Petraeus: The CIA’s initial talking points about Benghazi mentioned Al Qaeda — but the reference was removed
posted at 4:28 pm on November 16, 2012 by Allahpundit
The (former) director of the CIA doesn’t know why the CIA’s finalized talking points omitted a key detail?
Former CIA Director David Petraeus testified in a closed-door hearing Friday morning that his agency determined immediately after the Sept. 11 Libya attack that “Al Qaeda involvement” was suspected — but the line was taken out in the final version circulated to administration officials, according to a top lawmaker who was briefed…
“The original talking points were much more specific about Al Qaeda involvement. And yet the final ones just said indications of extremists,” [Rep. Peter] King said, adding that the final version was the product of a vague “inter-agency process.”
Further, King said a CIA analyst specifically told lawmakers that the Al Qaeda affiliates line “was taken out.”
The obvious suspicion is that the White House or some other political actor up the food chain expunged the Al Qaeda reference because it was inconvenient to the Foreign Policy President’s “I destroyed Al Qaeda” reelection narrative. But Petraeus is no longer beholden to the administration. If that’s what happened, or if it’s what he suspected might have happened, why didn’t he say so today? His reputation had already taken a hit because of the bad early intel from the CIA on Benghazi before anyone knew who Paula Broadwell was. If that intel was actually the product of interference from political forces, he has every reason to clear his name by saying so. Instead, it sounds like he acknowleged today that the CIA did indeed ultimately approve the talking points Rice used that omitted the reference to Al Qaeda. Er, why’d they do that? If someone in a political office was pressuring the CIA to change the document, Petraeus would surely know about it, no?
Meanwhile, in a separate House Intel Committee briefing with DNI James Clapper and acting CIA Director Mike Morell:
Fox News was told that neither Clapper nor Morell knew for sure who finalized [the talking points the White House initially relief on]. And they could not explain why they minimized the role of a regional Al Qaeda branch as well as the militant Ansar al-Sharia despite evidence of their involvement.
The three biggest names in American intelligence still haven’t been able to figure out who removed a key part of an intel finding that’s been hotly disputed in public for two months? That’s like Obama needing an investigation to find out what he did or didn’t order the military to do to rescue Americans pinned down at the CIA annex on the night of the attack. How hard would it be to find this out? Presumably the CIA uses the same basic word processing programs as every other organization; go back through the saved drafts and figure out where the reference to Al Qaeda mysteriously disappeared.
What’s doubly curious about all this is that any of these guys could have simply said, “Well, there were early signs of Al Qaeda involvement but nothing firm enough at the time to warrant inclusion in a statement to the public.” That’s arguably true: Eli Lake reported back on October 1 that U.S. intelligence had intercepted communications during and after the attack between people in Ansar al-Sharia and Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. That’s strong evidence of coordination but maybe not a smoking gun. Since then, U.S. officials have gotten firmer about AQIM’s involvement; there was even a report a few weeks ago about jihadis from Al Qaeda in Iraq possibly being involved. My point, though, is that neither Petraeus, Clapper, nor Morell appears to be defending the agency on grounds that the early intel wasn’t ripe enough yet. It sounds from King and Fox’s report like they’re kinda sorta conceding that, yeah, maybe the Al Qaeda reference shouldn’t have been removed. Petraeus, in fact, seems to have taken the attitude this morning that the attack was obviously terrorism from the get-go. Or maybe all of this is just King’s/Fox’s interpretation of more complex answers they gave? This is why public hearings would be useful.
Update:Daniel Halper at the Standard. Intelligence sources were whispering about the Al Qaeda omission to Stephen Hayes weeks ago. That’s how suspicious they were of it:
One thing that has troubled both intelligence officials and those on Capitol Hill as they have evaluated the administration’s early response to the attacks is what appears to be an effort to write al Qaeda out of the story. For example, the talking points first reported by Lake, include this sentence: “There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations.” But according to several officials familiar with the original assessment from which the talking points were derived, the U.S. intelligence community had reported the fact that these were extremists with ties to al Qaeda. That key part was omitted.

Orwell was a labor socialist…Many of these labor socialists were dis-enchanted during the Spanish Civil War and WWII.
They had a romantic vision of the Russian Revolution because the socialist propaganda combined with their willful blindness prevented them from accepting the facts of the consequences of Marxism.
This is the problem with zealots…Adams saw it but it took decades for Jefferson to admit Adams was right.
Orwell regained his skepticism and his criticism of Tyranny is his legacy…But he also drank heavily to ummmm…manage.
Progressives love these books because it allows them a handy vehicle to name an enemy…But they miss entirely the problemo.
It’s not new.

I think the Republicans are playing into Democrat hands by constantly complaining about the promotion of Sarah Hall Ingram, former head of the IRS tax exempt division, to head up the IRS’s administration of Obamacare. Instead they should be focused on how the IRS entity as a whole, which would include any of the “low level rogues” the Democrats are trying to put the blame on, is untrustworthy and incapable of overseeing the implementation or administration of Obamacare. If the Democrats want to use the excuse that low level underlings were to blame then let’s make sure they never have the same opportunity again to target conservative groups in their position of power in the IRS.
The individual pursuit of Ingram as “the one in charge” gives Obama an easy out. He can fire her and then proclaim, as always, “It’s time to move on”.
He can’t fire the IRS. Wise up GOP, make them the target. Better yet, insist the IRS be removed from administering Obamacare. Do we really need an American gestapo prying into our private lives?

Orwell was fighting the class system as much as anything else…For Brits it’s this class system that is at the heart of their confusion.
This is why socialism is doomed in America and always will be as long as Americans hold onto their fundamental American Nature…We rebelled against the Class System…We built a legal system to ensure individual rights granted to each of us by our creator.
We are messy to our cousins…But Liberty is always a bit messy.

They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening. By lack of understanding they remained sane. dogsoldier on May 19, 2013 at 11:08 AM
maybe..
but it feels more organic to me.. the hubris of the self inflated reacting in outrage that a mere mortal QUESTION them…. gasp…
I’ve seen that in people before.. usually someone affluent caught shop lifting.. the self righteous rage at the indignity of it.. till the cops get there and their pockets were turned out..
then.. it was usually tears..
“You ruined my life”… wavering finger pointed.. ah well no.. it was my job, and rich thieves offended me on a much higher scale, than survival thieves ever did..
I can admit it now, but we caught a young lady putting formula in her purse, not an unusual item to take, it’s expensive, and there is a black market in it. The catch was as we walked her up front her older child was at the waiting area near the door with a baby carrier next to her. and yes, the baby was hungry..
Gut check time..
So we did the only thing that let us sleep at night, I had a toddler and infant at home myself.. so we rounded up the entire front end staff, and we passed the hat,.. bought what she took plus three more cans, and then a 40 dollar food gift card.. with this admonishment.. We know where you are Miss, really, don’t do this again, you’ll loose your babies.. and if you ever have dire need again.. talk to us..
we’ll find a way..
she never stole again..
off topic sure.. but, of 31 years watching, studying people, learning the meanings of even minor inflections, facial tics.. you become pretty adept at reading what is going through somebodies mind.. their mood if nothing else, but often, a type of thought becomes common to a particular reaction, or set or reactions.. a kind of sense.. a vibe.. cops learn it.. some teachers.. parents.. anyone who works with a lot of people..
The vibe I get, is the outrage is genuine.. because they really think they did nothing wrong.. which tells you a lot about their moral compass.

If we can’t police even the lowest clerks working at IRS then everyone in the department is a potential law-breaker. It’s an impossible task to monitor all of them, leaving only two solutions.
1. Prohibit the IRS in it’s entirety from administering Obamacare.
So then, who’s left that we can trust to administer it? Nobody.
2. Repeal Obamacare.

I’d only modify that first one to be something like “Eliminate the IRS entirely.” Time to kill it and replace it with something incredibly simple and impossible to politicize. No exemptions, no exceptions, no withholding, no employer portion, 10% flat tax across the board, file on a postcard and send your payment in monthly.
Simple. People will also gain a new understanding of how much they actually pay. And it’ll help starve the beast all at the same time.

1. The biggest and best used both on the IRS scandal and Benghazi is let’s make sure it never happens again Pfeiffer/axelJr. used this one four or five times I lost count his cadence is so quick.
2.The “its under investigation, we can’t comment” once again used by a supposed independent investigation of the IRS debacle and the FBI investigation at Benghazi no one believes either one but they still use it.
3.It’s all Issas’ fault, they blame Daryl Issa on everything saying he had advance knowledge of the IRS debacle and they knew nothing. Tough sell but they still sell it anyway.
4.He’s a Bush appointee–any time they can find someone Bush appointed evidently anything that guy does even though he’s now working for ozero his misdeeds are all due to Bush it’s all Bush’s fault ever heard that one?
5.The doctored e-mails are all the fault of the CIA, not us. Once again tough to sell but they keep trying.
6. It’s All Republicans fault–”they are trying to drag us into the swamp.” A bit of hypocrisy here but they will sell anything if the public will buy.

Dude is amazing. I wonder if his back, knees, and mouth ever get sore.

““The real power, the power we have to fight for night and day, is not power over things, but over men.’ He paused, and for a moment assumed again his air of a schoolmaster questioning a promising pupil: ’How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?’
Winston thought. ’By making him suffer,’ he said.
’Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own?
Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing. Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined.
A world of fear and treachery is torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon,a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself.
Progress in our world will be progress towards more pain. The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice.
Ours is founded upon hatred.
In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement.
Everything else we shall destroy everything. Already we are breaking down the habits of thought which have survived from before the Revolution.
We have cut the links between child and parent, and between man and man, and between man and woman. No one dares trust a wife or a child or a friend any longer.
But in the future there will be no wives and no friends. Children will be taken from their mothers at birth, as one takes eggs from a hen. The sex instinct will be eradicated. Procreation will be an annual formality like the renewal of a ration card. We shall abolish the orgasm. Our neurologists are at work upon it now. There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be
no love, except the love of Big Brother. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. There will be no art, no literature, no science. When we are omnipotent we shall have no more need of science.
There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness.
There will be no curiosity,no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed.” – Orwell, 1984

I know this is hard, but the only solution to this is to ignore HAL, for some reason ,trolls have special privileges here and don’t get banned very often.
Yes, I’ve been guilty of responding as well, sometimes smacking trolls is fun, but HAL has shown itself to be a liar, ill-informed, and incapable of actual serious dialog — it only regurgitates talking points. If we all just ignore it, it will either start posting more outrageous stuff to the point of rising to the troll-ban threshold or it will go away.
HAL-cot; it’s hijacked enough threads.

And I get what you were saying.
I just wanted to point out that what is illegal now will be required. And those of us who resist the illegal, Constitution violating law will be considered lawbreakers.
davidk on May 19, 2013 at 11:39 AM
We are both probably correct. It will vary from one member of the regime to the next. I’m sure some of them will be exactly as you say. My experience runs the other way. I’ve known quite a few who knew what they were doing and acted that way when caught.
I have to second this request. IMHO HAL crossed the line and needs to go.
dogsoldier on May 19, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Once in a great while a troll gets banned. I wouldn’t mind if HAL/HotLips goes.
22044 on May 19, 2013 at 11:41 AM
HAL, you prove better than anyone else could, what a f*cking imbecile you are.
Have you seen anyone here say anything critical of John Kerry before? Harry Reid? Timothy Geithner? How about that IRS f*ck that testified Friday? Any white libs, catching conservative flack from HA folks before?
And you’re still stupid enough to make the statement you just made?
Holy shit, you’re one seriously dumb f*ckwit.

already busted.. someone checked his political donations..
all to Obama..
so he is no republican, just a career name on a list passed down the chain. The GOP doesn’t do mass apointments based on their donations, I doubt anyone in Bush’s team even checked, just asked for career civil service names and assuming they were professional enough not to be the left wing hacks they turned out to be..
now obama..
he made damn sure every DOJ lawyer hired had a hard left track record, we know that for sure.
mark81150 on May 19, 2013 at 11:41 AM
Pfeiffer is on an audio loop?
On IRS targeting: ‘The law is irrelevant.’
On Bengazi: ‘It is irrelevant who changed the talking points.’
Quick! Check public records to determine if BO legally changed his name to ‘Irrelenant Obama’!
socalcon on May 19, 2013 at 11:42 AM
I agree.
dogsoldier on May 19, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Agreed.
Currently 73,954 pages of tax code. At it’s inception there were 400 pages. This is what comes from a congress cram-packed full of lawyers passing tax laws.
fogw on May 19, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Arguably, what should be HAL’s ‘tombstone’ post.
socalcon on May 19, 2013 at 11:45 AM
I propose we create a permanent sticky thread where all the trolls and anti-trolls can go and yell at each other and waste each other’s time.
That way we’d keep these threads clean of all the juvenile nonsense and stay somewhat centered to the topic at hand.
aquaviva on May 19, 2013 at 11:50 AM
Remember him front row and center questioning Bush at a White House presser in the midst of the Iraq war?
Gregory falls under the same category as Obama. Easy to hate.
fogw on May 19, 2013 at 11:50 AM
So HAL thinks that all dissenters of the regime must be silenced by any means necessary. He says that the dissenters are the minority so they have no say and must be eliminated. Yet, he is the minority here and is allowed to spew whatever vile things he wants to say and is not silenced. If one of us went on huffpo or kos we would be gone in a NY minute, because they are so Tolerant. It boggles the mind.
