Higher taxes do not equal more revenue, example #85902479…
posted at 7:41 pm on November 28, 2012 by Erika Johnsen
Let’s put aside for a moment President Obama and the Democrats’ class-warmongering rhetoric about wanting “millionaires and billionaires” to pay their fair share (I’m pretty sure that dubbing families that make over $250k/year “millionaires” is an over-generalization, but yeah, sure), and forget that the projected revenue from hiking taxes on the wealthy is a laughably insincere, piddling effort at solving our wildly out-of-control binge-spending problem. Let’s just focus on the universally acknowledged wisdom that, when you want less of something, one always-viable option is to put a tax on it.
Exhibit A, via the Telegraph:
In the 2009-10 tax year, more than 16,000 people declared an annual income of more than £1 million to HM Revenue and Customs.
This number fell to just 6,000 after Gordon Brown introduced the new 50p top rate of income tax shortly before the last general election. …
George Osborne, the Chancellor, announced in the Budget earlier this year that the 50p top rate will be reduced to 45p from next April.
Since the announcement, the number of people declaring annual incomes of more than £1 million has risen to 10,000. …
Far from raising funds, it actually cost the UK £7 billion in lost tax revenue.
I.e., wealthy Britons probably invested a lot of resources into either reducing their taxable incomes or simply moving abroad — and no doubt our own dear Democrats would label this rational self-interest as malicious greed or a disdainful lack of patriotism. Whatever they want to call it, they can’t disguise the fact that the threat of more of your money being taken from you means you’re going to look for ways to avoid that fate — and when it starts to get really serious, there’s a disincentive to even try and make that much money in the first place.
Maybe these higher taxes alone might not spell economic doom and recession for the economy, but they certainly don’t encourage it along, and combined with the rest of President Obama’s agenda of more bureaucracy, more regulation and red tape, more costs, more redistribution, and the list goes on… These together are long-term trends for economic decline, and it’s not like ‘nobody could’ve seen this coming’ or anything.
This is the infamous Laffer Curve, and it’s simply the common-sense recognition that you should include changes in taxable income in your calculations when trying to measure the impact of higher or lower tax rates on tax revenues.
…[L]et’s now think about President Obama’s proposed class-warfare tax hike. He wants higher tax rates on investors, entrepreneurs, small business owners and other “rich” taxpayers. And he wants more double taxation of dividends and capital gains. And a higher death tax rate, even higher than the ones imposed by France and Venezuela. …
Those questions are hard to answer. Ask five economists and you’ll get nine answers, but there is compelling evidence that higher tax rates do have a negative impact.

Let’s quash this ‘Blame Benghazi on Budget Cuts’ shit right now…
1. The Senate never voted on nor did Obama sign into law the Ryan Budget; thus, the Republican budget cuts never took effect.
2. Sequestration did not take effect until 6 months after the Benghazi attack and, at the time of the event, very few in Washington expected Sequestration to ever go into effect; thus, it is ludicrous to attempt to connect Benghazi to Sequestration.
3. In response to the question ‘Was there any budget consideration and lack of budget which led you not to increase the number of people in the security force there?’ posed during a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on 10 October 2012, Charlene Lamb, a deputy assistant secretary of state for diplomatic security, answered: ‘No, sir.’
Recall that Lamb is the person, who denied requests from the top diplomatic security officer in Libya to retain a 16-man team of military personnel who had been protecting diplomats. It is only logical that SHE WOULD KNOW.
4. In an email exchange between Diplomatic Security Chief Financial Officer, Robert Baldre, and Assistant Secretary of State, Eric Boswell, on 28 September 2012, Mr Baldre flatly states: ‘I do not feel that we have ever been at a point where we sacrificed security due to a lack of funding…Typically, Congress has provided sufficient funding.’
5. A lack of funding could not have been at issue with regard to the rejection of the request to extend the deployment of the SST, as that team was provided via the Defence Department at no expense to the State Department.
6. The White House and the State Department easily found $70,000 to air ads in Pakistan denouncing the ‘hateful video’ and condemning those who purportedly used it to justify their behaviour.
7. On 11 September 2012, while the Benghazi consulate was inadequately staffed – a finding made by the State Department Accountability Review Board – the American Embassy in the Bahamas had a full contingent from the Marine Embassy Guard.. In fact, a mere 3 weeks earlier, they held a fitness drill and jamboree for the Islanders.
8. The State Department could find the money to fund Secretary Clinton’s ‘U.S. Celebrity Chefs World Tour’ initiative and, four days after it denied a request by a group of Special Forces assigned to protect the American mission in Libya to continue their use of a DC-3 airplane for security operations throughout the country, the State Department authorised the American Embassy in Vienna to purchase a $108,000 electric vehicle charging station for the embassy motor pool’s new Chevrolet Volts. Also, the American Embassy in Cairo could find the money to purchase $38,000′s worth of Barack Obama’s autobiographies to disseminate amongst the locals.
9. While there had been 234 terrorist attacks in Libya in the 16 months preceding the attack on the American Consulate, including 48 in Benghazi alone (including 2 attacks on the American Consulate, 2 attempts on the life of the British Ambassador, and the Red Cross, and every humanitarian post located there), the State Department REFUSED TO INCREASE SECURITY per the request of the Libyan diplomatic mission, including Ambassador Chris Stevens himself, and in fact DECREASED it.
And, the idea that the attack on the Benghazi Consulate was unforeseeable, recall that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was, PERSONALLY, aware of the fact that our Ambassador had to be sneaked into the country on a cargo ship BECAUSE IT WAS SO DANGEROUS.
10. At the time of the attack, the State Department had $2.1 billion on hand and had been granted another $1.9 billion by Congress.

I hadn’t thought of it in those particular terms. The administration has taken great pains in making the other scandals overshadow their complete incompetence about Benghazi. Maam clearly has outdated talking points from wherever these partisan morons get their views of the world.

California voters are stuck on stupid. I know because I live here and the stupidity that takes place here with liberals is just mind boggling. I blame two things: 1986 amnesty and the public education system. These two thing have enabled politicians like boxer and Feinstein to be elected.
irishinfidel on May 14, 2013 at 9:56 PM
Two points.
First it was possible to provide proper security. But when you ignore the facilities requirements for protecting diplomatic personnel that makes things difficult. The one thing that came out of Carney’s lies this week was that the talking points changed Benghazi consulate for Benghazi diplomatic facility because this was essentially a death trap and not the kind of facility I saw in Munich on vacation last year. Munich had a consulate with full anti-terrorism protections. Benghazi’s consulate apparently had a really high wall. This is serious CYA because the State Department violated their own rules.
My second point is this. Why was the United States maintaining a “consulate” in Benghazi anyway? Yes it is the second largest city but there couldn’t have been that much of a need. After the British ambassador’s convoy was attacked, both the Brits and the International Red Cross moved out of Benghazi. Why didn’t the US and why was our top diplomat in an unsafe facility on September 11th in a region where attacks on US embassies were rife? There is either a bigger lie/scandal or State was totally clueless.
Happy Nomad on May 14, 2013 at 9:57 PM
Diana West: “There is more at work here than a foundationally flawed strategy. In its drive to win Islamic hearts and minds, COIN doctrine has become an engine of Islamization inside the U.S. military. To win a Muslim population’s “trust,” U.S. troops are taught deference to Islam — to revere the Quran; not to spit [or pee] toward Mecca (thousands of miles away); and to condone such un- or anti-Western practices as religious supremacism, misogyny, polygamy, pederasty and cruelty to dogs. Our military has even permitted Islamic law to trump the First Amendment to further COIN goals, as when ISAF commander Petraeus publicly condemned an American citizen for exercising his lawful right to freedom of speech to burn a Quran.
This explains why the reports that CIA director David Petraeus went before the House Intelligence Committee in September and blamed a YouTube Muhammad video for the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, sounded so familiar. Whatever his motivation, it was all too easy for Petraeus to make free speech the scapegoat for Islamic violence. But so it goes in COIN-world, where jihad and Shariah (Islamic law) are off the table and the First Amendment is always to blame. If there is a lesson here, it is simple: A leader who will betray the First Amendment will betray anything
