Open thread: Obama’s first press conference in five months

posted at 12:51 pm on November 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Just when was Barack Obama’s last open press conference, anyway?  You have to go all the way back to June of this year, nearly five months ago, to find the last time that the Leader of the Free World planned an event where the media could question him.  Obama ducked into a press briefing in August unannounced in order to take a couple of shots at Todd Akin and actually deigned to take a couple of questions, which prompted this legendary riposte from ABC’s Jake Tapper:

“Don’t be a stranger!”

Today, the stranger returns at 1:30 ET (or so), and Politico thinks that Obama will face “tough questions”:

This is not what the White House wanted for President Barack Obama’s first news conference of his second term.

He won’t be able to dwell much on his stronger-than-expected victory or even press his agenda for the next four years. Instead, he’ll be diverted by a Washington sex scandal.

The fallout from former CIA Director David Petraeus’s extramarital affair has spawned the type of sensational media feeding frenzy that Obama detests. But when he holds his first full-scale news conference in eight months Wednesday, Obama will have to explain how he plans to re-create his national security team, what he knows about the burgeoning scandal and why he didn’t get wind of it sooner.

That may well be what the press will ask, but those won’t be “tough” questions; they’ll be easily parried by claiming that he can’t comment on investigations into personal matters.  A tough question would focus on what happened in Benghazi before, during, and after the terrorist attack that sacked our consulate.  Politico’s list of seven questions only has one on that topic, the same number as they offer on marijuana.  No, I am not kidding.     Nor do I think Politico is off the mark here; we’re probably going to hear more about Petraeus than J. Christopher Stevens, the first Ambassador to die in the line of duty in 33 years, or the other three Americans who died trying to protect him and others in the terrorist attack.

We’ll see soon enough.  What questions would you like answered?  Feel free to offer them in the comments section.  If I can find a live embed code for the presser, I’ll update the post.

Is he saying don’t go after Susan Rice, whom I sent out to lie to you, go after me, because I said it was a terrorist attack on the 2nd day? Check the transcript. And, by the way, I can’t talk about it, because I’m withholding judgement until after the investigation is complete.

Bronco Bama is talking in circles and the WH Press Corps is nodding in agreement.

From Thursday, 9 August 2012 to Friday, 9 November 2012, the national debt increased by $328,894,249,547.79 ($328.9 BILLION).

That’s 13 weeks or $25,299,557,657.52 ($25.3 BILLION) per week.

That’s 93 days or $3,536,497,306.97 ($3.5 BILLION) per day.

That’s 2,232 hours or $147,354,054.46 ($147.4 MILLION) per hour.

That’s 133,920 minutes or $2,455,900.91 ($2.5 MILLION) per minute.

That’s 8,035,200 seconds or $40,931.68 per second.

That’s $1,060.95 each for every man, woman and child in America…in just 93 days.

To put that into perspective and assuming no behavioural changes, increases in debt service costs, and increases in government spending (IOW, completely unrealistic assumptions):

Increasing the 25/28/33/35 tax brackets to 28/31/36/39.6 will raise:

FY2013: $40 billion or 11.43 days of government funding.

FY2013-2014: $95 billion or 27.14 days of government funding.

FY2013-2022: $730 billion or 208.57 days of government funding.

Go ahead and raise taxes on the “evil rich,” if it will make you feel better. I just don’t care anymore. Any revenue impact will be negligible, but the costs to employees will be painful. The country has a SPENDING problem. Period. Story. End of.

As for the GOP, it should either go off the fiscal cliff or give Obama everything that he wants and every hour of every day for the next 4 years remind the country that Obama and Democrats OWN the new recession. Republicans warned about, predicted the failure of and voted against the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Stimulus Act of 2009 en masse and en banc. It did fail and the majority of Americans continue to believe that it failed; hence, the banishment of the very word and the new hotness of “investments.” No “compromises.” Don’t put your name on anything.

As for the conservatives, who stayed home last week, you have forfeited your right to complain. Just S/T/F/U, already!

As for my fellow libertarians, who voted for that winnah, Gary Johnson, congratulations on your meaningless protest vote! Light up a doobie, bro, and tune into Alex Jones. I think he’ll be talking about transhumanism and Rick Perry’s plot to takeover the world today. You’re idiots.

As for my fellow Americans, who voted for the vulgar, hateful, ignorant, and irresponsible child in the White House, “[I] ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were [my] countrymen.” By the way, you stupid, stupid, very stupid f*cks (yeah, I’m looking at you, tommyhawk), your share of the national debt is now $52,402.29.

You’re living in fantasy land. This is not the same as the first 9/11. Unless of course you’re a truther who thinks Bush was involved somehow. Once those planes hit the towers, all flights were grounded, and the order was even given to shoot down Flight 93 if necessary in order to prevent any additional casualties on the ground. So they may have been caught with their pants down initially, but they regrouped and did everything they could to minimize the damage that day.

With Benghazi, we’re talking about an attack that lasted over 7 hours and the President and his security team knew in real time that it was going on from nearly the beginning. Yet nothing was ever done to try to rescue the people under fire at the consulate. The only assistance they received was from 2 Seals who reportedly defied orders and went in there to try to hold off the terrorists.

The Bush Administration tried to deal with the crisis as best they could. The Obama Administration did nothing and may have even gone further by ordering those Seals to stand down and not help out. The latter is an impeachable offense and should disqualify anyone from holding the office of Commander-in-Chief.

So, did the Presidential Daily Brief (PDB) tell us exactly where, how and when OBL was going to strike? No. Unlike the attack on the American Embassy in Cairo, were there any prior threats naming the specific target and method in newspapers or on websites? No. Unlike the attack in Benghazi, which was just the most recent of dozens, had there been any other prior threats made with specific targets named?

Should we have grounded all planes? All trains? Stopped work at all ports? Closed all malls, sporting events, and skyscrapers lest biological or chemical agents be introduced into the ventilation systems? Shut down all universities, governmental buildings, hospitals, factories and other structures with mass capacity?

Should we have closed down nuclear power plants, water processing plants, electrical facilities, and all other utilities? We probably should have shut down interstate commerce, the interstate highway system and banned all heavy trucks and SUVs, which could be used as car bombs.

It probably would have been prudent, since no specifics were given in the PDB, to order all Americans to bubblewrap their homes, drink only boiled water, eat only foods that they grow, remain indoors listening to Alex Jones after receiving a bevy of immunisations or just plain kill themselves.

After George Bush had issued all of those Executive Orders protecting Americans from every conceivable danger, he then could have sent Congress home, revoked habeas corpus as Abraham Lincoln did, declared martial law, and instituted laws like Woodrow Wilson did that criminalised criticism and protest of the government and its national security and defence actions, including making war. In fact, people making antiwar statements at their own dinner tables could be charged under the Espionage Act…just like during the Progressive administration of President Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat.

So, while we waited for Osama’s “determined strike,” we could have just destroyed our Constitution, civil liberties, civil society, and economy….thereby rendering any attack by al Qaeda unnecessary.

Yes, I’m sure that you would have applauded Shrub, if he had taken all of those actions on unactionable intelligence in a PDB.
