GOP senators: We’re “more disturbed” after meeting with Amb. Rice than we were before

posted at 1:01 pm on November 27, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice has been catching all kinds of flak from Republicans about her Sunday talk show appearances in which it now looks an awful lot like she willfully participated in purposefully misling the American people about the true nature of the 9/11/12 attacks in Benghazi, Libya that resulted in four American deaths. At her own behest, some of her harshest critics — Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Kelly Ayotte — agreed to meet with her and hear her out on Tuesday morning, along with acting CIA Director Michael Morell, at a closed-door briefing. Apparently, her self-defense was unconvincing:

From The Hill:

“Bottom line, I’m more disturbed now than I was before (by) the 16 September explanation about how four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya by Ambassador Rice,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). …

“We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn’t get concerning some of the evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on our consulate,” McCain said. …

Ayotte echoed Graham, saying she was “more troubled today having met with the acting director of the CIA and Ambassador Rice.”

“When you’re in a position where you’re ambassador to the United Nations, you go well beyond unclassified talking points in your daily preparation and responsibilities for that job. And that’s troubling to me as well, why she wouldn’t have asked” more questions.

In a nutshell, it seems like the meeting helped to get to the bottom of approximately nothing, except to confirm that the “spontaneous protest” line that Amb. Rice peddled was very clearly incorrect and we’re no closer to getting the basic answers about who changed the talking points. So, kind of back to square one — as Sen. Graham wondered again, why did she have to definitively say anything about the attacks? Why not just say, ‘We don’t have enough information to be sure, here are the possibilities, and we’ll keep you updated’?

The senators didn’t explicitly say that they were still committed to blocking her potential nomination to Secretary of State, saying that they’d need more information — I’m sure they’d like to leave themselves some wiggle room on that one — but they’re clearly not satisfied with Susan Rice’s side of the story.

Contrary to what some idiot posted, the worst thing about Susan Rice is not that she is black but that a person with her education can and will lie to the American people with a straight face. It is not the color of her skin that is the problem, it is the content of her character. Since when is it racist to point out a character fault or a lie?

Statement by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, November 27, 2012

Today, Acting CIA Director Michael Morell and I met with Senators McCain, Graham, and Ayotte to discuss my September 16th public comments regarding the attack against the U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, and the intelligence assessments that formed the basis for those comments. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss these issues directly and constructively with them.

In the course of the meeting, we explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: there was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi. While, we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case, the intelligence assessment has evolved. We stressed that neither I nor anyone else in the Administration intended to mislead the American people at any stage in this process, and the Administration updated Congress and the American people as our assessments evolved.

The Administration remains committed to working closely with Congress as we thoroughly investigate the terrorist attack in Benghazi and bring to justice the terrorists responsible for the tragic deaths of our colleagues, Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. We also look forward to the findings of the Accountability Review Board and the FBI investigation.

When the stench is so bad that not even Miss Graham and McVain can cover it up, the sh*t is bad.

sesqui is always a fool.

Fwiw, I do get you, at least often. Both sides can go to Hades, and I don’t care what some here think about it.

Schadenfreude on November 27, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Honestly, I think the GOP is barking up the wrong tree here. She was told by the admin what to say…she wouldn’t have had direct knowledge of the intelligence pointing to a terror attack. And even if she was briefed on it and they knew what it was, she can always say that they wanted to confirm that before going public which is why they blamed the video initially. Of course they probably minimized the terror aspect out of purely political concerns, but there’s too much plausible deniability to really make that case.

The WH and State need to be held accountable for decisions before and after the attack. Going after Rice is distracting from that. Why continue to make it about her and what she said when there are far more troubling questions that haven’t been answered?

changer1701 on November 27, 2012 at 1:26 PM

First off, perhaps the BEST thing about Rice is that she is black. Otherwise, how can Obama and the msm make such a divisive issue of it?

Maybe Obama will make a big deal of relenting and nominate instead Rice’s ideological twin, Samantha Power. Hmmmm. Power is, after all, is the author of Responsibility to Protect ( R2P), which got Obama into Libya to begin with, and is the wife of another Obama ideological favorite, Cass Sunstein.

Power (of the 2008 campaign “Hillary is a monster” statement) has a lot of oddball academic views of Israel that Obama finds persuasive. Nominating Power would make the same trio of senators go to a whole level of crackers!

What, no verbaluce? Dave Rywall?

I guess Rywall is slightly coherent once in a while (like the proverbial blind squirrel). But verbaluce is up there with Tommyhawk. They both regularly insult Ed, Mary Katharine, and the other writers for Hot Air. I don’t know how they haven’t been banned yet just for that.

cynicism is self-defeatng, peeps. keep pushing. obama won’t want to come forward to tell the truth. rice will be an open sore if she remans above the radar. bo will drop her after this and kerry will get the nod for sos and sail thru. godd because he’d have no respect as sod.

There’s doing your job and asking the proper questions and then there’s knowingly allowing yourself to be a puppet and mouthpiece. We know what path she took…she doesn’t deserve to ever represent this country.

Condi Rice

plewis on November 27, 2012 at 2:08 PM

It’s what’s known as taking one for the team. In exchange, she gets to be SecState. From her perspective, not a bad deal. She has to listen to some whining for a while, then she gets to jet around the world on our dime and make sure the Pals win at every turn.

Bet John Kerry is pi$$ed.

I don’t mean to insult you, I think you’re confusing challenging and dismissing with ‘insulting’.
But regardless, I’m sure they have thicker skin than you suggest.
(Which is kind of insulting?)

Why was that story crazy. Every intel agency on the planet believed this.

So you want to excuse her statements to the American public because she parroted false intelligence? Seems fair.

You are aware that the quote button is for quoting someone else, right?

RFOL.

The more we talk about Rice, the longer it takes for anyone to simply ask Obama where he was, what he saw, what orders he gave, what was done in response to those orders, and by whom.

Inquiring minds want to know. Well, some inquiring minds.

If you use Fast and Furious as an example, then they will do nothing. This is all for the record. None of the Senators we are hearing from care about this country or who Secretary of State is.
