Quotes of the day

Kerry, a prominent senator for 28 years, would sail through his Senate confirmation hearings. Rice would be pinned down not just by Benghazi but by some of her past statements, in particular these two: In 1994, when she served on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council, she reportedly asked about the possibility of intervening in Rwanda: “If we use the word ’genocide’ and are seen as doing nothing, what will be the effect on the November election?”

In 2011, as European countries were pushing for a UN Security Council resolution creating a no-fly zone over Libya, she reportedly told the France’s UN ambassador, Gerard Araud, that the U.S. wouldn’t be pulled into France’s war and she disparaged the conflict with an obscenity. Dredging up the latter incident is especially unfair, considering that Rice joined Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the National Security Council official Samantha Power to push the men in the administration to intervene in Libya. Still, Kerry’s colleagues wouldn’t hesitate to use any ammunition on hand against Rice.

Kerry would be much-better received than Rice not just in the Senate but in the rest of the world — which should be more than a little relevant in this decision.

Rice was aiming to please the White House in a high-profile audition. If she’s nominated, Republicans shouldn’t let the ritualistic cries of racism scare them off of holding her accountable. On the other hand, they shouldn’t get distracted from more important questions involving the president himself.

Was he apprised of prior attacks on the consulate, and what did he do with that information? When did he get the accurate account of the attack from the intelligence agencies? What did he do when he learned of the hours-long attack, and what orders did he give to help the besieged Americans?

We know in great detail the president’s involvement in the Osama bin Laden raid. But Benghazi has been a closed book. If the White House had a good story to tell, presumably the New York Times already would have reported the details in a 5,000-word front-page article built on leaks by anonymous administration officials.

Say this for Susan Rice: She would be a secretary of state worthy of this administration.

***

Republicans claim that Ms. Rice “propagated a falsehood” that the attacks were connected to an anti-Islam YouTube video. How then to explain the contemporaneous reports from Western news organizations quoting people at the burning consulate saying that they were angry about the video?

The oddity of the Republican response to what happened in Benghazi is partly this focus on half-baked conspiracy theories rather than on the real evidence of failures by the State Department, Pentagon and CIA in protecting the Benghazi mission. What’s even stranger is the singling out of Ms. Rice, a Rhodes scholar and seasoned policymaker who, whatever her failings, is no one’s fool.

Could it be, as members of the Congressional Black Caucus are charging, that the signatories of the letter are targeting Ms. Rice because she is an African American woman? The signatories deny that, and we can’t know their hearts. What we do know is that more than 80 of the signatories are white males, and nearly half are from states of the former Confederacy. You’d think that before launching their broadside, members of Congress would have taken care not to propagate any falsehoods of their own.

***

Oh, and when it comes to anything the media deems racialist or genderific, can we find someone other than old white guys to lay out our case? Why isn’t Condi Rice making the case against Susan Rice? Where’s Susana Martinez? The GOP is flush with women and minorities. Let’s get them prepped for battle and get them out there. We can kill these racist/sexist memes simply by showing up. Optics do matter.

The GOP must stop letting us down like this. We can’t change the media; we can’t make the media do their jobs honestly, and we certainly can’t assume that the media’s ever going to do the right thing.

We can’t lose the Susan Rice debate on the facts. The facts are on our side. The same goes for Libya. But unless and until we’re fully prepared on the facts and willing to then take the debate directly to the media, we’ll keep losing the game, because we drop too many easy pop-ups.

***

Never mind that Republicans haven’t had a white secretary of state since Lawrence Eagleburger concluded his term two decades ago. Never mind that Republicans appointed the first black secretary of state ever (Colin Powell) and the first black female secretary of state ever (Condoleezza Rice, arguably the star of the GOP convention in August). Also, never mind that Rice’s handling of Benghazi — and several other matters — can quite defensibly be dubbed incompetent.

That doesn’t stop Democrats or liberal pundits from crying racism…

Any serious attempt by the GOP to win black votes won’t involve Republicans copycatting liberal policies. It will require going over the heads of the black and white liberal slanderers to offer a sincere alternative to failed liberal policies on schools, poverty, crime, etc. The more effective that effort, the more the GOP will be called racist.

More distractions from the fact that the Butcher of Benghazi is supplying arms to Al-Qaeda & Assoc’s, through Turkish Ships. The Treason is what is attempting to be covered with this & the Petreaus BS. The Betrayal of the Benghazi 4, by the Order to “Stand Down”, When several Military units were already preparing to intervene in the terrorist attack, taking place at the Compound in Benghazi. The Traitor-in-chief’s, continued lies about a youtube video & a Gen’s indiscretions, before an election, shows the total lack of character required to Betray your country & the Military, you were duty bound to defend! Their Blood is also on the hands of the complicit media! These “Ideological Wanna Be’s”, have sold their “profession”(If it can be called that anymore?), to the same failed ideology of the Euro-Socialist Democracy. Now we see if America remembers that, sometimes, you have to fight for your Freedom! My fight will continue to be with the Obama Enemy media & the Right-Wing pseudo-intellectual(ALA the Bill O’Reilly’s of the right), Wanna Be’s, trying to kiss up to the left as if they had any credibility. Arrogance serves no purpose in the Politics that serves the people of a well governed Country.

I think the direct comparison/contrast of Benghazi vs. Captain Kickass’ gutsy call is something that should be brought up over, over, and over. It is a very effective way to show that the Administration is covering up. Kind of a body language thing.

I’d like to see the statistics on rear-end collisions at lights with redlight cameras. My bet is that they are way above non-light intersections. Thing is, somebody shaving 4/10 second off the yellow light does not cause red-light running accidents. It’s the idiot who goes through the intersection 1 or 2 seconds after it’s already turned that causes accidents. This is what happens when you do letter of the law enforcement.

Link: Rice’s miserable record

She has a habit of being absent, especially when her presence would be needed to defend Israel or cast a vote in Israel’s favor. She also skipped out on Netanyahu’s recent speech to the U.N. General Assembly. Yeah, she’s definitely perfect for this administration.

OT: The commenters who wanted to hear a review on the Taurus Judge here it is.

Mrs. Hawkdriver (not her real name) and I took the pistols to the property today to do some shooting and get her familiar with the Judge.

We both liked the multiple type rounds capability. She was shooting two bird shot, a PDX1 round and then finished the cylinder with two 45 rounds. (five round capability) (The Smith and Wesson equivalent, the Governor, holds six)

The recoil with the 410 rounds is the most she had to deal with. No real different between the bird shot and personal defense ammo. She was surprised how little kick the 45s had after the 410 shells. But it’s a great concept for quickly hitting with two incapacitating rounds and then if needed three serious deadly force rounds. (Someone might say if you’re going to shoot, shoot to kill. I got it. But that bird shot will FYU and Mrs. Hawkdriver wanted to be able to shoot accurately from a distant and if an attacker was able to continue forward, the ammo becomes more deadly at “hard to miss” proximity.

The pistol itself has a very smooth single and double action. The sights are very straight forward and high visibility. Only complaint I had was the 410 rounds are not as easy to eject as the 45 rounds because of their length. The expended rounds near the pistol body when you rotate the cylinder out actual get stopped by the body and rubber hand grip. Not a problem at all with the 45 rounds.

Mrs Hawkdriver gives it two thumbs up.

Iran accuses U.S. Navy of “illegal” acts in Gulf
************************************************

Iran is accusing the U.S. Navy of carrying out “illegal and provocative acts” in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.

In identical letters to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council, Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee said the Navy repeatedly violated the country’s airspace.

He cited flights over the coastal areas of Bushehr on seven occasions in October and most recently a U.S. drone flight on Nov. 1 which disregarded all radio warnings and penetrated Iranian airspace.

The letters, circulated Friday, urged Ban to warn the U.S. “against the continuation of acts in violation of international law and of the adverse consequences of any provocative and dangerous acts for which the United States government would be held responsible.”

Middle East nuclear talks will not occur next month: U.S.

WASHINGTON | Fri Nov 23, 2012 10:07pm EST
******************************************

(Reuters) – Talks planned for next month on banning nuclear weapons in the Middle East will not take place, the United States said on Friday, a development likely to anger Arab states but please Israel.

The State Department announced that the mid-December conference on creating a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, or WMD, would not occur and did not make clear when, or whether, it would take place.

Earlier this month, diplomats told Reuters that the talks were likely to be postponed, rather than canceled outright.

“As a co-sponsor of the proposed conference … the United States regrets to announce that the conference cannot be convened because of present conditions in the Middle East and the fact that states in the region have not reached agreement on acceptable conditions for a conference,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

Nuland said that “a deep conceptual gap persists in the region” on how to handle regional security and arms control, adding that “outside states cannot impose a process on the region any more than they can dictate an outcome.”

The plan for a meeting to lay the groundwork for the possible creation of a WMD-free Middle East was agreed to at a May 2010 conference of 189 parties to the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT.

The United States, feared the conference, which was to be held in Finland, could be used as a forum to bash Israel, a concern likely to have increased after eight days of fierce Israeli-Palestinian fighting that ended with a ceasefire on Wednesday.

Iran and Arab states often say Israel’s presumed nuclear arsenal poses a threat to Middle East peace and security. Israel and Western powers see Iran as the main nuclear proliferation threat. Tehran denies any atom bomb ambitions.

The State Department said it would keep working to try to bring about a meeting, adding such a gathering must take into account the security of all the states in the region and operate on the basis of consensus – effectively guaranteeing Israel, and everyone else, a veto.

“We would not support a conference in which any regional state would be subject to pressure or isolation,” Nuland said, in a clear reference to U.S. concerns that other participants might gang up on Israel.

U.S. and Israeli officials have said a nuclear arms-free zone in the Middle East could not be a reality until there was broad Arab-Israeli peace and Iran curbed its nuclear program.

Like nuclear-armed India and Pakistan, Israel has never signed the NPT. It neither confirms nor denies having nuclear arms, although non-proliferation and security analysts believe it has several hundred atomic weapons.

Even if the talks eventually occur, Western diplomats and others expect little progress any time soon due to the deep-rooted animosities in the region, notably the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israeli concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.

The Islamic state is in a stand-off with world powers that suspect it is seeking the means to produce nuclear arms. Israel has not ruled out military action against Iranian nuclear sites.

If Kerry becomes Secretary of State, does he get a double retirement?–Senator and high ranking government appointee?

Perhaps I’m just too cynical.

Special Forces Grunt on November 23, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Three ARs now Tom. The last one I bought was a .308. I might give up one of the .223/5.56s for something SKS just to round out the gun safe.

hawkdriver on November 23, 2012 at 10:51 PM

I picked up an SKS a year ago at a gun show for $200. Its a yugo, missing the bayonet and ‘grenade launcher’ or whatever they call their muzzle device.

I put a tapco stock on it and bought the 30 rd mags for it. Took me a year to fire it. It blew me away. The trigger is smooth, short, and crisp, and the iron sights are dead on.

I’m thinking I need something in .308, but they are all so expensive. Right now I am consolidating calibers, acquiring threaded barrels, and preparing to purchase cans for all.

Mrs Hawkdriver gives it two thumbs up.

hawkdriver on November 23, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Thanks for the review. So in Mrs. Hawkdriver’s opinion, the recoil was manageable and not punishing?

Yes, manageable. No. Not at all punishing. I had her use a locked elbow with her firing arm and cupped support with her other palm. The recoil caused her to naturally drift up but the natural tendency in that stance is for her arms and weapon to fall right back down in target aim vicinity. At 25 yards, she never missed the target with at least some shot. As she moved forward, as if the target was closing on her, the PX1 and 45 rounds became obviously more life threatening. (And easier to group at closer range) That and it’s loud and scary. I would not want to be in an enclosed area with that pointed at me.

Mrs. Federalist is OK with the Sig P238 380, not so much with the Micro Desert Eagle 380. The 45 is a bit more than she is willing to shoot more than once.

AZfederalist on November 23, 2012 at 10:50 PM

Again, after the 410 rounds, the 45s were nothing.

Excellent review, much to deliberate on the duel purpose aspect and great choice on the .308. That is actually my next purchase after I pick up my SA .45 GI issue in the summer. I am thinking M1 for the .308.

What’s even stranger is the singling out of Ms. Rice, a Rhodes scholar and seasoned policymaker who, whatever her failings, is no one’s fool.

She’s on a ship of fools, taking us all down with her. The focus should be on the 4 dead Americans and the truth, so that we never repeat this situation again. A whole bunch of people should’ve been axed by now, starting with the Sec of State in hiding.

Love the .308. One thing was odd about the DPMS I bought though. It doesn’t have an upper receiver ejector port dust cover. I asked if that was to keep the cost down. The vender said it didn’t need it. Said unless I rolled around in the mud with it, it’s not going to stop firing.

PatriotGal2257 on November 23, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Why does so much of the Right take the bait nearly every time?

Going after Rice is perfectly in line with the intended distraction the President wants, it lets him play the good guy by defending a Black woman and it keeps the heat off of him when its him who so richly deserves a Watergate airing of a lot of dirty laundry.

Going after the underling who did what she was told exposes her attackers as unable to handle properly the bigger fish.

If you need to validate your office and you can’t fix big problems then create of exaggerate lesser ones.

That is a bit of a shock to me too, considering what it is made for, ironic that you should talk DPMS, that is what my .223/5.56 is. Great weapon, even the Mrs.(Lila Munro/ her alias:)) loves it. Once we get the .308 that will default to her I think along with a 9mm for her CC.

Thanks for the update on the Taurus Judge 2.5″. Like the idea that you can mix incapacitating rounds (the .410s) with finishing rounds (the PDs/.45s). Sounds like the perfect pistol for the single-attacker situation, but workable with two. It’s good to know that the recoil on the .45s isn’t that bad, was wondering about that with such a short barrel. Overall, sounds like a damn good “night-table” or even an “in your truck” weapon.

What’s your thought on it’s concealed-carry footprint and/or utility?

You might want to hold onto them – if they all work well – just in case.
Replacements may be hard to come by in the not-too-distant future.

TXUS on November 23, 2012 at 11:22 PM

Not sure I’d conceal this one with the possibility of shooting it in public. The rifled portion of the barrel though short still spins the plastic wadding and shot cup. While the shot pattern in the target was very uniform, it spread quickly. It would be hard to confine your projectiles to just the intended target. And if you’re going to just load ball ammo, you might as well just carry one of the autos that was talked about last night or on this thread.

State of AZ did as well shortly after Big Sis was taken from us to D.C. and Jan Brewer became governor. However, some municipalities did not. There are some that use them in rather shady ways for revenue generation (speed vans 1000′s of yards from any speed limit signs on roads that should be 45 MPH marked at 25 MPH, but enough about Eloy). Tucson still has its revenue generators set up and has a couple vans they move about the city. Last van I saw did not have the photo enforcement signs around them as I thought they were supposed to have to be legal.

That’s the other leg up on the Judge the Governor has. It shoots the 45 ACP. The Judge is only supposed to have 45 used in it. I’m not any expert make to the distinction. Bishop would probably have some advice on that.
