CBS: CIA talking points for Rice never mentioned terrorism

posted at 1:01 pm on November 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

It seems interesting this CBS scoop comes shortly before both the current and former directors of the CIA will testify as to what they know about the terrorist attack on our consulate and CIA annex in Benghazi.  Why, it’s almost as if someone at the White House or State Department wanted to follow up on Barack Obama’s defense of Susan Rice during yesterday’s press conference and pre-empt any potential fallout from whatever Mike Morell and David Petraeus have to say today and tomorrow.

Naah.  I’m sure this is just another in the series of amazing coincidences regarding timing of revelations over the last nine weeks in the Benghazi story.

CBS News has obtained the CIA talking points given to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on Sept. 15 regarding the fatal attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, four days earlier. CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan says the talking points, which were also given to members of the House intelligence committee, make no reference to terrorism being a likely factor in the assault, which left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead.

Rice, who was considered a likely nominee to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, has been attacked by Republican lawmakers for saying on “Face the Nation” (video) on Sept. 16 that all indications were the attack “began spontaneously” – suggesting it likely sprang from a protest against an anti-Muslim video found on the Internet. Protests of that nature had been seen in other Muslim nations in the days and weeks before the Benghazi attack.

“Available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault… There are indications that extremists participated,” read the CIA’s talking points.

This probably works better as a defense for Rice than claiming she never said that the attack sprang from a spontaneous demonstration, which CBS rebuts tacitly while Sean Higgins demolishes it in detail for the Washington Examiner.  If that’s what the CIA told her, and she had no access to any other information, then it does explain why Rice told a false story about what turned out to be a terrorist attack from the very beginning … on the anniversary of 9/11, no less.

Why wouldn’t she have had access to other information?  Because Rice had no operational responsibility for anything other than relations with the United Nations.  So why did the “White House,” as Obama put it yesterday, ask her to go on five talk shows on Sunday to impart this story to the media and the public?  That request had to come from Obama himself, and it bypassed other more likely candidates for that assignment such as Tom Donilon, James Clapper, Hillary Clinton, or David Petraeus, all of whom had some responsibility for the incident.  And here’s a related question — why didn’t those five media outlets raise that very question when the “White House” offered Rice as a spokesperson for that explanation?  Didn’t that seem even a little curious – especially when the Libyan President was saying exactly the opposite?

But, didn’t Obama tell us in the 2nd debate that he said it was terrorism from Day One? And, didn’t he say yesterday that the White House sent Rice on the 5 Sunday shows? Why wouldn’t the White House have approved of the talking points first?

Surely, if the The-Smartest-Man-In-The-World-Room-Phonebox™ had known and said that Benghazi was a terrorist attack in the Rose Garden on 12 September 2012, his White House wouldn’t have sent the Ambassador to the United Nations out to blame it on a video. Seems to me that by clearing Susan Rice they are condemning themselves. Obama claimed that he referred to “acts of terror” in the Rose Garden.

They can waffle all they want, but the Administration was caught red-handed lying to the American people, and Obama doubled down smugly in the second presidential debate on the claim that he did recognize it as acts of terror just one day later.

So if he sent Susan Rice out to say otherwise, he still takes responsibility for telling her to say one thing was true when he knew better.

For those having trouble understanding those old-fashioned moral standards, this is called lying.

tom on November 15, 2012 at 1:28 PM

It’s called plausible deniability.

If Rice had no alternative access to information and had “nothing to do with Benghazi,” she could say whatever she was told without repercussion. And, more importantly for the WH, the facade could be maintained.

The only problem in this case is, the deniability isn’t plausible.

Thus, a new term is coined, Laughable Deniability.

“CBS News has obtained the CIA talking points given to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on Sept. 15 regarding the fatal attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, four days earlier.”

And those talking points were typed up and handed to Rice by whom? I can print an official looking CIA memo from my desk at home.

Funny how no one seems able to find the order President “Come after me, biotches!” claims he gave on the evening of Sept 11, 2012 to do all that was necessary to protect American personnel in Libya. Nor does anyone seem able to find a single still photo, video image, email, or written transcript from the Whitehouse Situation Room that same evening.

I don’t think the little bastard issued any such order. In fact, I think it was the little bastard himself who gave the stand down command. Obama is a megalomaniac. There is no way in the world he’d allow anyone to countermand his orders.

If Gen Patraeus wants to save his soul and what little honor he has left, he needs to tell the intelligence committees exactly what happened when he testifies tomorrow.

They paraded Rice out there because she had no organizational responsibility for Benghazi and so, if the party line were to be shown to be false, she could blame it on her intelligence briefing without being charged with incompetence or lying.

They knew the movie meme was flimsey. Shillary endorsed it at first, but then quickly backed off. Chances are, she refused to push it on the Sunday shows.

There is something else here that they’re trying to hide and it goes beyond the attack itself because they’ve twisted themselves into pretzels with all of this spin. There is some nugget that if it were known would be the “aha” moment wherein everything else that’s happened (the attack itself, the lack of military response, the subsequent killings and the meme that the admin. put out there almost immediately after the attack) would make sense.

An explanation for the events as we know them right now should be pretty straight forward yet the admin continues to try and muck things up by sending out conflicting information. They are trying furiously to cover something up and my gut says that the attack and it’s aftermath aren’t it. It has to be something much deeper and if discovered would paint Obama is a very poor light indeed – hence the struggle to protect him at all costs.

Give me a break with this whole “why did Obama offer rice to the talk shows” bs. Isn’t it obvious that he was considering her for sos and this was an audition?

red_herring on November 15, 2012 at 1:50 PM

I think the opposite is equally true. Susan Rice, a partisan whore with no integrity, knowingly lied her ass off on five Sunday talk shows because she wanted to become SecState. There was a lot of talk yesterday about how unusual it is for the same person to hit five of these shows. Wouldn’t Rice be a bit curious as to why she was the only one being pushed in front of the cameras? But, of course, she knew. You lie for me about this and I’ll make you SecState.

Isn’t there anyone in this press corps interested in anything any more?

bflat879 on November 15, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Yes making sure to cover up for obama…

sandee on November 15, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Those talking points may be on CIA stationary, but I’d be very surprised if they weren’t scripted by the same WH that sent Rice to the TV networks to advance them.

petefrt on November 15, 2012 at 2:02 PM

< It's the cover up, stupid!

Occam’s Razor
The simplest explanation is usually the right one.
You’re all grasping at straws; trying to find an “American” explanation to all of Obama’s actions.
The occupier of the White House and his minions are anti-American and are executing a long-term plan to destroy the capitalist system
and replace it with a Marxist one.
Only problem in their way is that we are a well armed society and some of us will be willing to fight to preserve the Republic and the Constitution.
Time would be better spent creating and organizing the New Constitution Party or the Founders Party…pick a name and organize it. Get it registered in your states and register Constitutionally conservative voters.
Fight the NWO Statists and Banksters.
The Founders were fiscally conservative and socially liberal with very high moral and ethical beliefs.
Liberty and freedom: These should be the basis of the new Party.
In the end, it may take bloodshed to save the Republic.
Good luck to us all.

When were those talking points given to Susan Rice and did anything change before she went on the Sunday shows..? Was there any opposing reports from other agencies that were ignored..?

d1carter on November 15, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Ya Know…..

It is almost like there is no one in control at all.

well,,,,,

Every thing points to the fact no one seems to be in control.

well,,,,

oops its worse

Obama is in control.

APACHEWHOKNOWS on November 15, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Didn’t Obama say yesterday that Rice was following his orders?

kingsjester on November 15, 2012 at 1:11 PM

Nope, he said the “White House” sent her out there.

forest on November 15, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Bad White House. Bad. Now go out and tell the American people you are sorry.

*adds to list of things to do* Remember to get the White House auto-pilot checked before next flight to Las Vegas.

Lily on November 15, 2012 at 2:07 PM

When Dear Leader says the White House sent her out there, he means Val Jarrett…

d1carter on November 15, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Suggestion:

Just let the msm make it up themselves on the fly.
