Breaking: Petraeus to testify on Benghazi attacks; Update: Petraeus offered testimony

posted at 9:12 am on November 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

So far this is only a breaking headline at Fox News, but the word on Twitter is that former CIA Director David Petraeus has agreed to testify in both House and Senate intelligence committee hearings about the terrorist attack that killed four Americans and sacked our consulate in Benghazi.  That reverses the previous announcements that Petraeus would decline to testify and have acting DCI Michael Morell handle Congress in his stead.

We’ll add more as the story develops.  This probably won’t mean any big surprises in the Benghazi story line, but it will give Congress an opening to demand answers on how the White House decided to push the spontaneous-movie-review meme for so long in the face of the overwhelming data that the attack was both deliberate and well-planned, with paramilitary forces, materiel, and tactics.

Fox does have a story link up, but with little detail as of yet.

Update: Fox reports that Petraeus initiated the agreement to talk with the committees, but at least one of these will be off-site and presumably behind closed doors:

After Petraeus’ resignation, lawmakers complained that the scandal was no reason they shouldn’t hear from the man at the helm of the CIA when CIA operatives came under attack alongside State Department employees in Benghazi last month.

The logistics of Petraeus’ appearance are still being worked out. But a source close to Petraeus said the former four-star general has contacted the CIA, as well as committees in both the House and Senate, to offer his testimony as the former CIA director.

Fox News has learned he is expected to speak off-site to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Friday about his Libya report.  The House side is still being worked out.

Last night’s Fox News Special Report has a pretty good rundown of the kind of questions Petraeus is likely to face — especially what his role might have been in briefing Susan Rice before her appearances on five Sunday talk shows to push the false “spontaneous demonstration” story.

So, tell me how you know that Obama was not in the Situation Room, watching events as they transpired. kingsjester on November 14, 2012 at 9:35 AM

Hmmm…

Osama hit: photos aplenty of the whole crew watching it transpire (even though the satellite feed was lost).

Hurricane Sandy: photos of Obooba in the WH nerve center being in charge of a hurricane.

Benghazi: bupkis.

Those are facts.

Speculation: had Delta Force raged into Benghazi on Obooba’s orders with AC-130′s grinding enemy meat below and 200 attackers were sent to hell and our people got out safe, we would see photos of him with his firm hand on the helm.

Speculation: he was packing for Vegas and couldn’t be bothered. After all, there was no cross border authorization, and to go in w/o it would be treason.

Akzed on November 14, 2012 at 9:47 AM

I don’t think so. Their boy Bill Clinton set their standard for an acceptable level of sliminess and immorality and Petraeus is still below that standard.

The libs are claiming that Petraeus backs up Obama’s version of events in Benghazi, which is why the GOP-no joke-pushed the affair out there and caused his resignation. It’s like they don’t even try to square anything with reality anymore.

changer1701 on November 14, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Interesting… I didn’t realize that the GOP was still in control of every aspect of government. So Obama didn’t win?

MobileVideoEngineer on November 14, 2012 at 9:49 AM

If he was a patriot he wouldn’t have let Obama claim credit for ending the war in Iraq when Obama opposed the very thing, Bush’s Surge, which ended the insurgency.

Basilsbest on November 14, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Well, anyone can think what they want about him. In my opinion, the only way he can redeem himself is to tell the truth about this. I understand that honor is a big thing in the military, and for him to retain any of that, there is only one thing left to do.

Night Owl on November 14, 2012 at 9:49 AM

It depends on what he knows. If his testimony is damning enough, he can always cop a plea.

mnjg on November 14, 2012 at 9:40 AM

While he was talking to House and Senate folks, my understanding is that he was not under oath. Remember, that was a closed door, confidential meeting. We are not supposed to know what was said. Officially, all we know is that those in attendance were mighty pissed about the lack if information given out. He could have been “avoiding” the truth and holding the company line.
My thinking is that he’ll say he is now “expanding” the truth and giving a fuller account of what happened.
No perjury in that.

He needs to abide by the values he has pushed for years and do the right thing. If he doesn’t then he is a nothing to every soldier past and present.

LEADRSHIP is an acronym for the seven basic values of the United States Army[1][2][3], and stands for
Loyalty – Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit and other Soldiers.
Duty – Fulfill your obligations.
Respect – Treat people as they should be treated.
Selfless Service – Put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own.
Honor – Live up to all the Army values.
Integrity – Do what’s right, legally and morally.
Personal Courage – Face fear, danger, or adversity [physical or moral].

Don’t worry about me troll. Besides we know that Obama was in the situation room for a while before heading off to bed in full knowledge that there was an attack going on at Benghazi. But, had to get the beauty sleep for the trip to Vegas the next day.

Whether the rat-eared wonder was monitoring in real-time is less important than the fact he should have known from his people what was going on. And yet bedtime was more important than an ambassador who had been missing for hours in the midst of what was clearly an organized attack. What about these facts is so god damned hard for you to understand because your mindless assertion that this was just bad intelligence has been refuted.

MobileVideoEngineer on November 14, 2012 at 9:42 AM

It is very sad that we have reached this point. Roughly half the country is being ignored by the legacy media or outright mocked for their beliefs and values. It’s obvious that the government misled the American people about the facts concerning the Benghazi debacle and then shut down all communications and began to obfuscate and deceive. This has put the CIA/Military in direct opposition to the White House while the media closed ranks around the POTUS. When has that ever happened in our lifetime?

katy the mean old lady on November 14, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Keep in mind this fact: no matter what GP says in testimony, Obama will be shown to have lied to the American people.

1) If GP says there was bad intel which led him to inform Obama that it was a YouTube video, then Obama’s claim to the American people at the debate, in which he said that his Rose Garden speech proved he believed it was an act of terror, will have been a lie.

2) If GP testifies that he knew it was a pre-planned terror attack within hours, as other intel leaks from both State and CIA show, then Obama will have lied to the American people about this having anything to do with the video.

There is literally no way for Obama to escape his lie, because he’s taken both sides of the debate agressively. Now whether that will mean anything to the Press, Congress, or the American people, we’ll see. If I had to guess, GP will say he fed bad intell to Obama to make him think it was the YT video. That will make Obama a liar at the debate, but that’s the lesser of two lies, and will allow the Press to sweep the cover-up under the rug, and move on to the sex part of this horrible story.

No matter what Patraeus’ testimony reveals about Benghazi, he’ll forever be labeled a liar and a traitor by one segment of the populace, and a patriot by another segment.

Flora Duh on November 14, 2012 at 10:16 AM

My name is David Petraeus, I know the truth about what happened in both Benghazi, and Washington, and I am prepared to tell you the whole truth without without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion.

Thank you GEN Petraeus, please proceed…

ted c on November 14, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Petraeus doesn’t know the whole truth about what happened. He can fill in a lot of details but he only has the CIA perspective. Which is why it is unforgiveable that the pig-in-a-pantsuit is off wine-tasting and not being called to testify. That Panetta isn’t being called to defend the complete absence of the military for nearly a day. That Susan Rice isn’t being called to defend her lies.

It will be a category 5 disappointment to all the conspiracy theorists. Just wait.

Me too. But I don’t think that will happen.

Weight of Glory on November 14, 2012 at 10:17 AM

Even if he is forthcoming, Patraeus’ testimony will probably not make one scintilla of difference because 1 L’affaire Broadwell has marginalized the credibility of the ex-general and CIA Director and 2 Thanks to White House and State Department stonewalling and stalling rope-a-dope as well as scant MSM the American public already “doesn’t care” or “doen’t know” about Benghazi or has psychologically “moved on.”

Thus anyone expecting a “home run” will be lucky to get a “bunt single” and more likely (because I do not believe Patraeus will be truthful) a complete “strike out.”

Ambassador Chris Stevens, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty, and Sean Smith remain unavailable for comment.

kingsjester on November 14, 2012 at 10:18 AM

There is literally no way for Obama to escape his lie, because he’s taken both sides of the debate agressively. Now whether that will mean anything to the Press, Congress, or the American people, we’ll see.

Ultimately, it won’t mean anything.

The America-hating sociopath has another four years (at least) to destroy our nation.
The press has never done its job and isn’t about to start now.
Congress is “led” by a feckless boozer without the stones to pursue the issue and begin impeachment proceedings, and even if they did, nothing will ever get past the incontinent misanthrope Senate Majority Leader—and it looks like we’ll never get control of the Senate back in our lifetimes.

My buddy told me he was going to testify last night. I have to stick with him if he tells me he is going to sing

Sorta like Ollie North or Dick Cheney.

We are truly a divided nation with moronic trolls like Bradky living in whatever reality best defends the commie radicals destroying this nation with no regard for those slaughtered at Benghazi nor any concern about cover-up at the highest level of government because Dems are in power.

Public questioning will devolve into ‘who did you screw and when did you screw ‘em’. We will learn nothing that moves the dial. SCOAMF will keep SCOAMFing.

ElectricPhase on November 14, 2012 at 10:20 AM

So, people expect him to say something when the same people he is supposed to testify against hold all the power against him for giving classified documents to his mistress?

Nothing will come out of his testimony.

milcus on November 14, 2012 at 10:20 AM

You’re probably one of those idiots that actually thinks Valerie Plame was “outed” – as if her CIA employment was a secret. Hilarious.

blink on November 14, 2012 at 10:17 AM

Hey, nobody was supposed to see Plame’s Facebook entries about those CIA parties!

Happy Nomad on November 14, 2012 at 10:21 AM

I’d be thrilled if the facts did come out so everyone would know the truth. But I won’t beclown myself by making up all sorts of unprovable claims based on the absence of facts.

LOL – those are not “true conservatives” rather the garden variety “self professed truecons” whose personal definition is the only true definition.

Bradky on November 14, 2012 at 10:23 AM

This whole thing is a waste of our time. Nothing will come of it. You all know this. The Chicago mob has this under control. They are just cleaning up some loose ends. The media will cover, as usual.

I do wonder how many others in our military, CIA and FBI they have the goods on? It’s clear they are getting rid of those who would oppose him.
