Allen West not ready to concede in Florida

posted at 7:41 pm on November 13, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Rep. Allen West and perhaps-Rep.-elect Patrick Murphy (he’s already on Capitol Hill for orientation-type stuff this week, anyway) fought a hard race for West’s House seat out of his newly-redrawn Florida district — it turned out to be the most expensive House race in the country, and it went right down to the wire — but by a very narrow margin, they called it for Murphy. West isn’t ready to quit pursuing the matter just yet, however; he’s been challenging the results, and is filing an injunction for a recount of early voting. From The Hill:

Though Democrat Patrick Murphy was ahead of West at last count by .58 percent, just above the .5 percent margin that would force a recount by Florida law, West has refused to concede.

He has now filed a complaint, along with eight early voters in the race, calling for an injunction ordering St. Lucie County supervisor of elections Gertrude Walker and Florida secretary of state Dan Detzner to fully recount all eight days of early voting in St. Lucie County.

The St. Lucie County Canvassing Board did recount three days of early voting, due to a machine malfunction, and according to West’s campaign, the voter count subsequently declined by nearly 1,000 ballots.

“It stands to reason that if the remaining early votes were to be recounted, additional errors would be uncovered and the tabulation of votes revised accordingly,” the statement issued by West’s campaign reads.

There are still a few other outstanding House races around the country, but Florida plans to certify these results by Friday.

As ever, I find Rep. West’s refusal to be cowed by anyone downright impressive, but unfortunately, I can’t say I’m holding out much hope that this will bear fruit for him. I’m sure his fortitude, candor, and — sorry, I’m just gonna’ say it — badassery, will be missed by many (by others… maybe not so much). I tend to think we need more politicians like him willing to say what’s honestly on their mind, but, perhaps it’s not really goodbye?

If this whole Florida recount doesn’t go U.S. Rep. Allen West’s way, he has a standing invite to move to the more-Republican leaning state of Georgia.

In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia Republican Party chairwoman Sue Everhart said she’d love to welcome West back to Georgia.

“I would be glad to have him come back to Georgia and at some point run here,” Everhart said. “I would certainly try to help him because he has done his job. The way he ran his race didn’t in any way interfere with the job he did. He ran as a Republican, a conservative Republican.”

Good. It’s down to .58 after the first partial recount of early votes.

Georgia would be a good fit for him — a heavy number of African-Americans, and a heavy number of conservatives are there.

Martha McSally is in a very close race against Barbor in AZ. I’m not confident she will win. Republicans rarely win recounts because provisional ballots are usually cast by those who didn’t plan ahead of time to vote so they are more likely to be low info voters aka democrats.

In large part due to the fallout from the 2000 race, Florida now sharply limits the circumstances under which there can be a recount. Even the limited recount of early votes they did was legally dubious because it does not appear to be authorized by Florida law.

It’s looking like West will have to let them certify the race, then file an election contest.

AngusMc on November 13, 2012 at 7:55 PM

If during a recount, he can open up the topics of dead voters, voters voting in multiple counties and states, illegal aliens voting, and voters that have voted early AND in person AND absentee, he will end up winning in a landslide.

Rumor has it he’s a cannoneer
He’s a reckless buccaneer
I hear he carries several guns with many clips
The annihilator of Islam creeps with information on them at his
fingertips

They say he’s nearly seven feet tall
And yet quite graceful… … all in all
I’m told there are lightning bolts when he walks
And thunder when he talks

He’s been many times seen
Wearing DCU and then full OD green
I hear he’s steely as you please
He could be Samurai Japanese

He may be shrewd
He may be rude
Ah well, it’s hard to tell
Who is this Allen West, do tell?

The Muslims and their supporters may think he comes from hell
But he may come from somewhere just around the dell
But he will be here and he will be there
You could see him bringing fire and brimstone on Islam most any time and most anywhere

He meddles with the Islamic Devolution
Stomping them mightily throughout each week
Spoiling every Imam’s useful idiot’s lying elocution
La, what cheek!

Here is what I learned on Moonbattery today:

There are 175, 554 registered voters in St. Lucie County, Florida. But 247,713 vote cards were cast in the general election! Gee, how did that happen???

Now, here is how this shakes out. Congressman West was leading his Florida race by some 2,000 votes late election night. For some unexplained reason, the supervisor of elections decided to “recount” the votes; lo and behold, Mr. West lost by about 2,400 votes! Wonder of wonders, this happened in St. Lucie County! What an amazing coincidence, right?

It’s Valerie Jarrett’s PAYBACK (story on TheUlstermanReport) to a decent black man who not only refuses to support Obama, but has the audacity to be a member of the Republican Party.

This is the Jezebel spirit running America, friends. And the worst is yet to come.

They’re actually trying to claim that the reason their turnout was 141% was because they had “butterfly ballots” ie. two cards and 59% of voters only filled out the first one.

I’ve heard people claim that the ballots were double-sided…

Regardless of this, who thought it was a good idea to count down things with a 200% turnout model? What purpose could their possibly be for a system so stupid as this?

This is the explanation I’ve read of the terms card and ballot. There were two cards and both were two-sided, giving 4 pages. Together, both cards constituted one ballot, but some people evidently only turned in one card.

Putting aside whether or not the votes have been handled and counted correctly, the problem on reporting, as I understand it, is the way the votes were reported. On the first couple of pages under the broad heading of TURN OUT there were three columns titled,
Reg. Voters, Cards Cast, % Turnout.

http://www.slcelections.com/Pdf%20Docs/2012%20General/rescan/GEMS%20SOVC%20REPORT.pdf

From looking at the % turnout, it appears those numbers were obtained using the Reg. Voters numbers and Cards Cast. That’s mixing apples, oranges and peaches together and calling them kumquats.

% turnout, to my way of thinking, would be obtained by using the number of registered voters and the number of voters who actually turned out to vote. Since two cards = one ballot, the number of cards cast would be at most equal to twice the number of voters who actually turned out.

When I looked at this last week, I looked at the first two pages and didn’t wade through the other 168. I did look at the Shark Tank explanation and it didn’t discuss this odd way of reporting on the pdf.

Remember also that this supervisor of elections said someone had found a box of ballots in a library. IMHO, at the very least, the woman is incompetent and doesn’t understand math.

Instead, we’re hearing that turnout was about 70%…and yet they were warning us that the numbers wouldn’t match up because not everyone turned in both cards.

In one county with only four registered voters they received 6 cards (150%). So either 3 people voted completely or all four voted but only two completely.
