whining and tighten your belt a bit more, Jerry – Obama’s gotta pay for that 3-week $4million vacation and $200million inauguration somehow.

Midas on November 30, 2012 at 11:08 AM

LET IT BURN Sorry Mr Gorski, this is just the beginning, they will keep raising your taxes until they drive you out of business. Then 17 more people will be unemployed.
PA, Ohio, WV, Your energy producing parts of your state are going to be burned down by the EPA. Elections have consequences, Hopefully we can help all the businesses, rebuild from the ashes that are left. Too bad you can’t arrest the Thief in Chief when he shows up, Maaybe some Red state will, and charge him with the same crime as Madoff.

With little effort, you could post hundreds of these types of anecdotes every day. It would be a completely futile effort, because they are not seen on NBC, CBS, and ABC television. The drone of “fair share, evil rich” is all you see and hear. The 52% are eating it up. And yet nothing from the Republican leadership in response except, “well, we’d like to see some specifics from the White House before we raise taxes.”

Jeffster on November 30, 2012 at 11:17 AM

It is my hope that President Obama stops merely giving lip service to the idea of a ‘balanced approach’…

This is where Republicans blow it up EVERY FUC*ING TIME. Your “hope” that Obama will behave reasonably in the greater interests is the definition of insanity. This is war. Republicans’ inability to grock this overwhelming and omnipresent truth is killing us all. It is a marvel of exinction-worthy stupidity.

We need pyrotechnics right now. We need drama. The leading Republicans need to make the conscious decision to go wiggy. In public, without stop. We need to channel Milton Friedman through Jim Carrey. We need to stop being so fuc*ing civil. We need a concerted blitzkrieg of fundamental conservative arguments aligned with direct, unrelenting attacks on Obama’s good faith and economic literacy. We need warnings to the American people about what Obama is doing, as an act of betrayal and even treason.
When the media challenges us, we need to attack them.

Why not? We’re trapped in a sick surreal Looking-Glass world of the media’s making with NO WAY OUT. NOTHING we do could be worse than what we’re doing. We’re at war and we’re dying.

So many things wrong with this video.

1. He should be in the large urban areas working to provide jobs for minorities.

2. He should be riding public transportation like everyone else.

3. He started his own “business”. Which means he used government provided roads and bridges that WE all paid for.

4. He sounds too individualistic and too “me, me, me”.

5. HIS job should be NON-PROFIT and to just provide a utility to everyone.

6. Not sure if anyone noticed…..but….mmmm, he’s WHIIIIITE.

7. He looks like he’s “profi*ed” by his efforts. I can’t even write that ‘p’ word anymore it’s evil.

8. He appears to be a “capital**t” and wasn’t that ‘c word’ banned back in 2016 from public forums?

9. He looks like he might be a Conservative (which means neanderthal, powdered wig, antique throwback, slaveowner pig).

10. He obviously started off with a head start by being born to privileges that others didn’t have so he raped and pillaged his way to the top and back-stabbed and took advantage of us all.

11. He doesn’t act like a Democrat and he might even be a supporter of that Klondike Barbie that shall not be mentioned.

12. I bet he clings to his bible and guns…..bitterly.

13. I bet he’s not a fan of Agenda 21 or the U.N.

…..And you could go on and on.

It’s not like someone in the Obooba WH will see this and smack his forehead, see the light, and turn conservative.

If Gorski’s firm went under, well, there are lots of govt programs to help everyone out.

Isn’t that swell how the elite are more than willing to raise taxes on the little guy? Gotta love that stuff.

if Obama was serious about reaching a compromise that fixed the very broken federal budget process and ended trillion-dollar deficits.

If the rat-eared wonder was concerned about the budget process, he would have done something years ago. The bastard only wants to protect the filthy parasites that gave him a second term and to steal private wealth to pamper aforementioned parasites. In short, Mr. Gorski has to be driven into bankruptcy so that the Obamaphone lady and all the rest of the Democrat base can continue to be worthless pieces of trash.

Didn’t realize the marxists had decided it was now time to increase taxes on not just millionaires but $250000 and above. It was just a matter of time. They’ll eventually lower the threshold again. Just easing everyone into it slowly.

yhxqqsn on November 30, 2012 at 11:50 AM

I’m really getting tired of the hackneyed phrase, “asking the rich to pay their fair share”. They already pay at a higher rate than everybody else unless the money they make is from capital gains. Those capital gains are a result of investments made from money that had already been taxed. So, today, 39% becomes the new “fair share”, when tax revenues go down because the new rates are detrimental to progress, then the new “fair share” will become 42% and on and on.

One other thing, when Jugears speaks, he’s always talking about millionaires and billionaires while his tax policies are aimed at people who make $250K or more. Now, I realize I am just a dumb engineer with a background in calculus, differential equations, and tensor equations but I don’t think $250K qualifies one as a “millionaire”. I’m willing to admit to being wrong because I don’t have all of the mathematical background that the brilliant Barack Hussein Obama (mmm, mmm, mmm) has, but it just seems that way to me.

Until everyone here and in our society realizes that only anger and direct forceful action will stop what is happening to the country, nothing will happen. Republican politicians cannot bring themselves to wage the kind of political conflict required to stop the Marxist decay of the USA. It will require anger, determination, and soon, force, to stop this. If you are not at the point where you support that kind of commitment, where blood is willing to be spent to stop the train wreck, then nothing will get done. Your kids will never see the kind of lifestyle that you enjoyed. You will not live as well in your old age as the previous generation, and in fact, may never reach the point where you can stop working and enjoy some sort of leisure Life. Neighbor against neighbor. Father against Son.

Until you are ready to take up arms and stand up against the tyranny descending on your country, all your posturing and irritation is worth zip. And before you call me a fool and a traitorous subversive, remember, you, as conservatives, are already being painted as the enemy and the mob is well down the road to forming to destroy and kill or re-educate all of us. The anger on their side is at fever pitch and has been for years. The horns are growing out of your heads, to them, and the unthinking and oppressed peasants are being whipped up against you. You’re next, and they don’t care who disagrees with them. Violence is going to happen one way or another in the next few years.

The only question is whether you are with the mob, or its target.

Until you get mad, nothing else is going to stop this. Call me when you all get there if it isn’t too late.

I think the next time pResident O stops for a snack, he ought to be charged 100x the going rate because that would allow the owner to compensate for his normally low prices.

Good idea, but then the press would spend the next year vilifying the restaurant owner for being a racist, fat cat…etc. Remember what they did to Joe the Plumber for just asking a question to the Won, who answered honestly for a change.

Why would he ever stop campaigning? The tax the rich meme is the most successful lie ever peddled by the Dims. No sense in letting that wave subside until its fully exahusted.

But I can’t worry with that right now, what with trying to shore up my 401k investments for maximum payout to Obama, as part of my fair share.

At some point though, I’m sure he is going to turn his concern to what share is fair for me to keep.

$250,000 isn’t hardly anything when you are a small business.
We have assets worth far more than that being in ranching & trucking.
If you get rid of the tax tricks & such, we’d be even worse off than we are now.
There is no incentive for us to strive for making more $$ to hit the next tax bracket.
There is also little incentive for us to expand.
We expanded once. It took us toward the toilet.
So we actually had to downsize.
We could have expanded more & hired people to help us run our ranch.
But bcs of the Federal Government, we could not.
I know a lot of people in this business & others here in ND that have made these same decisions not to expand.
The Federal Government is tyrannical & has grown to larger proportions than our founders had to fight back in 1776.
And the American people are a slim majority of grifters.

What’s with this no taxes on the low and middle income families. Just ask anyone of the 18 million resent foreclosure victims what happens. The bank gets the property and everything in and around the property. MGIC or other groups pays off the mortgage. You get hauled in to court and a lein is placed on everything else for the balance of the mortgage. Then the government tax you on Capital gains for the cost of the house you lost. In 2009 I lost my contract as a trucker of 15 years with the WSJ. Even though I had a valid contract. I was replaced by non English speaking drivers that would work for less than minimum wage. Even though the Lender (one of the 17 Banks under investigation) was paid in full through MGIC, I have to pay capital gains on the loss. Believe it or not but on my 2011 tax return my tax owed is actually grater than my $32,000 in gross income.

I am also self employed. We are the Obama government’s greatest enemy because we are independent.
