Was Obama briefed that Benghazi was a terror attack before Rice went on TV?
posted at 11:31 am on November 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
So says John Solomon at the Washington Guardian, citing sources within the intelligence community. Within 72 hours, the Presidential Daily Briefing made it clear, according to Solomon, that the attack did not arise from a spontaneous mob protesting a YouTube video, but instead resulted from a planned, coordinated attack by radical Islamist “extremists” with links to al-Qaeda:
U.S. intelligence told President Barack Obama and senior administration officials within 72 hours of the Benghazi tragedy that the attack was likely carried out by local militia and other armed extremists sympathetic to al-Qaida in the region, officials directly familiar with the information told the Washington Guardian on Friday.
Based on electronic intercepts and human intelligence on the ground, the early briefings after the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya identified possible organizers and participants. Most were believed to be from a local Libyan militia group called Ansar al-Sharia that is sympathetic to al-Qaida, the official said, while a handful of others was linked to a direct al-Qaida affiliate in North Africa known as AQIM.
Those briefings also raised the possibility that the attackers may have been inspired both by spontaneous protests across the globe on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and by a desire to seek vengeance for the U.S. killing last summer of a Libyan-born leader of al-Qaida named Abu Yaya al-Libi, the officials said, speaking only on condition of anonymity because they were discussing intelligence matters.
The details from the CIA and Pentagon assessments of the killing of Ambassador Chris Stephens were far more specific, more detailed and more current than the unclassified talking points that UN Ambassador Susan Rice and other officials used five days after the attack to suggest to Americans that an unruly mob angry over an anti-Islamic video was to blame, officials said.
Jennifer Rubin calls this game over for the administration’s defense of Susan Rice, and of the President himself:
Solomon cautions that there were bits of evidence pointing to a spontaneous attack but, as Eli Lake of the Daily Beast and others have reported, he writes: “Among the early evidence cited in the briefings to the president and other senior officials were intercepts showing some of the participants were known members or supporters of Ansar al-Sharia — the al-Qaida-sympathizing militia in Libya — and the AQIM, which is a direct affiliate of al-Qaida in northern Africa, the officials said.”
How could the president and his senior staff then have allowed (or rather, sent) Rice to go out to tell an entirely different tale to the American people on Sept. 16 on five TV shows?
This report indicates that the president certainly knew that Benghazi wasn’t a rogue movie review gone bad. He had information that plainly spelled out what was later confirmed by additional intelligence. If this information was too confidential to share with the public, at the very least the president and others should not have mislead voters.
This is a full-blown scandal, and in light of this information, the press corps’s slothful indifference to uncovering the truth at Wednesday’s news conference with Obama is all the more shocking. It is time for the president to come clean. The scandal has now enveloped the Oval Office and will define his second term, if not resolved satisfactorily.
To some extent, this wouldn’t be a surprise, if accurate. A month ago, we learned that the CIA station chief in Libya had cabled Washington that the sacking of the consulate was a terrorist attack, not a protest gone rogue. Two days after the attack itself, the Independent in the UK reported that the US had warnings up to 48 hours before the attack that the consulate had been targeted for 9/11. We learned in October that the State Department knew within two hours after the attack that Ansar al-Sharia had claimed credit for it. All of this would fit very neatly into a PDB 72 hours later that concluded the attack had been planned and coordinated by terrorists rather than a mob action, or even a spontaneous terrorist action initiated to exploit a supposed demonstration.
We certainly have heard enough to conclude that Rice’s statement on several shows that there was “no evidence” of a terrorist attack was flat-out false, regardless of whether the evidence was conclusive by the time she made those appearances. Solomon’s sources advance that part of the story by claiming that the PDB made a conclusive case that Benghazi at least two days before Obama sent Rice out to disseminate a false narrative. If those sources are accurate — and it’s worth pointing out that anonymous sources have told many conflicting tales in this scandal thus far — that puts Obama in a very bad position, especially since he personally extended that narrative in the US and at the UN in a speech that blamed “those who slander the Prophet of Islam” for the violence.
What’s interesting about Solomon’s leak, other than the data itself, is the timing. David Petraeus testified yesterday that he had almost immediately concluded that a terrorist attack had taken place, and that the official talking points given to Rice had been edited somewhere along the way from the CIA. This came at the same time as a leak from the CIA that Petraeus would be the subject of an investigation into his extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell, and a leak the day before of the talking points prepared for Susan Rice, which at first blush exonerated her from charges of lying about the attack. There is a war going on between State and the intel community, and perhaps within the intel community itself, with sources having axes to grind lobbing leaks like mortar shells into this story.
The result? It’s difficult to determine the truth without a boatload of subpoenas, but it’s clear that we haven’t heard the whole story about what happened before, during, and after the attack.

Also under the Democratic God FDR, we knew from code breaking on 12/05/41 that we would be attacked within a few days by the Jappanese. A message was sent to Pearl Harbor which was not marked urgent. It arrived slowly and was decoded after the attack had started.

Why is HotAir linking the Robert Kagan opinion piece in favor of Susan Rice that completely avoids the information that was available to her two days before she spread her lies on the Sunday shows? Is it to reinforce the division between the state dept and intelligience?
DanMan on November 17, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Wrong. Go look at the AUMF.
Actually, there were. In fact, Saddam had used them on his own people and US and British troops removed tonnes of WMD for Iraq.
I don’t know about that, but I opposed the Iraq war then and I still oppose it.
BS. Bush’s PDB was never specific. It said that OBL and AQ was “determined to strike” in the US. That was it. On the other hand, there had been months of warnings and TWO BOMBINGS in those months at the Benghazi consulate.
No, that is not the only thing that matters. It is also important that, as we did in the wake of 11 September 2001, we learn from our mistakes and do everything that we can to prevent attacks in the future. You want to cut off investigations and give the administration a pass. People should be FIRED for the f’ups in Benghazi and security. Most of these people are currently employed in the State Department.
“Stop politicizing the tragic death Americans. If you wanna go after Obama, there are hundreds of issues to chose from but this is not one of them.”
Listen, fool, I am not the one that LIED about the attack. I am not the one that falsely blamed a youtube video and had the filmmaker arrested in the middle of the night by 10 Federal agents, perp-walked before an international gaggle of television crews, thrown into solitary confinement, denied bail, delayed a court appearance until 3 days after the President’s election, and sentenced to a year in jail on an ALLEGED PROBATION VIOLATION. I am a lawyer. THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN TO ANYONE.
It was Obama and his Administration that lied. It was he and his Administration that made it about a video. It was his administration that failed to provide adequate security.
Just remember this: AFTER 9/11, THERE WAS A COMMISSION THAT LOOKED INTO THE ATTACK AND INVESTIGATED THE AGENCIES AND THEIR ROLES. Evidently, THAT wasn’t “politicising” the deaths of 3,000 people.
You’d do your cause much better service if you weren’t such a bloody hypocrite.

Meh. So get Clint Eastwood to run.
And I don’t agree at all with the second part. It may see like the country is different, our adversaries might want us to think that it was different. But the radicals were still around, they were just louder. The country had just elected Carter four years before, and before that LBJ. The media hated Reagan, and there were no alternatives.
People don’t change that much. If we provide better arguments, if we work around the MSM instead of trying to go through them, if we remain united & honest and if our candidates actually understand what they believe and why. Then we can win this thing.
I’ve been very much taken by an article I read a few days ago about how Reagan communicated conservative principles vs. how those tutored by Rove and his ilk communicate them. I believe that if we can get back to unapologetic conservatism we can take our culture and our country back.

OK, Class, notice how The Subject here totally ignores the wording of the 2002 Iraq War Resolution, and then totally ignores the evidence provided that shows the movement of Iraqi WMDs to Syria before the invasion. It also ignores all of the post-invasion translated documents, which prove the WMDs were there.
As for who wanted to invade Iraq, it was Democrat President Bill Clinton who signed the Iraq Liberation Act. And all thru the late 1990s he and his fellow Democrats all said the same thing-Iraq did have WMDs, was in repeated violation of UN sanctions, and was a State Sponsor of terrorism.
PS, in 1998 Democrat President Bill Clinton’s Justice Department also wrote and released a document that you need to read in in its entirety, namely the Federal Indictment of bin Laden. Article 4 specifically cites al Qaeda’s working relationship with Saddam Hussein and the Government of Iraq.

Those were bad intelligence, because there was no evidence that tied AQ to Iraq prior to the invasion. In fact Saddam hated and fought with extremist groups coz they were threat to him as much as they were to us. Clinton never tried to invade Iraq. He did some air-raids but that was about it. Iraq was under severe sanctions which weakened the regime there. There was no need of that war, the only thing it accomplished is that Iran which used to be the #1 enemy of Iraq is now in full control of the Iraqi government.

1)Some people do change a lot. Thomas Sowell was a Marxist from before he was in the army, got a bachelor degree, got a PhD, and worked as a bureaucrat in the federal government. He is both more conservative and a better communicater than any other person noted in this thread.
Reagan was a middle of the road labor union president until prominent members of his union became spokesmen for
stalin’s utopea. For about two years he had weekly five minute talks about government on the radio as an addendum to G E Theater. He had a lot of practice expounding his now conservative views to a wide audiance. He was also governor of CA before he was president.
2)Not being a conservative, Rove does not expound conservative views.

Al-Qaeda Attack Kills American Ambassador on Anniversary of 9/11!
If you’re Barack Obama within eyesight of Election Day 2012, how does that headline sound?
The CIA (and, thus, the Administration) knew Benghazi was a terrorist action almost immediately. Information passed up the intelligence hierarchy to the White House said as much.
Tick, tick, tick…. what happened next?
Susan Rice goes on the talk show circuit, pitching the YouTube video spontaneous demonstration fantasy. [According to the President himself] she was sent by the White House. She “had nothing to do with Benghazi” and, thus, had no independent knowledge (and, apparently, didn’t decide to seek any).
The intelligence data was scrubbed. And a messenger with (implausible) deniability was sent out to spread the White House spin.
There is no need to find THE person who changed the talking points.
Al-Qaeda showing up on 9/11 and killing an Ambassador (who had been pleading for protection, by the way) would have devastated the President’s macho Mission Accomplished swagger moment. The election was days away.
The talking points went in to the White House. They came out of the White House (in the satchel of Susan Rice) without the Al-Qaeda reference. What else do you need to know? Are we looking for Rosemary Woods here or does it matter?
It was clearly a political decision, made by the White House, and handed off to a person who had no personal knowledge of the subject matter (rather than, for instance, an intelligence person, or heaven forbid, Hillary herself, since it was her charge who was killed, along with others), to fly the Administration’s flag before a duped public.
Valarie Jarrett
David Axelrod
Said it before and I still say it. This was signed off on by one or both of these two people, in the White House, with the full knowledge of the President.
Scientifically, the simplest explanation that fits the data is the right one. Same in this case.

Well to be fair, when we engage these bridge-dwellers with Facts, we are also presenting those same Facts to many others here who may not be aware of them. Many people on our side have no idea, for example, about that Federal Indictment I mentioned upstream in this thread from 1998 citing al Qaeda’s ties with Iraq.
And the trolls always wave that PDB warning Bush about an imminent al Qaeda attack in our faces, but never tell us how he could have prevented those attacks.
Funny how they never mention another document, namely an Iraqi government document that we captured in 2003. Legendary blogger Joseph Shahdah, aka “jveritas”, on his own time translated hundreds of those documents, including one from March of 2001 where Iraq discusses attacking the US:

I find it hard to believe anyone would countermand this megalomaniac and not be revealed to the press. I think the little bastard watched these people die and kept his cowardly mouth shut. Isn’t it lovely to see trolls try to distract from Benghazi by bringing up Iraq?
‘It was all about WMDs!!!!’
There is one simple and undeniable fact they overlook: the alliance had a CEASE FIRE with Saddam after Desert Storm, which means that his agreement to COMPLY with the cease fire accords was necessary to move on to a PEACE PROCESS. That war did not END but only had a cease fire and could be restarted at any time by either side.
That did not happen.
The next AUMF was based on Saddam not following his CEASE FIRE agreement which is the HIGHEST FORM OF TREATY THAT CAN BE MADE since it is made UNDER FIRE by the LEADER OF A NATION.
That fact was unalterable no matter WHAT was said by George W. Bush. Read that AUMF and it follows the CEASE FIRE ACCORD VIOLATIONS.
But trolls, of course, don’t bother learning ancient history from way back in 1991-1992. Can’t do that! Takes too much concentration and independent thought.
Ditto learning about the binding quality of cease fire accords.
All you get are talking points… lots and lots of talking points… facts? Actually understanding history, diplomacy and warfare? Nah, they can’t be bothered with learning civilization. They just want to pull it down as they hate civilization and no longer wish to be civilized.
If they loved civilization and being civilized, they would learn these things and stop being trolls.

Actually, there were. In fact, Saddam had used them on his own people and US and British troops removed tonnes of WMD for Iraq.
This is a favorite topic of mine since I listened to every appearance made by Gen.Georges Sada.He was Saddaams’ former Air Force General. Years ago on many talk radio shows, tv shows, other interviews even before Congress Sada spilled his guts about wmds and even wrote a book on it. Sada supervised the flying of over 70 flights of WMD’s into Damascus Syria in two planes. They gutted a 747 and 727 with the seats removed. The rest of the WMD’s were trucked into Syria via tractor trailer with CIA sat. photos available and already published.
So anyone who says there were no WMDs is woefully ignorant.
As far as zero goes regarding the wrong Rice,Val/axel want her for hillary’s replacement so they could have two Manchurians both speaking from the same teleprompter. Remember the Chicago mob runs things, obedience is high on the list.
Rice already proved she is dumb enough to say anything she is told to anyone, any time and over and over if necessary!Stupidity like that is hard to find at the upper levels of govt. She would be the perfect Sec. State for a criminal enterprise.

It is so silly to argue or even discuss whether Obama knew Benghazi was a terrorist attack. He couldn’t help but know even in his inept condition as WH resident.
There’s nothing left to discuss and no need to decipher if the WH is lying. They are.
Now, as to who changed the CIA talking points. Surely someone at the CIA mentioned their talking points were changed at least after they heard Susan Rice LIE to the American people. If Owe didn’t make or authorize the changes – why aren’t we seeing heads rolling down Capitol Hill? Does anyone really think Owe is one to have his orders or authority countermanded without immediate retaliation from Owe?

Obama knew before the attack, he knew during the attack. HE WENT TO BED.
A capable and concerned man would find a way to save his countrymen. Obama showed us exactly who he is.

I didn’t get a chance to jump in on this thread, but thanks ghostwalker1 and Del buddy for always having mind-blowing facts at the ready.
This is one of the things we can expect for many years, is an attempt to constantly introduce Pravda. In Russian, Pravda means “truth”. But it’s a truth crafted by the intelligensia of the state-supported press. Guys like this are constantly attempting to rewrite history and its our duty to nail them constantly on the facts.
When we back them down, it’s inevitable they go ad-hominem on us and use the basics: get your information from talk radio, Fox News, etc. It’s now almost the first thing in their threads now to silence us.
I’m not going into that goodnight. This wasn’t as a monstrous an election they’ve been writing in their Pravda. 83.2% of the counties in the U.S. voted Republican. We have 30 Republican governors. The House held despite 10 seats being reapportioned to Democrat in Illinois and California.
Their Pravda will be to make this a crushing victory that destroys the truth forever and replace it with Pravda. As long as we draw a breath, and we have truth (not Pravda) on our side, we will prevail.

The latest excuse I heard was that we didn’t want to let AQ know that we knew they were involved. Funny how that strategy was not in effect in 2001 or 1941.
“Some airplanes attacked Pearl Harbor today, but we have no idea where they came from.”

The whole point of the two weeks of lying, deceiving, prevarication, was to keep the ball moving so that when Charlie Brown went to kick it, they could say, He is jumping the gun, He is so out of touch, He has a tin ear for foreign policy, He has had the worst two weeks of campaigning ever…I saved a link from September 18th that is not working now, hmmm…in which I noted that ABC news mocked Mitt Romney for having ANY opinion that suggested terrorism on that day. They also mocked his foreign policy speech. That is all well before the Candy Crowly “save” for Obama, and probably back when she also thought they were denying terrorism.

Everyone is kidding me right? I am president of the united states of america and my people are hiding things from me. And one better, I am hiding my head in the sand, in a sort of belt n suspenders move to ensure I learn nothing. Yet Yet I win re election, due in part because I convince enough peeps that I leave no stone unturned and I am on top of everything.

If these liberals could simply read the Iraq War Resolution in which John Kerry, Teddy Kennedy and Hillary Clinton ALL AGREED, Al Qaeda was in Iraq as they voted on going to war.

He’d rather shut down his employer than make concessions to keep his job, and will only seek work for health benefits to supplement his unemployment pay.
Nice set of attitudes. I’m sure employers all across the state will be picking up their phones first thing tomorrow morning.
What a maroon.

Based on hearing him interviewed on Hugh Hewitt’s talk radio show last week, along with his absence from the Presidential press conference, I have to conclude that he’s been too busy promoting a book he authored called “The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor” …

I assume the liars will continue to lie under oath.
Unless there is a John Dean out there, the lies will stand, because the ones around the edge of the real scandal, like Petraeus, seem to be massaging any righteous indignation to avoid being in the cross fire.
So far, I ain’t seeing any heroes. Mainly wimps and snakes
Four dead men count for zilch. And the ones who were rescued are ignored in the hearings, as if they never existed.
As far as the MSM is concerned, there were only four Americans in all of Benghazi
This is the first time in my memory where the survivors of an astounding rescue disappear, and not even their sex, race, gender, employer, nada are revealed. They do not appear with faces covered and voices altered to protect their identities. The press couldn’t find them if they were nailed to the front door of Congress with a sign saying ‘Ask me’.
So goes Rome. When Cicero returned from retirement to protest Marc Anthony, his hands were cut off and displayed as a warning. Each generation has their methods

And liar. You’re dealing with a terrorist RWM.
Yes, Benghazi could have been prevented and Obama has blood on his hands, along with Hillary and all involved.
Stevens had no business, per their own MO, to be in Benghazi on that day. He was there, for official and unofficial reasons, which s/b explained by Obama. Keep askin the question why he was there.

I am confused. Not long ago the discussion was about whether or not the situation room at the White House was monitoring the Benghazi attack in real time. Now the discussion turns to whether or not the president knew it was a terrorist incident within 72 hours.
What am I missing here?

It is always disapponting to see people place faith in Tapper. There is no doubt in my mind that his tough guy stance comes with the full approval of the WH. Dad Tapper is a contributor to PA dems including “council for a livable world” involved with disarmament.

I remember General Sada well. As I recall, the Left vigorously tried to discredit him.
Let’s also not forget that PBS’s “Frontline” did a show at that time where they interviewed another former Iraqi military guy. He said that foreign terrorists were trained how to take over commercial airliners in an old commercial plane parked at the Salman Pak military base. The Left scoffed at those claims as well, even though they came from one of their favorite “news sources”.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, a Democrat Think Tank, al Qaeda is active in at least 100 different countries. But the Left believes the only country on the planet they’re not active in is…Iraq.
(Laughter)

The President of the United States sent out the U.N. Ambassador to lie to the American people. Based on the evidence available there can be no other conclusion. So, why hasn’t he apologized to her and the American people and just say he did it because of the election campaign. Somehow, I don’t believe our free press will be pushing him on this, in fact they’re trying to find a way to sweep this under the rug.

Was Obama briefed that it was a terror attack before sending Rice out?
I don’t know, does he even bother to read the NYT? They got it right.
Of course the Left loves to hold up the NYT as the bastion of truthiness, so why they are defending Obama when their own holiest of holy rags told what the attack was is beyond me.
