A new “Golden Age” in America under Obama!

posted at 8:31 am on November 24, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

The future in America may just be so bright that you’ll have to wear shades. And who will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of this happy news? President Barack Obama, at least according to historian, author and former adviser to the McCain campaign, Niall Ferguson. In an interview this week, he describes what may be a coming “golden age” for the United States and how that could only go to benefit the President.

But now an unlikely champion for U.S. growth under the Obama administration has emerged — a former adviser to a Republican Party presidential candidate and Harvard history professor, Niall Ferguson, who says America could actually be heading toward a new economic “golden age.”

And it has nothing to do with Washington and everything to do with energy.

What Ferguson is talking about is the ongoing surge in natural gas and oil production in the United States, specifically through the development of shale oil resources using fracking. As has been reported many times, production is up and continues to rise, with the US set to eclipse Saudi Arabia as the world’s top energy producer in the next decade. This, as he explains, will not only create jobs in the energy industry, but low cost supplies will also bring back manufacturing here at home as production costs fall and labor costs stabilize in comparison to China. And over the long run, Ferguson is also confident that this strengthens the dollar.

But why would he think this benefits Obama? Niall is hardly a fan of the current administration. Not only was he a McCain adviser, but he also penned a widely touted editorial this summer called, “Hit the road, Barack.” The author explains:

For the recently reelected U.S. president though, the energy boom looks like it could provide a welcome tailwind for his second term.

It’s something that Ferguson acknowledges — though one suspects through gritted teeth.

As a supporter of Mitt Romney he penned a controversial pre-election cover story in Newsweek headlined “Hit the Road, Barack,” which was highly critical of the president’s first term.

He concedes the irony that the president will now be the beneficiary of the “good times that lie ahead.”

So, as it usually goes in energy discussions, it appears that the free market is poised to see the oil and natural gas industries surging, not because of Barack Obama, but in spite of him. Washington continues to close off public lands to energy exploration leasing and festoon an ever expanding list of oppressive regulations on energy producers, and yet the market finds a way to meet demand. And if it manages to succeed while Obama’s hand is still on the tiller, he gets credit for leading the nation into this new golden era.

There’s really just no justice, is there? Here’s the video of the interview so you can catch the entire thing in context.

Golden Age in the sense that everyone is buying gold.

This will not to matter to California as we just implemented new carbon taxes. Unless these fossile fuels can be used to make energy without burning it, then a boom is unlikely in the golden state.

The assumption seems to be that the energy boom will happen in spite of Obama, in spite of his EPA regulating fracking into oblivion. I’m not so optimistic.

ctmom on November 24, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Don’t worry, Niall, Big Government has regulatory power to stop this.

Just you watch them.

It isn’t a forecast, it is all they do and best to get those rose tinted glasses off that see a golden age. Anyone who loved humanity and sought prosperity for all would not have such regulatory regimes as are now in place, and more are coming down the pike… that is why they were formed, it is what they do and there is no greater want of power from on high save from the petty tyrants on low.

If you want that Golden Age then all of this government’s overhead and authority over these things must go and be returned to the accountable tyrants locally. Those we can deal with. The unaccountable ones on high? Not so much.

Not happening. But the media will say it is while we all begin to starve.
Like I saw those reports right after the election about how the US would soon be energy independent. I’m thinking.. where did that suddenly come from? Pure propaganda. It just isn’t going to happen. No way. But sure.. the media will be telling us this. “We’re in a new golden age. We’re now energy independent. Our economy has never been stronger. We’ve never been more free.”

All the while prices will be skyrocketing. More people will be suffering. More people will be unemployed. More people will be homeless. More crime. More debt. More terrorism. More regulations. More government.
But when you turn on the TV.. all you will hear is how wonderful it is in our new golden age of Obama. Chris Matthews is not going to suddenly start telling the truth. They are invested fully.

Doesn’t anyone remember how it was in the old soviet Union. The new leader always blamed all of their problems on the old leader. When the new leader rose to power they always tore down the statues of the old leader and built new statues of the new leader. And Pravda reported how wonderful things were now under the new leader. The grain harvest was greater. People were happier. The new 5 year plans were more wonderful. And when he died or was overthrown, the cycle would begin again.

This is basic propaganda 101. But we’ve forgotten it and our young were never taught it.
This is why they want death panels. To get rid of the people like me. The older ones who remember.

One small problem with this new “golden age”. If this economic boom is happening on private lands, wouldn’t that limit it to only a handful of states in which those lands are located? Even the cheaper energy costs could be undone by Obama’s war on coal. And that’s to say nothing of our pending fiscal insolvency and the destructive effects of Obamacare. At best, this energy boom could prop up things for a little while longer.

We must each stand as a veritable Gandalf on the bridge of Khazad-dûm, refusing to let the Balrog pass, the Balrog that is the very concept that Dear Leader should get any credit for the economic improvement that happens despite his administration’s best efforts to ruin the energy industry in this country. (Cue the swelling, triumphal music) If we can win this battle, if we can leave this concept devastated on the side of the mountain, we can surely rise up reborn, stronger and more powerful than ever before, ready to face our ultimate foe, world progressivism. That must be our quest, that must be our goal – my fellow citizens of Middle-Right Earth, refuse to join with Soros Sauron, stay the course, fight the fight! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields unfracked rock layers, when the age of oil comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!

On topic, the EPA is already trying to stop fracking in PA. They are going to shut down 5 coal fired power plants in my region, causing my electricity costs to “necessarily skyrocket” from about $50 a month to $400 or so. This boom would have to be pretty darn big to offset everything that is going to get worse under Obama.

Development east of the Rockies is on private land; it’s the mountain states that are on the public land that the government controls The drilling activity in New Mexico – where most of the oil and gas lines under Bureau of Land Management areas in the southeastern portion of the state – has barely budget over the past six years in terms of rig activity, while the same areas just across the border, on private lands in Texas, have seen the number of drilling rigs there quadruple during the same time span.

Texas is always going to drill, and I suspect South Dakota isn’t going to give up their new-found shale oil as gas bonus, either. The more interesting thing is going to be as time goes on what happens in ‘soft’ Blue State drilling areas like Ohio and Pennsylvania, where Obama faces a question of allowing the possible boom from shale drilling to continue or ticking off his environmental base. Andrew Cuomo in New York is kicking the can down the road for as long as he can on shale gas drilling — the state’s economy certainly can use the billions is would get from it, but being a ‘hard’ Blue state, the enviros carry enough clout, especially downstate, so that they can keep the drilling and and keep the upstate areas in the economic doldrums (not that it matters to a greenie in New York City — to them Upstate is only there to allow downstaters an occasional trip to the countryside).

The way it’s like to end up is a handful of Red States end up providing the bulk of the new drilling activity, while a few Blue States that could turn Red are torn between their liberal and conservative factions over expanding shale drilling. And Obama will be perfectly happy to led the Red States drill themselves out so his Blue State voters can continue to feel good about themselves and their environmental moral superiority, as they keep on adding more fairy dust-powered electronic gadgets and other household items to their own personal inventories.

This energy boom is a little over hyped. Besides the sad legacy that if there is a bright spot anywhere in the economy, this administration drops a cow pie on it, the quick decline of fracked wells demands capital input beyond what current prices can support. I have read that natural gas will have to go up toward an $8 per mcf price to keep the needed capital inflowing. Shale Oil is not even competitive yet and needs more investment too. Then there is the danger that the anti-fossil fuel central planning bureaucrats at the EPA will essentially ban fracking altogether or more subtly just delay permits. We haven’t even approved the pipeline for Candadian tar sand oil yet. There is alot this administration can do to prevent an energy based prosperity.

Gonna be hard to foster a “golden age” these days…have you seen the price of gold lately?

A golden age based on energy?

Really?

The executives over at Solyndra, among others, certainly had their own private golden age for a short time, not that long ago.

What is this guy smoking, anyway?

Back to golden ages…for a moment.

Seriously, every fascist who has risen to power over the past couple centuries has promised what, exactly?

Mass killings? Disenfranchisement of huge segments of the population? Widespread impoverishment of the people? Unlimited government power to destroy the lives of private citizens? Expensive and expansive wars?

Not at all. Most all of them promised that this time the nation would belong to the “people” and that injustice would be quashed at every turn, where there is misery, government will be there, where there is hunger, government will be there, where there is ignorance government will step in to the rescue…in effect, a “golden age” would descend upon the people and happiness, social justice, and prosperity would burst forth from the ground as an unstoppable wellspring of national rejuvenation.

A few of these lasted for but a few years, some a bit longer, and one was touted to becoming a thousand year reign…the longest lasted about 75 years, but only after millions had died and the potential for individual greatness and achievement had been beaten into the ground with truncheons and clubs, or dispersed in gulags and konzlagers, and was soothed by practically free vodka and a giant social safety net…which was easily overwhelmed and broke.

Don’t know what sort of golden age Obama has planned for us, but top-down golden ages have never ever worked well, if at all.

This is the golden age all of us would do well to note, and prepare for.

When there is the sound of screeching brakes, slamming car doors, rapid footfalls on the sidewalk and that heavy-handed knock on the door, at two in the morning, it’ll already be too late.

[FYI: On a lot of meds, at home, presently, will be heading back for more medical stuff on Monday. Overall prognosis looks good...just not out of the woods quite yet. Thank you for all your good thoughts and prayers. Never underestimate the efficacy of both.]

“For the Lord would say unto His people, This day have I unleashed a power against America that will quickly upend her and knock her off her feet. I have set My Hand against her and have determined a ruinous judgment for her. Her stagnating economy and her blighted people will not recover but will be swept away to destruction. I have cast all her hopes away and have set her down in the dust. I am making her rush to her destruction, for this thing must be done and must be settled. I cannot abide her any more.”

I read from the Leftmedia how it’s deemed that human beings are “evolving” or gaining in intelligence and functionality…

I DISAGREE WITH THAT.

I THINK that the burgeoning technology tools that have become so easily obtainable and used throughout human societies has encouraged a LOSS of individual capability.

That we are, indeed, already in a “dark age” or darker age of sorts from where our species once began advancing. That the ease and availability of our current spree into personal computing, technology and all this “information” so easily available has begun a detrimental downgrade of individual aptitude and ability — people now rely on technology and ready information such that there’s no longer any need for individuals to “go mine it” or “find their own way”.

So individual ability — including ability to discriminate and reason, ability to seek out and develope — has begun a downgrade.

One can look around even our “advanced civilization” (so-called) here and in Europe and Asia locales and see how desperate and desperately strange so many people are behaving and look at the rise of dictators in so many areas for proof of how degenerated are so many person’s ability to function competitively if at all.

So what I think is, we are, indeed, already in a Dark Age. We’re “communicating” like crazy but the content — the message, what’s being advanced — has degenerated into something akin to whooping calls and body scratches, however dressed up in pretty colors and seen on fancy screens.

I think human beings are devolving, is what I think.

Whatever gains the industry makes in natural gas and oil, shale oil and fracking or anything else, Obamuh’s oppressive and suppressive policies, rules and regs will quash it all. He will not allow that to happen and therein lies his total stupidity bcuz it’s the only thing that could make him go down in history as anything other than the absolute a hole that he is.

If it were up to some around here, we would still be riding in around in a horse and buggy. And, lighting your home with oil lamps and candles.

Mention anything about technology and they start spitting.

I think Jazz does a fine job with their posts and if someone doesn’t like them I guess they’re free to criticize, but they’re also free to go somewhere else.

More like a fecal brown age.

With those that don’t work for the public sector or unions move toward mud huts and open sewers just like the the wandering kenyan sperm donor that blessed us with his offspring.

In 1860 36 black freeman owned 315 slaves. http://slaverebellion.org
In 2012 Barack Obama owns Rice, Holder and how many others?

I could see this if/when Obama controls the refineries through regulation, etc. and then in a stroke of magnanimous magnificence ‘reversing’ himself somewhat to allow cheaper gas and oil. The lapdog media will of course herald the genius of the One and the half of the country that voted for this jerk will eat it up. Thus insuring his legacy as our greatest emperor, er, president. Instant legend born of smoke and mirrors.
