Gingrich: Yeah, we have to get immigration off the table

posted at 12:11 pm on November 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Most readers seem to disagree with my perspective on the necessity of resolving the immigration-reform issue while we still have a say in how it gets implemented. Newt Gingrich, however, sees the same problem that I do, which is that the issue is an albatross around the neck of the GOP as it tries to reach out to non-white voters. “You can’t say to someone, ‘I’d really like to get your vote over jobs,’” Gingrich tells the Morning Joe panel, “‘and by the way, we’re kicking your grandmother out.’ It doesn’t work.”

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Jennifer Rubin notes that the immigration problem isn’t just a policy issue, and its damage isn’t limited to Hispanics, either:

Opponents of immigration reform say that the “Asian problem” can’t be because of the party’s stance on illegal immigration because that’s an issue primarily related to Hispanic immigrants from our hemisphere. Wrong.

The party’s position on immigration is off-putting to many ethnic and racial groups because it reflects, they believe, a GOP that doesn’t want them and doesn’t want a diverse society.

David Goldman offers some insight on the subject:

Asian-Americans, like any other immigrant group, come here with the hope of bringing family members with them. Tough enforcement of immigration laws makes life as hard for them as it does for any other immigrant group, and frustrates their hope of reuniting families in America. The result of our present immigration laws is that we fail to keep out the illegals we don’t want, and make it harder to absorb the skilled and energetic immigrants we do want. There will be endless discussion during the next few months of [Mitt] Romney’s mistake in moving to the right of Rick Perry on immigration during the Republican primaries, and I will leave the detailed parsing to the professionals. I hope the professionals talk to Asian-Americans first.

Asians now outnumber Hispanics among new immigrants. As Goldman puts it, “If we Republicans can’t persuade our most successful, entrepreneurial, family-oriented citizens to support us, we won’t be in business much longer.”

It’s that perceived hostility to diversity that will lock the GOP out of urban centers, where Democrats enjoyed a big turnout, even with a better economic message and policy.  Note that the GOP share of the Asian vote declined by an even greater degree in 2012 than the decline in the Hispanic demographic.  The Republican Party has to improve its standing among these demographics — not by pandering, but by offering conservative solutions that improve their lives.  But in order to make the argument, we need to improve the perception of our agenda, and immigration reform is a big obstacle to that goal.

One of the most disappointing aspects of the election was that the Asian population flipped full Progressive. It does make me think that this country is doomed to a managed-decline, Eurostyle welfare state with a massive underclass and wealthy plutocracy. The economy -should- have trumped every other issue but it didn’t. Perception is reality, I guess.

Ironically the only thing keeping us afloat is that the Eurozone’s Progressivism is too far gone for our capital to flee there en masse. They’ve just gone into another recession. We’re still the best option but we’re burning through our 200 years of cultural capital at blazing speed. Once another major market presents itself for investment we’re done, and we’ll fall hard.

The Republicans need to stop pushing the panic button over immigration. Otherwise they may rush into the wrong solution.

Thinking that amnesty or a path to citizenship for illegals will magically turn hispanics into Republicans is foolhardy.

Hey Newt, we don’t need no stinkin’ oil!

Wow, Newt. All the illegal aliens (Undocumenteds?) are grandmothers again!

I could really humiliate you with the resumes and criminal profiles of our mostly Latino guests and stats on the voting patterns of the folks who ignore border laws. Notice how he doesn’t talk to cops down south and out west.

Why not do something about people we have here who have been stuck on the bottom rung in most respects for a century or more and were either born here or entered legally?

The answer is that an amnesty like President Reagan passed is a cheap attempt to “help the neighbors of the Reagan Ranch” and maybe keep up the stupid “humane nation building” we are doing for the Afghans. We need a new George Keenan to write a new “Containment” strategy for an impoverished empire. Leave something on the scale of Vice President Biden’s force here and there and explain that we may use larger warheads if the Islamists keep messing with us as we are tired and broke and will not leave legions everywhere. Tell them we talked To Pat B. and he told us Rome and Britain didn’t do well that way.

I have an article ready for a reasonable price for the same or an equivalent publication.

tickleddragon on November 13, 2012 at 1:50 PM

And I’m in agreement with Gingrich on this one. One way or another, this issue HAS to be DEALT with. People can lament this as much as they want, but it doesn’t change things. We have maybe two more national elections left where it’s theoretically possible to win while being slaughtered among the minority vote. After that, if we haven’t at least narrowed the degree by which we lose these voters, we are done, finished, finito! We’ll be lucky to win senate races in North Dakota if we don’t fix this!

So yelling, “hold the course!” is foolish, as the current course leads to certain ruin.

Again, as I’ve said numerous times this week. This does NOT mean implementing blanket amnesty. There is after all, a huge difference between offering millions citizenship carte-blanche, and creating a system to phase in the same number of people over the course of say, two decades.

Either way though, it must be DEALT with.

Also, for the last time, nobody better DARE say that we cannot win the Hispanic vote. Frankly, such complete dismissal is borderline offensive to me, and I’m a blasted white guy. There is no reason, what so ever, that you cannot convince a person that conservatism is right just because of their ethnic background.

Besides, saying that is a round about way of saying that conservatism is finished. We all knew that sooner or later we’d have to win these voters to survive. Now that it’s happened we should just own up to it and do the best we can.

The GOP has bought the meme that Rich old white guys are evil.

The progressives need not fear. Those “rich old white guys” are going the way of bison.

Will this trend lead to a good conclusion?

Great cultures have flourished and empires maintained by venerating elders and respecting law.

Notice that our exciting pop culture and media never do a comparison with places run by committed young turks and revolutionaries?

Let us think…Somalia, Gaza, the Third Reich, the early Soviet Union, Cuba and a list of others.

Liberals tend to hit me with our American Revolution when I say this. Ha Ha Right in my wheelhouse! Whack!

I just got one in a bar in Georgetown with an audience recently. I did you guys proud!

Check Mr. Gordon Lloyd on the Names, Ages, Experiences and Biographies of the Constitutional Convention delegates.

However, since most liberals (esp. on the left coast) never took a Poli. Sci. course, I get hit with all this philosophy or remanant from their dumb lefty teachers in Law or English Lit. and subjects like President Obama apparently took (they are allegedly on his transcript).

To begin, I attack the information flow from those benighted souls.

For example, lefty English teachers never assign the book which Lord of the Flieswas inspired by. We might be better off if Stephen King, various political leaders and Bill Maher had read it.

As corny as the earlier book seems to us, the society worked as a civil and effective community.

We just rejected the Mormon and his belief system was considered a joke in good old Newsweek.

Well, those boy scouts handled an epic exodus and mastered a forbidding desert in a country with an EXTERMINATION ORDER on them in Illinois and good Christians across our nation trying to commit genocide. The Japanese in WWII had a decent time by comparison.

(Go watch the PBS show The Mormons on the web although I have even scarier sources on their history.)

We are losing something precious but it didn’t happen in the last few months and surely not on Novenber 6.

It is not over yet, Newt.

Let me put this to you, as politely as I can.

Everything that just came out of your mouth, is completely and utterly irrelevant.

Guess what, the Hispanics are HERE! There is no getting rid of them! There is no turning back the demographic shift. We have but two choices, adapt or die!

Yeah, Mexico is a mess, so? We have plenty of Russian immigrants that came here to escape communism, plenty of Cuban immigrants that came here to flee oppression, we have immigrants from every corner of the country, and when we properly integrate them into our culture they do nothing but benefit society.

Our failure with the Hispanic vote, stems from the fact that we haven’t tried to integrate them. Democrats have been enabling this intentionally, but we make it easy for them by pushing them further and further into their arms!

Newts right, you cannot say, “hey, I want your vote, oh and we’re gonna try tossing your grandma out next week.” So if you want to survive you need to make inroads, and if you want to make inroads we need to remove immigration from the table.

These are the ONLY relevant facts. For freedom to survive, we MUST sell it to minorities, period.

WolvenOne on November 13, 2012 at 2:15 PM

Path to citizenship:
1) Any of the illegal aliens allowed to stay must apply for green card and wait until five years after they receive the green card to apply for citizenship just like those who followed the rules.
2) They are placed at the end of the same line as those who have followed the law.
3) The end of the line is determined by the date they applied, not the date the entered illegally.
4) No special categories will be added to accelerate the process for them.
5) No applications for green cards from illegal aliens will be accepted until after the wall is completed and e-Verify is uniformly enforced.

Are you guys kidding? This is the communist lite brigade who OPENLY VOTED FOR HUSSEIN last week. Not RWM, per se, but in large numbers for the rest of them. This is the Herr Doktor/Gary Johnson crowd. Who openly stated the week prior to elections that they will vote for Hussein. Gleefully so. At least NV was R loss because of them , guaranteed, with Romney losing by 2 points when this crowd is 6-8 points here in NV. Do you own math. Making sure that SEIU had to rig way fewer machines.

I know she posts a lot of good info on the conservative side, but having this brigade in charge of USA is more than suicidal. We wouldn’t have borders to begin with…

One thing I do agree with RWM as it pertains to her posts in this thread is that we do have perfectly fine immigration laws and procedures. Get in line and await your turn, file all the paperwork requested in the process. But we seem to be living in the times of instant gratification and laws seem to be just something on paper. Reagan did the worst possible thing when he granted amnesty to illegals back in the ’80s, I was more than disgusted being a legal immigrant myself. And I knew it will only lead to greater and greater concessions once the dam is broken. Which we now see happen.

As a legal immigrant this entire discussion is beyond appalling. I know that GOP will cave eventually, no doubt in my mind, and this will lead to yet another huge wave of illegals wanting their “rights” and freebies. A never ending cycle started by Reagan with liberals breaking their promise once it became expedient for them.

Fool me once…

Yeah, ‘cuz electing Obama only to impeach him when you’ll never get 67 votes in the Senate to convict & remove him is pure genius.

There’s no way around losing some of the base on this, at least in the short term. But there is no way to win back the direction of the country on the real issues of reduced government and self-directed life.

Newt is right. We MUST find a solution fo the illegal immigration problem that does not alienate the minority population. We will never win a majority in future elections without more support from minorities.

This is not about actually being prejudiced – it’s about the perception of prejudice (right or wrong). And also about accepting the reality that we cannot hope to ignore or overcome the growing Hispanic vote.

You know not of what you speak.

First off, the reproduction rate of Hispanics isn’t all that much higher than Caucasians. In fact, by the time you reach third generation they reproduce at almost the exact same rate as Caucasians.

The reason for this, is because after 2-3 generations, they’re culturally more American than anything else.

And this is where everyones arguments completely fall apart.

We have every indication in the world that Hispanic Americans are going through the exact same melting pot every other immigrant group went through. Yet, somehow, people keep insisting that they are somehow in some way different.

Well, bumpkiss! You grow up watching American shows, going to American schools, surrounded by American friends, and when you grow up you’re going to be culturally American!

At that point, you’re just as likely to drift to the right as well as the left. The difference is that Democrats make a concerted effort to recruit, and have been for decades. We haven’t,and refuse to make an effort for more than five minutes.

WolvenOne on November 13, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Rush said earlier that Reagan got 37% of the Hispanic vote in 1984.
Then signed the amnesty bill in 1986.

IT’S ABOUT WHICH PARTY GIVES THEM WELFARE BENEFITS!

The left uses literature to show mankind as evil and this backdrop helps to set the stage to excuse “liberal” left wing dictators and demonize the right. It is an awkward tool but most of their audience has no energy to think critically and peer pressure really helps a lot.

I think the book which Lord of the Flies answered was Coral Island but nobody ever heard of it.

The point is that Piggy lived in Coral Island and maybe one of his descendants founded the EIB Network. the society had thought and rules for all, even if they weren’t liked.

Tyrants and despotic kings historically have tolerated the critics with the job title “fool” which is what comedians used to be called. The lovable guys who knew how to keep from getting killed.

After all, how penetrating were they going to be and how pliant are those who take their guidance from critics in such a friendly court of entertainment?

Late night TV and The Comedy Channel come to mind here for some reason.

Thanks. Now I feel better.

IlikedAUH2O on November 13, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Yeah, Mexico is a mess, so? We have plenty of Russian immigrants that came here to escape communism, plenty of Cuban immigrants that came here to flee oppression, we have immigrants from every corner of the country, and when we properly integrate them into our culture they do nothing but benefit society.

Exactly. It’s also a mistake to assume that all Hispanics share the same values. A person from Argentina and a person from Mexico are both Hispanic, but that’s where the similarities end. Argentina’s immigration patterns in the 1900′s was almost identical to the US. Lots of Irish, Italians and German. Outside of language, they are vastly different. For the most part, Mexicans have very little in common with the rest of Latin America.

Right now, immigration is a wedge issue. At the very least it’s used to drive Hispanic turnout, and hurts us with other voting blocks. We could survive with these sorts of wedge issues in the past, now we cannot.

connertown on November 13, 2012 at 2:40 PM

I used to think Gingrich was smart.

His campaign took a nosedive last spring in two debates when he insulted 62% of Republicans, 50% of Democrats, and even 40% of Hispanics with his false dichotomy about deporting grandmothers.

Here are the poll numbers.

1. The GOP can NEVER out-pander the Democrats, even with a losing proposition.

2. Amnesty is NEVER the solution – it will not stem the flood — it will only encourage a bigger flood of illegal immigration.

3. Attrition through enforcement, with no deportations and no amnesty, is favored by the vast majority of Americans as the most sane, just, economical and effective policy, WHEN it is enforced, as in Georgia – see this video.

4. Newt is lying by omission when he poses the tired old false dichotomy of: “We can’t deport 12 million illegal aliens, THEREFORE we must give them citizenship.”

So? More racist pandering from racist Democrats giving free stuff isn’t a good reason for the GOP to abandon it’s principles.

It’s that perceived hostility to diversity that will lock the GOP out of urban centers, where Democrats enjoyed a big turnout, even with a better economic message and policy.

Um, the hostility is only “perceived”, there’s no real hostility to diversity in the GOP. As Rush pointed out the other day, there was plenty of “diversity” at the GOP convention. Everyone is perfectly welcome as long as you stand for liberty and freedom. If you’re a Marxist moocher who only wants free stuff, then you’re not welcome.

sauldalinsky on November 13, 2012 at 2:48 PM

I don’t understand why a path to citizenship must be included in any immigration reform. Why would anyone support rewarding law breakers with the chance to gain citizenship and voting rights? If we cannot deport them all and must do some kind of amnesty, then why not legal residency without citizenship? Let the lack of citizenship be punishment for entering illegally. They must learn english, have a job or enough savings to not ever need public assistance, not have committed any other crimes besides entering illegally – no identity theft, no drugs, no violence, no gang affiliation – and the ones who actually contribute to society instead of leaching off of it can stay but never become citizens.

But first, the borders must be secured, a law must be passed that there will never be another amnesty and all those entering illegally from such a date forward will be immediately deported regardless of their sob story, and birthright citizenship will be ended for anyone in the country who is not a legal permanent resident or citizen. No more birther tourism for those on temp visas, no more citizenship for the kids of illegals. Mom must be a legal permanent resident or a citizen.

When are the politicians going to put the needs and wants of the citizens and legal immigrants of this country ahead of the demands of the illegals who only want a hand out? So tired of our politicians acting like the demands of law breakers need to be given top priority and rewarded without consequence, but citizens and those who obeyed the law entering don’t matter.

Sunspots on November 13, 2012 at 2:48 PM

The experience of the Reagan amnesty is proof that amnesty has failed. If the GOP pushes amnesty for illegals who have committed a federal crime by entering the country illegally. The best the GOP can hope for is that I sit out the election in 2014 and 2016. The worst case is that I vote for the dems in order to punish the GOP.What I won’t do is support any Republican candidate who supports amnesty.

Hera on November 13, 2012 at 2:48 PM

fred5678 on November 13, 2012 at 2:40 PM

None of this, will ever, ever, EVER happen!

News flash Sherlock,60% of American support a path to citizenship. How do we know this? It was asked frigging last week as a part of the exit polls!!

As for that Zogby poll, it’s junk. Zogby hasn’t had an accurate general election poll in over a decade, their numbers are practically random, which is why they have almost no customers.

Sorry, but even if the exit poll is a few points off, it’d still be a clear majority. With this sort of support, you’re not going to prevent a path to citizenship. Anybody that tries will simply be voted out, end of story.

Resist We Much on November 13, 2012 at 2:50 PM

I can’t believe that this is even a debate. If you want to know what America will look like if 12 million more illegal aliens are granted citizenship, you don’t have to conjecture. Just come to California, where Republicans are now less than a third of the Legislature, and despite double-digit unemployment year after year, and endless budget woes as far as the eye can see, Democrats are regularly reelected to ever statewide office. It doesn’t really matter though, what the GOP does, because Obama will grant citizenship to these people whether or not Congress agrees with it. The end of the GOP is guaranteed, it’s just a question of how fast it will occur.

Progressive Heretic on November 13, 2012 at 2:52 PM

The Republican Party has to improve its standing among these demographics — not by pandering, but by offering conservative solutions that improve their lives. But in order to make the argument, we need to improve the perception of our agenda, and immigration reform is a big obstacle to that goal.

Oh, Ed. Proof you’re delusional and just too nice of a guy. Where has playing by the rules gotten the GOP? Romney tried the nice guy route this time. Its a reasonable strategy but its clearly not working and won’t work. The other side is playing dirty. It clearly wasn’t just an election “about the economy stupid”.

What solutions Ed? Put on your thinking cap and come up with some beyond “improving perception”. Hopefully ones that don’t take 25+ years to implement and control of a big media empire. I don’t think we have that kind of time. Maybe if it had been started in 1986…

Also, this is just proof of how much of an attention whore Newt is.
