Allen West concedes

posted at 8:01 am on November 20, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

One of the last Election Day questions has been answered after two weeks of fumbling by official in St. Lucie County, Florida.  The recanvasses and recount of the vote has left Rep. Allen West over 1900 votes short of victory, and early this morning West conceded the race to Patrick Murphy:

Florida Rep. Allen West — the tea party pugilist and face of the class of House Republicans that stormed to power two years ago — conceded Tuesday to 29-year-old construction executive Patrick Murphy in one of the nation’s highest-profile congressional races.

After two weeks of battle with St. Lucie County elections officials — and a recount of early votes that wound up extending Murphy’s lead — West acknowledged that he couldn’t surmount his 1,904-vote, or 0.58 percent, deficit. That difference was just outside the 0.5 percent threshold to automatically trigger a recount of all votes.

The West campaign sent out a lengthy statement by e-mail to the media this morning:

For two weeks since Election Day, we have been working to ensure every vote is counted accurately and fairly.  We have made progress towards that goal, thanks to the dedication of our supporters and their unrelenting efforts to protect the integrity of the democratic process.  While many questions remain unanswered, today I am announcing that I will take no further action to contest the outcome of this election.

While there are certainly still inaccuracies in the results, and the actions of the St. Lucie County and Palm Beach County Supervisors of Elections rightly raise questions in my mind and for many voters, after much analysis and this past weekend’s recount in St. Lucie County, our legal team does not believe there are enough over-counted, undercounted or fraudulent votes to change the outcome of the election.

While a contest of the election results might have changed the vote totals, we do not have evidence that the outcome would change.  Given the extremely high evidentiary hurdles involved in a successful challenge, I will not ask my generous supporters to help fund a drawn-out, expensive legal effort with little chance of success. Therefore, we will not contest the certification or challenge the seating of Congressman-elect Murphy.

West also hinted that Florida voters haven’t seen the last of him:

Only God knows what is in store for each of us. I have dedicated my life to serving this nation, and the results of this election will not change my purpose. Just as I did in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, just as I did on Capitol Hill, I will continue to fight for our Republic.

At the very least, West will have more time now to work with grassroots conservatives in organizing opposition to Democratic policies.  West has been a star at events like CPAC and Tea Party rallies and conventions, and that will only increase after this tough loss.  Don’t be too surprised if West challenges Murphy in 2014, when Barack Obama’s campaign isn’t around to drive turnout and the incumbent President typically loses seats in Congress.  This race was narrow enough that even just a little buyer’s remorse could make the difference in two years.

I’m pretty sure that the reduction of Republican constituency to teabagging freaks like this is a good sign for the future of our country.

This election keeps on giving-It’s an embarrassment of riches. So many bodies along the road-Mcain, Romney,Rove,West,Ryan,Angle,Odonnel, Allen-it just goes on and on-teabagging nutjobs sprawled out in the wake of a jug eared, purple lipped, muslim statist.

The worst part of the whole West deal is that for the last 2 years we were in West’s district then after redistricting we were moved to Debbie Wasserpig Scuzz’s district. Talk about adding insult to injury. The sad part is that we’re part of a veterans group and West’s office was so helpful when we needed legislative info we know we won’t get the same from a pig who’s a member of a party that thinks that vets and the military are nothing more than props for their BS.

See, the problem with the Republicans is that they are too white. They never run any black canida…oh. West is black. And so is Mia Love. And they both lost. Hmmm…..

Ya know guys, maybe it isn’t about race. Maybe it’s about politics and ideology.

Too many minorities identify race to party. “You can’t be black/Latino if you’re Republican.” So you could fill the whole Republican ticket with minorities and it won’t make a difference. Because unfortunately, a majority of the populace wants free shiat, and conservatism is NOT the political ideology of free shiat. A different colored face makes no difference.

I like Allen West, and would vote for him, not because he’s black, but because he’s conservative. And that’s EXACTLY why other people voted AGAINST him.

After the recount West lost by one half of one percent. A tiny fraction. Considering that St. Lucie County is about 50% transplanted New York area Democrats, and also has a huge black population that reflexively votes Democrat, this is quite an achievement. West is no loser.

The winner is a Ted Kennedy imitation, both in looks and in behavior, including youthful indiscretions like DUI’s and slugging a cop, and having a rich daddy who helped him by mounting an unremittingly nasty and yes, racist “independent” campaign against West. This Murphy is obviously just the type of guy to make Democrats swoon in admiration. Among the swooners is South Florida Lefty and novelist Carl Hiiason, who wrote an ugly agitprop column calling West “crazy”. This column was featured prominently in our local paper, (a Scripps Howard concoction) and is the proximate cause of my not renewing my subscription to it.

ddrintn on November 20, 2012 at 10:30 AM

True. To be fair, both parties are guilty. The problem is that people vote out of personal self-interest. This used to be a “good”, because personal self-interest meant “keeping my taxes low and govt. off my back.” But this changed when people realized that they could vote to get govt. to give them OTHER peoples’ money, and “personal self-interest” became envy, greed and sloth.

And each little group has their own Christmas list. And the parties go out and try to win the Latino vote, the Black vote, the women vote, etc. etc. The group quickly becoming the preferred group to hate and steal from without shame are whites, specifically white males.

Now, do the pols try to cater to “white males”? HA! They slander them, degrade them and take their cash. To even imply you would cater to the white male vote is “racist”, even though it’s no different than doing so for the Latino vote, black vote, etc.

No unity, no post-racial healing: it’s PAYBACK time, literally.

You really are a moron. You tried to say that the fact that Mourdock and Akin were not forced out of their races means embracing them. So yeah, you were trying to make it sound like someone making a stupid comment about rape or the effects of it is the same as embracing a rapist, which is what the left did in regard to Clinton. You have yet to point out an issue in which the left holds the high moral ground, which was the point of your rant toward me. Put up or shut up.

Night Owl on November 20, 2012 at 10:59 AM

This race was narrow enough that even just a little buyer’s remorse could make the difference in two years.

LOL — Wasn’t that what the right thought would be the case for Obama too? You don’t even know how the guy will govern for HIS DISTRICT THAT I DOUBT YOU LIVE IN, BUT YOU ARE ALREADY TO CHALLENGE HIM!

The sad part is that we’re part of a veterans group and West’s office was so helpful when we needed legislative info we know we won’t get the same from a pig who’s a member of a party that thinks that vets and the military are nothing more than props for their BS.

Was that his “gift” to you? Interesting…

It was God’s will that Walsh and West lost, and that Obama won.

Stop defying God!

No offense intended to any of his supporters…but I think it’s necessary to realize he was waaay out of line with his remarks about Romney. Let’s all hope he has seen the error in his ways.

lynncgb on November 20, 2012 at 11:20 AM

The trolls are heavy in this thread. It sucks that West lost, but not any more than many other GOP contests where we narrowly lost. West’s district was heavily gerrymandered and redrawn to make his race harder, so it’s almost less of a surprise. Why are libs so enthusiastic about this loss, hmmm?

I suppose it couldn’t possibly be because black republicans must fail in order for The Narrative to be maintained. Naw, definitely not that.

There’s people with positions and views in congress (good or bad) and then there’s pure rabble rousers bent on nothing but provocation 24/7. West falls in that group, that’s what Murphy ran his campaign on and that’s why voters kicked west out.

Nope. You’re not really black unless you’re a Dem.

Also, it’s OK to be rich as long as you tell the press that everyone needs to give up more of what they have for the poor…of course, thirty years later you’re still rich.

Dr. ZhivBlago on November 20, 2012 at 11:54 AM

he lost and many good republicans lost, including Romney, because we failed to get out the vote.
we have no one but ourselves to blame for not neutralizing the media and not getting out the vote to keep fine people like West in Congress, elect new people like Josh Mandel to US Senate, or bring about the end to creeping socialism and American decline by electing Romney as president.

we need to GOTV, GOTV, GOTV, GOTV.

Psalm 1:1-6 comes to mind…God is ultimately in control, so I watch and pray with, I must admit, a heavy heart because I love my country and it is heartbreaking to watch if fall into darkness.
