GOP senators: We’re “more disturbed” after meeting with Amb. Rice than we were before

posted at 1:01 pm on November 27, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice has been catching all kinds of flak from Republicans about her Sunday talk show appearances in which it now looks an awful lot like she willfully participated in purposefully misling the American people about the true nature of the 9/11/12 attacks in Benghazi, Libya that resulted in four American deaths. At her own behest, some of her harshest critics — Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Kelly Ayotte — agreed to meet with her and hear her out on Tuesday morning, along with acting CIA Director Michael Morell, at a closed-door briefing. Apparently, her self-defense was unconvincing:

From The Hill:

“Bottom line, I’m more disturbed now than I was before (by) the 16 September explanation about how four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya by Ambassador Rice,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). …

“We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn’t get concerning some of the evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on our consulate,” McCain said. …

Ayotte echoed Graham, saying she was “more troubled today having met with the acting director of the CIA and Ambassador Rice.”

“When you’re in a position where you’re ambassador to the United Nations, you go well beyond unclassified talking points in your daily preparation and responsibilities for that job. And that’s troubling to me as well, why she wouldn’t have asked” more questions.

In a nutshell, it seems like the meeting helped to get to the bottom of approximately nothing, except to confirm that the “spontaneous protest” line that Amb. Rice peddled was very clearly incorrect and we’re no closer to getting the basic answers about who changed the talking points. So, kind of back to square one — as Sen. Graham wondered again, why did she have to definitively say anything about the attacks? Why not just say, ‘We don’t have enough information to be sure, here are the possibilities, and we’ll keep you updated’?

The senators didn’t explicitly say that they were still committed to blocking her potential nomination to Secretary of State, saying that they’d need more information — I’m sure they’d like to leave themselves some wiggle room on that one — but they’re clearly not satisfied with Susan Rice’s side of the story.

The big question that still needs to be answered is why our United Nations Ambassador was deliberately and repeatedly paraded about as the mouthpiece of our State Dept. after an attack on U.S. soil where 4 Americans were murdered.

The more we talk about Rice, the longer it takes for anyone to simply ask Obama where he was, what he saw, what orders he gave, what was done in response to those orders, and by whom.

Inquiring minds want to know. Well, some inquiring minds.

That’s right, and the Senators know that too. They could go after Administration, but choose to going over old news.

Nutstuyu on November 27, 2012 at 2:26 PM

This is such a stupid freakin’ diversion, it’s ridiculous. The fact that Susan Rice went on Sunday morning television with a bunch of talking points designed to mask the true nature of the attack is the least of the issues. First of all, who gave her the talking points? Who deleted the reference to Al Qaeda in the intelligence reports? More importantly, however, who gave the stand down order? Who denied the request for additional security? And why did Petraeus tell one story before he stepped down, and another afterward? Those are the questions that I’d like answers to. Susan Rice is not the issue.

This is, without much doubt, the most inspiring threads I have ever read!

Then we have dummies like you talking about the ramp up to the Iraq war.

For the record, there was a sequence of events and negotiation.

A ton of evidence was presented to the congress.

If you bother to read the accounts of the time (and be the first liberal to do so) Saddam didn’t open the sites to inspection in anything like a forthcoming manner.

THAT would have been enough for a POTUS who cared about his people and had just seen about 3,000 killed in a fiery attack on a major population center by a stealthy enemy.

The only way any right winger deserves censure for Iraq or Libya is failing to take the truth into battle in the most forceful way possible.

The shield and sword were dropped!

Bush failed to hold the shield firmly and high!

Romney failed to lift the sword and take up the fight!

This is purloined from a heroic tome Winston Churchill and I love.

In the course of the meeting, we explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: there was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi. While, we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case, the intelligence assessment has evolved. We stressed that neither I nor anyone else in the Administration intended to mislead the American people at any stage in this process, and the Administration updated Congress and the American people as our assessments evolved.

This just doesn’t square with what Obama said at the UN and on The View.

My issue is why Susan Rice in the first place ? This was not her sand box to be playing in. She was like a duck out of water.
Those invested in the situation were DNI Clapper, DCI Patreus and SofS Clinton. Those three were closely and directly involved with what was transpiring. Why were they missing from the Sunday shows?
While Amb. Rice may have been hanging around on the perifary, she was not directly involved.
I believe she was put out there to allow some plausable deniability should the situation “evolve” just as it did. She could get away with it. Not so with DNI, DCI and SofS.

Should you put up a disclaimer before the program that all statements from the Obama Administration will ALWAYS be assumed to be true? If you are not bothered with a blatant lie from a representative of the power throne sitting in the exact same chair that I find myself sitting at right now, then am I given a pass to lie to you today, also? My hunch is that McCain is making a grand-standing use of this issue — which is disgusting usery, despite it revealing Rice and OBama to be responsible — so McCain and his group can then step in and do things that the Right despises, like amnesty for illegals.

McCain is known to exploit these “national security” and/or Military issues to try and throw attention of or, rather, to justify his wonky efforts in pursuing Leftwing goals.

I am glad SOMEONE in Congress is pursuing the Benghazi issue if not crimes involved but with McCain doing it, I sense an additional dishonesty involved.

Why not just say, ‘We don’t have enough information to be sure, here are the possibilities, and we’ll keep you updated’?

Because that might have created some doubt in the minds of the electorate about the claim President Rambo, Bin Laden Slayer, had very publicly and very loudly made just the week before that he had practically destroyed Al Qaeda, and about the success of his failed Libyan policy, and about the perception that his admin knows what the hell they are doing in the ME.

Better to blame it all on “spontaneous protests” incited by some obscure independent low budget film maker, ignoring the fact it all happened on the anniversary of 9/11. Because Dear Leader’s admin and his buddies in the MSM clearly think enough of the electorate is stupid enough to buy it and trust an admin and MSM that obviously thinks they are gullible morons. It was shaky and it perturbed others in the administration.

Powell had been given the full range of intel on Saddam, WMD was a piece of that range of intel and it was never sold as a done deal. Yet he got up in front of the UN and made 95% of the case for the war base on WMD.

Tony Blair went one step further and said the WMD was as close to fact as it gets. Then he made up some bogus BS about missles-borne WMD being able to hit the UK with 45 minutes notice…

So in their way, they both gave the Lefitsts and the Ronulans the ammunition to collude with the anti-war folks who suddenly went very quiet after the coronation of the Dog Dining Dauphin.

Hey, don’t crush his ego!

Pay no attention to the mean commenter, plewis. Good job, little buddy.

It’s a shame how the White House is using Ambassador Rice as a sacrificial lamb to protect Obama.

mixplix on November 27, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Why do the Republicans always send out McCain and his little buddy to address practically every issue? If these two are the best they have then it’s literally hopeless.

But never shallow.

Finally, President Barack Hussein Obama steps forward to end the whole matter by clearly pointing his finger at the American people and snarl: “You can’t handle the truth.” Matter ended.

Stalking horse, anyone?

Say hello to John “Winter Soldier” Kerry.

GOP is wasting it’s ammo, here, to mix metaphors. But it’s not like they’ve ever been outplayed by the Dems before…

The Resolute Desk on November 27, 2012 at 9:55 PM

We’ll find out that everyone, the president, the secretary of state, the ambassador, et al have been lying and NO ONE will care. The sheeple have gone back to their recreations.

Mojave Mark on November 28, 2012 at 7:33 AM

She couldn’t have been more wrong if she had tried to tell America some crazy story like Iraq had weapons of mass destruction including nuclear weapons to get us to invade. Now she wants to be Secretary of State. That’s wacky talk!

plewis on November 27, 2012 at 2:00 PM

I hate to break this to you, dimwit, but WMDs were found in Iraq. See wikileaks.

Can we just stop this nonsense?

Senators McCain, Ayotte, et.al… The American people don’t care. They don’t care about dead ambassadors, or brave navy seals, they don’t care about black flags over our burning embassies. They don’t care about transparently bogus “film” rationales, or an administration that lies through its teeth.

And that’s just Benghazi. I could go on about Fast & Furious, a racially politicized DoJ, an unpopular takeover of healthcare, the nationalization of our auto industry, etc. The American people looked at all of this and more on 11/6 and said “y’know… four more years of this sounds pretty good.”

The reason is because they care about their union jobs, their “free” phones, “free” birth control, pensions, food stamps, EBT payments, “free” healthcare, & so forth.

We could always ask the fine people of this once-great nation to dig in and think critically, but that would mean they’d have to take time out from the petty & trivial banalities that entertain & distract them.

So I say again: can we just stop this nonsense? At this point the GOP is just posturing. It would be more useful to simply say that Obama & his advisors left our embassy unprotected despite warnings, and then did nothing while they watched four Americans die at the hands of 7th-Century Death Cultists, and then lied to the American people about it. Conclude your press conference by pointing out that this will come to nothing because Americans care more about their “free shit” than they do about national security. Then go home for Christmas.

SAMinVA on November 28, 2012 at 8:06 AM

Ms. Rice has given her answers. Dir. Clapper has taken responsibility for changing talking points, although, he had no valid reason to do so. Is it back to you, Clapper, or has the stage been set for the coming theater of Rice’s nomination well enough? I’d say pass the popcorn at this point, but with the drought and all, we probably won’t even have that staple in the pantry.

Kissmygrits on November 28, 2012 at 8:57 AM

True to form for all those self-centered pols in DC, it has been two months since our ambassador was murdered and we STILL don’t know what happened. All they can do is bitch about Rice, when they should be asking who the H let those people die…… Geez, government for the people and by the people is gone. God Save America.

ultracon on November 28, 2012 at 10:52 AM

The big question that still needs to be answered is why our United Nations Ambassador was deliberately and repeatedly paraded about as the mouthpiece of our State Dept. after an attack on U.S. soil where 4 Americans were murdered.

locomotivebreath1901

Not all that complicated, really ….

Obama wants to nominate her for Sec State. Putting her out there on behalf of the Administration was all about raising her profile as a mouthpiece … er, spokesman … person … whatever.

BD57 on November 28, 2012 at 11:13 PM

But that strategy probably backfired. Republican Senators know she lied on national TV, and will filibuster her nomination if they have the cojones. Susan Rice will never be Secretary of State, and Obama will be stuck with Hillary Clinton for four more years, if Hillary still wants the job.

The real purpose of Obama sending Rice on the talk shows was so that We the People are stuck with Obama for four more years.
