Open thread: Obama’s first press conference in five months

posted at 12:51 pm on November 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Just when was Barack Obama’s last open press conference, anyway?  You have to go all the way back to June of this year, nearly five months ago, to find the last time that the Leader of the Free World planned an event where the media could question him.  Obama ducked into a press briefing in August unannounced in order to take a couple of shots at Todd Akin and actually deigned to take a couple of questions, which prompted this legendary riposte from ABC’s Jake Tapper:

“Don’t be a stranger!”

Today, the stranger returns at 1:30 ET (or so), and Politico thinks that Obama will face “tough questions”:

This is not what the White House wanted for President Barack Obama’s first news conference of his second term.

He won’t be able to dwell much on his stronger-than-expected victory or even press his agenda for the next four years. Instead, he’ll be diverted by a Washington sex scandal.

The fallout from former CIA Director David Petraeus’s extramarital affair has spawned the type of sensational media feeding frenzy that Obama detests. But when he holds his first full-scale news conference in eight months Wednesday, Obama will have to explain how he plans to re-create his national security team, what he knows about the burgeoning scandal and why he didn’t get wind of it sooner.

That may well be what the press will ask, but those won’t be “tough” questions; they’ll be easily parried by claiming that he can’t comment on investigations into personal matters.  A tough question would focus on what happened in Benghazi before, during, and after the terrorist attack that sacked our consulate.  Politico’s list of seven questions only has one on that topic, the same number as they offer on marijuana.  No, I am not kidding.     Nor do I think Politico is off the mark here; we’re probably going to hear more about Petraeus than J. Christopher Stevens, the first Ambassador to die in the line of duty in 33 years, or the other three Americans who died trying to protect him and others in the terrorist attack.

We’ll see soon enough.  What questions would you like answered?  Feel free to offer them in the comments section.  If I can find a live embed code for the presser, I’ll update the post.

You know, I just figured out what Dear Leader needs to when the economy crashes. Just appoint someone to head up an investigation. Then he doesn’t have to comment on it.

What tough questions? None are tough when the answers are written on the prompter. Questions are submitted by journalists and they are numbered and edited. The prompter is set up to answer the numbered question. This was all brought to light when a journalist changed their question and Obama read the answer to the original question. The journalist was not invited to the next session. I thought everyone was aware of this.

Obama probably told the press he won’t answer any questions about Benghazi and the press said… What’s a Benghazi?

James on November 14, 2012 at 2:00 PM

It sounds like Obama just hinted(even if it was subconsciously) at what’s coming. He said he doesn’t want to end up in 6 months having to sock it to the middle class or families with disabled kids. Which is exactly what’ll happen when the deficit is so out of control that he has to raise taxes on everyone and cut programs for the needy. Now he just has to figure out how to blame it on Republicans.

I’m not going to comment on nominations but Susan Rice is just wonderful and professional. Throws down the gauntlet to John McCain and Lindsey Graham. It’s outrageous for them to go after Susan Rice.

d1carter on November 14, 2012 at 2:05 PM

will we now have a war between McCain, Graham, Ayotte….and the WH! I’d take him up on that. He did send Rice out to do the 5 media shows.

Wow, he’s doubling down on Rice. Now calling Ed Henry.

CoffeeLover on November 14, 2012 at 2:05 PM

So if Susan Rice had nothing to do with Behghazi (true statement) why was she the one to go on five Sunday talk shows and not the fat pig that runs the State Department?

Susan Rice lied her ass off with the promise of the SecState job. She has no integrity and the GOP is right to go out after her and the rat-eared traitor too.

AND that includes all their property, accounts, foundation money, everything.

Put Warren Buffet and Bill Gates and Oprah all out on the street corner and let them beg for money.

And while we’re at it. After the Federal government takes everything they own. Institute a special surtax that will tax anyone that ever had $200,000 in annual gross income a special 90% tax rate for life so they NEVER GET TO BE RICH AGAIN.

….and yet this would STILL NOT SATISFY the Progressives.
