Meme du jour: It’ll look bad if Republicans pick a fight with Susan Rice

posted at 6:01 pm on November 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

Two clips for you on this slowest of news days from Newsbusters and Mediaite. Today’s meme du jour is distinct from Friday’s alleging that Republicans like McCain and Graham are racist and sexist for picking on Obama’s designated stooge in the Benghazi mess. That meme’s still alive and kicking — James Clyburn pushed it this morning — but this one’s different. It’s not so much that Colmes and Scarborough et al. think that criticism of Rice is racist, it’s that they seem to think it can be spun as racist and therefore the “optics” should be enough to back Republicans off after the nightmare of November 6. Of the two memes, I actually find this one more obnoxious. Demagogic though he is, Clyburn is at least raising a question of unfairness. Scarborough and the “Game Change” gang aren’t. They seem open to the idea that Rice should skate on her role in misleading the public on a huge counterterrorism failure simply because it’s politically unhelpful to the opposition to challenge her. I wonder, then, is there any timeframe for when the optics of “a bunch of old white guys” questioning a minority appointee will have rebounded enough to permit basic matters of government oversight? Is it okay if the GOP challenges her so long as non-white non-old guys like Tim Scott or Darrell Issa or Ted Cruz or Rubio do most of the questioning? Because there is in fact plenty in her record with which to challenge her. Let’s hash this out, because the DOJ might want to send a few thousand more guns to Mexican drug cartels and the “bad optics” excuse will come in handy when attempting to question Holder.

If you want to concern-troll the GOP on Rice’s behalf, there’s a better way to do it. Press them on the fact that they’re letting the broader Benghazi inquiry get bogged down on Rice’s nonsense, which deserves criticism but remains the least part of the administration’s failings. We still don’t have a solid answer about why military reinforcements couldn’t make it to the CIA annex in time to save Doherty and Woods even though the attack on the consulate had begun nearly eight hours earlier. And I don’t know why Rice’s name is now a dirty word while Hillary Clinton, who was ultimately responsible at State for Stevens’s disgracefully poor security, remains basically untouched in all of this. I can only assume it’s a combination of her popularity, the fact that she’s on her way out anyway, and her friendships with Senate Republicans. McCain’s not going to go after his old drinking buddy, is he?

Obama roasted Susan Rice.

To ask so little of the first half black president, and Susan Rice, is the ultimate form of racism.

Grow up, sissies from the left, to the right!

Those coconuts in the black caucus belong in a clown parade, or on MSNBC, most of them. Scrooom you – MLK died for nothing.

The meme that hued-people can be dummies, incompetent unaccountable cheating nincumpoops makes a charade of all MLK aimed for. It is the ultimate insult to all minorities, for utter shame.

salem on November 20, 2012 at 6:31 PM

I didn’t know who Susan Rice was until a few weeks ago. I would guess the vast majority of Americans still don’t know who she is. The problem Republicans will have criticizing her is that people won’t care, not that they’ll think its racist.
By the way, am I the only one who thinks that any time a reporter/pundit says something along these lines, they really mean that they believe something (in this case that Republicans are racist) but don’t have the guts to come out and say it?

Condi was never UN Ambassador and never deputized to go on television and lie. A better comparison would be Colin Powell, but it still invites “all you see is Race!” garbage because both individuals happen to be black. The more we make of the double standard, the less media oxygen goes to the real scandal, though.

The Senate voted 85 to 13 to confirm Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state, providing the most negative votes cast against a nominee for that post in 180 years.

Even at the height of the Vietnam War in 1973, Henry A. Kissinger’s nomination drew only seven negative votes.

peski on November 20, 2012 at 7:21 PM

The Dems have already said worse. As I’ve sorted through some old stuff I found this gem.

Anyone remember this during Obamacare?

This afternoon, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) gave a speech in which he quoted Richard Hofstadter’s 1964 essay, “The Paranoid Style in American Politics” and accused ObamaCare opponents of inciting “vindictive passions”:

“Far from appealing to the better angels of our nature, too many colleagues are embarked on a desperate no-holds-barred mission of propaganda, obstruction and fear. History cautions us of the excesses to which these malignant, vindictive passions can ultimately lead. Tumbrils have rolled through taunting crowds, broken glass has sparkled in darkened streets. Strange fruit has hung from Southern trees. Even this great institution of government that we share has cowered before a tail-gunner waving secret lists.”

Republicans have been regarded as a mix of those who sent the French aristocrats to the guillotine during the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution; the Hitler Youth, Gestapo and SS who attacked Jews during Kristallnacht and Southern racists who lynched and hung black Americans. This is the vilest kind of slander.

You can’t get much worse than this. They don’t just wallow in the mud in their political fighting; they live in the sewer.

What is the point of paying attention to anything these people say?

It is not only Scarborough and Colmes who think this, it is the basis of the democrat play book. They are trying to goad white people into a racist position where none existed, so they can say “See! We knew it!” If these people want to say that once in office you can never criticize or hold accountable any minority, they should never be elected or appointed to office to begin with. There, I said it. Leftists, including their minority coalitions, spout hate against white people every day. Just being white is a crime now, it seems. Screw that, and screw them.

So this is what MLK saw on the mountain top? Not a world of blacks and whites living together in harmony, but a world for all blacks to be obsolved of any and all wrong doing because of their skin color and us to be called racist for daring to question their actions?

My how the tables have turned. It’s almost like it was never about equality, but about ultimately gaining power.

If this is the case then perhaps we should embrace the word racist. They’ve cried wolf too many times with this. Perhaps we should turn it around and defuse it’s meaning. You know, the way they took back the N word. Diminish it’s meaning and those who use it.

She’s both “a willful moron” AND “incompetent for being played” but what I strongly object to and consider her permanent failing is that she went before the American public (and by doing so, the entire world) on FIVE tv networks and lied. Not only lied but lied with such animosity toward anyone who would question her false line about Benghazi as to be as nasty as possible toward reason, decency and intuition.

Her willing-foolishness, in doing what she did on that dreadful, rotten, dishonest day of her bitter lecturing on the five tv show appearances, is/was an obvious resource for Obama to plumb — send her out, insist on the lies, chastise anyone questioning the lies — is customary, dirty, disgusting a deed by Obama but that’s his modus operandi: “surround” himself with these rotten-character-big-brain-vanity people so when he needs them to go crooked to work his magik, they are reasonably, deservedly smeared and then it all goes awayyyy after the tempest is done, almost always based upn calling Republicans “racists”.

Hillary — I agree with AP here — is the dirty gurl. But Obama is the stainer.

And the GOP people in Congress deserve to be equally condemned along with Rice if they refuse to put any teeth in any punishment — worse, if they refuse punishment at all — of Rice for her icky betrayal of human decency, or whatever it can also be called.

I said this about her a long time ago: she’s not a nice person, S. Rice isn’t. I said that when she was nominated for the UN Ambassador position by Obama, I said that after she showed up there approved to that position by the hapless, “failing to recognize the reality” GOP Congressional persons.

It’s time for everyone elected to Congress on a GOP ticket to wise up and start properly “recognizing” reality, for another thing.

About those GOP Congressional persons I just comented about:

this Get-Rice wave is all about Getting-Kerry-In.

Anyone who can’t see this, shouldn’t be voting.

Rice is the least of those two evils.

It’s obvious that James Clyburn doesn’t care what happened to Ambassador Stevens and the other American heroes who were murdered in Benghazi because they were white.

If he wants to play the race game, then by all means, let’s play it.

When will conservatives find their cojones and point out that Susan Rice DENIED ALL US ASSISTANCE DURING THE SLAUGHTER IN RWANDA in order to protect Bill Clinton politically.

By all means, let’s “go there.”

Per CBS journalist, Margaret Brennan, an unnamed intelligence source told her that the changes in the initially classified talking points were made by some unidentified someone in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, based on the belief that instant and “on the ground” reports fingering al-Qaeda affiliates for having launched the attacks at the consulate and later at the “annex” were “too tenuous” considering the source.

So, this unnamed someone modified the talking points, and an unclassified version of those talking points was developed and signed off on by the DNI himself, that had removed not only all those “tenuous” references to al-Qaeda affiliates, and the term “terrorism” as well, and a revised version was developed that referenced instead the term “extremists” to describe participants in the attack.

The revised talking points were then passed onto the White House where they were given to Susan Rice, and she was either dispatched by the White House, or she volunteered, to make a series of appearances on the “talkies” with these new talking points to inform the American people that a spontaneous demonstration which had materialized at the Consulate in Benghazi, one protesting against a movie that had been made in Hollywood, was the real precipitating factor in the attack, and that somehow certain extremists attending that demonstration got out of hand and attacked the Consulate with heavy weapons, and unable to break into a “safe” area within the building, poured diesel fuel into the area and set it afire, which resulted in the killing of the United States Ambassador, Chris Stevens, and his top level Information Officer, a foreign service veteran named Sean Smith. These demonstrators “gone bad” then proceeded sometime later to attack an “annex” building located at some distance from the Consulate, in the course of which two former active duty SEALs were killed, attempting to defend against the attack by crazed demonstrators who had, at some point, been joined by extremists, who happened to bring GPS guided mortars, RPGs and other assault weapons to the demonstration.

And, one unnamed intelligence source within the Administration was surprised that the “changes” in the talking points had created such an uproar. From the story:

. . .
Another source, a senior U.S. official familiar with the drafting of the talking points, tells CBS News the “controversy this word choice has caused came as a surprise.”

“The points were not, as has been insinuated by some, edited to minimize the role of extremists, diminish terrorist affiliations, or play down that this was an attack,” the official tells CBS News, adding that there were “legitimate intelligence and legal issues to consider, as is almost always the case when explaining classified assessments publicly.”

“Most people understand that saying ‘extremists’ were involved in a direct assault on the mission isn’t shying away from the idea of terrorist involvement,” added the official. “Because of the various elements involved in the attack, the term extremist was meant to capture the range of participants.”
. . . .

Oh, sure!

The use of the term “extremists” has always been known as a “catch all” term to denote terrorists of various stripes who launch mortar and RPG attacks against facilities in order to kill a United States Ambassador, and three other good Americans.

For example, here was a pertinent portion of a statement made by DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse (quoted here at Hot Air) so characterizing protesters and demonstrators that had been showing up at Congressional “town hall” meetings back during the healthcare debate back in August of 2009:

“The Republicans and their allied groups – desperate after losing two consecutive elections and every major policy fight on Capitol Hill – are inciting angry mobs of a small number of rabid right wing extremists funded by K Street Lobbyists to disrupt thoughtful discussions about the future of health care in America taking place in Congressional Districts across the country.
. . . . (my emphasis added)

And there you have it.

So that’s the liberal agenda now? The republicans are sure to cave anytime liberals cry racism?

If there wasn’t racism to begin this term it’ll be in full bloom by the end of it…
