Cairo protests reach US Embassy while Muslim Brotherhood announces counterprotests

posted at 3:31 pm on November 25, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the suddenly-embattled president of Egypt tried telling his nation that despite grabbing more power than his immediate predecessor Hosni Mubarak ever had, he couldn’t possibly oppress anyone.  Today, Egyptians responded to Mohamed Morsi’s insistent humility with even more protests than before, protests that have now washed up all the way to the gates of the US Embassy.  As our embassy closes for business today, Morsi’s allies in the Muslim Brotherhood announced plans to produce a “million-man” counterprotest that will almost certainly put pressure on the Egyptian military to make a decision about their immediate and long-term future:

A wave of fresh clashes erupted in Egypt on Sunday as resentment over the president’s new powers and support for him continue to divide the country.

The latest clashes broke out between protesters and security forces on the outskirts of Tahrir Square, in Cairo, Egypt’s state-run Nile TV reported.

The unrest may be a prelude to dueling demonstrations scheduled for later this week. …

Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood, the movement Morsy once led, has said it will stage nationwide demonstrations starting Sunday to back the president’s plans. It also announced a “Million Man” demonstration Tuesday at Abdeen Square in Cairo to support Morsy.

That should end well, no?  After all, the Muslim Brotherhood has been all about power sharing and multilateral democracy, right?  Putting thousands of Morsi supporters in the streets against the thousands of protesters against his power grab is a recipe for either a violent revolution, or a violent suppression of one.

The difference in that equation is the Egyptian military, which three months ago was an independent player in this drama.  Over the summer, though, Morsi moved to consolidate his power in the military, which apparently gave him the confidence to declare himself a “temporary” dictator — and so far, the army hasn’t signaled an objection to it.  This could get very ugly if they change sides … or if they don’t.

The business community in Egypt apparently thinks so, too:

Sunday also marked the first day trading resumed on the Egyptian stock market since Morsy’s power consolidation.

By midday local time, stocks had plunged by about 10%.

Even that may be too optimistic.

Workers at the US Embassy in Cairo must be feeling quietly confident that they’ll be OK.

All Presidents stack the Pentagon deck. This regularly results in the over promoting of highly unsuitable people like Generals Wesley Clark and yes Colin Powell. And the politics filters all the way down.

Well, any normal individual understands that as true but liberalism is a psychosis . O’bomber even keeps the war going along the Mexican border with projects like “fast and furious” and there is still no sign of ending it. He is a Communist without question promoting the Communist Manifesto without calling it so. How shrewd he is in America. His cult of personality mesmerizes those who cannot go beyond their ignorance. They will continue to follow him like those fools who still praise Lenin and Stalin in Russia. Obama’s fools and Stalin’s fools share the same drink of illusion.

i’m starting to are less and less about this. Maybe it the neo-isolationism that i’m beginning to feel…or maybe in the scope of things, this just isn’t that important.

But seriously, what do we know? 1. the MB probably has 60 percent support, 2. another 20 percent stands with the more islamist group(s)

so my gut feeling is this is just a fight from the remnants of the former regime…and assorted communists and liberals.

Osama: no particular gains for The Islamic Project of World Domination.

Obama: major successes for The Islamic Project of World Domination.

SEE: The illusory “Arab Spring” [AKA Islamic Winter]. Iraq quietly ceded into Iran’s sphere of influence. Iran allowed to go nuclear. Afghanistan quietly ceded back to the Taliban. Ally Mubarak overthrown and replaced by Islamic jihadists. De facto ally Khadaffy overthrown and replaced by chaos and Islamic jihadists roaming freely to kill our Ambassador. Yemen in chaos after ally Saleh forced from power. North Africa in chaos with jihadists in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco jockeying for power. Central Africa in chaos with Islamist terrorists killing at will. Support for jihadists to overthrow a secular despot in Syria.

Who was the real problem here?

You know, I don’t think that this is Russian disinformation or propaganda. Obysmal has done much damage to the US in terms of our national security and our economy. However, let’s not forget that Russia is also jockeying for a power position in the ME. There are worldwide shakeups going on to establish who will be the world’s superpowers.

Obama has ceded to the Muslims and their expansion of the caliphate. He is also selling us short “to put us in our place.”

onlineanalyst on November 25, 2012 at 6:06 PM

Allow me to repeat this comment and link because it ties in to my 6:06 PM point.

This lengthy analysis offers a credible explanation of the shakeups in the world order. Much of this occurred as a result of post-WW II circumstances. The writer posits that the anti-Western attitude in the ME is not, contrary to the accepted narrative, a revolt against colonialism but instead a crafted effort motivated by Soviet expansionism.

The thinking behind this theory makes sense, given who we see as allies in the ME region. Our own “fellow travelers” sympathize with the Communist ideology at any rate.

http://berlinski.com/node/176

As far as Bill Kristol is concerned, he is not a conservative. He sees every issue in terms of “spreading democracy” through bullets. We should heed Gov. Perry’s advice and refuse to give monetary aid until a nation demonstrates that it is not our enemy.

onlineanalyst on November 25, 2012 at 6:12 PM

onlineanalyst on November 25, 2012 at 6:06 PM

The subject is Byzantine in its confusion and complexity.

I mentioned the doubts people expressed to me about our president when I visited Russia. Based on the love of the rest of the world for him, people thought it was a conservative lying.

As you said, this may reflect Russian frustration with President Obama’s foreign policy as it thwarts them. Pray that Russia does not go fishing in the Mideast. Backing a power grab by someone like Morsi is a cheap way to acquire a client state.

BTW, why do we only mention the $1.6 Billion in aid to Egypt?

They also rolled over a $4.8 Billion loan 22 or 24 months ago from the IMF and there are other things….

We’re blowing money right and left, all to spread the caliphate in the name of Obysmal’s definition of democracy. The Russians are probably ticked that they need to spend funds and weapons in these proxy wars in order to have their piece of the ME pie to control the oil and the seas. China will be laughing all the way to the bank when we go bankrupt and implode. One of the three– the Russians, the Chinese, or the Muslims– is going to be the winner takes all.
