Breaking: Petraeus to testify on Benghazi attacks; Update: Petraeus offered testimony

posted at 9:12 am on November 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

So far this is only a breaking headline at Fox News, but the word on Twitter is that former CIA Director David Petraeus has agreed to testify in both House and Senate intelligence committee hearings about the terrorist attack that killed four Americans and sacked our consulate in Benghazi.  That reverses the previous announcements that Petraeus would decline to testify and have acting DCI Michael Morell handle Congress in his stead.

We’ll add more as the story develops.  This probably won’t mean any big surprises in the Benghazi story line, but it will give Congress an opening to demand answers on how the White House decided to push the spontaneous-movie-review meme for so long in the face of the overwhelming data that the attack was both deliberate and well-planned, with paramilitary forces, materiel, and tactics.

Fox does have a story link up, but with little detail as of yet.

Update: Fox reports that Petraeus initiated the agreement to talk with the committees, but at least one of these will be off-site and presumably behind closed doors:

After Petraeus’ resignation, lawmakers complained that the scandal was no reason they shouldn’t hear from the man at the helm of the CIA when CIA operatives came under attack alongside State Department employees in Benghazi last month.

The logistics of Petraeus’ appearance are still being worked out. But a source close to Petraeus said the former four-star general has contacted the CIA, as well as committees in both the House and Senate, to offer his testimony as the former CIA director.

Fox News has learned he is expected to speak off-site to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Friday about his Libya report.  The House side is still being worked out.

Last night’s Fox News Special Report has a pretty good rundown of the kind of questions Petraeus is likely to face — especially what his role might have been in briefing Susan Rice before her appearances on five Sunday talk shows to push the false “spontaneous demonstration” story.

Keep in mind this fact: no matter what GP says in testimony, Obama will be shown to have lied to the American people.

1) If GP says there was bad intel which led him to inform Obama that it was a YouTube video, then Obama’s claim to the American people at the debate, in which he said that his Rose Garden speech proved he believed it was an act of terror, will have been a lie.

2) If GP testifies that he knew it was a pre-planned terror attack within hours, as other intel leaks from both State and CIA show, then Obama will have lied to the American people about this having anything to do with the video.

There is literally no way for Obama to escape his lie, because he’s taken both sides of the debate agressively. Now whether that will mean anything to the Press, Congress, or the American people, we’ll see. If I had to guess, GP will say he fed bad intell to Obama to make him think it was the YT video. That will make Obama a liar at the debate, but that’s the lesser of two lies, and will allow the Press to sweep the cover-up under the rug, and move on to the sex part of this horrible story.

Weight of Glory on November 14, 2012 at 10:07 AM

As for 1) we have had proof that he lied about his Rose Garden statement when CBS released an excerpt from their 9/12 interview 2 days before the election.

You want the truth? Ridicule the corrupt media that hides it.

Fox just said he “voluntarily” agreed to testify. I wonder if voluntarily was his exact word. It is joke in the military people are volunteered to do something.

I fear he is still being blackmailed. Now it appears they are going after Broadwell as leverage against Petraeus.

My guess is Petraeus will testify giving the Senate exactly what the White House wants him to say.

I can’t tell you how many liberals I know that still think that Scooter Libby was found guilty of outing her (instead of obstruction of justice). They only care about getting to the truth when it involves a Democrat. Otherwise, they are quite happy to push lies as the mainstream story.

Don’t get me started on that! Colin Powell knew where the “leak” occurred and that Fitzgerald spent two million investigating even though he knew exactly what had happened. And yet now we have one of the four most corrupt administration’s in history and can’t even get traction on the most serious aspects of the crimes against America.

I swear the rat-eared wonder could perform a human sacrifice during his next State of the Union speech and he’d still get a pass while you’d have “conservative” pundits out there lecturing the GOP that they needed to be more inclusive of those who believe in human sacrifice if they are to win elections in the future.

Night Owl on November 14, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Never going to happen. Boehner will never be president, that kind of talk is pie-in-the-sky. If it got so crazy that they were both up for a Senate vote for impeachment, all Dingy Harry would have to do is pause for a moment between the two processes for a quick vote on a nomination for a replacement for either of them.

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer on Tuesday said the White House used David Petraeus’s affair to get the CIA director to give testimony about the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that was in line with the administration’s position on the matter.

Appearing on Fox News’s Special Report, Krauthammer said, “The sword was lowered on Election Day”

So one of three hings will happen with Petraeus’ testimony:

1. He can tell the truth
2. He can ‘test-a-lie’ and parrot whatever the WH tells him
3. He can plead the fifth

If it’s number three, that is pure CYA and he is still over some kind of (WH) barrel.

If it is number two, he is either still over a barrel or an outright accessory to Benghazi.

If he opts for number one, the ‘General Betray-us’ media dogs are waiting to cover for the WH along with whatever else the vindictive administration can throw at him. My advice in this case would be to watch your six, General.

I’m really twisted about Petraeus. No doubt, he deserves for his fieldwork to be listed among America’s great generals. He came up with tactics that allowed us to win an insurgency, thought impossible by most military analysts. I’m sure he could have won Vietnam. He’s no desk general, he’s led men into combat and has a son in the military. His policies could have been his death.

Having said that, it’s a statement of the corruption of Washington. It eats good people alive. Others have survived it. He didn’t.

Now comes the test; will he tell the truth? No matter what they’ve threatened him with, will he put his hand on the bible and swear to tell the truth? If his oath to protect and defend the Constitution means anything, I really hope so.

McCain, Graham, and Ayotte call for a special select committee to investigate Benghazi…Harry Reid…Ben who?

d1carter on November 14, 2012 at 11:41 AM

This article nails it, step by step:

Petraeus did what he could from his new post, including working to get Afghan and Pakistani authorities to cooperate against the Taliban, but Obama had other plans for a man whose skill and prestige he needed but whom he also saw as a possible political rival.

When Obama clashed with the general then in charge of Afghanistan in 2010, he persuaded Petraeus to take over. Once again, Petraeus turned the situation around — until Obama suddenly announced that Petraeus was leaving Afghanistan to head the CIA.

The move was inexplicable — like removing Dwight Eisenhower shortly after D-Day to head the OSS instead — except as a ploy to keep Petraeus from getting credit for a victory in Afghanistan as well as Iraq. Now, a year later, we’re getting neither: Iraq is once again degenerating into an al Qaeda haven, and Obama will, in effect, abandon the Afghans to the Taliban by 2014.

Meanwhile, David Petraeus was sidelined to a job he was neither trained nor suited for, as his indiscretions with his biographer-turned-mistress have shown.

Now he’s almost certainly going to be made the scapegoat for the intelligence failures in Benghazi, as well — while we’re left with two lost wars, a major scandal and a broken hero whose talents were squandered and achievements tarnished.

Five will get you Ten, Ms. Broadwell didn’t even write those “oh my- threatening emails”. She’s been asked to “cooperate” as well.

(She does have toned arms, even better than Moochie though)

FlaMurph on November 14, 2012 at 11:51 AM

Did he tell the truth?

Per ABC, That four-hour search of Broadwell’s home was to collect classified documents “taken from secure government buildings” according to Broadwell. This would include the classified material discovered on her laptop; the searching probably looked for more of the same or similar. (Why the agents turned the lights out during the searching is a bit of a mystery to me.)

The government demanded the documents back, she consented to the the visit to get them. We may never know what they consisted of.

According to ABC charges are being considered but it might also be handled as a disciplinary action, as she did have clearance to review classified materials because of her status in the reserve.

I want to know what she took, where she got it, why did she have it, how did she use it? And I wonder if her access to Petraeus gave her access to the documents she might otherwise not have had, even if he specifically did not “give” them to her.

Apparently, per CBS, in her poison-pen capacity Broadwell was not only sending her creepmail, she was sending creepy anonymous messages to various high-ranking military officials warning them against the temptress Jill Khawam-Kelley, including General Allen, her frequent correspondent. He told Kelley about the receipt of the anonymous warning against her.

SarahW on November 14, 2012 at 11:51 AM

Broadwell’s Denver lecture showboating her handle on the hot topic of Benghazi let slip something that has been corroborated by other sources despite agency denials, namely the prisoner issue as a cause of the attack.

She also smugly asserted people don’t really need to know because it would reveal “methods and sources”.

I want to know what happened, and why the Ambassador et al were left in harms way with requests for boosted security ignored.

SarahW on November 14, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Limbaugh talking about this right now with same interpretation.

Well, that’s interesting. Could be more evidence of Broadwell’s obsession with being one of the inner circle groupies and not wanting competition,….or, she knew, or thought she knew, something about Kelley which made her a legitimate security threat. Very curious.

Was there any doubt?

The Plames are Democrats, did the Liberal Median insulate Bush?

sentinelrules on November 14, 2012 at 12:25 PM

The whole show is meaningless unless Patraeus testifies under oath; I don’t think he’d risk a perjury charge. Otherwise, he’s already shown you that he’s willing to parrot the administration line (by his earlier preposterous statements about the role of the film trailer).

Consider this: A man sits in a dentist’s chair. As the dentist picks up his drill, the man reaches out and grabs the dentist by the ballz. The dentist croaks “What are you doing?” and the man replies “We’re not going to hurt each other, are we?”

I think that is pretty much the way government works. I’m not optimistic about the prospects for finding out what really happened, despite questioning by “our side”, as if we had one (Juan McLame and Miss Lindsey, I’m looking at you).

bofh on November 14, 2012 at 12:27 PM

The man’s reputation — which he spent decades building — has been pissed on and left stained in the public eye. If there’s additional truth to be told, I imagine he’ll tell it. The Admin has already deployed the one significant piece of leverage they held over him.

Robert_Paulson on November 14, 2012 at 9:56 AM

I think you may be right about him telling the truth but his reputaion isn’t tarred in the least wiht a lot of people – including me.

Now – I will say this … I admire the man’s role in Iraq and he saved American lives there. However, I was less impressed with his efforts in Afghanistan and I suspect that may be because he was working under impossible constraints levelled on him by Ogabe.

I will also say – that I’m no fan of “good guys” working for Ogabe. Ogabe’s a leftist – let him put some leftist General in charge of his war efforts. I believe several of the Bush administration cabinet guys stayed on for Obama for a little while after his inauguration – I was no fan of that either.

The fact that he had an affair with a HOT CHICK (a smmmmmokin’ hot chick) – doesn’t bother me. When Arnold’s mistress was revealed – it was an embarrassment for the governator. But Paula Broadwell? I’m surprised DP didn’t come right and say … “Hells ya I HIT THAT!!”

There’s a lot of jack talking on HotAir by people who work eight hours a day in safe jobs in office cubicles. They come in to work on time and leave on time – and they somehow believe they’re able to judge a man who’s been working 16 to 20 hours a day for the last five years in a job where he has all the responsibility. Uhm okay – but I’m sorry – my reservations for DP working for Ogabe aside – I still respect him more than your average HA poster who’s chomping at the bit to hang the guy.

HondaV65 on November 14, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Hostess with the mostest was a role played by the Khawam twins mother, per some old old puff pieces in Philidelphia papers. The Lebanese-native parents were well-connected and the Mom entertained “artists and politicians” frequently.

Overheated Kos speculation not-withstanding, it’s at least possible given events of the times, that one or both of the parents had some espianage or political interest in cultivating the connections they had.

I suppose her interest in flattery or courting military/intelligence officials could have some similar motivation, beyond mere social climbing.

Whatever Patraeus does to rehabilitate his reputation is next to worthless.

The damage is already done, Revenge was re-elected. Patraeus didn’t tell the truth when it mattered.

For fun we should tally “conservatives” who have been totally conned by this corrupt bunch: Chief Justice Roberts, General Patraeus, John McCain, David Brooks, Colin Powell, Ron Paul, Ben Bernanke and most of the Fed, Chris Christie, Scott Brown, John Kasich, we should keep a running list

For first time, Palestinians in Gaza fire missile at IAF helicopter

IDF confirms that a Soviet-made Strela (SA-7) anti-aircraft missile was fired at a helicopter last week.

~~

WSJ reports that the State Department presence in Benghazi “provided diplomatic cover” for the previously hidden CIA mission, which involved finding and repurchasing heavy weaponry looted from Libyan government arsenals. These weapons are presumably from Muammar Gaddafi’s stock of about 20,000 portable heat-seeking missiles, the bulk of which were SA-7 surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles.

It begins.

Yep, I expect the real truth about the gunrunning out of Benghazi involves more than the Syrian rebels. I’m thinking Gaza as well as the Taliban and hezblahblah in Lebanon. That’s why the democratics seem so desperate to shut down any real investigation.

John Boehner, too.

You use the word “conned,” as if they were all deceived. But, in many cases, I think the more accurate description is “bought off,” or “threatened.”

Anybody could be the next one Breitbarted by this evil administration. And anyone left who still doesn’t believe President Jarrett/Obama is pure, unadulterated evil is purely deluded.

petefrt on November 14, 2012 at 1:14 PM

You’re not thinking by any chance that he’s going to testify that he lied under oath last time when he testified and said ‘t’was the video, stupid’…

jimver on November 14, 2012 at 9:22 AM

I learned today that Petrayus wasn’t under oath when he first talked to congress. It was a closed-door briefing.

Mord on November 14, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Then there’s a spec of hope. I didn’t know he wasn’t under oath the first time he testified, interesting….

jimver on November 14, 2012 at 1:15 PM

They stuck a fork in him and decided he was ready

Since he has already been shish kabobed, there is a question if he now wants to fall on his sword.

I would assume the depths, or lack of, of the Broad affair have not been plumbed and we have seen only a tidbit

Men and women were and are dying while these asshats play footsie ? How many better men were passed over because they weren’t PC enough to get to these morally challenged slugs?
Thicklugdonkey on November 14, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Tend to agree. What is with these friggin Gone with the Wind parties at Tara military base? I don’t like it at the WH, and I don’t like it in the mil.

They talk of the Situation room having real time feeds from Benghazi. Just as possible there were real life feeds from Camp Asshat

itsspideyman on November 14, 2012 at 1:04 PM

Nobody can take that away from him. But even the most honorable men act dishonorably at one time or another and it looks like Petraeus did too. Is this enough though, to ‘indict’ him permanently and irremediably so in the eyes of many? I guess it’s an individual matter, some people will tend to say that the service he did to his country was greater than the affair lapse, some will not forgive him for letting that lapse to get in the way of him telling the truth about Benghazi. I am somehwere in the middle, I think he is an exceptional soldier and general, and nothing can take this away from him, but I can’t forgive him for his first testimony on the Hill, and why did he back up the WH’s story full of holes as it was. This might push him into the less than honorable characters category in my book. He can still redeem himself, I suppose, but depends if he is ready to pay the price. And who knows, maybe the fact that he lied about Benghazi doesn’t have anything to do with his affair and him being blackmailed, but it’s the typical routine for agencies like CIA and their bosses to keep mum about and cover the traces of their less than orthodox methods and operations such as gun transfers, prisoners taking, etc…
