Carney: Obama “wasn’t pleased” with Petraeus scandal when he found out, just after the election

posted at 6:51 pm on November 13, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

That’s their story and they’re stickin’ to it, I suppose. During the White House briefing today, Press Secretary Jay Carney affirmed the president’s confidence in Gen. Allen and iterated that the White House’s first inkling of all this came as a complete surprise after the election. Carney also emphasized the president’s eagerness to focus on his current number-one priority, a.k.a. jobs, the economy, and the fiscal cliff (which, I’m sure, is perfectly true — no good lingering on security concerns that bring any more attention to that Benghazi disaster, is it?).

One reporter wondered if the White House mightn’t acknowledge that people are thinking that the timing of this whole episode is a little bizarre, but Carney argues that the FBI has mechanisms in place for when to inform the White House and legislative branch about these types of things — which is perfectly plausible, I guess, but this could still be suggestive of an administration on the strugglebus. As Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and member of Intelligence Committee Rep. Peter King has wondered, this all looks kinda’ odd:

“If [Obama] was told and did nothing about it, that reflects on him,” King continued. “If he wasn’t told then that reflects on the people who should have told him, the FBI and Attorney General [Eric Holder]. And certainly the White House, if they were told about it they should have told the president, but until then, we have to take the president at his word.”

“To me, someone in as key a role as Gen. Petraeus was, once the FBI realized that he was in the scope of their investigation, they had the absolute obligation I believe to tell the president,” he continued. “Because Gen. Petraeus was representing the president on so many key matters around the world. In personal talks, negotiations with leaders around the world and being in such a sensitive position where he could’ve been comprised, the president should’ve been told.”

Anyhow, Congressional hearings on the events in the Benghazi attack are going down later this week. Still no definite word yet on whether Petraeus will or will not be called to testify at some point despite his resignation, but several lawmakers are insisting and it’s looking pretty likely that he will have to eventually, via CNN:

Sen. Susan Collins, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, joined other lawmakers Tuesdayin expressing concern about how much time had passed before the FBI got word out that former CIA Director David Petraeus was associated with an FBI investigation.

“It’s absolutely imperative that General Petraeus come and testify,” she said. “He was CIA director at the time of the attack, he visited Libya after the attack, he has a great deal of information that we need in order to understand what went wrong.” …

“I am puzzled by much of what has occurred in the FBI investigation and also the latest information that perhaps General Petraeus’ friend had access to some classified information,” she said.

NOW “it” is “the Petraeus scandal” AND NOT “Benghazi”.

They’ve transited Obama’s, uhhh, allegedly vague if not distantly abstract “non involvement” — so it’s alluded to — with Benghazi and it’s now “the Petraeus scandal”.

Obama knowingly allowed a massive amounts of powerful weapons to fall into the hands of terrorist factions in Libya. The original intent may have been to put the weapons into “friendly” hands, but this failed—-miserably. (a sort of Fast and Furious redux)

Four American Patriots died as a result of this failure.

Gen. Petraeus knew this was a failure in Benghazi and was preparing to throw the administration under the proverbial bus. Some one in the Obama administration told Petraeus “fine, but you’ll wait to make your report to the Senate until after the election, OR, we’ll expose your affair with Paula Broadwell”

The FBI, under the direction of Eric Holder, had this damaging information on Gen. Petraeus as far back as August, yet with-held the information from the Senate Intelligence Committee, (and of course he never informed the President). Also, in the FBI investigation, they found that Gen. Allen was also involved in an “affair of sorts” because Paula Broadwell sent threatening emails to Gen. Allen’s “friend”, (Jill Kelly).

30,000 emails later, we’ve got a sordid display of a General and the Head of the CIA compromising their positions and possibly compromising our national security.

The most important thing here to remember is that Barack, (Sergeant Shultz) Obama knew nothing.

Have I got this right…..so far?

Obama knowingly allowed a massive amounts of powerful weapons to fall into the hands of terrorist factions in Libya. The original intent may have been to put the weapons into “friendly” hands, but this failed

I am no fan of Obama, but wild speculation is how he gets out of these things, he points to the nut jobs and rightly says, “look how stupid they are, how wrong they were, don’t listen to any of them”…

Patraeus must know what Carney is spouting is pure BS. Right now I suspect David Patreaus has two things on his mind.

The first is saving his marriage and salvaging some kind of relationship with his wife.

The second is whether or not to come clean and tell all about Benghazi regardless of the consequences to himself.

He has been thrown under the bus, big time. Many are noting his actions before the election indicate he thought he would be staying on the job. He did not expect to be fired so soon and so abruptly. I wonder why the Obama admin thinks he will stay under the bus and go away without a whimper. Are they assuming he will conclude he must remain silent and parrot the party line for the good of the nation?

If those are Patraeus’ thoughts someone needs to take him aside and clear up his thinking. Unless he is a die hard Obama supporter it should be obvious to him the nation is not being well served by the Machiavellian socialist in the Oval Office. Perhaps he should give John Dean a call. Dear Leader is every bit as arrogant and power hungry as anyone ever said Richard Nixon was, but without half of Nixon’s intelligence. And Obama is far more dishonest than Nixon ever was.

You know who should really be pizzed? The parents, spouses, children, siblings, friends, etc, of troops that have served in Afghanistan, especially those that have died. While these patriots were out fighting and bleeding, their commanders were back at HQ shagging their biographers and exchanging thousands of emails with an “Honorary Consul” in Tampa.

Unf*ckingbelievable.

I also am outraged by the civilian side. Even if you believe the administration (I don’t), the entire matter is shocking and terrifying. Holder knew that Petraeus, the Director of the CIA, had been compromised in August and did not tell the POTUS. Really? Further, the FBI and Holder know about General Allen, the AfPak commander, and his relationship with a foreign national and they say nothing to anyone in intelligence or the White House? Really?

As one Senator Hillary Clinton once said to one General David Petraeus:

“I think that the reports that you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief.”

Everything the administration tell us requires the willing suspension of disbelief.

As an old Clinton parser, I have to note that the White House never actually denied telling the FBI to keep mum about this whole thing until after the election. “They have mechanisms” is not a statement of denial, its more a distraction for the weak minded.

“MR President there is a scandal brewing in your administration.”

“Well, keep it quiet until after the election. Don’t you have mechanisms that have to kick in before telling me the details?”

“Yes, Sir, they kicked in three days ago.”

jake49 on November 14, 2012 at 11:16 AM

Carney argues that the FBI has mechanisms in place for when to inform the White House and legislative branch about these types of things

Yeah, he said that a lot. He sounded like the White House was clueless about when other entities are and are not required to (much less should) report things to them. Instead, they simply trust others to know when the White House should know things and act accordingly.

In other words, from Fast & Furious to Benghazi, this is a “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” White House. They don’t want to know, otherwise they might be held responsible.

Of course the alternative explanation is this is a Sargent Shultz Administration -”I know nothing!…” even though it happened right in front of them.
