Af-Pak theater commander caught in sex scandal?

posted at 8:01 am on November 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The FBI probe into the affair involving a former commander of the Afghanistan-Pakistan theater of war has apparently led to the exposure of his successor.  Reports overnight from several news sources say that investigators discovered tens of thousands of communications between General John Allen, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, and Jill Kelley, whose friendship with General David Petraeus allegedly triggered a bout of e-mail harassment from Petraeus’ mistress Paula Broadwell:

The FBI probe into the sex scandal that prompted CIA Director David Petraeus to resign has expanded to ensnare Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced early Tuesday.

According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 documents — most of them e-mails — of “potentially inappropriate” communications between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close relationship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall.

Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011. He also served as Petraeus’s deputy when both generals led the military’s Tampa-based Central Command from 2008 until 2010.

The FBI first notified the Pentagon of its investigation into Allen’s communications with Kelley on Sunday evening, according to the senior defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the pending case.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta issued a statement last night that said Allen would remain in place for now, but he was on his way out anyway.  The Senate Armed Services Committee was scheduled to take up the confirmation hearing of his successor, Marine General Joseph F. Dunford, on Thursday.  According to the Washington Post, Panetta asked Senate leadership yesterday to expedite Dunford’s confirmation, and that could happen within days.  At the same time, Panetta put a hold on Allen’s promotion to commander of all NATO forces in Europe while the investigation continues.

Allen will have fewer options than Petraeus did if this turns out to be true.  Petraeus was a civilian when his affair was discovered, and could have opted to keep his job.  An extramarital affair on active duty is another matter entirely.  The Uniform Code of Military Justice prohibits such sexual relationships, and it could result in a court-martial.

That doesn’t occur very often, but that’s not to say that it’s consequence-free, either.  Seven years ago, Army Chief of Staff Peter Schoomaker abruptly dismissed four-star General Kevin Byrnes from the service over an extramarital affair, even though Byrnes was only a few months away from retirement, and even though Byrnes and his wife had been separated for months and were in the process of divorce.  Byrnes headed the Training and Doctrine Command in Virginia, not a war theater or a strategic center such as NATO, but that probably makes it worse for Allen, not better.

Let’s hope that Jill Kelley and Paula Broadwell have never made General Dunford’s acquaintance.

Update: Maybe it’s not the money after all:

Update II: Ace Gabriel Malor at Ace’s place is aghast, not just at the cheating, but the sheer scope of the communications:

Twenty to thirty THOUSAND pages? I write for a living and I can tell you that I haven’t written twenty to thirty thousand pages in my working career. Cheese-and-crackers, that’s a damn lot of love letters. I’ve never liked anyone enough EVER to spend that much time talking to them. Eesh.

The inescapable rule of affairs just ran into the first rule of spycraft. The rule of affairs is that there is never just one. You cheat, that makes you a cheater. It never just happens once.

And the first rule of spycraft is that “Everyone (or every man) has his blond bombshell in a red Ferrari.” Translation: every idiot will let his sex drive drive.

On Twitchy, it’s been suggested that these may be captures of chat sessions, which would make more sense … but also mean that the commander of the Af-Pak theater spends a lot of time thinking about something other than victory.

You should think about the implications of that.

20,000-30,000 pages of emails between Allen and Kelley? That’s 55-82 pages of emails per day, every day, for an entire year. Math is fun!

Wouldn’t matter. All the emails he sent Kelley are stored in her account which she allowed the feds to access. As soon as they saw inappropriate messages from Allen, they had probable cause to search. Blake on November 13, 2012 at 9:39 A

The emails were kept in the drafts folder and supposedly never sent. That’s why they both had access to the gmail account, so they could read the “drafts” and not have to send them.

This makes no sense what-so-ever. I’ve worked for a general, and they in now way have time to write 20,000 emails to one person, and still run their command. If he wrote 20,000 pages over two years, that is 27 pages per day. I’m thinking this is going to be revised.

…so we have a failed surge in Afghanistan that has primarily resulted in sending our Soldiers to die in a War that Obama has no intention of winning.

………we have ROE’s that give the enemy advantages and openings to kill our Soldiers on the battlefield….and now have led to the Afghan government that pretty much supports the Taliban…making the decisions on where..how ….and when we actually attack the enemy.

…..we have an administration that declares “The Taliban is not our enemy”..

………….we have Obama’s training of Afghan police and Soldiers backfiring so bad that we are losing more Soldiers from “trainees” killing them than we are to IED’s and fighting on the front lines.

……we have watched the Taliban/al-qaeda regain territory….open training camps back up…and launch attacks with such success that they took out the largest loss of air power since the Vietnam war.

…we have a President who talks more about exit dates than he ever did about defeating the enemy.

………we have stopped “killing” the enemy to such an extent that we are now rebuilding their Mosques……
…….including the rebuilding of Omar’s mosque.

So while the war in Afghanistan that Obama promised to win…turns into the worst possible cluster-f#$k anyone could imagine … we head to the exits……we have the leadership spending all of their time playing their own version of “Keeping up with the Kardashians” while Obama goes around the country bragging about how dam# successful his foreign policy is…..

………..and as usual who suffers the most from this deadly incompetence and failure……
…………..the American Soldier.

This dereliction of duty and ineptness that is rampant in this “Hope and change” administration should result in heads rolling from the President on down…..our Soldiers deserve so much better than this.

How omaba benefited;

*The petraeus scandel broke two days after the election
*Obama’s attorney general Holder knew of scandel late summer and supposedly sat on this till after the election
*On 9-11, the day of the bengazi attack, the CIA station manager called this a terrorist attack. Two days later, under oath, Gen. Petraeus said the assault was caused by a video. Fow two weeks, Obama during the election explained the deaths of 4 americans backed by the CIA/FBI was because of a video. Further, backed up DURING a debate watched by 55 million people where CNN’s Fat Crowley backed Obama’s version of events.
*Hillary Clinton did not testify about events during congressional hearings.

Key question- Obama knew it was a terrorist act on 9-11, why did he use the video crap for two weeks. His media dimwits aided him with cover, But why!

Also learned that the GOP cannot do basic math either or Mitt Romney’s large loss would not have been a surprise.

jonknee on November 13, 2012 at 8:55 AM

Apparently you cannot do basic math either, or comprehend relative magnitudes. In fact, you apparently do not know what “basic math” is.

“Large” loss? Since when is a margin of 400,000 in four swing states out of a total 120+ million votes cast nationally a “large” loss? In basic math a substantive difference of 0.33% is “large”? If Romney had flipped only the right 201,00 of those votes he would be President-elect. That’s a “large” loss, mathematically speaking, only in the sense that winning a miles long race by a hair’s breadth is a mathematically “large” loss, easily predictable using basic math.

Also, questioning assumptions made in the collection and analysis of data by pollsters, such as the relative turnout of Ds and Rs, based on past relative turnout numbers from 2008 and 2010, has nothing to do with math and was rational and reasonable. Making a wrong judgement call on that has nothing to do with “basic math”

And if the “large loss” was so easy to predict using basic math, then surely you bet everything you had on it and made a lot of money, right? Using just basic math you cleaned up financially simply by making the obvious bet using every dollar you could find, right?

Not understanding that “taxing the rich” more will do very little to nothing to erase trillion plus dollar deficits as far as the eye can see is a failure of basic math. Not understanding that trillion dollar annual deficits cannot go on forever is a failure of basic math. Not understanding that taking $500 billion of future revenue slated for Medicare and spending it on something else means there is less to spend on Medicare is a failure of basic math. Not understanding that the numbers used to calculate Obamacare as revenue neutral were ginned up and deliberately picked to give that appearance, even after it was shown not to be true well before the election by the people who calculated them in the first place, is a failure of basic math. And so on and so forth.

The Obama Administration’s Version of Musical Generals, and Other Top Cabinet Officials

CIA director David Petraeus, (former Afghanistan commander, former Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, former Commander of the Iraqi Theater) is out admittedly because he had an extra-marital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Petraeus was scheduled to appear before the Senate Armed Services Committee on the events that took place in Benghazi, (where an Ambassador and three other Americans were brutally murdered IN A TERRORIST ATTACK), but that’s now “on hold”.

In the meantime, this investigation has lead to discovering that the top U.S. Commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, may also be involved in an affair with Jill Kelly, (who was allegedly receiving threatening emails from Paula Broadwell:

“The Pentagon said Tuesday that Allen is under investigation for alleged “inappropriate communications” with Jill Kelley, the woman who is said to have received threatening emails from Petraeus’ paramour.”

General Allen has been nominated to become commander of U.S. European Command and the Supreme Commander of NATO forces in Europe—now put “on hold” by Leon Panetta, who is rumored to be moving out of the position of Sect. of Defense, and replaced by John Kerry.

While the liberal media was ignoring the events that took place in Benghazi, (on September 11, 2012) were they also ignoring some of these events that started last summer when an FBI investigation began? Are there no more investigative journalist in the news media? Or, are they all in bed, (pun intended) with “all the President’s Men”?

And from your own source:

“For the U.S. military to say they couldn’t move … one aircraft in eight hours, I say it’s time to relieve the people in chain of command,” Bing West, an assistant defense secretary under President Reagan, told Fox News.

But U.S. officials argue “strafing the streets of Benghazi” without a clear intelligence picture on the ground could have led to Americans or innocent bystanders being mistakenly hit. Officials also feared an ambush by the attackers.

“It’s not as easy as people think,” retired Gen. Jack Keane, former vice chief of the Army staff, said. “It’s not as it’s displayed in Hollywood. … They are as concerned about those who they are sending there and having harm come to them as they are about those who are already there under duress.”

Seems like we have a Reagan man with a bone to pick vs. a retired general with actual experience on the field who can tell movies from real world.

Your choice of who to trust on this matter is questionable.

It may indeed turn out to be “nothing”. At the moment that appears unlikely, but it is possible. Right now there is a lot of smoke being generated, a boatload of critical unanswered questions about the deaths of four Americans in a terrorist attack on 9/11/2012, and a lot of evidence suggesting there is more there than “nothing”.

At this time it is reasonable and rational focus on Benghazi and the related Patraeus/Broadwell connections. If there was a Republican in the WH our pathologically suspicious, skeptical, curious, and critical MSM would not have spent the past two months yawning and ignoring it.

It’s quite a lot indeed to the four who died and their families. Those trolls above, trying to diminish the horror of those men being left to die, are despicable and should be banned.

They WERE left to die. Nothing was done to save them. Orders were given to “stand down” and let them die.

OBAMA WENT TO BED.

dogsoldier on November 13, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Obama bringing down any generals who might have or might oppose him? How many others do you think are looking over their shoulder?

Who really are Broadwell and this Kelly women? Are they just military groupies or are they plants who were sent/dangled before these guys in the hopes of controlling the guys by way of blackmail?

Rockshine on November 13, 2012 at 11:15 AM

he high-tech trickery Petraeus and Broadwell used to hide their affair was revealed. They wrote each other e-mails and, rather then sending them, left them in a draft folder for the other to read, the AP said. This prevented an easily followed e-mail trail.

Up to this point the MSM has had a total block out on this story, and with the exception of FOX and conservative websites/radio no one has really touched it. Now everyone is forced to cover it. It just looks bad all the away around….It has it all…Sex, death, terrorist, secrete CIA prisons, betrayal, angry wives, angry mistresses, CIA vs. FBI cat fight, a massive cover-up reaching at least as high as Holder if not to the President.

Obama either comes out of this as someone who covered this all up to protect his re-election, or as the complete ignorant doofus we know he is.

Sometimes, you fool, Occam’s Razor really does provide the answer.

If your precious d’ohbama was not involved, why did he try so hard to get people to accept a lie about it? Why did he lie to all Americans about it? Why did he go before the UN and lie about it? (and apologize – again – to the islamists?)
You and the rest of the obots can try to spin and keep lying to cover for your obamassiah all you want – but the Truth will come out.

Note that our resident coprophage inadvertently spoke the truth. Yes, it was a terrorist attack by al Qaeda, and they were left to die because little Bammie didn’t want the nation to know that al Qaeda were alive and well in North Africa.

I’m in basic agreement with you.

The related sex scandal is a thread the MSM cannot resist pulling on. It is a thread that is connected to and leads to what happened in Benghazi and why, ehich is still a wide open issue. Patraeus is intimately tied to both Benghazi and Broadwell. Broadwell made public statements about Benghazi suggesting something covert was going on. Info about Benghazi and their affair was quashed before the election. What Obama knew, when he knew it, and what he did about all of these things are unknowns, beyond Obama’s “trust me” statements (compare with “I am not a crook”). The FBI is now combing over and sifting through Broadwell’s residence and possessions, after declaring the investigation over before the election. Broadwell’s father says there is a lot more to this than just a sex scandal. And so on and as so forth.

It’s being widely reported genius, and Petraeus said the CIA didn’t give it. Someone did, else he woulda said that there was no stand down order given – which would have meant that there was no order to assist given by anyone in the chain of command, which seems kind of unlikely since distress calls went out.

Men in service to this nation, who served “at the pleasure of the President”, were attacked and died. They sent communications prior to the attack stating their concerns over lack of security or safety. They sent communications at the outset of the attack begging for support and assistance. None came. Does it matter how the sequence which followed played out? Here are some options:

Nobody at State noticed their urgent requests for aid.

Said requests were considered and ignored by State.

Said requests were forwarded to the White House and either ignored or denied.

Said requests were forwarded to Defense and either ignored or denied.

Orders were issued but not carried out.

I know there are other options, but I can’t think of any which don’t require either Clinton at State, Panetta at Defense, or Obama in the Oval Office to be culpable for this heinous failure. Every possible path…

It is so funny to me (if you don’t laugh about it you can only cry) that off the cuff comments or sexual affairs could bring down such figures as Stanley McChrystal (Spec Ops genius/leader), David Petreus (the Hero/Saviour of the Iraq campaign), and John Allen, the commanding officer of NATO.

Some CO in the Canadian Forces was also disciplined for having an affair while in Afghanistan – got recalled back to Canada.

It’s preposterous. Leave these very important and capable leaders alone, and stop hounding them with this media attention while they’re out there. For gd’s sake, they’re there killing people and having their buddies killed, far from their spouses… let them relieve their stresses as they see fit and on their own terms, and if they get caught in the personal world as opposed to by reporters from the vulturistic world of media, then let them deal with it privately.

It’s unconscionable that the war efforts can be hurt by nonsense like this.

tommyboy on November 13, 2012 at 8:58 AM

You ever thought otherwise? The nature of the internet is that it’s monitored. Every router monitors every packet, it has to, and that is what it does. We feared Zero because we know that they know, and want to enslave us all.

Good luck with that, enslaving us that is, bad luck for the greatest nation in Earth’s history. Worse luck for the suckers in major metro areas, food and water will be in short supply.

Your choice of who to trust on this matter is questionable.

lester on November 13, 2012 at 10:56 AM

…if they are so proud of the fact that they “stood down” and did nothing to help our men who fought for their lives for almost 7 hours….
….then come forward with who gave the “stand down”.
We already know that Obama did not meet with or have the terrorist unit that is specifically trained for these types of terrorist attacks to take action.
The fact that the Obama administration has given so many conflicting responses and is not coming forward with important players in this debacle like Hillary/Petreaus…..will not release the important documentation related to this Libyan disaster…..and will not come forward with who gave the stand down certainly shows that they are not as “proud” or “confident” in how they handled this as you propose they are.
If it was such a great decision….then Obama should have no problem revealing who gave the “stand down” and giving these investigative committee’s what they are requesting.
Lester…your boy king needs to put up or shut up.

But Obama gets a pass on everything.
