Breaking: Petraeus to testify on Benghazi attacks; Update: Petraeus offered testimony

posted at 9:12 am on November 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

So far this is only a breaking headline at Fox News, but the word on Twitter is that former CIA Director David Petraeus has agreed to testify in both House and Senate intelligence committee hearings about the terrorist attack that killed four Americans and sacked our consulate in Benghazi.  That reverses the previous announcements that Petraeus would decline to testify and have acting DCI Michael Morell handle Congress in his stead.

We’ll add more as the story develops.  This probably won’t mean any big surprises in the Benghazi story line, but it will give Congress an opening to demand answers on how the White House decided to push the spontaneous-movie-review meme for so long in the face of the overwhelming data that the attack was both deliberate and well-planned, with paramilitary forces, materiel, and tactics.

Fox does have a story link up, but with little detail as of yet.

Update: Fox reports that Petraeus initiated the agreement to talk with the committees, but at least one of these will be off-site and presumably behind closed doors:

After Petraeus’ resignation, lawmakers complained that the scandal was no reason they shouldn’t hear from the man at the helm of the CIA when CIA operatives came under attack alongside State Department employees in Benghazi last month.

The logistics of Petraeus’ appearance are still being worked out. But a source close to Petraeus said the former four-star general has contacted the CIA, as well as committees in both the House and Senate, to offer his testimony as the former CIA director.

Fox News has learned he is expected to speak off-site to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Friday about his Libya report.  The House side is still being worked out.

Last night’s Fox News Special Report has a pretty good rundown of the kind of questions Petraeus is likely to face — especially what his role might have been in briefing Susan Rice before her appearances on five Sunday talk shows to push the false “spontaneous demonstration” story.

It’s about damn well time this was announced. I don’t know who the hell he thought he was trying to get out of testifying, but he works for us and he better spill it and spill it all.

You can be sure that not one Congressman will have the courage to explore the fact he was blackmailed into lying to the American people

I don’t think that is how its supposed to work. You don’t ‘agree’. They tell you that you’re going to appear and that’s it. This is BS anymore.

Friend of mine who works in the pentagon has told me lastnight that petraeus was told to shut up about bhegazi and if he didnt, the white house was going to release the info about his girlfriend. I was told that it was petraues who leaked the affair to preempt the white house and tell the truth about libya.

The white house is trying to get him back in the ranks so they can threaten him with a demotion and take away his pension. My buddy told me who is a guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier told me the general is going to sing like a bird

As I wrote in another post, in some of my training we were taught about women being used to flip someone. Is that what happened? Why else would she have classified material?

Happy Nomad on November 14, 2012 at 9:26 AM

Supposedly set to testify tomorrow? Well, a lot can happen in 24 hours, AND, even if Petraeus miraculously appears before Congress tomorrow, he won’t be under oath and there is absolutely no reason to trust that he will tell the truth. Petraeus is a traitor, and, as he has done since the Benghazi attack, Petraeus will likely continue to protect obama.

Pork-Chop on November 14, 2012 at 9:26 AM

If Dr. Krauthammer is correct in his thinking, the General owes this Administration nothing. He held their line and they let him fall. As he is now a private citizen, he is free to speak his mind.
It will be interesting if he contradicts any of his earlier testimony to the House and Senate. If he does, this whole Benghazi issue will explode as the very next question will be “Why?”

Jabberwock on November 14, 2012 at 9:27 AM

Bradky on November 14, 2012 at 9:27 AM

Somebody had better get some heavy security around David Petraeus or they won’t be able to talk to him without having a seance.

Axion on November 14, 2012 at 9:28 AM

Now would be a good time to offer up a prayer to General Petraeus so that he has the courage and wisdom to tell the American people the truth, the whole truth, unvarnished and unafraid.

Say what you will about his affair, it was wrong and he knows it. He is a mortal man, after all, and mortal men do make mistakes, even those with a galaxy of stars on his uniform.

But make no mistake, this is NOT about infidelity, at least not marital infidelity. This is about treason at the highest levels of our government, this is about the wanton destruction of the American Republic by Obama and his minions.

Obama is behind Benghazi.

Obama is behind Fast & Furious.

This needs to be exposed, it needs to be investigated. If crimes have been committed, people need to be indicted, prosecuted, convicted and sent to prison.

And that includes our president. He is NOT immune to our laws, he is not to operate outside the clear confines of our Constitution.

VegasRick on November 14, 2012 at 9:28 AM

Even in his currently damaged state, Petraeus has far more credibility in testimony before Congress than anyone in this disgusting White House.

I expect that between resignation and the testimony he is taking time to lawyer up and find out what he can and cannot talk about, if anything. That’s a smart move that any of us would take.

This probably won’t mean any big surprises in the Benghazi story line,

Are you kidding ?? No surprises – could have had his deputy testify. They are trying to put pressure on him with FBI ransacking his paramour’s house looking for so called classified info, trying to link that to him, most likely to file criminal charges against him for supposedly leaking info to her. What bothers me the most is what more can the WH threaten him with. Are there kinky emails that Petraeus would hate for his children to see? My gut tells me, he’ll not make waves because if he tells the truth about bengazi Obama might get impeached. He probably has many more skeletons in his closet that the whitehouse holds over him.

I’m having a hard time believing this resignation was only over an affair. It’s practically a job requirement for Democrats.

That being said, it would be insane for him to actually testify voluntarily. That is why I think he will do the whole “On the advice of counsel I respectfully invoke my rights under the Fifth Amendment.” There are too many details that stink about the whole thing and Patraeus had better be sure he is in a legally defensible position before stuff gets changed by the administration to come up with a cohesive set of lies about what actually happened.

There is an outside chance that as a retired general, Patraeus is just ticked off by the way he has been treated and the way his integrity has been impugned and he will actually testify. But the politics of the situation would not make this the smartest move.

He resigned to get the claws out of him from the whitehouse or I should say to go rogue like some of the palin people here like to say.

Conservative4ev on November 14, 2012 at 9:40 AM

The Obama administration still has a ton of leverage over Petraeus. I’m sure there is something within those 30K emails that they could use in an attempt to prosecute him on some trumped up charge. In the end, I’m sure Petraeus would come out on the winning end, but only after years of lawyers bills. I also wouldn’t put it past Obama to come up with a way to freeze Petraeus’s government pension either. When it comes to the private citizen vs Leviathan, even when you win you lose.

HarryBackside on November 14, 2012 at 9:41 AM

I hope Patreaus is a good and honorable man who somehow lost his way. He admitted the affair. His career and marriage are in shambles. He has no reason to lie for the Obama administration anymore. I pray that he has the courage to tell the American people the truth. It doesn’t make sense that he would publicaly admit the affair and resign just to plead the 5th. I hope he has a plan to take Obama out with him.

mnjg on November 14, 2012 at 9:40 AM

You can only perjure if you are under oath. Which he was not.

katy the mean old lady on November 14, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Why would he tell the truth? Really? Don’t get excited, everybody.

djl130 on November 14, 2012 at 9:19 AM

What does he have left to lose at this point? Demonstrating personal integrity by telling the truth is the ONLY way to salvage his personal and professional reputation, and I’m sure he knows that. It’s the only thing people respect, and in leadership it’s all about respect.

Harbingeing on November 14, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Once again you try to promote you speculative opinion by asking others to prove it is not true. Juvenile debating tactic at best.
You are making the claim – prove you are right.

Bradky on November 14, 2012 at 9:37 AM

Speculative opinion? You mean like telling Congress, the Sunday talk shows, and the UN that the Benghazi attack was based on a YouTube video. Oh that’s right those were just outright lies AS HAS BEEN PROVEN BEYOND ANY SPECULATIVE PREMISE.

Will the military/CIA take down the Obama administration..?

d1carter on November 14, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Not if the Obama administration takes down the military first.

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that’s the plan.

petefrt on November 14, 2012 at 9:39 AM

It’s sad that we are now using terms and ideas about our own country that we normally use for ME, South American, and third world country dictatorships.

I’m thinking it might be refreshing to have President Biden visit bho in prison.

freedomfirst on November 14, 2012 at 9:35 AM

I read that Biden was in the room with Obama and Panetta while Benghazi was being discussed. He should be impeached as well, and then we would have John Boehner as President.

I read yesterday his previous testimony wasn’t under oath. It was simply a briefing and he wasn’t sworn in under oath.

Tell you what, Skippy. You prove that you are right, instead.

kingsjester on November 14, 2012 at 9:43 AM

The Obama administration still has a ton of leverage over Petraeus. I’m sure there is something within those 30K emails that they could use in an attempt to prosecute him on some trumped up charge. In the end, I’m sure Petraeus would come out on the winning end, but only after years of lawyers bills. I also wouldn’t put it past Obama to come up with a way to freeze Petraeus’s government pension either. When it comes to the private citizen vs Leviathan, even when you win you lose.

HarryBackside on November 14, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Yes there could be, but nothing bigger then a live testimoney saying the President was going to let 30 people die for political reasons and refused to support back as he watched on drone tv waiting for our people to be slaughtered by terrorist. Emails wont mean squat because people have to read, if they see and hear it thats more lasting.

It depends on what he knows. If his testimony is damning enough, he can always cop a plea.

His career, family, and reputation are already destroyed so maybe he can remember a little of that “Duty, Honor, Country” stuff and do the correct and honorable thing one last time.

rplat on November 14, 2012 at 9:44 AM

From the time I was aware of his retirement, I expected him to want to testify.

Conservative4ev on November 14, 2012 at 9:45 AM

The libs are claiming that Petraeus backs up Obama’s version of events in Benghazi, which is why the GOP-no joke-pushed the affair out there and caused his resignation. It’s like they don’t even try to square anything with reality anymore.

changer1701 on November 14, 2012 at 9:45 AM

I hope Patreaus is a good and honorable man who somehow lost his way. He admitted the affair. His career and marriage are in shambles. He has no reason to lie for the Obama administration anymore. I pray that he has the courage to tell the American people the truth. It doesn’t make sense that he would publicaly admit the affair and resign just to plead the 5th. I hope he has a plan to take Obama out with him.

He is the freaking CIA director, besides the Benghazi stuff … What ELSE does he know?

bitsy on November 14, 2012 at 9:41 AM

It’s a certainty that he will lie. He ceased to be honorable when he agreed to be Obama’s CIA Director. Obama taints everything he touches.
