Susan Rice: All of this Benghazi criticism is “unfounded”

posted at 2:01 pm on November 22, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Following her now-infamous round of Sunday talk shows after the attacks in Benghazi that resulted in the deaths of four Americans in September, U.N Ambassador Susan Rice seemed to kind of drop off the face of the earth, despite the ensuing firestorm over what now look an awful lot like deliberately misleading comments. The rumor that President Obama is considering her as a replacement for Hillary Clinton as head of the State Department hasn’t done anything to quell outrage the past few weeks, but still nary a word from her.

Ambassador Rice finally broke her silence on the subject on Wednesday, and defended her remarks by insisting that they were based on the best information she had at the time provided to her by the intelligence community. Via Reuters:

“I relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community,” said Rice…

“I made clear that the information provided to me was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers,” Rice told reporters at the United Nations in her first comments on the controversy. …

“Everyone, particularly the intelligence community, has worked in good faith, to provide the best assessment based on the information available,” Rice said. “None of us will rest … until we have the answer and the terrorists responsible for this attack will be brought to the justice.” …

Rice said some statements about her by McCain were “unfounded.” “I look forward to having the opportunity at the appropriate time to discuss all of this with him,” she said.

She relied “solely and squarely” on info from the intelligence community? That seems a bit odd, considering that the intelligence community suspected terrorism from the very beginning, which means that something doesn’t fit here — and the most obvious possibility for that missing link is that somebody high up in the food chain tweaked the talking points on a very inconvenient situation with only weeks to go before a close presidential election, although the White House has denied having done so.

Anyhow, there may well be bigger things to focus on than Susan Rice’s personal involvement, i.e. who it was that made the call to have her talk up that stupid “video” thing, why security in Benghazi was so poor, etcetera, but as for McCain and others’ criticisms and objection to her potential appointment to secretary of State being “unfounded”? …I don’t know about that. Rice was an active participant in what we still have reason to suspect was a coverup, and to quote Douglas Adams, “If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.”

White House declines to release images from night of Benghazi attacks
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57553090/white-house-declines-to-release-images-from-night-of-benghazi-attacks/?tag=socsh

The White House Photo Office has declined CBS News requests to release images taken of US officials during the Sept. 11 Benghazi attacks.

At a press conference on Nov. 14, 2012 President Obama stated that his Administration has provided all information regarding “what happened in Benghazi.”

“We have provided every bit of information that we have, and we will continue to provide information…,” the President told reporters, adding, “we will provide all the information that is available about what happened on that day…” and “I will put forward every bit of information that we have.”

In addition to the Benghazi images, CBS News has also requested, but not received, details concerning the president’s and his staff’s decisions during the attacks. Last year reporters were given details of the decision making, timeline and players regarding the Osama bin Laden raid as well as access to certain emails.

CBS News is also seeking drone and ground-level surveillance images and email communications and documents from the night of the Benghazi attacks. So far, none has been provided.

All of this Benghazi criticism is “unfounded”

And thats because between the WH, Sec State, the CIA, and the MSM, enough stories with different theories, and therefore “facts”, exist that can be used to “unfound” any claim or alternate theory.

The government has effectively placed the real story in a haystack of stories.

BobMbx on November 22, 2012 at 2:20 PM

From the Guardian UK link in the news above:

The Obama administration has kept a tight hold on materials related to the Bin Laden raid. The AP said that in response to separate requests from the AP for information about the mission, the defence department replied in March that it could not locate any photographs or video taken during the raid or showing Bin Laden’s body. It also said it could not find any images of Bin Laden’s body taken while it was on board the Vinson.

The Pentagon said it could not find any death certificate, autopsy report or results of DNA identification tests for Bin Laden, or any pre-raid materials discussing how the government planned to dispose of Bin Laden’s body if he were killed.

The defence department also refused to confirm or deny the existence of helicopter maintenance logs and reports about the performance of military gear used in the raid. One of the stealth helicopters that carried the Seals to Abbottabad crashed during the mission and its wreckage was left behind. People who lived near Bin Laden’s compound took photos of the wrecked chopper.

Most transparent administration evah!

Actually, I’m starting to believe the theories that Bin Laden died years prior of kidney failure.

Dr. ZhivBlago on November 22, 2012 at 2:27 PM

This may be off topic but as Mark Steyn wrote in a recent article Reality doesn’t need 2% of the vote to win.

The election was mounted in 100′s of MILLIONS in ads to choose the topic and say WHAT was the answer. That an’t go on anymore. There aren’t donors buying campaign ads to run every little peace of spin and distraction that only has to make it past a certain date in the near future.

I think the Rice episode is a marker of things to come which is that these scandals and misinformation points con’t have a deadline that they can be reasked. $ years of constant excuses and pathetics stories is going to be TOO much for even the MSM by 2016.

What should/could she have done differently? Is it because she assumed prematurely the attack was because of the YouTube vid?

AlexB on November 22, 2012 at 2:45 PM

Her reputation and career path really shouldn’t be her main concern if she is a good public servant. There are a bunch of al qaeda running free and splitting up into smaller groups to carry out missions against other Americans because of “the information provided” at the time, whether you buy her story or not.

I’m sure whoever is responsible for letting it happen is out of government and awaiting prosecution for aiding al qaeda, right? I mean, if Obama had only known that it was al qaeda and not some youtube video guy, those al qaeda would be dead right now…right?

So Barack knew if he sent the sacrificial lamb Rice out to face the wolves and perpetrate his lie at his behest he could just play the race card and challenge the GOP to distract from his horrible (at the least) actions on the issue and his horrible economy, draw out the timeline past the election and then after smearing his opponent unaccountably, gaining reelection with incredibly corrupt media help, just demagogue, demagogue, demagogue, for the skate free card.

Evan a wild pig knows its the human who’s his enemy not the dogs biting his butt, the mistake the GOP made was, as usual, nibbling around the edges and taking the bait instead of pointing the heavy blame towards where it belongs, the demigod in chief.

BigWyo on November 22, 2012 at 2:57 PM

Okay- I found it. Susan Rice was apparently instrumental in the decision not to accept bin Laden from the Sudanese during the Clinton Administration.

She also helped convince Clinton not to intervene in Rwanda during the genocide. Here’s an interesting piece from The Atlantic in 2001:

At an interagency teleconference in late April, Susan Rice, a rising star on the NSC who worked under Richard Clarke, stunned a few of the officials present when she asked, “If we use the word ‘genocide’ and are seen as doing nothing, what will be the effect on the November [congressional] election?” Lieutenant Colonel Tony Marley remembers the incredulity of his colleagues at the State Department. “We could believe that people would wonder that,” he says, “but not that they would actually voice it.” Rice does not recall the incident but concedes, “If I said it, it was completely inappropriate, as well as irrelevant.”

The Agonies of Susan Rice: Gaza and the Negroponte Doctrine
Nov 15 2012
***********

The war on Gaza is not between two armed forces, even matched, each flying the flag of a country;

it is a war between a major military power and a people that it has occupied,

whose means of warfare used to be the suicide bomber and has now devolved to the erratic rockets (propelled by sugar and potassium nitrate, a fertilizer, and made deadly by TNT and urea nitrate, another fertilizer).

Most of the rockets fired over the past two days have been intercepted by Israel’s sophisticated Iron Dome system.

No such luck for the Palestinians,

who have faced US-designed F16 jetfighters and Apache helicopters

and have no defensive systems.

The United States defended Israel. Susan Rice put the onus on Hamas. “There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organizations are employing against the people of Israel,” she said. “Israel, like any nation, has the right to defend itself against such vicious attacks.”

The sentences sting with contradictions.

Israel is not just a nation in this conflict,

but an occupying power,

who has violated a string of UN resolutions

and the Geneva Convention in its treatment of the people it has occupied since 1967.

Furthermore, while the United States has listed Hamas as a terrorist organization, this same political party also won relatively free and fair elections in Gaza in 2006 (at which point the Hamas leadership sent US President George W. Bush an unanswered letter with the proposal that they would accept Israel on the 1967 borders).

Israel has been obdurate in its reluctance to make peace as long as the United States has backed it,

and as long as its settlement policy in the West Bank can change the facts on the ground

and its strangulation policy in Gaza can suffocate the population into irrelevance.

Rice put her foot down in the Council.

It could take no action.

Our opposition to the resolution before this Council today should therefore not be misunderstood to mean we support settlement activity.

On the contrary, we reject in the strongest terms the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity.

For more than four decades Israeli settlement activity in territories occupied in 1967

has undermined Israel’s security and corroded hopes for peace and stability in the region.

Continued settlement activity violates Israel’s international commitments,

Unfortunately with Benghazi-gate the Democrats have most likely already won. First of all Romney refused to make this deceit a campaign issue which is one main reason he’s not president-elect today and second of all cowardly Republicans ducked for cover whenever the R-A-C-E word was used. The Democrats play stonewalling rope-a-dope tinged with the race card and the Republicans folded their tents.

Republican men need to have the balls which Democratic women such as Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton and especially Valerie Jarrett possess. At best, she allowed herself to be a mouthpiece for the administration’s lame explanation for Benghazi. She could have taken a much more tentative tone, but she pushed the implausible meme that the destruction of our embassy and murder of our ambassador and staff was caused by a video on YouTube. Thus she’s not fit to be Secretary of State.

If they had wanted a more tentative tone, they should have sent somebody with a background in diplomacy….. oh wait!

Seriously, If you’ve ever heard a diplomat speak they do exactly what you suggest. That the filthy liar went out there and was so definitive clearly indicates that she was messaging for the rat-eared wonder. A central point in the campaign stump speech was that the rat-eared wonder had eradicated Al Qaeda. Nothing as inconvenient as a sodomized and murdered career diplomat was going to de-rail that myth! That Susan Rice was willing to go out there and support the lie shows just how unfit she is for the SecState job. The GOP needs to stay strong on this and refuse to confirm the liar until we find out why her best information is not supported by what the IC says they had provided.

Here’s a clip from the above, gives a pretty good summary of what some think happened in Benghazi if you read the entire piece and its accompanying links.

……………….
Based on information provided by my source and corroborated elsewhere, the official account by administration officials is a mosaic of lies that were necessary to cover the unpalatable truth of covert actions taking place in Libya, Syria, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. The primary objective of our covert actions was to secretly arm anti-Assad “rebels” in Syria by funneling arms from Libya to Syria via Turkey, with other destinations that included Jordan and Lebanon. Regarding the threat to Stevens and the other murdered Americans, the truth will reformat the persistent question posed to government officials, from UN Ambassador Susan Rice to White House Spokesman Jay Carney and others from “how could you not have known” to “how could you have done these things?”

Is there any movement by anyone to award the two soldiers kill the postumous Congressional Medal of Honor?

kurtzz3 on November 22, 2012 at 4:12 PM

No. That is a military award. Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty (we really should keep their names in the discussion) were former Navy SEALS in Benghazi as “diplomatic security officers” which really means they were working for the CIA.

That being said, there are other awards that should be considered including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It is the least the rat-eared wonder can do after he watched them die in real-time but did nothing to avert their deaths because that would be inconvenient at a time when Al Qaeda was supposedly a non-threat.

She was given bad talking points. However, if she was dumb enough to believe them and pedaled them on five network shows she is by far too dumb to be the next Secretary of State. That performance makes even Hillary look good.

I can’t understand the American right’s fury with Rice. She was only the messenger of whatever info was passed on to her, and whatever she was instructed to say.

What should/could she have done differently? Is it because she assumed prematurely the attack was because of the YouTube vid?

AlexB on November 22, 2012 at 2:45 PM

Anyone with 10 functioning brain cells could tell that an attack with rocket launchers on an American embassy on the anniversary of 9-11 was a terrorist attack and not a spontaneous response to a Youtube video.

I am outraged that a person who is either too feebleminded to see this or too dishonest to tell the truth is in a position of power an influence. She didn’t just go along with the stupid video story. She went on 5 shows to repeatedly lie to the American people. If she was too dumb to know she was lying she is even more unfit to be in her position or any other position of power.

Rice fits in with the rest of these leftist hacks.

All they ever talk about is bringing people to justice. It’s all about “justice” with them. Fairness and justice. I’m so tired of this doublespeak.

You’re an ambassador, Ms. Rice. Leave the “justicing” to Eric Holder….on second thought, don’t.

freedomfirst on November 22, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Anyhow, there may well be bigger things to focus on than Susan Rice’s personal involvement, i.e. who it was that made the call to have her talk up that stupid “video” thing, why security in Benghazi was so poor, etcetera…

Amen to that, especially the lax security. Why, oh why isn’t that being emphasized more?!?

…to quote Douglas Adams, “If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.”

duff65 on November 22, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Two points here.

First, Rice is Ambassador to the UN. Benghazi isn’t part of her portfolio. Shouldn’t she have been the first one to question why she was asked to go on five Sunday talk shows to “brief” for the administration? She truly is an idiot if she didn’t ask that question.

Secondly, the same individual going on five Sunday shows is clearly administration-driven. She was not given bad talking points. She was the designated spokeswhore for the administration. Why? Because she is black and a female. Charges of racism and sexism in the wake of her lies were predictable.

Happy Nomad on November 22, 2012 at 4:50 PM

“I relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community,” said Rice

And never asked if there might be ANOTHER reason why the consulate was attacked?

And if you DID rely solely on what you were handed you should realize one thing: You Were Set Up To Look Like A Fool.

If you didn’t do the first, then you are far too stupid to be anywhere near the State Dept.

If you haven’t realized the second, then you are just a stooge and a poor one at that… surely Obama can get better stooges like you? Or do you really WANT to end up like Ambassador Stevens?

No one should believe a word out of this Liars’ liar WH.

Always, unrelentingly, ask this question “What was Amb. Stevens doing in Benghazi on the anniv. of 9/11, officially and unofficially?”

Therein is the kernel of this entire clusterfark and blood-on-Obama’s hands. Hillary has bloody hands too.

I think, “What good reason can you offer for why the multiple requests for extra security in Libya were denied?” should always be asked in conjunction with the question you brought up – make them squirm.

Rice is a Fools’ Fool, incompetent for any job.

Going after Susan Rice on Benghazi criticism is “unfounded”. All you going to do is give real racist more things to call you racist about. Even if it comes out that President Obama was hoping all thirty of the people there were killed and that is why they told those seals to stand down(because the Chicago way says “dead people don’t tell stories”), what are you going to do. Between the lying media and all the people that think of him as Santa Claus and know that he is going to take other peoples money to buy them things. He will walk and become even bigger. Republicans were slow on the up take. The socialist took there time got the people in the media and the schools. they were patient, remember the difference between the left and the right. The Right wants to solve the problems of the country, the left just wants to win to line their pockets and get more power.

pwb on November 22, 2012 at 7:02 PM

This may seem a relatively small issue for Republicans to go to the mat over, what with 16 trillion in debt, middle class families slipping into poverty, and Obamacare creating a national nightmare… but they need to lay their ears back and fight on this. If we’re willing to allow a blatant liar to advance to a position where she speaks to the world for all the rest of us, there’s no point in continuing on as a party.

Rice shot herself in the foot with those appearances on the talks shows. She could have saved herself but didn’t. I can see the questions if she ever goes in front of the Senate.

“Ms. Rice, who gave you the information you used?”

“Blah blah lie obfuscate lie blah”

“Ms. Rice, that was a simple question. When you went on those shows, you gave erroneous information. Using that information you basically shot yourself in the foot. I just gave you the chance to fix that. Instead you continued with your nonsense.

You have just reloaded and shot yourself in the head. Please leave now. You have demonstrated that you are not fit to hold any office in the United States Government.”

evilned on November 22, 2012 at 7:48 PM

We don’t know whether Rice was lied to or whether she was in on the Obama orchestrated conspiracy to deceive. Since she’s quite willing to serve as the Proven Liar’s SOS, it’s probably the latter.

The GOP should request her itinerary between the time of the attacks and her false recitals on Sunday morning. Why isn’t she incensed that she was used to peddle Obama’s lies.

Why did Obama send a black woman out to lie for him? Is he a misogynist or a racist?

Basilsbest on November 22, 2012 at 7:48 PM

This in entertaining. I haven’t seen the Sgt. Schultz defense used in quite a while. The Ambassador to the U.N., who is supposed to be at least somewhat interested in international affairs, reads from a piece of paper on national television without, apparently, having seen any television, read a newspaper, visited the internet, or even talked to any of the “intelligence” operatives in the Administration.

May I be permitted a fairly obvious question?

Since she had “nothing to do with Behghazi,” didn’t she wonder, herself, why she was being chosen by the President as the personal spokesperson on this matter?

And, secondly, why is someone given written “talking points” in the first place? So they’ll stick to a script, right? Which means, if she’s got a brain in her head, there is a script that the President wants followed. Which script, as in most cases requiring a script at all, is a smidge off from the bare facts.

She knew what she was doing. And the White House knew exactly what it was doing by handing her the sanitized script and sending her out to spread the (scrubbed, redacted) gospel. And we all know it. How incredible that there’s still dancing around this empty balloon as if there’s still any air left in it.

We must seem awfully stupid to people outside this country. Those American dupes, they’ll believe anything you tell them, so long as you give them a reason to want to believe it.

The Democrats are just getting a taste of what they dish out, only in this case justified. What party has made a specialty of conflating the concepts of error and lie over the last decade – the Democrats!

They tried to call every error of the Bush administration, even ones they had to invent with the help of their media lapdogs, even ones made by low-level officials, as “Lies” told by the President.

But nowadays, they and their poodles on TV would have us believe it is a “mistake” whenever a senior official, or even the President, has to change his story yet again, because other actors in their kabuki theater can’t stay on script.

They sicken me, almost as much as the poseurs that pretend to inform the public, and instead spew the dictator-wannabe’s propaganda.
