Matthews: Maybe a Rice nomination isn’t such a great idea after all

posted at 11:21 am on November 28, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

When even Chris Matthews can see the dangers in pushing Susan Rice as Hillary Clinton’s replacement, maybe the White House should pay attention. Via Eliana Johnson at NRO, the second term hasn’t yet begun and Barack Obama needs as much political capital as possible to win on the “fiscal cliff.” Why take on this fight, especially when an easy option — and a better one — in John Kerry is at hand? Matthews predicts a “very messy and hot” fight over the nomination if it indeed comes, which will be “not helpful,” and Matthews hears it may not come at all:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Matthews then goes on to blame the CIA for giving Rice bad intelligence, but Rice told three Republican Senators yesterday that she had access to other intel, and simply ignored it. The blame-the-CIA argument that the White House has used since it became clear that Rice spoke nonsense on September 16th, notes Andrew Kaczynski of BuzzFeed. The blame has been shifted to David Petraeus, James Clapper, the intelligence community as a whole, and then the CIA blamed the FBI before taking it back.

Does Obama want a Senate confirmation hearing to explore all of those story shifts, too — or just a quiet confirmation of a new top diplomat in order to focus on the business he wants to accomplish? In Matthews’ mind, that’s a no-brainer, and it should be in the West Wing, too.

Why is Obama so opposed to nominating John Kerry(who served in Vietnam, BTW)? Is it because he and his party are afraid that would leave the vacant Senate seat in MassachusettEs vulnerable to a Scott Brown comeback?

I just can’t see him doing it, but, last night, all three of the Fox Allstars, including Mara, said they thought she would be nominated. Hard to think Obama would be that stupid or arrogant, but then I look at recent history and say to myself, ” Ah, yeah, there is evidence,…”

Why take on this fight, especially when an easy option — and a better one — in John Kerry is at hand?

Because the Indonesian gets a kick out of antagonizing Americans. It’s what he loves to do the most. It’s what his America-hating supporters are counting on him to do.

Kerry is just as poor of a nomination, though there is a benefit of finally getting his sorry butt out of the Senate … and the SecState job is a total throwaway, anyhow. The most pathetic people end up with the job and Shrillary showed that you can totally make a fool of yourself and the US (in that totally retarded RESET OVERCHARGED fiasco that would have gotten the offender stricken from public view for eternity, other than to be the butt of the most humiliating jokes known) and no one seems to care.

I’d prefer to have Incitatus as SecState. I guess Kerry is as close to the horse as we’re going to get …

What exactly are his “Qualifications”? He’s “accomplished” almost nada in over 2 decades in the Senate, and over that time has managed to insult members of the US military on more than one occasion.

Besides, if he did get the nod, the Dems might actually lose his seat in the Senate to Scott Brown.

It was only an out of reach brass ring dangled in front of her, if she would prostitute her self for the “One”. She will pull out because of all the flack she raises.
John Kerry wants it and will slide through the Senate like he was a greased pig. This will increase Obama’s political capital and we will never her of Susan Rice again.
As long as she is around Benghazi questions will not go away. They already lost the racist and sexist defense, nothing is left for her. She gave away her career on a try for the brass ring. Good for her.

He is really not of the Obama camp philosophically.
Not sure how he’d get along with Rice and S. Powers, both of whom seem to have Obama’s ear.
As much as I do not like her politics, I do admire Clinton’s work ethic. Not sure if Kerry has it in him to work that hard or keep out of the spotlight.
He has the potential to embarrass Obama out there and Obama knows it.

Why take on this fight, especially when an easy option — and a better one — in John Kerry is at hand?

Because Obama likes giving people the middle finger, and the best way to give the middle finger to the military is to put John Kerry in charge of it.

So Kerry is reserved for DOD. If necessary, Obama will scramble to come up with another Secretary of State.

But even then, I wouldn’t count on it.

Let’s face it, when it comes to politics, Obama is very much like a toddler. He doesn’t take the answer “No” very well.

Rice is Obama’s stalking horse for Kerry.

Kerry is unacceptable. To make him acceptable, Obama first pushes the even more unacceptable Rice. When she withdraws, he proposed Kerry as the “reasonable” alternative.

Opposing Kerry is then defined as “unreasonable”.

The whole situation is preposterous. But Obama will have the MSM spreading this manure like extra mayo on a ham sandwich. The usual sycophants will chime in. His fanboys and fangirls will tweet indignantly, the narrative is born, reality manufactured.

Republican leadership, as usual, seems utterly clueless regarding Obama’s long game strategy, and have no long game strategy of their own. I’m not even sure they understand the concept.

It’s not about State.
It’s about 2016,
Beating Hillary.

If it were about getting a good person in as Secretary of State, the backing of Susan Rice by the White House makes no sense. Why expend this much political capital over a civil servant who is, by all accounts, a marginal performer?

The answer, of course, is that it is not about getting a good person in as Secretary of State. It is about succession.

In the 2008 game of Racial Rochambeau, Black Beat Woman. But that will not happen again in 2016. Been there, done that. Woman Beats Black in 2016, which means Hillary will not be derailed by a Black Man again.

However, Black-Woman Beats White-Woman, regardless of the year. So the only way to beat Hillary in the 2016 game of Rock/Paper/Scissors is to find a minority woman who has sufficient credentials and experience to be a credible contender.

Now, the bar or what makes somebody a credible contender is pretty darn low for the Democratic Party. After all, look who they nominated in 2008. But when you start looking around for a Democrat Black Woman with a national reputation, the bench is not deep. Pretty soon you are looking at Congresswomen like Sheila Jackson Lee or Barbara Lee, and they are just not ready for prime time.

So a contender must be manufactured. That is why Susan Rice was plucked from obscurity and placed on the national stage. That is why the White House is so eager to get her installed over at the State Department. They need to make her a credible national contender, because they need somebody to stop Hillary.

Haiku Guy on November 28, 2012 at 12:46 PM

SWalker on November 28, 2012 at 12:28 PM

The stalking horse theory does not rule out the possibility that Rice is bringing her leverage to bear. She isn’t stupid. They all knew the truth, they were willing to do anything to win, and Rice volunteered for that kamikaze mission after Hillary, presumably, declined the honor.

She could well be calling in that chip, and Obama figures its a win-win. He cashes the chip, backs her and looks good to his base. If they blow it by us, she’s in, a happy soldier. If it becomes obvious she can’t win, the chip is cashed and he gets Kerry.

What could go wrong?

Many in the 1 mil Sole Prop made their bucks by working with their hands and brains and building real product, unlike buffet who buys and sells the works of other men.
