Noted Grinch ruining Christmas yet again

posted at 5:01 pm on November 18, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

If you were reading Hot Air over the holidays last year, you may recall seeing this story from Santa Monica, California.

This year, however, atheists have taken over most of the two-block stretch, nearly shutting out and angering a group of churches who contend the atheists have organized against the Christians and gamed a city lottery process allocating the holiday exhibit space…

The atheists are declaring the politically left-leaning seaside town of Santa Monica as their latest battleground in a national movement to assert their rights.

“I’m part of a growing movement in America of atheists standing up for their rights. It’s a very exciting time for us that we’re having more of an impact in our society,” said Damon Vix, the organizer of the atheist group.

Apparently, everything old is new again, because Mr. Vix is back and more unpleasant than ever. Unfortunately, his unrelenting, personal war on Christmas seems to have taken a toll on the city, which has now thrown up their arms in exasperation and cancelled their entire display.

Damon Vix didn’t have to go to court to push Christmas out of the city of Santa Monica. He just joined the festivities.

The atheist’s anti-God message alongside a life-sized nativity display in a park overlooking the beach ignited a debate that burned brighter than any Christmas candle.

Santa Monica officials snuffed the city’s holiday tradition this year rather than referee the religious rumble, prompting churches that have set up a 14-scene Christian diorama for decades to sue over freedom of speech violations. Their attorney will ask a federal judge Monday to resurrect the depiction of Jesus’ birth, while the city aims to eject the case.

This guy and his friends aren’t trying to impart any sort of competing message. They’re just trying to ruin the spirit of the holiday for everyone else. It’s just a shame that someone has to go to these lengths to satisfy their craving for attention and desire to belittle the beliefs of others. This is the fourth straight year that Vix has been up to these shenanigans and, apparently, no amount of public scorn, shame or ire will dissuade him from his little hobby.

They’re not being motivated by a desire to ruin everyone else’s fun.
They’re just being defiant of anything that represents God.

If their defiance coincidently ruins someone else’s fun, “Oh well”.

I wonder if he enjoys Christmas Day off or if he goes into work. And does he work on Sundays or does he take that day off too? The “a” in atheist means non-theist, not anti-theist. Just shut up and mind your own damn business asshat.

“I’m part of a growing movement in America of atheists standing up for their rights. It’s a very exciting time for us that we’re having more of an impact in our society,” said Damon Vix

Funny, I don’t think anyone is forcing Mr. Vix to take part in any of these displays, I don’t think anyone is forcing him to go down to the park and view these displays that are put on by otherwise free people using their own funds, time, and efforts. He just doesn’t want other people to see these displays or enjoy them. That doesn’t seem to be what liberty is about, as a matter of fact, it seems to me that suppressing the right of other people to express their views and celebrate a holiday in public seems kind of the opposite; oh, I don’t know, if the left were discussing this, they’d say it kind of borders of fascist.

In many cases like Mr. Vix, the problem is that displays of this type remind him of the religion that he has rejected and it causes him pangs of guilt. In our society, we don’t want anybody to feel bad, so he believes the best way to assuage his guilt is to suppress expression of that which causes him those feelings of guilt.

Midas on November 18, 2012 at 6:24 PM

I think you have the nub of it right there. It’s the liberal rather than the athiest part that drives this. While I am concerned for the eternal souls of the athiests in our midst, they are staunch defenders of liberty here and also demonstrate tolerance and non-interference with those who are religious and hold different views. It’s the liberal part that seems to make people intolerant and not only turn away from certain expressions of belief, be they religious or political — they want to suppress those expressions with which they disagree.

chewmeister on November 18, 2012 at 6:46 PM

I think Christians should start fighting back on all this stuff by (1) removing and filing lawsuits for the removal of all Christmas displays from public land; (2) placing a nativity scene on every church lawn in every city (that would be a LOT); (3) organizing bus tours of the Christmas nativity displays (like many cities have their “tacky lights” tours) (this would also encourage a little friendly competition – “did you see that Baptist display,” “oh, yeah – but did YOU see the Lutheran one?”); and finally, (4) it would remove OUR holiday from an increasingly hostile state and let the secular crowd know that without Christianity, Christmas is a pretty meaningless holiday.

No atheist could argue with THAT plan – although I’m sure they would try.

Professor Richard Dawkins makes a festive vow to ‘destroy Christianity

sharrukin on November 18, 2012 at 6:13 PM

I don’t see anything in the article itself about making a “vow” (even if the Mail would like the spookiness of that word). The writer, “reverend” Geo. Pitcher, does make a false equation between wanting to destroy Christianity (an idea) and wanting to destroy Jews (human beings):

So, ‘if we win…and destroy Christianity’. True, there’s a ‘so to speak’ in there, but it doesn’t do much. Try ‘If we win and, so to speak, kill all the Jews’ as an alternative. Doesn’t really work, does it? And Prof Dawkins can hardly claim that he was misquoted or taken out of context. He was editing the magazine, after all – there’s even a picture of him doing so, pen poised masterfully over page proofs.

The wrongness of the comment would be even clearer if he’d just tried to replace “Christianity” with “Christians” (or “Judaism” with “Jews”), though the connotations of his false simile are usefully sensitive ones. His is the same sort of bad thinking whereby ideas and dogmata are thought essential, even innate, to identity, and where “Islamophobia” can be called “racism”.

Now, you and I would probably both like to see the death of Keynesianism. You might say we’d like to use arguments and data to destroy it. Doesn’t mean we want to “kill all the [Keynesians]“.

I’d also like to see the death, by careful refutation, of all forms of Abrahamism. (Won’t happen during my lifetime, though will happen sometime between now and when the sun peters out in five billion or so years.) But in the meanwhile, my family and I are going to enjoy some good company, some Christmas ale, and plenty of Yuletide cheer!

Of course, both systems of thought will outlive a mere individual like you or me – a single spark out of billions and billions in the long history of our species, let alone the planet – but one can have little doubt that all forms of Abrahamism will have been forgotten long, long before the end of mankind.

In the meantime, join me in a friendly glass of eggnog. :)

They’re just being defiant of anything that represents God.

For some reason, your comment reminded me of this little amusement:

“God is dead!” – Nietzsche
“Nietzsche is dead!” – God

Damon Vix will eventually have a meeting upon which he will have an eternal “epiphany” no doubt.

Five will get you twenty this guy would go out of his way to stand up for Muslim rights. I am frequently amazed at people who snicker and deride ‘religion’ only to get their pants in a bunch over perceived slights to Islam.

I wonder if there is a way to demand equal time from this guy in his atheistic pursuits, maybe protesting Ramadan at the local mosque or perhaps railing against Kwanza celebrations in ethnic neighborhoods. I would love to see how that works out for him.

ghostwalker1 on November 18, 2012 at 11:43 PM

This is why I don’t let people in real life know I’m an atheist.

I love Christmas. I’m glad people have religion. I’m happy that it makes them happy.

It doesn’t take anything away from me, in fact the opposite.

But when retards like this guy do stuff like this I have to read how others would like to take wooden bats to atheists heads, and that atheists are the devil, etc. Gee thanks! I’m glad nobody can get to me in real life.

Doubly sad because the city is named after Saint Monica, a mother who prayed for years for the conversion of her playboy son, Augustine. He later became a scholar and a doctor of the Church, St. Augustine.

How long before they start lobbying to change the names of all these cities named after saints, like San Francisco? How many places can you name after Richard Dawkins, anyway?

You defend one of the most vitriolic, hateful militant atheists-activists on the planet, implying the guy’s simply intelligent and reasonable (unlike those eeeevil Christians who only contribute to charities like none other and those dumb-dumb dummy Christians who merely invented the scientific method as we use it today, so what do they know?), and in said defense hope that an ideology of love and faith that gives a real and hopeful meaning to existence dies. You cannot mask that sulfuric odor with a symbolic-yet-impossible offer of a traditional winter beverage.

His actions are not directed at Christians celebrating their fairy tale in their own church or on their own private property.

Actually if we’re supposed to sit by and not complain about your sillyness then we have to sit by when the muslims do their thing too, and the Hundus, and the Buddhists, and the Satanists, and all the others. Look how upset many of you get when someone else displays a message you don’t like. Your philosophy is: do as I say, not as I do.

You have church property to display this kind of stuff. You have your own yards. You can put your fish and bumper stickers on your cars. No one is stopping you. But if you get to do it on public property so does everyone else.

BS.

They do nothing of the sort unless its an attack on them.

Jews have Hanukkah and you don’t see Christians getting upset about that, or trying to stop them from having displays about it.

Your user name suggests that like many other so-called Atheists that you are as consumed by religion as the most devout followers. Perhaps you’re obsessed with other peoples’ religion but afraid or unwilling to claim your own.

I don’t believe in dowsing. And I’ve only mentioned it once or twice in my adult life. Can you say the same about religion?

What does a self-loathing, non-heterosexual look like?

BigAlSouth on November 19, 2012 at 5:57 AM

Christianity is such a weak religion. It can’t survive without a public spectacle.

If it was the other way they would be arrested for inciting violence.

Strange that such people are so thin-skinned about their lack of belief that they cannot tolerate the belief of others.

I mean, really, if you are an atheist, then what difference TO YOU does it make if others celebrate Christmas or not?

I mean, beyond the federal holiday bit. Speaking of which, why do atheists take off on holy days that have been turned into holidays? Doesn’t that offend them even more than private speech in the public square?

For all the ‘reason’ put forward by atheists, the lack of logic is astounding.
